Abstract:We report here on the results of numerical searches for PPT states with specified ranks for density matrices and their partial transpose. The study includes several bipartite quantum systems of low dimensions. For a series of ranks extremal PPT states are found. The results are listed in tables and charted in diagrams. Comparison of the results for systems of different dimensions reveal several regularities. We discuss lower and upper bounds on the ranks of extremal PPT states.

Abstract:A deep understanding of quantum entanglement is vital for advancing quantum technologies. The strength of entanglement can be quantified by counting the degrees of freedom that are entangled, which results in a quantity called Schmidt number. A particular challenge is to identify the strength of entanglement in quantum states which remain positive under partial transpose (PPT), otherwise recognized as undistillable states. Finding PPT states with high Schmidt number has become a mathematical and computational challenge. In this work, we introduce efficient analytical tools for calculating the Schmidt number for a class of bipartite states, called generalized grid states. Our methods improve the best known bounds for PPT states with high Schmidt number. Most notably, we construct a Schmidt number three PPT state in five dimensional systems and a family of states with a Schmidt number of $(d+1)/2$ for odd $d$-dimensional systems, representing the best-known scaling of the Schmidt number in a local dimension. Additionally, these states possess intriguing geometrical properties, which we utilize to construct indecomposable entanglement witnesses.

Characterization of Topological States Via Dual Multipartite Entanglement

Abstract:We demonstrate that multipartite entanglement is able to characterize one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological order, which is witnessed by the scaling behavior of the quantum Fisher information of the ground state with respect to the spin operators defined in the dual lattice. We investigate an extended Kitaev chain with a Z symmetry identified equivalently by winding numbers and paired Majorana zero modes at each end. The topological phases with high winding numbers are detected by the scaling coefficient of the quantum Fisher information density with respect to generators in different dual lattices. Containing richer properties and more complex structures than bipartite entanglement, the dual multipartite entanglement of the topological state has promising applications in robust quantum computation and quantum metrology, and can be generalized to identify topological order in the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Abstract:It is known that some two qutrit entangled states of rank 4 with positive partial transpose [PPT] can be built from the unextendible product bases [UPB]. We show that this fact is indeed universal, namely all such states can be constructed from UPB. We also classify the 5-dimensional subspaces of two qutrits which contain only finitely many product states (up to scalar multiple), and in particular those spanned by a UPB.

However, in a high-dimensional (> 6) situation, this criterion is not sufficient. How can we judge whether an entangled state in any high-dimensional quantum system is PPT or not? Here we propose a linear algebra method for checking the positivity of the partial transpose of a state and present a set of entangled mixed states with non-positive partial transpose.

Abstract:On the basis of linear programming, new sets of entanglement witnesses (EWs) for 3x3 and 4x4 systems are constructed. In both cases, the constructed EWs correspond to the hyperplanes contacting, without intersecting, the related feasible regions at line segments and restricted planes respectively. Due to the special property of the contacting area between the hyper-planes and the feasible regions, the corresponding hyper-planes can be turned around the contacting area throughout a bounded interval and hence create an infinite number of EWs. As these EWs are able to detect entanglement of some PPT states, they are non-decomposable (nd-EWs).
Multi-particle entanglement manipulation under positive partial transpose preserving operations

Abstract:We consider the transformation of multi-partite states in the single copy setting under positive-partial-transpose-preserving operations (PPT-operations) and obtain both qualitative and quantitative results. Firstly, for some pure state transformations that are impossible under local operations and classical communication (LOCC), we demonstrate that they become possible with a surprisingly large success probability under PPT-operations. Furthermore, we clarify the convertibility of arbitrary multipartite pure states under PPT-operations, and show that a drastic simplification in the classification of pure state entanglement occurs when the set of operations is switched from LOCC to PPT-operations. Indeed, the infinitely many types of LOCC-incomparable entanglement are reduced to only one type under the action of PPT-operations. This is a clear manifestation of the increased power afforded by the use of PPT-bound entanglement. In addition, we further enlarge the set of operations to clarify the effect of another type of bound entanglement, multipartite unlockable bound entanglement, and show that a further simplification occurs. As compared to pure states a more complicated situation emerges in the mixed state settings. While single copy distillation becomes possible under PPT-operations for some mixed states it remains impossible for other mixed states.

Abstract:It is known that entangled mixed states that are positive under partial transposition (PPT states) must have rank at least four. In a previous paper we presented a classification of rank four entangled PPT states which we believe to be complete. In the present paper we continue our investigations of the low rank entangled PPT states. We use perturbation theory in order to construct rank five entangled PPT states close to the known rank four states, and in order to compute dimensions and study the geometry of surfaces of low rank PPT states. We exploit the close connection between low rank PPT states and product vectors. In particular, we show how to reconstruct a PPT state from a sufficient number of product vectors in its kernel. It may seem surprising that the number of product vectors needed may be smaller than the dimension of the kernel.

Abstract:We experimentally prepare bi-photon mixed states in polarization employing an entangled-classical hybrid photon emitter which can properly model solid-state entangled photon sources with uncorrelated background photons. Polarization-uncorrelated photon pairs in totally mixed (TM) states are embodied with classical thermal radiation, while the polarization-entangled ones in a Bell state are generated by conventional parametric down conversion. The bi-photon states generated from the hybrid photon emitter are characterized in terms of a linear entropy-tangle plane, which reveals the formation of two-qubit Werner states. We also propose a direct way for evaluating the Werner states by means of minimal coincidence counts measurements. This simple method can be widely applicable in examining the bi-photon states from solid-state entangled photon sources, in which the polarization-entangled photon pairs have temporal correlation while the background photons in the TM states do not.

