Neutron-proton pairing in the unstable N=Z nuclei of the f-shell through two-nucleon transfer reactions

Abstract:Pair transfer is a unique tool to study pairing correlations in nuclei. Neutron-proton pairing is investigated in the N=Z nuclei of the f-shell, through the reaction (p,3He) in inverse kinematics, that allows to populate at the same time the lowest J=0+, T=1 (isovector pairing) state and J=1+, T=0 (isoscalar pairing) state. Radioactive beams of 56Ni and 52Fe produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility combined with particle and gamma-ray detection make it possible to carry out this study from 48Cr (mid-shell nucleus) to 56Ni (doubly-magic nucleus). The cross-sections were extracted and compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations performed with neutron-proton amplitudes obtained from shell model calculations with GXPF1 interaction. Very low cross-sections for the J=1+,T=0 state (isoscalar channel) were observed. The cross-section for 56Ni is one of order of magnitude lower than for 40Ca showing a strong reduction of the isoscalar channel in the f-shell as compared to the sd-shell. On the other hand, the increase of the cross-section towards the middle of the shell for the isovector channel points towards a possible superfluid phase.

Abstract:Sensitivity of the direct nuclear reaction to the exotic structure of the unstable nuclei is outlined. The transfer reaction induced by 6 He on a 9 Be target at 25 MeV/u is described. The theoretical analysis using CRC model supports the di-neutron configuration of the two valence neutrons in 6 He . Preliminary calculation for 17 Ne were introduced which indicates the advantage of using transfer reaction to clarify the s-wave or d-wave configuration of the valence protons.

Abstract:Low-energy multinucleon transfer reactions are shown to be very effective tool for the production and spectroscopic study of light exotic nuclei. The corresponding cross sections are found to be significantly larger as compared with high energy fragmentation reactions. Several optimal reactions for the production of extremely neutron rich isotopes of elements with Z=6-14 are proposed.

Abstract:While forming an ($A$+2) nucleus from a nucleus $A$ via a two-neutron transfer reaction, the constructive interference of the many possible reaction channels favors significant pairing enhancement through the continuum of the intermediate ($A$+1) nucleus [Phys. Lett. B \textbf{834} 137413 (2022)]. I analyse this situation in more generality, from the point of view of a varying pairing field and different continua leading to the formation of ($A$+2) nucleus. I consider $^6$He and $^{22}$C, described as housing two-neutrons in orbitals of $^5$He and $^{21}$C, respectively. The different possible situations manifest that the continuum correlations are extremely crucial to the extension of the pairing enhancement observed in the system.

Two-neutron transfer reactions as a tool to study the interplay between shape coexistence and quantum phase transitions

Abstract:The goal of this study is to find an observable that could distinguish between both phenomena, shape coexistence and quantum phase transitions. The selected observable to be analyzed is the two-neutron transfer intensity between the 0+ states in the parent and daughter nuclei. The framework in which the study is done is the Interacting Boson Model (IBM), including its version with configuration mixing (IBM-CM). In order to generate the wave functions of the isotope chains of interest, needed for calculating transfer intensities, previous systematic studies with IBM and IBM-CM are taken without changing the parameters. Results for two-neutron transfer intensities are presented for Zr, Hg and Pt isotopic chains using IBM-CM and, moreover, the same is done for Zr, Pt and Sm isotopic chains using IBM with just a single configuration, i.e., without using configuration mixing. In the case of Zr, the two-neutron transfer intensities between the ground states provide a clear observable indicating that normal and intruder configurations coexist in the low-lying spectrum and that they cross at A=98->100, and this could allow to disentangle whether or not shape coexistence is inducing a given QPT. In the case of Pt, where shape coexistence is present and the regular and the intruder configurations cross for the ground state, there is almost no influence in the value of the two-neutron transfer, neither in the case of Hg where the ground state always has regular nature. For the Sm isotope chain that is one of the quantum phase transition paradigms, the value of the two-neutron transfer is strongly affected.

