Abstract:We give a formula, in terms of products of commutators, for the application of the odd multiplicative character to higher Loday symbols. On our way we construct a product on the relative K-groups and investigate the multiplicative properties of the relative Chern character.

Abstract:Fix a prime number and let be a CM extension of number fields in which splits relatively. Let be an automorphic representation of a quasi-split unitary group of even rank with respect to such that is ordinary above with respect to the Siegel parabolic subgroup. We construct the cyclotomic -adic -function of , and a certain generating series of Selmer classes of special cycles on Shimura varieties. We show, under some conditions, that if the vanishing order of the -adic -function is 1, then our generating series is modular and yields explicit nonzero classes (called Selmer theta lifts) in the Selmer group of the Galois representation of associated with ; in particular, the rank of this Selmer group is at least 1. In fact, we prove a precise formula relating the -adic heights of Selmer theta lifts to the derivative of the -adic -function. In parallel to Perrin-Riou's -adic analogue of the Gross–Zagier formula, our formula is the -adic analogue of the arithmetic inner product formula recently established by Chao Li and the second author.

Abstract:We discuss various computational issues around the problem of determining the character values of finite Chevalley groups, in the framework provided by Lusztig's theory of character sheaves. Some of the remaining open questions (concerning certain roots of unity) for the cuspidal unipotent character sheaves of groups of exceptional type are resolved.

Abstract:We study the cohomology rings of tiling spaces $\Omega$ given by cubical substitutions. While there have been many calculations before of cohomology groups of such tiling spaces, the innovation here is that we use computer-assisted methods to compute the cup-product structure. This leads to examples of substitution tilings with isomorphic cohomology groups but different cohomology rings. Part of the interest in studying the cup product comes from Bellissard's gap-labeling conjecture, which is known to hold in dimensions $\le 3$, but where a proof is known in dimensions $\ge 4$ only when the Chern character from $K^0(\Omega)$ to $H^*(\Omega,\mathbb{Q})$ lands in $H^*(\Omega,\mathbb{Z})$. Computation of the cup product on cohomology often makes it possible to compute the Chern character. We introduce a natural generalization of the gap-labeling conjecture, called the equivariant gap-labeling conjecture, which applies to tilings with a finite symmetry group. Again this holds in dimensions $\le 3$, but we are able to show that it fails in general in dimensions $\ge 4$. This, plus some of our cup product calculations, makes it plausible that the gap-labeling conjecture might fail in high dimensions.

Abstract:Abstract Cumulants are a notion that comes from the classical probability theory; they are an alternative to a notion of moments. We adapt the probabilistic concept of cumulants to the setup of a linear space equipped with two multiplication structures. We present an algebraic formula which involves those two multiplications as a sum of products of cumulants. In our approach, beside cumulants, we make use of standard combinatorial tools as forests and their colourings. We also show that the resulting statement can be understood as an analogue of Leonov–Shiryaev’s formula. This purely combinatorial presentation leads to some conclusions about structure constant of Jack characters.

On a product formula of bivariate $p$-adic Gamma values

Abstract:We establish a derivative formula of $p$-adic Shintani $L$-functions, thus those of totally real $p$-adic Hecke $L$-functions with trivial moduli. As an application, we present a product formula of bivariate $p$-adic Gamma values by specializing to genus $L$-functions, which takes a particularly simple form when the field is $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt{3})$. In the appendix we explain how the product formula is supposed to encode a higher analytic analogue of the Davenport-Hasse relation.

Euler characteristics of arithmetic groups

Abstract:We develop a general method for computing the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups G of GL_m(O_K) where O_K is the ring of integers in a number field K. With this method we find, that for large, explicitly computed dimensions m, the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups of GL_m(O_K) vanishes. For other cases, some of them very important for spaces of multiple polylogarithms, we compute non-zero homological Euler characteristic. With the same method we find all the torsion elements in GL_3(Z) up to conjugation. Finally, our method allows us to obtain a formula for the Dedekind zeta function at -1 in terms of the ideal class set and the multiplicative group of quadratic extensions of the base ring.

