Abstract:The wormhole attack is one of the most treacherous attacks projected at the routing layer that can bypass cryptographic measures and derail the entire communication network. It is too difficult to prevent a priori; all the possible countermeasures are either too expensive or ineffective. Indeed, literature solutions either require expensive hardware (typically UWB or secure GPS transceivers) or pose specific constraints to the adversarial behavior (doing or not doing a suspicious action). The proposed solution belongs to the second category because the adversary is assumed to have done one or more known suspicious actions. In this solution, we adopt a heuristic approach to detect wormholes in ad hoc networks based on the detection of their illicit behaviors. Wormhole and post wormhole attacks are often confused in literature; that's why we clearly state that our methodology does not provide a defence against wormholes, but rather against the actions that an adversary does after the wormhole, such as packet dropping, tampering with TTL, replaying and looping, etc. In terms of contributions, the proposed solution addresses the knock-out capability of attackers that is less targeted by the researcher's community. In addition, it neither requires any additional hardware nor a change in it; instead, it is compatible with the existing network stack. The idea is simulated in ns2.30, and the average detection rate of the proposed solution is found to be 98-99%. The theoretical time to detect a wormhole node lies between 0.07-0.71 seconds. But, from the simulation, the average detection and isolation time is 0.67 seconds. In term of packet loss, the proposed solution has a relatively overhead of 22%. It works well in static and mobile scenarios, but the frame losses are higher in mobile scenarios as compared to static ones. The computational complexity of the solution is O(n) . Simulation results advocate that the solution is effective in terms of memory, processing, bandwidth, and energy cost. The solution is validated using statistical parameters such as Accuracy, Precision, F1-Score and Matthews correlation coefficient ( ).

Defending Wireless Networks from Radio Interference Attacks

Abstract:Wireless networks are built upon a shared medium that makes it easy for adversaries to conduct radio interference, or jamming attacks, which effectively cause a denial of service (DoS) of either transmission or reception functionalities. These attacks can be easily accomplished by an adversary by either bypassing MAC-layer protocols, or emitting a radio signal targeted at jamming a particular channel. In this thesis, we examine the issue of jamming wireless networks, and sensor networks in particular, by studying both the attack and defense side of the problem. On the attack side, we present four different jamming attack models that can be used by an adversary to disable the operation of a wireless network, and evaluate their effectiveness in terms of how each method affects the ability of a wireless node to send and receive packets. In order to cope with the problem of jamming, we discuss a two-phase strategy involving the diagnosis of the attack, followed by a suitable defense strategy. For detection, we show that single measurement statistics are not enough to reliably classify the presence of a jamming attack, and propose multimodal detection methods. To cope with jamming, we propose a technique, channel surfing, which involves evading the interferer in the spectral domain. Several different channel surfing models are presented, and we evaluate their effectiveness using a testbed of MICA2 motes. Beyond channel surfing, we overview a second defense strategy whereby it is possible to establish a low data rate jamming resistant communication channel by modulating the interarrival times between jammed packets.
Topological Detection on Wormholes in Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks

Abstract:Wormhole attack is a severe threat to wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Most existing countermeasures either require specialized hardware devices or make strong assumptions on the network in order to capture the specific (partial) symptom induced by wormholes. Those requirements and assumptions limit the applicability of previous approaches. In this paper, we present our attempt to understand the impact and inevitable symptom of wormholes and develop distributed detection methods by making as few restrictions and assumptions as possible. We fundamentally analyze the wormhole problem using a topology methodology and propose an effective distributed approach, which relies solely on network connectivity information, without any requirements on special hardware devices or any rigorous assumptions on network properties. We formally prove the correctness of this design in continuous geometric domains and extend it into discrete domains. We evaluate its performance through extensive simulations.

Abstract:In multi-hop wireless systems, the need for cooperation among nodes to relay each other's packets exposes them to a wide range of security attacks. A particularly devastating attack is the wormhole attack, where a malicious node records control traffic at one location and tunnels it to another compromised node, possibly far away, which replays it locally. Routing security in ad hoc networks is often equated with strong and feasible node authentication and lightweight cryptography. Unfortunately, the wormhole attack can hardly be defeated by crypto graphical measures, as wormhole attackers do not create separate packets. They simply replay packets already existing on the network, which pass the cryptographic checks. Existing works on wormhole detection have often focused on detection using specialized hardware, such as directional antennas, etc. In this paper, we present a cluster based counter-measure for the wormhole attack, that alleviates these drawbacks and efficiently mitigates the wormhole attack in MANET. Simulation results on MATLab exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in detecting wormhole attacks.

Abstract:The popularity of wireless sensor networks for establishing different communication systems is increasing daily. A wireless network consists of sensors prone to various security threats. These sensor nodes make a wireless network vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks. One of them is a wormhole attack that uses a low latency link between two malicious sensor nodes and affects the routing paths of the entire network. This attack is brutal as it is resistant to many cryptographic schemes and hard to observe within the network. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the subject of the detection and mitigation of wormhole attacks in wireless sensor networks. The existing surveys are also explored to find gaps in the literature. Several existing schemes based on different methods are also evaluated critically in terms of throughput, detection rate, low energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, and end-to-end delay. As artificial intelligence and machine learning have massive potential for the efficient management of sensor networks, this paper provides AI- and ML-based schemes as optimal solutions for the identified state-of-the-art problems in wormhole attack detection. As per the author's knowledge, this is the first in-depth review of AI- and ML-based techniques in wireless sensor networks for wormhole attack detection. Finally, our paper explored the open research challenges for detecting and mitigating wormhole attacks in wireless networks.

