Abstract:In this note we deduce well known modular identities for Jacobi theta functions using the spectral representations associated with the real valued Brownian motion taking values on $[-1,+1]$. We consider two cases: (i) reflection at $-1$ and $+1$, (ii) killing at $-1$ and $+1$. It is seen that these two representations give, in a sense, most compact forms of the modular theta-function identities. We study also discrete Gaussian distributions generated by theta functions, and derive, in particular, addition formulas for discrete Gaussian variables.

Abstract:The rationality of the elliptic Gauss sum coefficient is shown. The following is a specific case of our argument. Let f(u)=sl((1-i)\varpi u), where sl() is the Gauss' lemniscatic sine and \varpi=2.62205... is the real period of the elliptic curve y^2=x^3-x, so that f(u) is an elliptic function relative to the period lattice Z[i]. Let \pi be a primary prime of Z[i] such that norm(\pi)\equiv 13\mod 16. Let S be the quarter set mod \pi consisting of quartic residues. Let us define G(\pi):=\sum_{\nu\in S} f(\nu/\pi) and \tilde{\pi}:=\prod_{\nu\in S} f(\nu/\pi). The former G(\pi) is a typical example of elliptic Gauss sum; the latter is regarded as a canonical 4-th root of -\pi: (\tilde{\pi})^4=-\pi. Then we have Theorem: G(\pi)/(\tilde{\pi})^3 is a rational odd integer. G(\pi) appears naturally in the central value of Hecke L associated to the quartic residue character mod \pi, and our proof is based on the functional equation of L and an explicit formula of the root number. In fact, the latter is nothing but the Cassels-Matthews formula on the quartic Gauss sum.

Abstract:For motives associated with Fermat curves, there are elements in motivic cohomology whose regulators are written in terms of special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. Using them, we verify the Beilinson conjecture numerically for some cases and find formulae for the values of L-functions at 0. These appear analogous to the Chowla-Selberg formula for the periods of elliptic curves with complex multiplication, which are related with the L-values at 1 by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.

Abstract:We examine the moduli space E=T* of complex tori T(t)=C/L(t) where L(t)=cost.n(t)Lt. We find that the Dedekind eta function furnishes a bridge between the euclidean and hyperbolic structures on T*=C-L/L as well as between the doubly periodic Weierstrass function p on T* and the theta function for the lattice E(8). The former one allows us to rewrite the Lame equation for the Bers embedding of T(1,1) in a new form. We show that L has natural decomposition into 8 sublattices (each equivalent to L) together with appropriate half-points and that this leads to some local functions and to a relation with E(8)

Abstract:One way of defining the values of the modular j ‐function at real quadratic irrationalities is by its cycle integrals along geodesics in the upper half plane whose endpoints are the roots of an indefinite binary quadratic form. We show that the restriction of the modular j ‐function to Markov irrationalities (an important subset of real quadratic irrationalities in diophantine approximation) is continuous with respect to the topology induced by the euclidean norm.

Abstract:We consider a special family of Gaussian hypergeometric functions whose entries are cubic and trivial characters over finite fields. The special values of these functions are known to give the Frobenius traces of families of Hessian elliptic curves. Using the theory of harmonic Maass forms and mock modular forms, we prove that the limiting distribution of these values is semi-circular (i.e. $SU(2)$), confirming the usual Sato-Tate distribution in this setting.

Abstract:The Fourier coefficients $c_1(n)$ of the elliptic modular $j$-function are always even for $n \not\equiv 7 \pmod{8}$. In contrast, for $n \equiv 7 \pmod{8}$, it is conjectured that ``half" of the coefficients take odd values. In this article, we first observe in detail when $c_1(8n-1)$ is odd and show that the coefficients share the same parity as the coefficients $c_{\mu_2}(n)$ of the 2nd order mock theta function $\mu_2(q)$. Furthermore, we prove that this phenomenon also holds among several hauptmoduln and between hauptmoduln and even-order mock theta functions.

Abstract:For quadratic curves over $F_p$, the number of solutions, which is governed by an analogue of the Mordell-Weil group, is expressed with the Legendre symbol of a coefficient of quadratic curves. Focusing on the number of solutions, a quadratic curve analogue of the modular form in the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is proposed. This modular form yields the Gaussian sum and also possesses some modular transformation structure.

