Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the lower bound property of the discrete eigenvalues by the rectangular Morley elements of the biharmonic operators in both two and three dimensions. The analysis relies on an identity for the errors of eigenvalues. We explore a refined property of the canonical interpolation operators and use it to analyze the key term in this identity. In particular, we show that such a term is of higher order for two dimensions, and is negative and of second order for three dimensions, which causes a main difficulty. To overcome it, we propose a novel decomposition of the first term in the aforementioned identity. Finally, we establish a saturation condition to show that the discrete eigenvalues are smaller than the exact ones. We present some numerical results to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish several new Lyapunov-type inequalities for two classes of one-dimensional quasilinear elliptic systems of resonant type, which generalize or improve all related existing ones. Then we use the Lyapunov-type inequalities obtained in this paper to derive a better lower bound for the generalized eigenvalues of the one-dimensional quasilinear elliptic system with the Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Abstract:We first investigate the lower bound for higher eigenvalues λ _i of the Laplace operator on a bounded domain and obtain a sharp lower bound. Then, we extent this estimate of the eigenvalues to general cases. Finally, we study the eigenvalues Γ _i for the clamped plate problem and deliver a sharp bound for the clamped plate problem for arbitrary dimension.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a method to produce guaranteed lower bounds for eigenvalues of 2m-th order elliptic operators in n dimensions for $ m\le n$, especially for elliptic operators with variable coefficients. This method is based on the corresponding Morley–Wang–Xu elements in literature and a unified way to estimate the explicit constants related to the $L^2$ error estimates for the interpolation of Morley–Wang–Xu elements.

Abstract:Let Ω be a bounded domain in an n-dimensional Euclidean space Rn. We study eigenvalues of an eigenvalue problem of a system of elliptic equations:{Δu+αgrad(divu)=−σu,in Ω,u|∂Ω=0. Estimates for eigenvalues of the above eigenvalue problem are obtained. Furthermore, we obtain an upper bound on the (k+1)th eigenvalue σk+1. We also obtain sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of two kinds of eigenvalue problems of the biharmonic operator on compact manifolds with boundary and positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to introduce a new systematic method that can produce lower bounds for eigenvalues. The main idea is to use nonconforming finite element methods. The general conclusion herein is that if local approximation properties of nonconforming finite element spaces $V_h$ are better than global continuity properties of $V_h$, corresponding methods will produce lower bounds for eigenvalues. More precisely, under three conditions on continuity and approximation properties of nonconforming finite element spaces we first show abstract error estimates of approximate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Subsequently, we propose one more condition and prove that it is sufficient to guarantee nonconforming finite element methods to produce lower bounds for eigenvalues of symmetric elliptic operators. As one application, we show that this condition hold for most nonconforming elements in literature. As another important application, this condition provides a guidance to modify known nonconforming elements in literature and to propose new nonconforming elements. In fact, we enrich locally the Crouzeix-Raviart element such that the new element satisfies the condition; we propose a new nonconforming element for second order elliptic operators and prove that it will yield lower bounds for eigenvalues. Finally, we prove the saturation condition for most nonconforming elements.

Abstract:We prove Li-Yau-Kröger-type bounds for Neumann-type eigenvalues of the biharmonic operator on bounded domains in a Euclidean space. We also prove sharp estimates for lower order eigenvalues of a biharmonic Steklov problem and of the Laplacian, which directly implies two sharp Reilly-type inequalities for the corresponding first nonzero eigenvalue.

Abstract:Let B subset of R-N be the unit ball. We study the structure of solutions to the semilinear biharmonic problem {Delta(2)u = lambda(1 - u)(-p) in B, 0 < u < 1 in B, u = partial derivative(nu) = 0 ( resp. u = Delta u = 0) on partial derivative B, where p, lambda > 0, which arises in the study of the deflection of charged plates in electrostatic actuators. We study in particular the structure of solutions for N = 2 or 3 and show the existence of mountain-pass solutions under suitable conditions on p. Our results contribute to completing the picture of solutions in previous works. Moreover, we also analyze the asymptotic behavior of the constructed mountain-pass solutions as lambda -> 0.
A positivity preserving property result for the biharmonic operator under partially hinged boundary conditions