Detecting Wormhole Attacks in 3D Wireless Ad Hoc Networks Via 3D Forbidden Substructures

Abstract:A wormhole in wireless ad hoc networks is a physically low-latency link that connects two topologically distant nodes. Thereby, an adversary can launch the wormhole attack by tunnelling recorded packets from one node to the other and retransmitting them in the network. Since the wormhole attack is independent of MAC layer protocols and immune to cryptographic techniques, it has been one of the most dangerous security threats to wireless ad hoc networks. At present, efficient algorithms have been applied to 2D networks to detect wormhole attacks by seeking for forbidden substructures. However, when we employ their defined forbidden substructures to detect wormhole attacks in 3D networks (which are more pervasive in reality), we encounter severe obstacles. Through an in-depth examination, we discover the existence of efficient 3D forbidden substructures by introducing maximum independent sets (MaxIS) into the network. Essentially different from 2D forbidden substructures, 3D forbidden substructures can hardly be intuitively perceived. Driven by above understandings, we design a MaxIS-based wormhole detection algorithm for 3D networks using only connectivity information. Furthermore, we conduct thorough theoretical analyses and illustrate that our algorithm is able to detect almost 100% wormhole attacks even in a wireless network with very poor connectivity.

Abstract:Wireless networks are built upon a shared medium that makes it easy for adversaries to launch denial of service (DoS) attacks. One form of denial of service is targeted at preventing sources from communicating. These attacks can be easily accomplished by an adversary by either bypassing MAC-layer protocols, or emitting a radio signal targeted at jamming a particular channel. In this paper we present two strategies that may be employed by wireless devices to evade a MAC/PHY-layer jamming-style wireless denial of service attack. The first strategy, channel surfing, is a form of spectral evasion that involves legitimate wireless devices changing the channel that they are operating on. The second strategy, spatial retreats, is a form of spatial evasion whereby legitimate mobile devices move away from the locality of the DoS emitter. We study both of these strategies for three broad wireless communication scenarios: two-party radio communication, an infrastructured wireless network, and an ad hoc wireless network. We evaluate several of our proposed strategies and protocols through ns-2 simulations and experiments on the Berkeley mote platform.

Abstract:Network coding has been shown to be an effective approach to improve the wireless system performance. However, many security issues impede its wide deployment in practice. Besides the well-studied pollution attacks, there is another severe threat, that of wormhole attacks, which undermines the performance gain of network coding. Since the underlying characteristics of network coding systems are distinctly different from traditional wireless networks, the impact of wormhole attacks and countermeasures are generally unknown. In this paper, we quantify wormholes' devastating harmful impact on network coding system performance through experiments. We first propose a centralized algorithm to detect wormholes and show its correctness rigorously. For the distributed wireless network, we propose DAWN, a Distributed detection Algorithm against Wormhole in wireless Network coding systems, by exploring the change of the flow directions of the innovative packets caused by wormholes. We rigorously prove that DAWN guarantees a good lower bound of successful detection rate. We perform analysis on the resistance of DAWN against collusion attacks. We find that the robustness depends on the node density in the network, and prove a necessary condition to achieve collusion-resistance. DAWN does not rely on any location information, global synchronization assumptions or special hardware/middleware. It is only based on the local information that can be obtained from regular network coding protocols, and thus the overhead of our algorithms is tolerable. Extensive experimental results have verified the effectiveness and the efficiency of DAWN.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are ubiquitous and pervasive, and therefore; highly susceptible to a number of security attacks. Denial of Service (DoS) attack is considered the most dominant and a major threat to WSNs. Moreover, the wormhole attack represents one of the potential forms of the Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Besides, crafting the wormhole attack is comparatively simple; though, its detection is nontrivial. On the contrary, the extant wormhole defense methods need both specialized hardware and strong assumptions to defend against static and dynamic wormhole attack. The ensuing paper introduces a novel scheme to detect wormhole attacks in a geographic routing protocol (DWGRP). The main contribution of this paper is to detect malicious nodes and select the best and the most reliable neighbors based on pairwise key pre-distribution technique and the beacon packet. Moreover, this novel technique is not subject to any specific assumption, requirement, or specialized hardware, such as a precise synchronized clock. The proposed detection method is validated by comparisons with several related techniques in the literature, such as Received Signal Strength (RSS), Authentication of Nodes Scheme (ANS), Wormhole Detection uses Hound Packet (WHOP), and Wormhole Detection with Neighborhood Information (WDI) using the NS-2 simulator. The analysis of the simulations shows promising results with low False Detection Rate (FDR) in the geographic routing protocols.