Abstract:Let $\lambda$ be a self-dual Hecke character over an imaginary quadratic field $K$ of infinity type $(1,0)$. Let $\ell$ and $p$ be primes which are coprime to $6N_{K/\mathbb{Q}}({\mathrm cond}(\lambda))$. We determine the $\ell$-adic valuation of Hecke $L$-values $L(1,\lambda\chi)/\Omega_K$ as $\chi$ varies over $p$-power order anticyclotomic characters over $K$. As an application, for $p$ inert in $K$, we prove the vanishing of the $\mu$-invariant of Rubin's $p$-adic $L$-function, leading to the first results on the $\mu$-invariant of imaginary quadratic fields at non-split primes. Our approach and results complement the work of Hida and Finis. The approach is rooted in the arithmetic of a CM form on a definite Shimura set.The application to Rubin's $p$-adic $L$-function also relies on the proof of his conjecture. Along the way, we present an automorphic view on Rubin's theory.

Abstract:By a formula of Villegas, the Mahler measures of $P_k(x,y)=x+1/x+y+1/y+k$ can be written as a Kronecker-Eisenstein series, where $k=\frac{4}{\sqrt{\lambda(2\tau)}}$ and $\lambda(\tau)=16\frac{\eta(\tau/2)^8\eta(2\tau)^{16}}{\eta(\tau)^{24}}$ is the modular lambda-function. If $\tau$ is taken to be CM points, we can use Villegas's formula to express the Mahler measures of $P_k$ as $L$-values of some modular forms. We prove that if $\tau_0$ is a CM point, then $\lambda(2\tau_0)$ is an algebraic number whose degree can be bounded by the product of the class numbers of $D_{\tau_0}$ and $D_{4\tau_0}$, where $D_{\tau}$ stands for the discriminant of a CM point $\tau$. Then we use the CM points with class numbers $\leqslant 2$ to obtain identities linking the Mahler measures of $P_k$ to $L$-values of modular forms. We get 35 identities, 5 of which are proven results, the others do not seem to appear in the literature. We also verify some cases of Beilinson's conjecture for elliptic curves over real quadratic fields that related to our discovery. Our method might also be used to other polynomial familys that mentioned in Villegas's paper.
On some values which do not belong to the image of Ramanujan's tau-function

Abstract:Lehmer conjectured that Ramanujan's tau function never vanishes. As a variation of this conjecture, it is proved that \begin{equation*} \tau(n)\neq \pm \ell, \pm 2\ell, \pm 2\ell^2, \end{equation*} where $\ell<100$ is an odd prime, by Balakrishnan, Ono, Craig, Tsai and many people. We have proved that \begin{equation*} \tau(n)\neq \pm \ell, \pm 2\ell, \pm 4\ell, \pm 8\ell \end{equation*} for any $n\geq 1$ except 14 cases, where $\ell<1000$ is an odd prime.

Transcendence of ${}_3F_2(1)$ Hypergeometric Series and $L$-values of Modular Forms

Abstract:We examine the families of hypergeometric series associated to a special class of modular hypergeometric Galois representations recently studied by Allen, Grove, Long, and Tu. The underlying motives allow us to express a special $L$-value of the corresponding modular form in terms of these hypergeometric series. We use extra symmetries coming from the underlying modular forms to study the transcendence of families of periods, which have the form ${}_3F_2(1)$, on hypergeometric surfaces. For several hypergeometric surfaces with four periods, we show that the vector space generated by these elements has dimension at most 2. As an application of our results, we utilize a classical formula of ${}_3F_2(1)$ series due to Kummer to find relations between $L$-values of modular forms that differ by an even twist, as predicted in a theorem of Shimura.

The "exponential" torsion of superelliptic Jacobians

Abstract:Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a superelliptic curve defined by the equation $y^{\ell} = f(x)$, where $f$ is a separable polynomial of degree non-divisible by $\ell$. In this article we study the "exponential" (i.e. $\ell$-power) torsion of $J$. In particular, under some mild conditions on the polynomial $f$, we determine the image of the associated $\ell$-adic representation up to the determinant. We show also that the image of the determinant is contained in an explicit $\mathbb Z_{\ell}$-lattice with a finite index. As an application, we prove the Hodge, Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for a generic superelliptic Jacobian of the above type.