Abstract:Abstract It is well known that for higher order elliptic equations, the positivity preserving property (PPP) may fail. In striking contrast to what happens under Dirichlet boundary conditions, we prove that the PPP holds for the biharmonic operator on rectangular domains under partially hinged boundary conditions, i.e., nonnegative loads yield positive solutions. The result follows by fine estimates of the Fourier expansion of the corresponding Green function.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the blow up of a sequence of (both extrinsic and intrinsic) biharmonic maps in dimension four with bounded energy and show that there is no neck in this process. Moreover, we apply the method to provide new proofs to the removable singularity theorem and energy identity theorem of biharmonic maps.

Abstract:In this paper, the following critical biharmonic elliptic problem \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{cases} \Delta^2u= \lambda u+\mu u\ln u^2+|u|^{2^{**}-2}u, &x\in\Omega,\\ u=\dfrac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}=0, &x\in\partial\Omega \end{cases} \end{eqnarray*} is considered, where $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$ is a bounded smooth domain with $N\geq5$. Some interesting phenomenon occurs due to the uncertainty of the sign of the logarithmic term. It is shown, mainly by using Mountain Pass Lemma, that the problem admits at lest one nontrivial weak solution under some appropriate assumptions of $\lambda$ and $\mu$. Moreover, a nonexistence result is also obtained. Comparing the results in this paper with the known ones, one sees that some new phenomena occur when the logarithmic perturbation is introduced.

Abstract:The biharmonic equation/eigenvalue problem is one of the fundamental model problems in mathematics and physics, and has wide applications. In this paper, we study an hp-mixed discontinuous Galerkin method for the biharmonic eigenvalue problem. Based on the work of Gudi et al. [J Sci Comput, 37 (2008)], using piecewise polynomials of degree p >= 3 , we derive the a priori error estimates of the approximate eigenfunction in the broken H 1 norm and L 2 norm which are optimal in h and suboptimal in p. When p = 2 , the approximate eigenfunctions converge but with only suboptimal convergence rate. When p >= 2 and the eigenfunction u is an element of Hs (Q) (s >= p + 1 ), we prove that the convergence rate of approximate eigenvalues reaches 2 p - 2 in h and p-(2s -7) in p. We also discuss the a posterior error es-timates of the approximate eigenvalues and implement the adaptive calculation. Numerical experiments show that the methods are easy to implement and can efficiently compute bi-harmonic eigenvalues. (c) 2023 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc. Abstract:In this paper we study an inverse boundary value problem for the biharmonic operator with first order perturbation. Our geometric setting is that of a bounded simply connected domain in the Euclidean space of dimension three or higher. Assuming that the inaccessible portion of the boundary is flat, and we have knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the complement, we prove logarithmic type stability estimates for both the first and the zeroth order perturbation of the biharmonic operator.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to study the solvability of the following biharmonic Choquard equation: (1) Δ2u−Δu+V(x)u=[|x|−μ∗(K(x)F(x,u))]K(x)f(x,u),x∈R4, (1) where the functions V and K may decay to zero at infinity like (1+|x|α)−1 , with α∈(0,4) , and (1+|x|β)−1 , with β>(8−μ)α/8 , respectively, μ∈(0,4) , f is a continuous function that behaves like eγ0s2 at infinity, for some γ0>0 and F is the primitive of f . By establishing a weighted version of the Adams inequality involving V and K , we investigate the existence of nontrivial solution for problem ( Equation 1 (1) Δ2u−Δu+V(x)u=[|x|−μ∗(K(x)F(x,u))]K(x)f(x,u),x∈R4, (1) ). Furthermore, we establish that the nontrivial solution is a bound state when α∈(0,2) .

Abstract:We quantify the subcriticality of the bilaplacian in dimensions greater than four by providing explicit repulsivity/smallness conditions on complex additive perturbations under which the spectrum remains stable. Our assumptions cover critical Rellich-type potentials too. As a byproduct we obtain uniform resolvent estimates in weighted spaces. Some of the results are new also in the self-adjoint setting.