Abstract:Currently, several researches have concentrated on the new or vital security requirements of mobile commerce. However, some recent studies asserted a particular serious attack, called wormhole attack, that mainly targeting in a wireless-based system may also occur in the mobile commerce systems. Although there are many endeavors to confront wormhole attacks in the field of wireless communications, the solutions still have respective problems to be overcome and are not yet tailor-made for mobile commerce environment. This paper is the first one to unveil the emergence of wormhole attacks in mobile commerce and also proposes the precautionary method to prevent them. On the other hand, considering that the mobile device with limited resource, we utilize the secure filter to efficiently manage group key. Moreover, the proposed secure routing scheme is not only more efficient and robust than that in Ariadne but also resolve the new problem of Ariadne (insider attack) that is demonstrated by Acs et al.
A Wormhole Attack Detection Algorithm Integrated With the Node Trust Optimization Model in WSNs

Abstract:The openness of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) layout makes them vulnerable to attacks. One of the most threatening attacks is the wormhole attack. The wormhole attack is difficult to be detected since it causes false routing by private tunnels and damages to WSNs in data transmission. Therefore, in order to resist wormhole attacks and improve network performance, this paper proposes a detection algorithm integrated with the node trust optimization model (NTOM-DA) against wormholes in WSNs. First, add the node whose number of neighbors exceeds the threshold to the list of suspicious nodes, and then the exclusive neighbors of suspicious nodes communicate with each other. Mark the path whose hops exceed the wormhole threshold as the path to be tested. Establish a trust model to calculate the node trust and evaluate the path trust. The simulation results show that NTOM-DA is superior in detecting wormhole attacks. Even in the face of a network with high node density and high attack degree, it still has a high detection rate and a low false-positive rate, which effectively guarantees the safe and reliable operation of WSNs.

Abstract:In Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), securable data transmission is one of the most challenges. During the transmission between the source and a destination node, routing information of the particular path may be misbehaved by the particular nodes which are known as wormhole nodes/attackers. The paths which include the wormhole nodes are known as wormhole attacked paths. For improving security in WSN, these wormhole attacked paths should be identified. To achieve this, wormhole attack detection method and optimal or secure path selection are presented in this paper. Initially, 'K' paths or multiple paths are generated between source and destination using Ad-hoc On demand Multipath Distance Vector (AOMDV) routing protocol. Then, the source node identifies the wormhole attacked path by verifying the Detection Packet (DP) and Feedback Packet (FP) from the destination. After detecting the wormhole attacked paths, the source node selects the optimal path among the attacker free paths using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed approach improves energy efficiency and network lifetime of the network.

Abstract:Wormhole attacks can negatively affect the localization in wireless sensor networks. A typical wormhole attack can be launched by two colluding attackers, one of which sniffs packets at one point in the network and tunnels them through a wired or wireless link to another point, and the other relays them within its vicinity. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the wormhole attack on the localization and propose a novel distance-consistency-based secure localization scheme against wormhole attacks, which includes three phases of wormhole attack detection, valid locators identification and self-localization. The theoretical model is further formulated to analyze the proposed secure localization scheme. The simulation results validate the theoretical results and also demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

Abstract:While the millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is robust against the conventional wiretapping attack due to its short transmission range and directivity, this paper proposes a new opportunistic wiretapping and jamming (OWJ) attack model in mmWave wireless networks. With OWJ, an eavesdropper can opportunistically conduct wiretapping or jamming to initiate a more hazardous attack based on the instantaneous costs of wiretapping and jamming. We also provide three realizations of the OWJ attack, which are mainly determined by the cost models relevant to distance, path loss and received power, respectively. To understand the impact of the new attack on mmWave network security, we first develop novel approximation techniques to characterize the irregular distributions of wiretappers, jammers and interferers under three OWJ realizations. With the help of the results of node distributions, we then derive analytical expressions for the secrecy transmission capacity to depict the network security performance under OWJ. Finally, we provide extensive numerical results to illustrate the effect of OWJ and to demonstrate that the new attack can more significantly degrade the network security performance than the pure wiretapping or jamming attack.

Abstract:This paper introduces a systematic and novel mechanism for devising a security attack in the WCN (Wireless Communication Network). The proposed model involves the implementation of the AD (Artificial Dust) by the intruder, followed by the execution of the HD (Half-Duplex) attack. The communication network is based on the deployment of urban and rural scenarios with an unknown CSI (Channel State Information). Depending on the achieved path loss based on the distance of the user from the BS, the user with the highest path loss is particularized for the attack. The formulation of AD divulges the increased susceptibilities of the secure network specifically for the selected legitimate user. The parameter of visibility defines the amount of AD present in the communication channel. Based on the enumerated attenuation created by the artificial dust, the parameter of secrecy rate is evaluated with varying distance of the user from the BS and the operating frequency. Furthermore, the proposed scheme of the HD attack is initiated by the intruder at the specified valid user. The strategy of the attack focuses on the continuous monitor of the uplink and attempts the spoofing attack on the downlink wherein the allocation of the resources takes place. The efficacy of the proposed approach is corroborated through the examination of simulation results. The assessment of the proposed mechanism highlights notable characteristics as compared to the conventional methodology of the FD (Full- Duplex) attack.
