Abstract:We consider a geometric percolation process partially motivated by recent work of Hejda and Kala. Specifically, we start with an initial set , and then iteratively check whether there exists a triangle with its vertices in such that T contains exactly four points of and exactly three points of X . In this case, we add the missing lattice point of T to X , and we repeat until no such triangle exists. We study the limit sets S , the sets stable under this process, including determining their possible densities and some of their structure.

Abstract:Percolation on a plane is usually associated with clusters spanning two opposite sides of a rectangular system. Here we investigate three-leg clusters generated on a square lattice and spanning the three sides of equilateral triangles. If the position and orientation of the triangles relative to the lattice are uniformly randomized, one obtains an efficient method of determining the percolation threshold, on par with the most advanced Monte Carlo methods developed for the rectangular geometry. The universal crossing probability for three-leg clusters is geometry-independent, which opens a way for further improvements of the method.
Transitive closure in a polluted environment

Abstract:We introduce and study a new percolation model, inspired by recent works on jigsaw percolation, graph bootstrap percolation, and percolation in polluted environments. Start with an oriented graph $G_0$ of initially occupied edges on $n$ vertices, and iteratively occupy additional (oriented) edges by transitivity, with the constraint that only open edges in a certain random set can ever be occupied. All other edges are closed, creating a set of obstacles for the spread of occupied edges. When $G_0$ is an unoriented linear graph, and leftward and rightward edges are open independently with possibly different probabilities, we identify three regimes in which the set of eventually occupied edges is either all open edges, the majority of open edges in one direction, or only a very small proportion of all open edges. In the more general setting where $G_0$ is a connected unoriented graph of bounded degree, we show that the transition between sparse and full occupation of open edges occurs when the probability of open edges is $(\log n)^{-1/2+o(1)}$. We conclude with several conjectures and open problems.

Abstract:We study the following combinatorial counting and sampling problems: can we efficiently sample from the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$ conditioned on triangle-freeness? Can we efficiently approximate the probability that $G(n,p)$ is triangle-free? These are prototypical instances of forbidden substructure problems ubiquitous in combinatorics. The algorithmic questions are instances of approximate counting and sampling for a hypergraph hard-core model. Estimating the probability that $G(n,p)$ has no triangles is a fundamental question in probabilistic combinatorics and one that has led to the development of many important tools in the field. Through the work of several authors, the asymptotics of the logarithm of this probability are known if $p =o( n^{-1/2})$ or if $p =\omega( n^{-1/2})$. The regime $p = \Theta(n^{-1/2})$ is more mysterious, as this range witnesses a dramatic change in the the typical structural properties of $G(n,p)$ conditioned on triangle-freeness. As we show, this change in structure has a profound impact on the performance of sampling algorithms. We give two different efficient sampling algorithms for triangle-free graphs (and complementary algorithms to approximate the triangle-freeness large deviation probability), one that is efficient when $p < c/\sqrt{n}$ and one that is efficient when $p > C/\sqrt{n}$ for constants $c, C>0$. The latter algorithm involves a new approach for dealing with large defects in the setting of sampling from low-temperature spin models.

Lower tails for triangles inside the critical window

Abstract:We study the probability that the random graph $G(n,p)$ is triangle-free. When $p =o(n^{-1/2})$ or $p = \omega(n^{-1/2})$ the asymptotics of the logarithm of this probability are known via Janson's inequality in the former case and via regularity or hypergraph container methods in the latter case. We prove for the first time an asymptotic formula for the logarithm of this probability when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ a sufficiently small constant. More generally, we study lower-tail large deviations for triangles in random graphs: the probability that $G(n,p)$ has at most $\eta$ times its expected number of triangles, when $p = c n^{-1/2}$ for $c$ and $\eta \in [0,1)$ constant. Our results apply for all $c$ if $\eta \ge .4993$ and for $c$ small enough otherwise. For $\eta$ small (including the case of triangle-freeness), we prove that a phase transition occurs as $c$ varies, in the sense of a non-analyticity of the rate function, while for $\eta \ge .4993$ we prove that no phase transition occurs. On the other hand for the random graph $G(n,m)$, with $m = b n^{3/2}$, we show that a phase transition occurs in the lower-tail problem for triangles as $b$ varies for \emph{every} $\eta \in [0,1)$. Our method involves ingredients from algorithms and statistical physics including the cluster expansion and concentration inequalities for contractive Markov chains.