Analysis of multinucleon transfer reactions involving spherical and statically deformed nuclei using a Langevin-type approach

Abstract:An increasing interest in multinucleon transfer processes in low-energy deep inelastic (damped) collisions of heavy ions appeared in recent years is due, in part, to by the possibility of using them as a method of production of heavy neutron-enriched nuclei. Possible promising projectile-target combinations include nuclei deformed in the ground state (e.g., actinides). Mutual orientations of such the nuclei in the entrance channel of the reaction may significantly influence the reaction dynamics. Available experimental data on multinucleon transfer reactions with statically deformed as well as spherical heavy nuclei 144Sm + 144Sm, 154Sm + 154Sm, 160Gd + 186W, and 208Pb + 208Pb/238U have been analyzed within the developed model. A good agreement of the calculated quantities with the corresponding experimental data is reached. Special attention in the paper is paid to analysis of production possibility of the neutron-enriched isotopes of heavy and superheavy elements in multinucleon transfer processes in the 238U + 238U/248Cm/254Es collisions.

Abstract:The coupled reaction channel approach has proven to be quite effective in explaining the mechanism of nucleon transfer in heavy-ion reactions. Nevertheless, significant ambiguities remain regarding the selection of potential parameters and the states of the nuclei that should be coupled together for a specific reaction channel. Using the coupled reaction channel formalism, we have analyzed the excitation functions for one- and two-neutron transfer in 6,7 Li-induced reactions on various targets. Spectroscopic amplitudes are taken from existing literature and shell model calculations. The one-neutron transfer cross sections from 6 Li+ 93 Nb and 7 Li+ 115 In reactions are reasonably well reproduced by coupled reaction channel calculations. A reasonable match for the measured cross sections was obtained for the two-neutron transfer in 7 Li+ 181 Ta reaction by employing the extreme cluster model.

Abstract:The nucleon-nucleon pairing forces were studied under the relativistic mean-field theory with the paring corrections by BCS approximation.The coupled equations of motion were solved by self-consistency with the interaction parameter set NL3.The gap parameters were fixed by reproducing ground state properties of 11950Sn,14058Ce,and 17871Lu.The properties of two medium isotope chains Ca and K and three heavy isotope chains Ce,Pr and Nd were investigated.The results indicated that the strength of the pairing forces Gn and Gp have a strong shell effects for the medium(N=20 and 28) and heavy nuclei(N=82) near the β stability line,thus a new method to search new magic numbers was provided.

Abstract:Multinucleon transfer (MNT) reactions have received increasing interest in the synthesis of neutron-rich nuclei due to the distinct limitations of other reactions, particularly in the N=126 region, which represents the last waiting point of astrophysical nucleosynthesis. However, it is still a challenging endeavor to describe the MNT process between heavy nuclei. In this study, we develop a theoretical framework that couples the Langevin dynamics iteratively with the master equation, which is based on the HICOL model (CLIM-H). The random transfer process is achieved by solving the master equation using the Monte Carlo method, where the parametric transfer probability with a Q window is employed. The isotope distributions for Ni58,64+Pb208 , as well as the angular and isotope distributions of the recently measured Pb206+Sn118 , could be generally reproduced based on this method. Contrary to previous theoretical predictions which show a high production cross section of N=126 nuclei, current calculations do not reveal appreciable cross sections. The distinguishing characteristic of this approach is its ability to generate not only the mass distribution but also the charge distribution self-consistently, which could provide references for many other studies using the multidimensional Langevin equation considering only the mass asymmetry degree of freedom. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.024617 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Recent data resulting from studies of two-nucleon transfer reaction on 11Li, analyzed through a unified nuclear-structure-direct-reaction theory have provided strong direct as well as indirect confirmation, through the population of the first excited state of 9Li and of the observation of a strongly quenched ground state transition, of the prediction that phonon mediated pairing interaction is the main mechanism binding the neutron halo of the 8.5 ms-lived 11Li nucleus. In other words, the ground state of 11Li can be viewed as a neutron Cooper pair bound to the 9Li core, mainly through the exchange of collective vibration of the core and of the pigmy resonance arizing from the sloshing back and forth of the neutron halo against the protons of the core, the mean field leading to unbound two particle states, a situation essentially not altered by the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction acting between the halo neutrons. Two-neutron pick-up data, together with (t,p) data on 7Li, suggest the existence of a pairing vibrational band based on 9Li, whose members can be excited with the help of inverse kinematic experiments as was done in the case of 11Li(p,t)9Li reaction. The deviation from harmonicity can provide insight into the workings of medium polarization effects on Cooper pair nuclear pairing, let alone specific information concering the "rigidity" of the N=6 shell closure. Further information concerning these questions is provided by the predicted absolute differential cross sections associated with the reactions 12Be(p,t)10Be(gs) and 12Be(p,t)10Be(pv)(~10Be(p,t)8Be(gs)). In particular, concerning this last reaction, predictions of \sigma_{abs} can change by an order of magnitude depending on whether the halo properties associated with the d_{5/2} orbital are treated selfconsistently in calculating the ground state correlations of the (pair removal) mode, or not.