Abstract:Elsner, Luca and Tachiya proved in [4] that the values of the Jacobi-theta constants and are algebraically independent over for distinct integers , under some conditions on . On the other hand, in [3] Elsner and Tachiya also proved that three values and are algebraically dependent over . In this article we prove the non-vanishing of linear forms in , and under various conditions on , , , and . Among other things we prove that for odd and distinct positive integers the three numbers , and are linearly independent over when is an algebraic number of some degree greater or equal to 3. In some sense this fills the gap between the above-mentioned former results on theta constants. A theorem on the linear independence over of the functions for distinct positive rational numbers is also established.

Abstract:We continue a program of investigating the parity of the coefficients of eta-quotients, with the goal of elucidating the parity of the partition function. In this paper, we consider positive integer powers $t$ of the Dedekind eta-function. Previous work and conjectures suggest that arithmetic progressions in which the Fourier coefficients of these functions are even should be numerous. We explicitly identify infinite classes of such progressions modulo prime squares for several values of $t$, and we offer two broad conjectures concerning their existence in general.

Abstract:Under relatively mild and natural conditions, we establish an integral period relations for the (real or imaginary) quadratic base change of an elliptic cusp form. This answers a conjecture of Hida regarding the {\it congruence number} controlling the congruences between this base change and other eigenforms which are not base change. As a corollary, we establish the Bloch-Kato conjecture for adjoint modular Galois representations twisted by an even quadratic character. In the odd case, we formulate a conjecture linking the degree two topological period attached to the base change Bianchi modular form, the cotangent complex of the corresponding Hecke algebra and the archimedean regulator attached to some Beilinson-Flach element.

Abstract:For physicists: For supersymmetric quantum mechanics, there are cases when a mod-2 Witten index can be defined, even when a more ordinary $\mathbb{Z}$-valued Witten index vanishes. Similarly, for 2d supersymmetric quantum field theories, there are cases when a mod-2 elliptic genus can be defined, even when a more ordinary elliptic genus vanishes. We study such mod-2 elliptic genera in the context of $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ supersymmetry, and show that they are characterized by mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms, under some assumptions. For mathematicians: We study the image of the standard homomorphism $\pi_n \mathrm{TMF}\to \pi_n \mathrm{KO}((q))\simeq \mathbb{Z}/2((q))$ for $n=8k+1$ or $8k+2$, by relating them to the mod-2 reductions of integral modular forms.

Determinants of Mahler measures and special values of $L$-functions

Abstract:We consider Mahler measures of two well-studied families of bivariate polynomials, namely $P_t=x+x^{-1}+y+y^{-1}+\sqrt{t}$ and $Q_t=x^3+y^3+1-\sqrt[3]{t}xy$, where $t$ is a complex parameter. In the cases when the zero loci of these polynomials define CM elliptic curves over number fields, we derive general formulas for their Mahler measures in terms of $L$-values of cusp forms. For each family, we also classify all possible values of $t$ in number fields of degree not exceeding $4$ for which the corresponding elliptic curves have complex multiplication. Finally, for all such values of $t$ in totally real number fields of degree $n=2$ and $n=4$, corresponding to elliptic curves $\mathcal{F}_t$ (resp. $\mathcal{C}_t$), we prove that determinants of $n\times n$ matrices whose entries are Mahler measures corresponding to their Galois conjugates are non-zero rational multiples of $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{F}_t,0)$ (resp. $L^{(n)}(\mathcal{C}_t,0)$).

Abstract:The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime p=2 to prove non‐vanishing theorems for the value at s=1 of the complex L ‐series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field K=Q(−q) , where q is any prime ≡7mod8 . Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non‐vanishing theorem first proven by Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non‐vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell–Weil group and the Tate–Shafarevich group of the corresponding elliptic curves over the Hilbert class field of K . It is essential for the proofs to study the Iwasawa theory of the higher dimensional abelian variety with complex multiplication which is obtained by taking the restriction of scalars to K of the particular elliptic curve with complex multiplication introduced by Gross.