Abstract:Efficiently detecting entanglement based on measurable quantities is a basic problem for quantum information processing. Recently, the measurable quantities called partial-transpose (PT)-moments have been proposed to detect and characterize entanglement. In the recently published paper [L. Zhang \emph{et al.}, \href{<a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.1002/andp.202200289" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a>}{Ann. Phys.(Berlin) \textbf{534}, 2200289 (2022)}], we have already identified the 2-dimensional (2D) region, comprised of the second and third PT-moments, corresponding to two-qubit entangled states, and described the whole region for all two-qubit states. In the present paper, we visualize the 3D region corresponding to all two-qubit states by further involving the fourth PT-moment (the last one for two-qubit states). The characterization of this 3D region can finally be achieved by optimizing some polynomials. Furthermore, we identify the dividing surface which separates the two parts of the whole 3D region corresponding to entangled and separable states respectively. Due to the measurability of PT-moments, we obtain a complete and operational criterion for the detection of two-qubit entanglement.

Abstract:We characterize entanglement subject to its definition over real and complex, composite quantum systems. In particular, a method is established to assess quantum correlations with respect to a selected number system, illuminating the deeply rooted, yet rarely discussed question of why quantum states are described via complex numbers. With our experiment, we then realize two-photon polarization states that are entangled with respect to the notion of two rebits, comprising two two-level systems over real numbers. At the same time, the generated states are separable with respect to two complex qubits. Among other results, we reconstruct the best approximation of the generated states in terms of a real-valued, local expansion and show that this yields an incomplete description of our data. Conversely, the generated states are shown to be fully decomposable in terms of tensor-product states with complex wave functions. Thereby, we probe paradigms of quantum physics with modern theoretical tools and experimental platforms that are relevant for applications in quantum information science and technology and connected to the fundamentals of the quantum description of nature.

Abstract:We study the distinguishability of bipartite quantum states by positive operator-valued measures with positive partial transpose (PPT POVMs). The contributions of this paper include: 1) we give a negative answer to an open problem of showing a limitation of a previous known method for detecting nondistinguishability; 2) we show that a maximally entangled state and its orthogonal complement, no matter how many copies are supplied, cannot be distinguished by the PPT POVMs, even unambiguously. This result is much stronger than the previous known ones; and 3) we study the entanglement cost of distinguishing quantum states. It is proved that root 2/3 vertical bar 00 > + root 1/3 vertical bar 11 > is sufficient and necessary for distinguishing three Bell states by the PPT POVMs. An upper bound of entanglement cost of distinguishing a d circle times d pure state and its orthogonal complement is obtained for separable operations. Based on this bound, we are able to construct two orthogonal quantum states, which cannot be distinguished unambiguously by separable POVMs, but finite copies would make them perfectly distinguishable by local operations and classical communication. We further observe that a two-qubit maximally entangled state is always enough for distinguishing a d circle times d pure state and its orthogonal complement by the PPT POVMs, no matter the value of d. In sharp contrast, an entangled state with Schmidt number at least d is always needed for distinguishing such two states by separable POVMs. As an application, we show that the entanglement cost of distinguishing a d circle times d maximally entangled state and its orthogonal complement must be a maximally entangled state for d = 2, which implies that teleportation is optimal, and in general, it could be chosen as O(log d/d).
Entanglement properties of multipartite informationally complete quantum measurements

Abstract:We analyze tight informationally complete measurements for arbitrarily large multipartite systems and study their configurations of entanglement. We demonstrate that tight measurements cannot be exclusively composed neither of fully separable nor maximally entangled states. We establish an upper bound on the maximal number of fully separable states allowed by tight measurements and investigate the distinguished case, in which every measurement operator carries the same amount of entanglement. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of nested tight measurements, i.e. multipartite tight informationally complete measurements such that every reduction to a certain number of parties induces a lower dimensional tight measurement, proving that they exist for any number of parties and internal levels.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement, a key component in quantum information theory, has attracted significant attention in quantum information processing tasks. Exact characterization of entanglement is essential for understanding and manipulating quantum systems. Recent advancements in this domain have been marked by a study that delves into the characterization of entanglement using partial transpose (PT) moments. In this work (Zhang et al. in Ann Phys (Berlin) 534:2200289, 2022, https://doi.org/10.1002/andp.202200289), researchers delineated a two-dimensional (2D) region using the second and third PT moments, specifically for two-qubit entangled states. This region provides insights into entanglement and moreover identifies the entire 2D space of two-qubit states. In this paper, we further explore another crucial 2D region, incorporating the second and fourth PT moments, for two-qubit entangled states. Additionally, we also determine the complete 2D region for all two-qubit states. This analysis represents one of three 2D projections of a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) region encompassing the second, third, and fourth PT moments. Our extension not only offers additional insights into the entanglement characteristics of two-qubit states but also complements the previous work by providing a complementary perspective on the entanglement of two-qubit states using PT moments.

Abstract:The PT-symmetric non-Hermitian systems have been widely studied and explored both in theory and in experiment due to their various interesting features. In this work we focus on the dynamical features of a triple-qubit system, one of which evolves under a local PT-symmetric Hamiltonian. An abnormal dynamic pattern in the entropy evolution process is identified that presents a parameter-dependent stable state, determined by the non-Hermiticity of Hamiltonian in the broken phase of PT symmetry. The entanglement and mutual information of a two-body subsystem can increase beyond the initial values, which do not exist in the Hermitian and two-qubit PT-symmetric systems. Moreover, an experimental demonstration of the stable states in non-Hermitian systems with nonzero entropy and entanglement is realized on a four-qubit quantum simulator with nuclear spins. Our work reveals the distinctive dynamic features in the triple-qubit PT-symmetric system and paves the way for practical quantum simulation of multiparty non-Hermitian system on quantum computers.