Percolation critical probabilities of matching lattice-pairs

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition is established for the strict inequality $p_c(G_*)<p_c(G)$ between the critical probabilities of site percolation on a quasi-transitive, plane graph $G$ and on its matching graph $G_*$. It is assumed that $G$ is properly embedded in either the Euclidean or the hyperbolic plane. When $G$ is transitive, strict inequality holds if and only if $G$ is not a triangulation. The basic approach is the standard method of enhancements, but its implemention has complexity arising from the non-Euclidean (hyperbolic) space, the study of site (rather than bond) percolation, and the generality of the assumption of quasi-transitivity. This result is complementary to the work of the authors ("Hyperbolic site percolation", <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.00981" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.00981">arXiv:2203.00981</a>) on the equality $p_u(G) + p_c(G_*) = 1$, where $p_u$ is the critical probability for the existence of a unique infinite open cluster. It implies for transitive $G$ that $p_u(G) + p_c(G) \ge 1$, with equality if and only if $G$ is a triangulation.

Abstract:Several results are presented for site percolation on quasi-transitive, planar graphs $G$ with one end, when properly embedded in either the Euclidean or hyperbolic plane. If $(G_1,G_2)$ is a matching pair derived from some quasi-transitive mosaic $M$, then $p_u(G_1)+p_c(G_2)=1$, where $p_c$ is the critical probability for the existence of an infinite cluster, and $p_u$ is the critical value for the existence of a unique such cluster. This fulfils and extends to the hyperbolic plane an observation of Sykes and Essam(1964), and it extends to quasi-transitive site models a theorem of Benjamini and Schramm (Theorem 3.8, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 14 (2001) 487--507) for transitive bond percolation. It follows that $p_u (G)+p_c (G_*)=p_u(G_*)+p_c(G)=1$, where $G_*$ denotes the matching graph of $G$. In particular, $p_u(G)+p_c(G)\ge 1$ and hence, when $G$ is amenable we have $p_c(G)=p_u(G) \ge \frac12$. When combined with the main result of the companion paper by the same authors ("Percolation critical probabilities of matching lattice-pairs", Random Struct. Alg. 2024), we obtain for transitive $G$ that the strict inequality $p_u(G)+p_c(G)> 1$ holds if and only if $G$ is not a triangulation. A key technique is a method for expressing a planar site percolation process on a matching pair in terms of a dependent bond process on the corresponding dual pair of graphs. Amongst other things, the results reported here answer positively two conjectures of Benjamini and Schramm (Conjectures 7 and 8, Electron. Comm. Probab. 1 (1996) 71--82) in the case of quasi-transitive graphs.

The cycle double cover conjecture from the perspective of percolation theory on iterated line graphs

Abstract:The cycle double cover conjecture is a long standing problem in graph theory, which links local properties, the valency of a vertex and no bridges, and a global property of the graph, being covered by a particular set of cycles. We tackle this problem via an interpretation motivated by notions from percolation theory. Our approach consists in a lift of walks and cycles in $G$ to sets of open and closed edges on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$, the line graph of the line graph of $G$. We exploit that triangles are preserved by the line graph operator to obtain a one-to-one mapping from walks in the underlying graph $G$ to walks on $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$ minus a certain subset of its triangles. The final argument is then inspired by percolation theory, using and flipping $\lbrace 0,1\rbrace$ labels on the resulting object to open or block specific edges in $\mathcal{L}(\mathcal{L}(G))$ to be traversed by a walk. We prove that there is a labeling such that its projection back to $G$ implies a double cycle cover, if $G$ is an simple bridgeless triangle-free cubic graph.

Local central limit theorem for triangle counts in sparse random graphs

Abstract:Let $X_H$ be the number of copies of a fixed graph $H$ in $G(n,p)$. In 2016, Gilmer and Kopparty conjectured that a local central limit theorem should hold for $X_H$ as long as $H$ is connected, $p \gg n^{-1/m(H)}$ and $n^2(1-p)\gg 1$. Recently, Sah and Sahwney showed that the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture holds for constant $p$. In this paper, we show that the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture holds for triangle counts in the sparse range. More precisely, if $p \in (4n^{-1/2}, 1/2)$, then \[\sup_{x\in \mathcal{L}}\left| \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}e^{-x^2/2}-\sigma\cdot \mathbb{P}(X^* = x)\right|=n^{-1/2+o(1)}p^{1/2},\] where $\sigma^2 = \mathbb{V}\text{ar}(X_{K_3})$, $X^{*}=(X_{K_3}-\mathbb{E}(X_{K_3}))/\sigma$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is the support of $X^*$. By combining our result with the results of Röllin--Ross and Gilmer--Kopparty, this establishes the Gilmer--Kopparty conjecture for triangle counts for $n^{-1}\ll p < c$, for any constant $c\in (0,1)$. Our quantitative result is enough to prove that the triangle counts converge to an associated normal distribution also in the $\ell_1$-distance. This is the first local central limit theorem for subgraph counts above the $m_2$-density.

