Abstract:In his 1973 paper Quillen proved a resolution theorem for the K-Theory of an exact category; his proof was homotopic in nature. By using the main result of a paper by Nenashev, we are able to give an algebraic proof of Quillen's Resolution Theorem for K_1 of an exact category.

Such algebras include both of Artin-Schelter regular algebras of types (12221) and (13431). Under certain conditions, a module with nonpure resolution is decomposed to form an extension by two modules with pure resolutions.

Abstract:We show that Quillen's resolution theorem for K-theory also applies to exact $\infty$-categories. We introduce heart structures on a stable $\infty$-category, generalizing weight structures, and using resolution ideas, we show that the category of stable $\infty$-categories equipped with a heart structure fully-faithfully embeds into the category of exact $\infty$-categories. Consequently, we show a generalized theorem of the heart for K-theory, which is equivalent to its invariance under passage to the stable envelope of exact $\infty$-category in the image of the heart functor. Finally, leveraging the above, we show that K-theory of endomorphisms satisfies the theorem of the heart for weight structures, even allowing coefficients in a suitable bimodule.

Abstract:Quillen's Resolution Theorem in algebraic $K$-theory provides a powerful computational tool for calculating $K$-groups of exact categories. At the level of $K_0$, this result goes back to Grothendieck. In this article, we first establish an extriangulated version of Grothendieck's Resolution Theorem. Second, we use this Extriangulated Resolution Theorem to gain new insight into the index theory of triangulated categories. Indeed, we propose an index with respect to an extension-closed subcategory $\mathscr{N}$ of a triangulated category $\mathscr{C}$ and we prove an additivity formula with error term. Our index recovers the index with respect to a contravariantly finite, rigid subcategory $\mathscr{X}$ defined by Jørgensen and the second author, as well as an isomorphism between $K_0^{\mathsf{sp}}(\mathscr{X})$ and the Grothendieck group of a relative extriangulated structure $\mathscr{C}_{R}^{\mathscr{X}}$ on $\mathscr{C}$ when $\mathscr{X}$ is $n$-cluster tilting. In addition, we generalize and enhance some results of Fedele. Our perspective allows us to remove certain restrictions and simplify some arguments. Third, as another application of our Extriangulated Resolution Theorem, we show that if $\mathscr{X}$ is $n$-cluster tilting in an abelian category, then the index introduced by Reid gives an isomorphism $K_0(\mathscr{C}_R^{\mathscr{X}}) \cong K_0^{\mathsf{sp}}(\mathscr{X})$.

Abstract:We establish connections between the concepts of Noetherian, regular coherent, and regular n-coherent categories for Z-linear categories with finitely many objects and the corresponding notions for unital rings. These connections enable us to obtain a negative K-theory vanishing result, a fundamental theorem, and a homotopy invariance result for the K-theory of Z-linear categories.

Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.

Categorical resolutions of filtered schemes

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of the theorem by Kuznetsov and Lunts stating that any separated scheme of finite type over a field of characteristic zero admits a categorical resolution of singularities. Their construction makes use of the fact that every variety (over a field of characteristic zero) can be resolved by a finite sequence of blow-ups along smooth centres. We merely require the existence of (projective) resolutions. To accomplish this we put the $\mathcal{A}$-spaces of Kuznetsov and Lunts in a different light, viewing them instead as schemes endowed with finite filtrations. The categorical resolution is then constructed by gluing together differential graded categories obtained from a hypercube of finite length filtered schemes.

Abstract:We give a fully constructive proof that there is a proper cartesian $\omega$-combinatorial model structure on the category of simplicial sets, whose generating cofibrations and trivial cofibrations are the usual boundary inclusion and horn inclusion. The main difference with classical mathematics is that constructively not all monomorphisms are cofibrations (only those satisfying some decidability conditions) and not every object is cofibrant. The proof relies on three main ingredients: First, our construction of a weak model categories on simplicial sets, then the interplay with the semi-simplicial versions of this weak model structure and finally, the use of Kan Ex$^{\infty}$-functor, and more precisely of S.Moss' direct proof that the natural map $X \rightarrow $ Ex$^{\infty} X$ is an anodyne morphism, which we show is constructive when $X$ is cofibrant.
Coherent sheaves and quantum Coulomb branches II: quiver gauge theories and knot homology

