Abstract:This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using Semantic Web paradigm, especially the Web Ontology Language (OWL), for functional design knowledge representation during functional modeling in a multi-agent distributed design environment. An ontology-based functional modeling framework is proposed as a prelude to a meaningful agent communication for collaborative functional modeling. Formal knowledge representation in OWL format extends traditional functional modeling with capabilities of knowledge sharing and distributed problem solving, and is used as a content language within the FIPA ACL (Agent Communication Language) messages in a proposed multi-agent architecture. The ontological enhancement to functional modeling facilitates the implementation of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) in functional design for Semantic Web applications.
Quasi-stratified Order Semantics of Concurrency

Abstract:In the development of operational semantics of concurrent systems, a key decision concerns the adoption of a suitable notion of execution model, which basically amounts to choosing a class of partial orders according to which events are arranged along the execution line. Typical kinds of such partial orders are the total, stratified and interval orders. In this paper, we introduce quasi-stratified orders - positioned in-between the stratified and interval orders - which are tailored for transaction-like or hierarchical concurrent executions. Dealing directly with the vast number of executions of concurrent system is far from being practical. It was realised long time ago that it can be much more effective to consider behaviours at a more abstract level of behavioural specifications (often based on intrinsic relationships between events such as those represented by causal partial orders), each such specification - typically, a relational structure - encompassing a (large) number of executions. In this paper, we introduce and investigate suitable specifications for behaviours represented by quasi-stratified orders. The proposed model of quasi-stratified relational structures is based on two relationships between events - the 'before' and 'not later' relationships - which can be used to express and analyse causality, independence, and simultaneity between events.

Abstract:To realize the automatic and on-demand integration of web services, it is necessary to resolve such issues as the high-level task decomposing and the goal planning at the concept level. We propose a process ontology model by adopting an inheritance mechanism with overriding declaration and monotonic inheritance. The inherited relation among processes implies a layered structure of task decomposing. A framework of automatic composition of web services at knowledge level is proposed.

Abstract:We propose a framework grounded in Logic Programming for representing and reasoning about business processes from both the procedural and ontological point of views. In particular, our goal is threefold: (1) define a logical language and a formal semantics for process models enriched with ontology-based annotations; (2) provide an effective inference mechanism that supports the combination of reasoning services dealing with the structural definition of a process model, its behavior, and the domain knowledge related to the participating business entities; (3) implement such a theoretical framework into a process modeling and reasoning platform. To this end we define a process ontology coping with a relevant fragment of the popular BPMN modeling notation. The behavioral semantics of a process is defined as a state transition system by following an approach similar to the Fluent Calculus, and allows us to specify state change in terms of preconditions and effects of the enactment of activities. Then we show how the procedural process knowledge can be seamlessly integrated with the domain knowledge specified by using the OWL 2 RL rule-based ontology language. Our framework provides a wide range of reasoning services, including CTL model checking, which can be performed by using standard Logic Programming inference engines through a goal-oriented, efficient, sound and complete evaluation procedure. We also present a software environment implementing the proposed framework, and we report on an experimental evaluation of the system, whose results are encouraging and show the viability of the approach.
A Framework for Time Consistency Verification for Web Processes Based on Annotated OWL-S

Abstract:The paper presents a timing constraint modeling and analyzing method for Web processes based on annotated OWL-S. The method allows us to find whether Web processes are schedulable and which processes in Web processes are not schedulable without actual execution based on its specification. This also suggests replacement of corresponding components or relaxing timing constraints. The contributions of the paper mainly include two aspects: 1) The paper presents a method for extending OWL-S model based on annotation layers. By using annotation layers, the OWL-S model is extended with auxiliary information such as time constraints. This method can be extended to verify other properties of the Web processes by using different annotation layers. 2) The paper describes how to model Web services based systems and determine whether the specification satisfies time consistency. First, we model a Web process in extended OWL-S with timing constraints. Then, we transform the system specification along with its imposed timing constraints into a TPPN (Time Predicate Petri Net) model. Final, TPPN analyzer can automatically simulate and analyze to verify whether the system specification is schedulable under the imposed timing constraints.