Abstract:The study of single-nucleon transfer reactions for the 18O+ 48Ti system was pursued at the energy of 275 MeV as part of a more systematic study which is undertaken within the NUMEN and NURE experimental campaigns. The aim is to measure the complete set of available reaction network which are characterized by the same initial and final-state wavefunctions as the more suppressed double charge exchange reactions. Understanding the degree of competition between successive nucleon transfer and double charge exchange reactions is crucial for the description of the meson-exchange mechanism. In this respect, angular distribution measurements for one- and twonucleon transfer reactions for the 18O+ 48Ti system were carried out at theMAGNEX facility of INFN-LNS in Catania. An overview of the data analysis for the 48Ti( 18O, 19F) 47Sc and 48Ti( 18O, 17O) 49Ti reactions will be presented.

Abstract:We discuss the reaction mechanism associated with two-particle transfer reactions in a simple one-dimensional model. The reaction process is generated by two colliding wells and we follow in time the evolution of the two-particle wave function, initially concentrated in one of the two wells. At the end of the process one can single out the population of the different final channels, including one and two-particle transfer. When a residual short-ranged pairing interaction among the two particles is included in addition to the moving potentials, one observes a clear enhancement of the pair transfer as compared to the expectation of a pure sequential one-particle transfers. The final “exact” solution can be compared to the one obtained within different reaction and structure models (as coupled-channels, first-order approximation, approximate treatment of the continuum, etc), so providing important information on the reaction mechanism associated with the different processes.

Abstract:With the development of radioactive beam facilities, studies concerning the shell evolution of unstable nuclei have recently gained prominence. Intruder components, particularly s-wave intrusion, in the low-lying states of light neutron-rich nuclei near $$N = 8$$ are of importance in the study of shell evolution. The use of single-nucleon transfer reactions in inverse kinematics has been a sensitive tool that can be used to quantitatively investigate the single-particle orbital component of selectively populated states. The spin-parity, spectroscopic factor (or single-particle strength), and effective single-particle energy can all be extracted from such reactions. These observables are often useful to explain the nature of shell evolution, and to constrain, check, and test the parameters used in nuclear structure models. In this article, the experimental studies of the intruder components in low-lying states of neutron-rich nuclei of He, Li, Be, B, and C isotopes using various single-nucleon transfer reactions are reviewed. The focus is laid on the precise determination of the intruder s-wave strength in low-lying states.
Single-particle spectroscopic strength from nucleon transfer reactions with a three-nucleon force contribution

Abstract:The direct reaction theory widely used to study single-particle spectroscopic strength in nucleon transfer experiments is based on a Hamiltonian with two-nucleon interactions only. We point out that in reactions with a loosely-bound projectile, where clustering and breakup effects are important, an additional three-body force arises due to three-nucleon ($3N$) interaction between two nucleons belonging to different clusters in the projectile and a target nucleon. We study the effects of this force on nucleon transfer in $(d,p)$ and $(d,n)$ reactions on $^{56}$Ni, $^{48}$Ca, $^{26m}$Al and $^{24}$O targets at deuteron incident energies between 4 and 40 MeV/nucleon. Deuteron breakup is treated exactly within a continuum discretized coupled-channel approach. It was found that an additional three-body force can noticeably alter the angular distributions at forward angles, with consequences for spectroscopic factors' studies. Additional study of transfer to $2p$ continuum in the $^{25}$F$(p,2p)^{24}$O reaction, involving the same overlap function as in the $^{24}$O($d,n)^{25}$F case, revealed that $3N$ force affects the $(d,n)$ and $(p,2p)$ reactions in a similar way, increasing the cross sections and decreasing spectroscopic factors, although its influence at the main peak of $(p,2p)$ is weaker. The angle-integrated cross sections are found to be less sensitive to the 3N force contribution, they increase by less than 20$\%$. Including 3N interactions in nucleon removal reactions makes an essential step towards bringing together nuclear structure theory, where 3N force is routinely used, and nuclear direct reaction theory, based on two-nucleon interactions only.