Abstract:We continue our study of noncommutative resolutions of Coulomb branches in the case of quiver gauge theories. These include the Slodowy slices in type A and symmetric powers in $\mathbb{C}^2$ as special cases. These resolutions are based on vortex line defects in quantum field theory, but have a precise mathematical description, which in the quiver case is a modification of the formalism of KLRW algebras. While best understood in a context which depends on the geometry of the affine Grassmannian and representation theory in characteristic $p$, we give a description of the Coulomb branches and their commutative and non-commutative resolutions which can be understood purely in terms of algebra. This allows us to construct a purely algebraic version of the knot homology theory defined using string theory by Aganagić, categorifying the Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants for minuscule representations of type ADE Lie algebras. We show that this homological invariant agrees with the categorification of these invariants previously defined by the author, and thus with Khovanov-Rozansky homology in type A.

A poisonous example to explicit resolutions of unbounded complexes

Abstract:We show that various methods for explicitly building resolutions of unbounded complexes in fact fail when applied to a rather simple and explicit complex. We show that one way to rescue these methods is to assume Roos (Ab.4$^*$)-$k$ axiom, which we adapt to encompass also resolutions in the framework of relative homological algebra. In the end we discuss the existence of model structures for relative homological algebra for unbounded complex under the relative (Ab.4$^*$)-$k$ condition, and present a variety of examples where our results apply.

The Quillen-Lichtenbaum dimension of complex varieties

Abstract:The Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture for smooth complex varieties states that algebraic and topological K-theory with finite coefficients become isomorphic in high degrees. We define the "Quillen-Lichtenbaum dimension" of a variety in terms of the point where this happens, show that it is surprisingly computable, and analyze many examples. It gives an obstruction to rationality, but one that turns out to be weaker than unramified cohomology and some related birational invariants defined by Colliot-Thélène and Voisin using Bloch-Ogus theory. Because it is compatible with semi-orthogonal decompositions, however, it allows us to prove some new cases of the integral Hodge conjecture using homological projective duality, and to compute the higher algebraic K-theory of the Kuznetsov components of the derived categories of some Fano varieties.

Abstract:In this paper we homologically construct a (functorial) BGG resolution of the finite-dimensional simple module of the nilBrauer algebra by using infinity-categorical methods following the reconstruction-from-stratification philosophy, e.g. appearing in Ayala-Mazel-Gee-Rozenblyum. To do so, we prove a fact of independent interest, that half of the nilBrauer algebra is Koszul. This BGG resolution categorifies a character formula of Brundan-Wang-Webster. More generally, we have a (functorial) ``BGG spectral sequence'' which converges to any desired module; this spectral sequence is secretly a resolution when the desired module is finite-dimensional. This spectral sequence also categorifies the character formulae of Brundan-Wang-Webster for any (possibly infinite-dimensional) simple module. We expect the methods used here for producing BGG resolutions to be applicable to other (graded) triangular-based algebras also, especially diagrammatic ones.

The homological theory on quasi-resolving subcategories is studied. It is shown that many results in [1], [2], [4], [5], [6], [8], [13], [14], [17], [18], [22], [25], [26], [27] are unified and naturally generated.

Abstract:We prove basic statements about the Hermitian K-theory of exact form categories with weak equivalences. Notably, we extend a quadratic functor with values in abelian groups from an exact category to its category of bounded chain complexes in a way that does not change Grothendieck-Witt spaces. This is used in joint work with Marlowe for the comparison of the classical 1-categorical version of the Hermitian K-theory of exact categories with the infinity-categorical version of Calmes-Dotto-Harpaz-Hebestreit-Land-Moi-Nardin-Nikolaus-Steimle.

Koszul homomorphisms and universal resolutions in local algebra

Abstract:We define a local homomorphism $(Q,k)\to (R,\ell)$ to be Koszul if its derived fiber $R \otimes^{\mathsf{L}}_Q k$ is formal, and if $\operatorname{Tor}^Q(R,k)$ is Koszul in the classical sense. This recovers the classical definition when $Q$ is a field, and more generally includes all flat deformations of Koszul algebras. The non-flat case is significantly more interesting, and there is no need for examples to be quadratic: all complete intersection and all Golod quotients are Koszul homomorphisms. We show that the class of Koszul homomorphisms enjoys excellent homological properties, and we give many more examples, especially various monomial and Gorenstein examples. We then study Koszul homomorphisms from the perspective of $\mathrm{A}_\infty$-structures on resolutions. We use this machinery to construct universal free resolutions of $R$-modules by generalizing a classical construction of Priddy. The resulting (infinite) free resolution of an $R$-module $M$ is often minimal, and can be described by a finite amount of data whenever $M$ and $R$ have finite projective dimension over $Q$. Our construction simultaneously recovers the resolutions of Shamash and Eisenbud over a complete intersection ring, and the bar resolutions of Iyengar and Burke over a Golod ring, and produces analogous resolutions for various other classes of local rings.

