Abstract:By using the Hugoniot curve in detonics as a Riemann invariant of a velocity-pressure model, we get a conservative hyperbolic system similar to the Euler equations. The only differences are the larger value of the adiabatic constant (= 8.678 instead of 1.4 for gas dynamics) and the mass density replaced by a strain density depending on the pressure. The model is not homogeneous since it involves a gravity and a friction term. After the seismic wave reaches up the bottom of the ocean, one gets a pressure wave propagating toward the surface, which is made of a frontal shock wave followed by a regular decreasing profile. Since this regular profile propagates faster than the frontal shock waves, the amplitude of the pressure wave is strongly reduced when reaching the surface. Only in the case of a strong earth tremor the residual pressure wave is still sufficient to generate a water elevation with a sufficient wavelengths enable to propagate as a SaintVenant water wave and to become a tsunami when reaching the shore. We describe the construction of the model and the computation of the wave profile and discuss about the formation or not of a wave.

A numerical model preserving nontrivial steady-state solutions for predicting waves run-up on coastal areas

Abstract:In this study, a numerical model preserving a class of nontrivial steady-state solutions is proposed to predict waves propagation and waves run-up on coastal zones. The numerical model is based on the Saint-Venant system with source terms due to variable bottom topography and bed friction effects. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using a Godunov-type finite volume method on unstructured triangular grids. A special piecewise linear reconstruction of the solution is implemented with a correction technique to ensure the accuracy of the method and the positivity of the computed water depth. Efficient semi-implicit techniques for the friction terms and a well-balanced formulation for the bottom topography are used to exactly preserve stationary steady-state s solutions. Moreover, we prove that the numerical scheme preserves a class of nontrivial steady-state solutions. To validate the proposed numerical model against experiments, we first demonstrate its ability to preserve nontrivial steady-state solutions and then we model several laboratory experiments for the prediction of waves run-up on sloping beaches. The numerical simulations are in good agreement with laboratory experiments which confirms the robustness and accuracy of the proposed numerical model in predicting waves propagation on coastal areas.

Abstract:The derivation of shallow water models from Navier-Stokes equations is revisited yielding a class of two-layer shallow water <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://models.An" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> improved velocity profile is proposed, based on the superposition of an ideal fluid and a viscous layer inspired by the Interactive Boundary Layer interaction used in aeronautics. This leads to a new friction law which depends not only on velocity and depth but of the variations of velocity and thickness of boundary layer. The resulting system is an extended shallow water model consisting of three depth-integrated equations: the first two are mass and momentum conservation in which a slight correction on hydrostatic pressure has been made; the third one, known as von Karman equation, describes the evolution of the viscous layer. This coupled model is shown to be conditionally hyperbolic, and a Godunov-type finite volume scheme is also proposed. Several numerical examples are provided and compared to the "Multi-Layer Saint-Venant" model. They emphasize the ability of the model to deal with unsteady viscous effects. They illustrate also the phase-lag between friction and topography, and even recover possible reverse flows.

Abstract:Ocean rogue waves are large and suddenly appearing surface gravity waves, which may cause severe damage to ships and other maritime structures. Despite years of research, the exact origin of rogue waves is still disputed. Linear interference of waves with random phase has often been cited as one possible explanation, but apparently does not satisfactorily explain the probability of extreme events in the ocean. Other explanations therefore suggested a decisive role of a nonlinearity in the system. Here we show that linear interference of a finite and variable number of waves may very well explain the heavy tail in the wave height distribution. Our model can explain all prototypical ocean rogue waves reported so far, including the "three sisters" as well as rogue holes. We further suggest nonlinear time series analysis for estimation of the characteristic number of interfering waves for a given sea state. If ocean dynamics is ruled by interference of less than ten waves, rogue waves cannot appear as a matter of principle. In contrast, for larger numbers, their appearance is much more likely than predicted by parameterless models or longterm observation. The pronounced threshold behavior of our model enables effective forecasting of extreme ocean waves.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a stochastic nonlinear formulation of classical coastal waves models under location uncertainty (LU). In the formal setting investigated here, stochastic versions of the Serre-Green- Nagdi, Boussinesq and classical shallow water wave models are obtained through an asymptotic expansion, which is similar to the one operated in the deterministic setting. However, modified advection terms emerge, together with advection noise terms. These terms are well-known features arising from the LU formalism, based on momentum conservation principle.

Abstract:A statistical theory of rogue waves is proposed and tested against experimental data collected in a long water tank where random waves with different degrees of nonlinearity are mechanically generated and free to propagate along the flume. Strong evidence is given that the rogue waves observed in the tank are hydrodynamic instantons, that is, saddle point configurations of the action associated with the stochastic model of the wave system. As shown here, these hydrodynamic instantons are complex spatio-temporal wave field configurations, which can be defined using the mathematical framework of Large Deviation Theory and calculated via tailored numerical methods. These results indicate that the instantons describe equally well rogue waves that originate from a simple linear superposition mechanism (in weakly nonlinear conditions) or from a nonlinear focusing one (in strongly nonlinear conditions), paving the way for the development of a unified explanation to rogue wave formation.