Abstract:We prove Schramm's locality conjecture for Bernoulli bond percolation on transitive graphs: If $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of infinite vertex-transitive graphs converging locally to a vertex-transitive graph $G$ and $p_c(G_n) \neq 1$ for every $n \geq 1$ then $\lim_{n\to\infty} p_c(G_n)=p_c(G)$. Equivalently, the critical probability $p_c$ defines a continuous function on the space $\mathcal{G}^*$ of infinite vertex-transitive graphs that are not one-dimensional. As a corollary of the proof, we obtain a new proof that $p_c(G)<1$ for every infinite vertex-transitive graph that is not one-dimensional.

Critical frontier of the Potts and percolation models in triangular-type and kagome-type lattices I: Closed-form expressions

Abstract:We consider the Potts model and the related bond, site, and mixed site-bond percolation problems on triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and derive closed-form expressions for the critical frontier. For triangular-type lattices the critical frontier is known, usually derived from a duality consideration in conjunction with the assumption of a unique transition. Our analysis, however, is rigorous and based on an established result without the need of a uniqueness assumption, thus firmly establishing all derived results. For kagome-type lattices the exact critical frontier is not known. We derive a closed-form expression for the Potts critical frontier by making use of a homogeneity assumption. The closed-form expression is new, and we apply it to a host of problems including site, bond, and mixed site-bond percolation on various lattices. It yields exact thresholds for site percolation on kagome, martini, and other lattices, and is highly accurate numerically in other applications when compared to numerical determination.

Abstract:Abstract Bollobás and Nikiforov (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B. 97 (2007) 859–865) conjectured the following. If G is a Kr+1-free graph on at least r+1 vertices and m edges, then ${\rm{\lambda }}_1^2(G) + {\rm{\lambda }}_2^2(G) \le (r - 1)/r \cdot 2m$, where λ1 (G)and λ2 (G) are the largest and the second largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix A(G), respectively. In this paper we confirm the conjecture in the case r=2, by using tools from doubly stochastic matrix theory, and also characterize all families of extremal graphs. Motivated by classic theorems due to Erdös and Nosal respectively, we prove that every non-bipartite graph of order and size contains a triangle if one of the following is true: (i) ${{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(G) \ge \sqrt {m - 1} $ and $G \ne {C_5} \cup (n - 5){K_1}$, and (ii) ${{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(G) \ge {{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}}))$ and $G \ne S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}})$, where $S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}})$ is obtained from ${K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}}$ by subdividing an edge. Both conditions are best possible. We conclude this paper with some open problems.
Isoperimetric Inequalities and Supercritical Percolation on High-Dimensional Graphs

Abstract:It is known that many different types of finite random subgraph models undergo quantitatively similar phase transitions around their percolation thresholds, and the proofs of these results rely on isoperimetric properties of the underlying host graph. Recently, the authors showed that such a phase transition occurs in a large class of regular high-dimensional product graphs, generalising a classic result for the hypercube. In this paper we give new isoperimetric inequalities for such regular high-dimensional product graphs, which generalise the well-known isoperimetric inequality of Harper for the hypercube, and are asymptotically sharp for a wide range of set sizes. We then use these isoperimetric properties to investigate the structure of the giant component in supercritical percolation on these product graphs, that is, when , where d is the degree of the product graph and is a small enough constant. We show that typically has edge-expansion . Furthermore, we show that likely contains a linear-sized subgraph with vertex-expansion . These results are best possible up to the logarithmic factor in d . Using these likely expansion properties, we determine, up to small polylogarithmic factors in d , the likely diameter of as well as the typical mixing time of a lazy random walk on . Furthermore, we show the likely existence of a cycle of length . These results not only generalise, but also improve substantially upon the known bounds in the case of the hypercube, where in particular the likely diameter and typical mixing time of were previously only known to be polynomial in d .

Abstract:We give a description of finite 4-primary groups with disconnected Gruenberg–Kegel graph containing a triangle. As a corollary, finite groups whose Gruenberg–Kegel graph coincides with the Gruenberg–Kegel graph of 3 D 4 (2) are exemplified, which generalizes V. D. Mazurov' description of finite groups isospectral to the group 3 D 4 (2).

Non-triviality of the phase transition for percolation on finite transitive graphs