Abstract:State-based models of concurrent systems are traditionally considered under a variety of notions of process equivalence. In the particular case of labelled transition systems, these equivalences range from trace equivalence to (strong) bisimilarity, and are organized in what is known as the linear time -- branching time spectrum. A combination of universal coalgebra and graded monads provides a generic framework in which the semantics of concurrency can be parametrized both over the branching type of the underlying transition systems and over the granularity of process equivalence. We show in the present paper that this framework of graded semantics does subsume the most important equivalences from the linear time -- branching time spectrum. An important feature of graded semantics is that it allows for the principled extraction of characteristic modal logics. We have established invariance of these graded logics under the given graded semantics in earlier work; in the present paper, we extend the logical framework with an explicit propositional layer and provide a generic expressiveness criterion that generalizes the classical Hennessy-Milner theorem to coarser notions of process equivalence. We extract graded logics for a range of graded semantics on labelled transition systems and probabilistic systems, and give exemplaric proofs of their expressiveness based on our generic criterion.

Abstract:A heterogeneous system interoperation framework based on multi-layer ontology was proposed to solve the problems of integrating heterogeneous systems during the business collaboration.Using the key components of business collaboration: product,activity,process as a point of departure,the framework defines a multi-layer ontology model composed of product knowledge ontology,activity ontology,and process ontology,to realize the semantic consistency of multi-components in collaboration process.Product knowledge ontology supports the product specification in activity ontology;activity ontology describes the concept,function,implementation of each procedure or action in process;and process ontology connects various activities by control construction to compose business process.The combined mapping theory and the semantic similarity semantic algorithm realize the semantic mapping and integration among different ontology libraries and achieve upper ontology.OWL-S is used to describe the release and request of Web service.The example of cloth sale showed how the business interoperation mechanism works to achieve business ordering process matching using the ontology mapping module and the semantic matching module in the prototype system.

Abstract:The integration of web services and intelligent agents is promising for automated service discovery, negotiation, and cooperation. But due to the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of web services and agents, it is challenging to guide the behaviors of underlying agents to meet the high-level business (changeful) requirements. Traditional Policy-driven methods (Ponder, Rei, KAoS, etc) are not adaptable to direct the discovery, negotiation and cooperation of dynamic agents who may join in or leave out of a specific community or organization (virtual organization) at run time. The purpose of this paper is to model an ontology-based, policy-driven control framework that is suitable to supervise the dynamic agents according to high-level policies. On the basis of federated multi-agents infrastructure and ontologies of policies, domain concepts, and agent federations, a model of role-based policy specification framework is presented in this paper.

Abstract:The System-of-Systems (SoS) paradigm is widely recognized and has become quite studied since a decade, as it has potentially practical applicability in systems engineering. SoS-organized systems could make efficient use of resources from a variety of domains. In this paper, we are studying one of the typical forms of networked enterprises: the supply chain. We will apply the SoS paradigm to this kind of "so-called" system-of-networked enterprises and we will then explore and analyze the interoperation problem in heterogeneous networked enterprises systems. Focusing on information flows in supply chain, we are proposing an approach for developing a supply chain ontology for networked enterprises interoperability, based on an extension of the ONTO-PDM product ontology.

Abstract:We propose a compositional specification theory for reasoning about components that interact by synchronisation of input and output (I/O) actions, in which the specification of a component constrains the temporal ordering of interactions with the environment. Such a theory is motivated by the need to support composability of components, in addition to modelling environmental assumptions, and reasoning about run-time behaviour. Models can be specified operationally by means of I/O labelled transition systems augmented by an inconsistency predicate on states, or in a purely declarative manner by means of traces. We introduce a refinement preorder that supports safe-substitutivity of components. Our specification theory includes the operations of parallel composition for composing components at run-time, logical conjunction for independent development, and quotient for incremental development. We prove congruence properties of the operations and show correspondence between the operational and declarative frameworks.

Abstract:Organization concepts and models are increasingly being adopted for the design and specification of multi-agent systems. Agent organizations can be seen as mechanisms of social order, created to achieve global (or organizational) objectives by more or less autonomous agents. In order to develop a theory on the relation between organizational structures, organizational objectives and the actions of agents fulfilling roles in the organization a theoretical framework is needed to describe organizational structures and actions of (groups of) agents. Current logical formalisms focus on specific aspects of organizations (e.g. power, delegation, agent actions, or normative issues) but a framework that integrates and relates different aspects is missing. Given the amount of aspects involved and the subsequent complexity of a formalism encompassing them all, it is difficult to realize. In this paper, a first step is taken to solve this problem. We present a generic formal model that enables to specify and relate the main concepts of an organization (including, activity, structure, environment and others) so that organizations can be analyzed at a high level of abstraction. However, for some aspects we use a simplified model in order to avoid the complexity of combining many different types of (modal) operators.