Abstract:We propose a new conceptual framework for the prediction of rogue waves and third-order space-time extremes of wind seas that relies on the Tayfun (1980) and Janssen (2009) models coupled with Adler-Taylor (2009) theory on the Euler characteristics of random fields. Extreme statistics of the Andrea rogue wave event are examined capitalizing on European Reanalysis (ERA)-interim data. A refinement of Janssen's (2003) theory suggests that in realistic oceanic seas characterized by short-crested multidirectional waves, homogeneous and Gaussian initial conditions become irrelevant as the wave field adjusts to a non-Gaussian state dominated by bound nonlinearities over time scales $t\gg t_{c}\approx0.13T_{0}/\nu\sigma_{\theta}$, where $T_{0}$, $\nu$ and $\sigma_{\theta}$ denote mean wave period, spectral bandwidth and angular spreading of dominant waves. For the Andrea storm, ERA-interim predictions yield $t_{c}/T_{0}\sim O(1)$ indicating that quasi-resonant interactions are negligible. Further, the mean maximum sea surface height expected over the Ekofisk platform's area is higher than that expected at a fixed point. However, both of these statistics underestimate the actual crest height $h_{obs}\sim1.63H_s$ observed at a point near the Ekofisk site, where $H_s$ is the significant wave height. To explain the nature of such extreme, we account for both skewness and kurtosis effects and consider the threshold $h_{q}$ exceeded with probability $q$ by the maximum surface height of a sea state over an area in time. We find that $h_{obs}$ nearly coincides with the threshold $h_{1/1000}\sim1.62H_s$ estimated at a point for a typical $3$-hour sea state, suggesting that the Andrea rogue wave is likely to be a rare occurrence in quasi-Gaussian seas.

Abstract:Rogue waves are fascinating large amplitude coherent structures that abruptly appear and then disappear soon after. In certain partial differential equations these waves are modeled by rational solutions. In this work we discuss approximating rogue wave solutions in a basis of orthogonal functions known as the Malmquist-Takenaka (MT) functions. This family of rational functions can be directly mapped to a modified Fourier series, allowing the fast Fourier transform computation of the spectral MT coefficients. Spectral differentiation matrices are derived. The approximation of the various rogue wave solutions in the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation is explored. The unstable nature of the NLS equation on a constant background and its effect on destabilizing and generating rogue waves is studied. Perturbing the constant solution with certain localized functions is found to generate rogue wave-like structures.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the wave solutions of a stochastic rotating shallow water model. This approximate model provides an interesting simple description of the interplay between waves and random forcing ensuing either from the wind or coming as the feedback of the ocean on the atmosphere and leading in a very fast way to the selection of some wavelength. This interwoven, yet simple, mechanism explains the emergence of typical wavelength associated to near inertial waves. Ensemble-mean waves that are not in phase with the random forcing are damped at an exponential rate, whose magnitude depends on the random forcing variance. Geostrophic adjustment is also interpreted as a statistical homogenization process in which, in order to conserve potential vorticity, the small-scale component tends to align to the velocity fields to form a statistically homogeneous random field.

Saturation of rogue wave amplification over steep shoals

Abstract:Shoaling surface gravity waves induce rogue wave formation. Though commonly reduced to water waves passing over a step, nonequilibrium physics allows finite slopes to be considered in this problem. Using nonhomogeneous spectral analysis of a spatially varying energy density ratio, we describe the dependence of the amplification as a function of the slope steepness. Increasing the slope increases the amplification of rogue wave probability until this amplification saturates at steep slopes. In contrast, the increase of the down slope of a subsequent de-shoal zone leads to a monotonic decrease in the rogue wave probability, thus featuring a strong asymmetry between shoaling and de-shoaling zones. Due to the saturation of the rogue wave amplification at steep slopes, our model is applicable beyond its range of validity up to a step, thus elucidating why previous models based on a step could describe the physics of steep finite slopes. Abstract:Rogue waves are associated with various ocean processes, both at the coast and in the open ocean. In either zone, inhomogeneities in the wave field caused by shoaling, crossing seas or current interactions disturb wave statistics, increasing rogue wave probability and magnitude. Such amplification of the frequency of rogue waves and their intensity, i.e. the maximum normalized height, have been attested in numerical simulations and laboratory studies, in particular for wave-current interactions. In this study, we investigate the effect of the current intensity and direction on rogue wave probability, by analyzing long-term observations from the southern North Sea. We observe that the amplification is similar for opposing and following currents. Despite the sea states being dominantly broad-banded and featuring a large directional spread, anomalous statistics are of the same order of magnitude as those observed in unidirectional laboratory experiments for stationary currents.

Abstract:In this paper, the generalized Darboux transformation is established to the AB system, which mainly describes marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optics. We find a unified formula of Nth-order rogue wave solution for the AB system by the direct iterative rule. In particular, rogue waves possessing several free parameters from first to second order are calculated. The dynamics and some interesting structures of the rogue waves are illustrated through some figures.