Abstract:We prove that if $(G_n)_{n\geq1}=((V_n,E_n))_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of finite, vertex-transitive graphs with bounded degrees and $|V_n|\to\infty$ that is at least $(1+\epsilon)$-dimensional for some $\epsilon>0$ in the sense that \[\mathrm{diam} (G_n)=O\left(|V_n|^{1/(1+\epsilon)}\right) \text{ as $n\to\infty$}\] then this sequence of graphs has a non-trivial phase transition for Bernoulli bond percolation. More precisely, we prove under these conditions that for each $0<\alpha <1$ there exists $p_c(\alpha)<1$ such that for each $p\geq p_c(\alpha)$, Bernoulli-$p$ bond percolation on $G_n$ has a cluster of size at least $\alpha |V_n|$ with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to \infty$. In fact, we prove more generally that there exists a universal constant $a$ such that the same conclusion holds whenever \[\mathrm{diam} (G_n)=O\left(\frac{|V_n|}{(\log |V_n|)^a}\right) \text{ as $n\to\infty$.}\] This verifies a conjecture of Benjamini up to the value of the constant $a$, which he suggested should be $1$. We also prove a generalization of this result to quasitransitive graph sequences with a bounded number of vertex orbits and prove that one may indeed take $a=1$ when the graphs $G_n$ are all Cayley graphs of Abelian groups. A key step in our proof is to adapt the methods of Duminil-Copin, Goswami, Raoufi, Severo, and Yadin from infinite graphs to finite graphs. This adaptation also leads to an isoperimetric criterion for infinite graphs to have a nontrivial uniqueness phase (i.e., to have $p_u<1$) which is of independent interest. We also prove that the set of possible values of the critical probability of an infinite quasitransitive graph has a gap at $1$ in the sense that for every $k,n<\infty$ there exists $\epsilon>0$ such that every infinite graph $G$ of degree at most $k$ whose vertex set has at most $n$ orbits under Aut$(G)$ either has $p_c=1$ or $p_c\leq 1-\epsilon$.

Abstract:There are four non-isomorphic configurations of triples that can form a triangle in a $3$-uniform hypergraph. Forbidding different combinations of these four configurations, fifteen extremal problems can be defined, several of which already appeared in the literature in some different context. Here we systematically study all of these problems solving the new cases exactly or asymptotically. In many cases we also characterize the extremal constructions.

Abstract:We study critical site percolation on the triangular lattice. We find the difference of the probabilities of having a percolation interface to the right and to the left of two given points in the scaling limit. This generalizes both Cardy's and Schramm's formulae. The generalization involves a new interesting discrete analytic observable and an unexpected conformal mapping.

Abstract:Almost 50 years ago Erdős and Purdy asked the following question: Given n points in the plane, how many triangles can be approximate congruent to equilateral triangles? They pointed out that by dividing the points evenly into three small clusters built around the three vertices of a fixed equilateral triangle, one gets at least such approximate copies. In this paper we provide a matching upper bound and thereby answer their question. More generally, for every triangle T we determine the maximum number of approximate congruent triangles to T in a point set of size n . Parts of our proof are based on hypergraph Turán theory: for each point set in the plane and a triangle T , we construct a 3-uniform hypergraph , which contains no hypergraph as a subgraph from a family of forbidden hypergraphs . Our upper bound on the number of edges of will determine the maximum number of triangles that are approximate congruent to T .

Bollobás-Nikiforov Conjecture for graphs with not so many triangles

Abstract:Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for any graph $G \neq K_n$ with $m$ edges \[ \lambda_1^2+\lambda_2^2\le \bigg( 1-\frac{1}{\omega(G)}\bigg)2m\] where $\lambda_1$ and $\lambda_2$ denote the two largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$, and $\omega$ denotes the clique number of $G$. This conjecture was recently verified for triangle-free graphs by Lin, Ning and Wu and for regular graphs by Zhang. Elphick, Wocjan and Linz proposed a generalization of this conjecture. In this note, we verify this generalized conjecture for the family of graphs on $m$ edges, which contain at most $O(m^{1.5-\varepsilon})$ triangles for some $\varepsilon > 0$. In particular, we show that the conjecture is true for planar graphs, book-free graphs and cycle-free graphs.

Random Triangle Theory with Geometry and Applications

Abstract:What is the probability that a random triangle is acute? We explore this old question from a modern viewpoint, taking into account linear algebra, shape theory, numerical analysis, random matrix theory, the Hopf fibration, and much much more. One of the best distributions of random triangles takes all six vertex coordinates as independent standard Gaussians. Six can be reduced to four by translation of the center to $(0,0)$ or reformulation as a 2x2 matrix problem. In this note, we develop shape theory in its historical context for a wide audience. We hope to encourage other to look again (and differently) at triangles. We provide a new constructive proof, using the geometry of parallelians, of a central result of shape theory: Triangle shapes naturally fall on a hemisphere. We give several proofs of the key random result: that triangles are uniformly distributed when the normal distribution is transferred to the hemisphere. A new proof connects to the distribution of random condition numbers. Generalizing to higher dimensions, we obtain the "square root ellipticity statistic" of random matrix theory. Another proof connects the Hopf map to the SVD of 2 by 2 matrices. A new theorem describes three similar triangles hidden in the hemisphere. Many triangle properties are reformulated as matrix theorems, providing insight to both. This paper argues for a shift of viewpoint to the modern approaches of random matrix theory. As one example, we propose that the smallest singular value is an effective test for uniformity. New software is developed and applications are proposed.