One-level densities in families of Grössencharakters associated to CM elliptic curves

Abstract:We study the low-lying zeros of a family of $L$-functions attached to the CM elliptic curves $E_d \;:\; y^2 = x^3 - dx$, for each odd and square-free integer $d$. Writing the $L$-function of $E_d$ as $L(s-\frac12, \xi_d)$ for the appropriate Grössencharakter $\xi_d$ of conductor $\mathfrak{f}_d$, the family $\mathcal{F}_d$ is defined as the family of $L$-functions attached to the Grössencharakters $\xi_{d,k}$, where for each integer $k \geq 1$, $\xi_{d, k}$ denotes the primitive character inducing $\xi_d^k$. We observe that $25\%$ of the functions in $\mathcal{F}_d$ have negative root number. This makes the symmetry type of the family (unitary, symplectic or orthogonal) somewhat mysterious, as none of the symmetry types would lead to this proportion. We give an asymptotic expression for the one-level density in the family of $L$-functions in $\mathcal{F}_{d}$ with conductor at most $K^2 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d)$, and find that $\mathcal{F}_d$ breaks down into two natural subfamilies; namely, a symplectic family ($L(s, \xi_{d,k})$ for $k$ even) and an orthogonal family ($L(s, \xi_{d,k})$ for $k$ odd). For $k$ odd, $\mathcal{F}_d$ is in fact a subfamily of the automorphic forms of fixed level $4 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d )$, and even weight $k+1$, and this larger family also has orthogonal symmetry. Finally, we compute explicit lower order terms in decreasing powers of $\log (K^2 \mathrm{N} (\mathfrak{f}_d) )$ for each case.

Abstract:We determine the (arithmetic) local monodromy at 0 and at ∞ of the Kloosterman sheaf using local Fourier transformations and Laumon’s stationary phase principle. We then calculate ǫ-factors for symmetric products of the Kloosterman sheaf. Using Laumon’s product formula, we get functional equations of L-functions for these symmetric products, and prove a conjecture of Evans on signs of constants of functional equations.

Abstract:An explicit formula for the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi)\vert^2$ is known, where $\chi$ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p$. Bounds on the relative class number of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$ follow. Lately the authors obtained that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi)\vert^2$ is asymptotic to $\pi^2/6$, where $\chi$ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p\equiv 1\pmod{2d}$ which are trivial on a subgroup $H$ of odd order $d$ of the multiplicative group $({\mathbb Z}/p{\mathbb Z})^*$, provided that $d\ll\frac{\log p}{\log\log p}$. Bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac{p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$ follow. Here, for a given integer $d_0>1$ we consider the same questions for the non-primitive odd Dirichlet characters $\chi'$ modulo $d_0p$ induced by the odd primitive characters $\chi$ modulo $p$. We obtain new estimates for Dedekind sums and deduce that the mean value of $\vert L(1,\chi')\vert^2$ is asymptotic to $\frac{\pi^2}{6}\prod_{q\mid d_0}\left (1-\frac{1}{q^2}\right )$, where $\chi$ runs over all odd primitive Dirichlet characters of prime conductors $p$ which are trivial on a subgroup $H$ of odd order $d\ll\frac{\log p}{\log\log p}$. As a consequence we improve the previous bounds on the relative class number of the subfield of degree $\frac{p-1}{2d}$ of the cyclotomic field ${\mathbb Q}(\zeta_p)$. Moreover, we give a method to obtain explicit formulas and use Mersenne primes to show that our restriction on $d$ is essentially sharp.

Abstract:We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the Td12 -genus, the Γ-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

Abstract:Using some basic properties of the gamma function, we evaluate a simple class of infinite products involving Dirichlet characters as a finite product of gamma functions and, in the case of odd characters, as a finite product of sines. As a consequence we obtain evaluations of certain multiple $L$-series. In the final part of this paper we derive expressions for infinite products of cyclotomic polynomials, again as finite products of gamma or of sine functions.

As an application of this characterization result, we explicitly determine the class of conjugations commuting with or making complex symmetric by introducing a new class of conjugations in . Moreover, we analyse their properties while keeping the whole Hardy space, model space and Beurling-type subspaces invariant. Furthermore, we extended our study concerning conjugations in the case of finite Blaschke products.