Abstract:Rogue waves are extreme and rare fluctuations of the wave field that have been discussed in many physical systems. Their presence substantially influences the statistical properties of a partially coherent wave field, i.e., a wave field characterized by a finite band spectrum with random Fourier phases. Their understanding is fundamental for the design of ships and offshore platforms. In many meteorological conditions waves in the ocean are characterized by the so-called Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) spectrum. Here we compare two unique experimental results: the first one has been performed in a 270 m wave tank and the other in optical fibers. In both cases, waves characterized by a JONSWAP spectrum and random Fourier phases have been launched at the input of the experimental device. The quantitative comparison, based on an appropriate scaling of the two experiments, shows a very good agreement between the statistics in hydrodynamics and optics. Spontaneous emergence of heavy tails in the probability density function of the wave amplitude is observed in both systems. The results demonstrate the universal features of rogue waves and provide a fundamental and explicit bridge between two important fields of research. Numerical simulations are also compared with experimental results.

Abstract:We introduce a novel family of analytic solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction equations to the purpose of modeling unique events, i.e. "amplitude peaks" which are isolated in space and time. The description of these solutions is likely to be a crucial step in the understanding and forecasting of rogue-waves in a variety of multi-component wave dynamics, from oceanography to optics, from plasma physics to acoustics.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the rogue wave patterns in the coupled Fokas-Lenells equation by using the Darboux transformation. We demonstrate that when one of the internal parameters is large enough, the general high-order rogue wave solutions generated at a branch point of multiplicity three can be decomposed into some first-order outer rogue waves and a lower-order inner rogue wave. Remarkably, the positions and the orders of these outer and inner rogue waves are intimately related to Okamoto polynomial hierarchies.

Abstract:A prototypical example of a rogue wave structure in a two-dimensional model is presented in the context of the Davey-Stewartson II (DS II) equation arising in water waves. The analytical methodology involves a Taylor expansion of an eigenfunctionof the model's Lax pair which is used to form a hierarchy of infinitely many new eigenfunctions. These are used for the construction of two-dimensional (2D) rogue waves (RWs) of the DS II equation by the even-fold Darboux transformation (DT). The obtained 2D RWs, which are localized in both space and time, can be viewed as a 2D analogue of the Peregrine soliton and are thus natural candidates to describe oceanic RW phenomena,as well as ones in 2D fluid systems and water tanks.

Abstract:Nonlinear instability and refraction by ocean currents are both important mechanisms that go beyond the Rayleigh approximation and may be responsible for the formation of freak waves. In this paper, we quantitatively study nonlinear effects on the evolution of surface gravity waves on the ocean, to explore systematically the effects of various input parameters on the probability of freak wave formation. The fourth-order current-modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation (CNLS4) is employed to describe the wave evolution. By solving CNLS4 numerically, we are able to obtain quantitative predictions for the wave height distribution as a function of key environmental conditions such as average steepness, angular spread, and frequency spread of the local sea state. Additionally, we explore the spatial dependence of the wave height distribution, associated with the buildup of nonlinear development.

Abstract:In this essay we give an overview on the problem of rogue or freak wave formation in the ocean. The matter of the phenomenon is a sporadic occurrence of unexpectedly high waves on the sea surface. These waves cause serious danger for sailing and sea use. A number of huge wave accidents, resulting in damages, ship losses and people injuries and deaths, are known. Now marine researchers do believe that these waves belong to a specific kind of sea wave, not taken into account by conventional models for sea wind waves. This paper addresses the nature of the rogue wave problem from a general viewpoint based on wave process ideas. We start by introducing some primitive elements of sea wave physics with the purpose of paving the way for further discussion. We discuss linear physical mechanisms which are responsible for high wave formation, at first. Then, we proceed with a description of different sea conditions, starting from the open deep sea, and approaching the sea coast. Nonlinear effects which are able to cause rogue waves are emphasised. In conclusion we briefly discuss the generality of the physical mechanisms suggested for the rogue wave explanation; they are valid for rogue wave phenomena in other media such as solid matters, superconductors, plasmas and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:The reef-lagoon-channel system is very typical on the low-lying reef-lined coasts in tropical and subtropical areas. Comparing to the well-studied one-dimensional horizontal (1DH) fringing reefs, little is known about the alongshore wave runup variation and its implication for coastal flooding in such a two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) reef configuration. To better understand the wave processes in an idealized reef-lagoon-channel system, a numerical model is presented in this study, which is based on a set of fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations. Wave breaking is addressed by a shock-capturing scheme and bottom friction is formulated by the Manning frictional law. The adopted model is first validated by a published laboratory dataset in view of wave spectrum, wave height, wave setup, mean current as well as wave runup on the back-reef beach. Subsequently, the effects of hydrodynamic (incident wave height, incident wave period, reef-flat wave level) and reef morphological (forereef slope, cross-shore reef-flat width, channel width and frictional coefficient) parameters that are not fully considered by the laboratory experiments are investigated through the numerical simulations. Finally, the model is used to analyze the infragravity (IG) wave resonant modes in the system, and the effects of channel on such modes are also demonstrated.