Deuteron-proton charge exchange reaction at small transfer momentum

Abstract:The charge-exchange reaction pd -> npp at 1 GeV projectile proton energy is studied. This reaction is considered in a special kinematics, when the transfer momentum from the beam proton to fast outgoing neutron is close to zero. Our approach is based on the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas formulation of the multiple-scattering theory for the three-nucleon system. The matrix inversion method has been applied to take account of the final state interaction (FSI) contributions. The differential cross section, tensor analyzing power $C_{0,yy}$, vector-vector $C_{y,y}$ and vector-tensor $C_{y,xz}$ spin correlation parameters of the initial particles are presented. It is shown, that the FSI effects play a very important role under such kinematical conditions. The high sensitivity of the considered observables to the elementary nucleon-nucleon amplitudes has been obtained.

Abstract:A generalization of the recently discovered cooperative internal conversion process is investigated theoretically. In the cooperative internal conversion process by proton exchange investigated the coupling of bound-free electron and proton transitions due to the dipole term of their Coulomb interaction permits cooperation of two nuclei leading to proton exchange and an electron emission. General expression of the cross section of the process obtained in the one particle spherical nuclear shell model is presented. As a numerical example the cooperative internal conversion process by proton exchange in $Al$ is dealt with. As a further generalization, cooperative internal conversion process by heavy charged particle exchange and as an example of it the cooperative internal conversion process by triton exchange is discussed. The process is also connected to the field of nuclear waste disposal.

Abstract:Nucleon transfer reactions have played a fundamental role in understanding the single-particle components, shell structure and collective properties of atomic nuclei. The conventional distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) envisioned the nucleon transfer reaction as a one-step process, which proceeds directly from the ground state of the target nucleus to a state of the residual nucleus. The coupled channels Born approximation (CCBA) and coupled reaction channels (CRC) theories evolved because a number of nucleon transfer reaction cross sections could not be reconciled within the DWBA. These coupled channels models revealed that, in addition to the "one-step" process of the DWBA, "multi-step" nucleon transfer processes involving accessary pathways can participate in populating the final nuclear state. In the CCBA, the auxiliary pathways involved inelastic excitations of the target and/or residual nucleus, whereas, in the CRC, the pathways included sequential nucleon transfer passing through nuclear states of an intermediate partition. Coherent addition of contributions from one-step and multi-step nucleon transfer processes resulted in dramatic alterations in reaction cross sections, which were experimentally confirmed. The CCBA and CRC linked the structure of the nuclei participating in a reaction to modalities of nucleon transfer arising during the relative motion between the interacting ions. These complementary theories inexorably changed physicists' interpretations of nucleon transfer reactions and, in doing so, heralded in the new field of direct heavy-ion reactions.

Abstract:Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions at energies around the Coulomb barrier offer a vital opportunity to study rich physics of nuclear structure and dynamics. Despite the continuous development in the field, we have still limited knowledge about how deformation - one of the representative nuclear structures - affects multinucleon transfer reactions. Purpose: To shed light on the effect of deformation in multinucleon transfer processes, we study the $^{16}$O+$^{154}$Sm reaction at $E_{\rm lab}$=85 MeV (around the Coulomb barrier) and 134 MeV (substantially above the Coulomb barrier), where the target nucleus, $^{154}$Sm, is a well-established, deformed nucleus. Results: Angular distributions for elastic scattering and for various transfer channels were measured over a wide angular range at the BARC-TIFR pelletron-Linac accelerator facility, Mumbai. The $Q$-value- and angle-integrated isotope production cross sections have been extracted from the measured angular distributions. The experimental data are analyzed along with time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. For the lower incident energy case, we find a reasonable agreement between the measurements and the TDHF calculations for a-few-nucleon transfer channels; whereas TDHF underestimates cross sections for many-nucleon transfers, consistent with earlier works. On the other side, we find that calculated cross sections for secondary reaction products for the higher incident energy case, qualitatively explains the measured trends of isotopic distributions observed for the lower energy. The latter observation indicates possible underestimation of excitation energies in the present TDHF+GEMINI analysis. Although certain orientation effects were observed in TDHF results, it is difficult to disentangle them from the $Q$-value- and angle-integrated production cross sections.