Knot invariants and higher representation theory I: diagrammatic and geometric categorification of tensor products

Abstract:In this paper, we study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. Our aim is to construct knot homologies categorifying Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of knots for arbitrary representations, which will be done in a follow-up paper. We consider an algebraic construction of these categories, via an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the quiver Hecke algebra. One of our primary results is that these categories coincide when both are defined. We also investigate finer structure of these categories. Like many similar representation-theoretic categories, they are standardly stratified and satisfy a double centralizer property with respect to their self-dual modules. The standard modules of the stratification play an important role, as Vermas do in more classical representation theory, as test objects for functors. The existence of these representations has consequences for the structure of previously studied categorifications; it allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of Khovanov and Lauda's 2-category (that its Hom spaces have the expected dimension) in all symmetrizable types, and that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras are symmetric Frobenius.

Abstract:The representations of a quiver Q over a field k (the kQ-modules, where kQ is the path algebra of Q over k) have been studied for a long time, and one knows quite well the structure of the module category modkQ. It seems to be worthwhile to consider also representations of Q over arbitrary finite-dimensional k-algebras A. Here we draw the attention to the case when A=k[ϵ] is the algebra of dual numbers (the factor algebra of the polynomial ring k[T] in one variable T modulo the ideal generated by T2), thus to the Λ-modules, where Λ=kQ[ϵ]=kQ[T]/〈T2〉. The algebra Λ is a 1-Gorenstein algebra, thus the torsionless Λ-modules are known to be of special interest (as the Gorenstein-projective or maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules). They form a Frobenius category L, thus the corresponding stable category L_ is a triangulated category. As we will see, the category L is the category of perfect differential kQ-modules and L_ is the corresponding homotopy category. The category L_ is triangle equivalent to the orbit category of the derived category Db(modkQ) modulo the shift and the homology functor H:modΛ→modkQ yields a bijection between the indecomposables in L_ and those in modkQ. Our main interest lies in the inverse, it is given by the minimal L-approximation. Also, we will determine the kernel of the restriction of the functor H to L and describe the Auslander–Reiten quivers of L and L_.
Algebraic $K$-theory for squares categories

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new formalism for $K$-theory, called squares $K$-theory. This formalism allows us to simultaneously generalize the usual three-term relation $[B] = [A] + [C]$ for an exact sequence $A \hookrightarrow B \twoheadrightarrow C$ or for a subtractive sequence $A\hookrightarrow B \leftarrow C$, by defining $K_0$ of exact and subtractive categories to satisfy a four-term relation $[A]+[D]= [C] + [B]$ for a ``good'' square diagram with these corners. Examples that rely on this formalism are $K$-theory of smooth manifolds of a fixed dimension and $K$-theory of (smooth and) complete varieties. Another application we give of this theory is the construction of a derived motivic measure taking value in the $K$-theory of homotopy sheaves.

Abstract:For any quiver $Q$ and dimension vector $v$, Le Bruyn--Procesi proved that the invariant ring for the action of the change of basis group on the space of representations $\textrm{Rep}(Q,v)$ is generated by the traces of matrix products associated to cycles in the quiver. We generalise this to allow for vertices where the group acts trivially, and we give relations between the generators of the invariant algebra for quivers with relations. As a geometric application, we prove for $n\geq 1$ that the Hilbert scheme of $n$-points on an ADE surface singularity is isomorphic to a Nakajima quiver variety. This allows us to generalise the well known theorem of [Fogarty] by showing that the Hilbert scheme of $n$-points on a normal surface with canonical singularities is a normal variety of dimension $2n$ with canonical singularities. In addition, we show that if $S$ has symplecic singularities over $\mathbb{C}$, then so does the Hilbert scheme of $n$-points on $S$, thereby generalising a result of Beauville.