Abstract:Process modeling and its description language are attracting increasing attention from industries. As the concept of role orientation becomes more widely accepted, there have already been some role-modeling approaches and description languages of role orientation. This paper summarizes the characteristics and the weakness of the methods mentioned above, and presents an intuitive, vivid, flexible, and highly scalable process description language for role orientation. This language adopts a modular and component-oriented approach which lowers the coupling degree between the process modules and provides a new methodology for future process description.
From Thin Concurrent Games to Generalized Species of Structures (Extended Version)

Abstract:Two families of denotational models have emerged from the semantic analysis of linear logic: dynamic models, typically presented as game semantics, and static models, typically based on a category of relations. In this paper we introduce a formal bridge between a dynamic model and a static model: the model of thin concurrent games and strategies, based on event structures, and the model of generalized species of structures, based on distributors. A special focus of this paper is the two-dimensional nature of the dynamic-static relationship, which we formalize with double categories and bicategories. In the first part of the paper, we construct a symmetric monoidal oplax functor from linear concurrent strategies to distributors. We highlight two fundamental differences between the two models: the composition mechanism, and the representation of resource symmetries. In the second part of the paper, we adapt established methods from game semantics (visible strategies, payoff structure) to enforce a tighter connection between the two models. We obtain a cartesian closed pseudofunctor, which we exploit to shed new light on recent results in the theory of the lambda-calculus.

Structure-Behavior Coalescence Process Algebra -- Toward a Unified View of the System in Model-Based Systems Engineering

Abstract:In Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) specification includes a metamodel that defines the language concepts and a user model that defines how the language concepts are represented. In SysML, an important use of metamodel is to provide an integrated semantic framework that every diagram in the user model can be projected as a view of the metamodel. However, most existing SysML metamodels lack such capability of being a basis for unification of different views of a system. To overcome the shortcomings of the current SysML metamodel approaches, we developed Channel-Based Multi-Queue Structure-Behavior Coalescence Process Algebra (C-M-SBC-PA), which provides an integrated semantic framework that is able to integrate structural constructs with behavioral constructs. Using C-M-SBC-PA as the metamodel of SysML, each diagram in the user model can be projected as a view of the C-M-SBC-PA metamodel.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an ontology definition which is helpful in symbolising the ontology and ontology management. By investigating interactions between agents in business scenarios, we adopt the process algebra to model interactions and corresponding effects. For the purpose of solving the conflicts or inconsistency in understanding a particular issue, we investigate the agent negotiation mechanisms on the basis of process algebra. Moreover, private strategies in reaching agreements are discussed. Our approach reveals that reflections from other agents in negotiations can be captured and in turn provide sufficient information about how to manage the ontology along with proposed activities in ontology evolution.
Formalizing the Four-layer Metamodeling Stack -- Potential and Benefits

Abstract:Enterprise modeling deals with the increasing complexity of processes and systems by operationalizing model content and by linking complementary models and languages, thus amplifying the model-value beyond mere comprehensible pictures. To enable this amplification and turn models into computer-processable structures a comprehensive formalization is needed. This paper presents a generic formalism based on typed first-order logic and provides a perspective on the potential and benefits arising for a variety of research issues in conceptual modeling. We define modeling languages as formal languages with a signature $\Sigma$ - comprising object types, relation types, and attributes through types and function symbols - and a set of constraints. Three cases studies are included to show the effectiveness of the approach. Applying the formalism to the next level in the hierarchy of models we create M2FOL, a formal modeling language for metamodels. We show that M2FOL is self-describing and therefore complete the formalization of the full four-layer metamodeling stack. On the basis of our generic formalism applicable to arbitrary modeling languages we examine three current research topics - language interleaving & consistency, operations on models, and automatic translation of formalizations to platform-specific code - and how to approach them with the proposed formalism. This shows that the rich knowledge stack on formal languages in logic offers new tools for old problems.

A structure theorem for generalized-noncontextual ontological models

Abstract:It is useful to have a criterion for when the predictions of an operational theory should be considered classically explainable. Here we take the criterion to be that the theory admits of a generalized-noncontextual ontological model. Existing works on generalized noncontextuality have focused on experimental scenarios having a simple structure: typically, prepare-measure scenarios. Here, we formally extend the framework of ontological models as well as the principle of generalized noncontextuality to arbitrary compositional scenarios. We leverage a process-theoretic framework to prove that, under some reasonable assumptions, every generalized-noncontextual ontological model of a tomographically local operational theory has a surprisingly rigid and simple mathematical structure -- in short, it corresponds to a frame representation which is not overcomplete. One consequence of this theorem is that the largest number of ontic states possible in any such model is given by the dimension of the associated generalized probabilistic theory. This constraint is useful for generating noncontextuality no-go theorems as well as techniques for experimentally certifying contextuality. Along the way, we extend known results concerning the equivalence of different notions of classicality from prepare-measure scenarios to arbitrary compositional scenarios. Specifically, we prove a correspondence between the following three notions of classical explainability of an operational theory: (i) existence of a noncontextual ontological model for it, (ii) existence of a positive quasiprobability representation for the generalized probabilistic theory it defines, and (iii) existence of an ontological model for the generalized probabilistic theory it defines.

