Abstract:Category theory is the language of homological algebra, allowing us to state broadly applicable theorems and results without needing to specify the details for every instance of analogous objects. However, authors often stray from the realm of pure abstract category theory in their development of the field, leveraging the Freyd-Mitchell embedding theorem or similar results, or otherwise using set-theoretic language to augment a general categorical discussion. This paper seeks to demonstrate that - while it is not necessary for most mathematicians' purposes - a development of homological concepts can be contrived from purely categorical notions. We begin by outlining the categories we will work within, namely Abelian categories (building off additive categories). We continue to develop cohomology groups of sequences, eventually culminating in a development of right derived functors. This paper is designed to be a minimalist construction, supplying no examples or motivation beyond what is necessary to develop the ideas presented.

Abstract:There exists a dispute in philosophy, going back at least to Leibniz, whether is it possible to view the world as a network of relations and relations between relations with the role of objects, between which these relations hold, entirely eliminated. Category theory seems to be the correct mathematical theory for clarifying conceptual possibilities in this respect. In this theory, objects acquire their identity either by definition, when in defining category we postulate the existence of objects, or formally by the existence of identity morphisms. We show that it is perfectly possible to get rid of the identity of objects by definition, but the formal identity of objects remains as an essential element of the theory. This can be achieved by defining category exclusively in terms of morphisms and identity morphisms (objectless, or object free, category) and, analogously, by defining category theory entirely in terms of functors and identity functors (categoryless, or category free, category theory). With objects and categories eliminated, we focus on the "philosophy of arrows" and the roles various identities play in it (identities as such, identities up to isomorphism, identities up to natural isomorphism...). This perspective elucides a contrast between "set ontology" and "categorical ontology".

The only prerequisites are a basic understanding of logic, computability theory, topology, and ordered structures.

Abstract:This brief brochure is intended to present a philosophical theory known as relational materialism. We introduce the postulates and principles of the theory, articulating its ontological and epistemological content using the language of category theory. The identification of any existing entity is primarily characterized by its relational, finite, and non-static nature. Furthermore, we provide a categorical construction of particularities within the relational materialist onto-epistemology. Our objective is to address and transform a specific perspective prevalent in scientific communities into a productive network of philosophical commitments.

Abstract:The generality and pervasiveness of category theory in modern mathematics makes it a frequent and useful target of formalization. It is however quite challenging to formalize, for a variety of reasons. Agda currently (i.e. in 2020) does not have a standard, working formalization of category theory. We document our work on solving this dilemma. The formalization revealed a number of potential design choices, and we present, motivate and explain the ones we picked. In particular, we find that alternative definitions or alternative proofs from those found in standard textbooks can be advantageous, as well as "fit" Agda's type theory more smoothly. Some definitions regarded as equivalent in standard textbooks turn out to make different "universe level" assumptions, with some being more polymorphic than others. We also pay close attention to engineering issues so that the library integrates well with Agda's own standard library, as well as being compatible with as many of supported type theories in Agda as possible.

Abstract:We study the 2‐categories BIon, of (generalized) bounded ionads, and Accω , of accessible categories with directed colimits, as an abstract framework to approach formal model theory. We relate them to topoi and (lex) geometric sketches, which serve as categorical specifications of geometric theories. We provide reconstruction and completeness‐like results. We relate abstract elementary classes to locally decidable topoi. We introduce the notion of categories of saturated objects and relate it to atomic topoi.

Abstract:This paper considers the nature and role of axioms from the point of view of the current debates about the status of category theory and, in particular, in relation to the “algebraic” approach to mathematical structuralism. My aim is to show that category theory has as much to say about an algebraic consideration of meta-mathematical analyses of logical structure as it does about mathematical analyses of mathematical structure, without either requiring an assertory mathematical or meta-mathematical background theory as a “foundation”, or turning meta-mathematical analyses of logical concepts into “philosophical” ones. Thus, we can use category theory to frame an interpretation of mathematics according to which we can be structuralists all the way down.

Categorical Structuralism and the Foundations of Mathematics

Abstract:Structuralism is the view that mathematics is the science of structure. It has been noted that category theory expresses mathematical objects exactly along their structural properties. This has led to a programme of categorical structuralism, integrating structuralist philosophy with insights from category theory for new views on the foundations of mathematics. In this thesis, we begin by by investigating structuralism to note important properties of mathematical structures. An overview of categorical structuralism is given, as well as the associated views on the foundations of mathematics. We analyse the different purposes of mathematical foundations, separating different kinds of foundations, be they ontological, epistemological, or pragmatic in nature. This allows us to respond to both the categorical structuralists and their critics from a neutral perspective. We find that common criticisms with regards to categorical foundations are based on an unnecessary interpretation of mathematical statements. With all this in hand, we can describe “schematic mathematics”, or mathematics from a structuralist perspective informed by the categorical structuralists, employing only certain kinds of foundations.

Abstract:Inspired by Zermelo's quasi-categoricity result characterizing the models of second-order Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory $\text{ZFC}_2$, we investigate when those models are fully categorical, characterized by the addition to $\text{ZFC}_2$ either of a first-order sentence, a first-order theory, a second-order sentence or a second-order theory. Thus we mount an analysis of the categorical large cardinals. This mathematical analysis leads naturally to philosophical issues concerning structuralism and realism, including especially the tension between categoricity and reflection. Ultimately we identify grounds for the preference of noncategoricity in one's foundations.

Abstract:Although it has been a well-known fact, for more than two decades, that category theory is needed for the study of topological orders, it is still a non-trivial challenge for students and working physicists to master the abstract language of category theory. In this work, for those who have no background in category theory, we explain in great details how the structure of a (braided) fusion category naturally emerges from lattice models and physical intuitions. Moreover, we show that nearly all mathematical notions and constructions in fusion categories and its representation theory, such as (monoidal) functors, Drinfeld center, module categories, Morita equivalence, condensation completion and fusion 2-categories, naturally emerge from lattice models and physical intuitions. In this process, we also introduce some basic notions and important results of topological orders.

Abstract:Dans cet article je présente une analyse critique de l’approche habituelle de l’identité mathématique qui a son origine dans les travaux de Frege et Russell, en faisant un contraste avec les approches alternatives de Platon et Geach. Je pose ensuite ce problème dans un cadre de la théorie des catégories et montre que la notion d’identité ne peut pas être « internalisée » par les moyens catégoriques standards. Enfin, je présente deux approches de l’identité mathématique plus spécifiques: une avec la fibration catégorielle et l’autre avec des catégories supérieures faibles.

Enhancement for categories and homotopical algebra

Abstract:We develop foundations for abstract homotopy theory based on Grothendieck's idea of a "derivator". The theory is model-independent, and does not depend on model categories, nor on simplicial sets. It is designed to accomodate all the usual potential applications, such as e.g. enhancements for derived categories of coherent sheaves, in a way that is as close as possible to usual category theory.

Abstract:Scholars have long debated how rigor can be achieved in qualitative analysis. To answer this question, we need to better understand how theory is generated from data. Qualitative analysis is, at its core, a categorization process. Nevertheless, despite a surge of interest in categorization within the social sciences, insights from categorization theory have not yet been applied to our understanding of qualitative analysis. Drawing from categorization theory, we argue that the movement from data to theory is an active process in which researchers choose between multiple moves that help them to make sense of their data. In addition, we develop a framework of the main moves that people use when they categorize data and demonstrate that evidence of these moves can also be found in past qualitative scholarship. Our framework emphasizes that if we are not sufficiently reflexive and explicit about the active analytical processes that generate theoretical insights, we cannot be transparent and, thus, rigorous about how we analyze data. We discuss the implications of our framework for increasing rigor in qualitative analysis, for actively constructing categories from data, and for spurring more methodological plurality within qualitative theory building.

It differs from the traditional category theory in two directions: all morphisms have types and the composition of morphisms is not necessary a morphism. Two aspects of application of typed category theory are discussed: cones and limits of knowledge complexity classes and knowledge completion with pseudo-functors.

Abstract:Category theory plays a special character in mathematics - it unifies distinct branches under the same formalism. Despite this integrative power in math, it also seems to provide the proper foundations to the experimental physicist. In this work, we present another application of category in physics, related to the principle of relativity. The operational construction of (inertial) frames of reference indicates that only the movement between one and another frame is enough to differentiate both of them. This fact is hidden when one applies only group theory to connect frames. In fact, rotations and translations only change coordinates, keeping the frame inert. The change of frames is only attainable by boosts in the classical and relativistic regimes for both Galileo and Lorentz (Poincaré) groups. Besides providing a non-trivial example of application of category theory in physics, we also fulfill the presented gap when one directly applies group theory for connecting frames.

Towards computational methods for category theory

Abstract:In this work, we describe a computational model for categories and functors. The categories that are handled by this model are locally finitely presentable categories which can be "sufficiently finitely" described to a computer. As an application of this model, we introduce a criterion to show whether a functor, as described in the model, is a left adjoint. The verification of this criterion can be partially automatised, if not fully in some cases, as witnessed by an implementation. While this work is focused on computational aspects, it is relevant to the broader categorical community, as it presents a new way to check whether functors are left adjoints and outlines a new computational methodology in category theory.