On the specification of modal systems: A comparison of three frameworks

Abstract:This paper studies the relationships between three notions of behavioural preorder that have been proposed in the literature: refinement over modal transition systems, and the covariant-contravariant simulation and the partial bisimulation preorders over labelled transition systems. It is shown that there are mutual translations between modal transition systems and labelled transition systems that preserve, and reflect, refinement and the covariant-contravariant simulation preorder. The translations are also shown to preserve the modal properties that can be expressed in the logics that characterize those preorders. A translation from labelled transition systems modulo the partial bisimulation preorder into the same model modulo the covariant-contravariant simulation preorder is also offered, together with some evidence that the former model is less expressive than the latter. In order to gain more insight into the relationships between modal transition systems modulo refinement and labelled transition systems modulo the covariant-contravariant simulation preorder, their connections are also phrased and studied in the context of institutions.

Abstract:An ontology for mastering the cognitive complexity of the compliance problem, when heterogeneous and geographically distributed knowledge‐driven organizational structures (legal department, standardization department, etc.) need to communicate. We provide (1) an illustration of the usefulness of our ontology in the context of pumps manufacturing and safety process compliance with the Machinery Directive andharmonized standards; (2) a set of competency questions that translate competencies within the departments; and (3) a set of queries that retrieve answers to the questions and populate a justification for compliance, generated by instantiating a novel argumentation pattern. Legislations impose requirements on the manufacturing of machinery. Typically, these requirements are interpreted and refined by (domain‐specific) technical committees and published in terms of standards. At the company level, these refined requirements are further interpreted, refined, and documented in terms of internal processes. Due to the proliferation of (interdependent) legislations and standards and the consequent increase of the cognitive complexity, at the company level, manual knowledge management is becoming more and more challenging and requires automated decision support. Despite the availability of approaches aimed at automating the decision support, no one offers a satisfactory solution. In this paper, we focus on knowledge management for process compliance and we propose a novel structured ontology. Our ontology aims at mastering (by dividing and conquering via tracing) the cognitive complexity of the compliance problem, when heterogeneous and sometimes geographically distributed knowledge‐driven organizational structures (legal department, standardization department, etc.) are involved and need to communicate. We also illustrate the potential usefulness of our proposed ontology in the context of pumps manufacturing and safety process compliance with the Machinery Directive and related harmonized standards including EN 809:1998+A1. Specifically, first, we identify the competencies that characterize departments and interdepartment interactions, then we formulate an initial set of competency questions that translate those identified competencies, then we show how the ontology can be exploited to retrieve the answers to the questions and how the answers can be exploited to build a justification for compliance. Precisely, we propose an argumentation pattern given in two different argumentation notations, and we show how it can be partly instantiated by exploiting the returned answers. The illustration also partly covers the compliance with the Machinery Regulation, expected to replace the Machinery Directive by January 2027. Finally, we sketch our intended future work.

Abstract:We present a graphical and dynamic framework for binding and execution of business) process models. It is tailored to integrate 1) ad hoc processes modeled graphically, 2) third party services discovered in the (Inter)net, and 3) (dynamically) synthesized process chains that solve situation-specific tasks, with the synthesis taking place not only at design time, but also at runtime. Key to our approach is the introduction of type-safe stacked second-order execution contexts that allow for higher-order process modeling. Tamed by our underlying strict service-oriented notion of abstraction, this approach is tailored also to be used by application experts with little technical knowledge: users can select, modify, construct and then pass (component) processes during process execution as if they were data. We illustrate the impact and essence of our framework along a concrete, realistic (business) process modeling scenario: the development of Springer's browser-based Online Conference Service (OCS). The most advanced feature of our new framework allows one to combine online synthesis with the integration of the synthesized process into the running application. This ability leads to a particularly flexible way of implementing self-adaption, and to a particularly concise and powerful way of achieving variability not only at design time, but also at runtime.
