Abstract:We use orbifold structures to deduce degeneracy statements for holomorphic maps into logarithmic surfaces. We improve former results in the smooth case and generalize them to singular pairs. In particular, we give applications on nodal surfaces and complements of singular plane curves.

Abstract:We consider the deformations of complex orbifolds with the underlying smooth structures being fixed. As a corollary, we can prove that the deformations of a Calabi-Yau orbifold is unobstructed by using standard arguments. Then we consider the period map for a family of complex Kähler orbifolds. We prove that the period map is holomorphic, horizontal and consistent with our Kodaira-Spencer map.

Abstract:We study complex hyperbolicity in the setting of geometric orbifolds introduced by F. Campana. Generalizing classical methods to this context, we obtain degeneracy statements for entire curves with ramification in situations where no Second Main Theorem is known from value distribution theory.

Abstract:We derive a necessary and sufficient condition on a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{P}^n$ for the associated logarithmic cotangent bundle to be ample modulo boundary. We extend this result to the orbifold setting and give some applications concerning hyperbolicity of pairs.

Abstract:We prove that if $X$ is a compact complex analytic variety, which has quotient singularities in codimension 2, then there is a projective bimeromorphic morphism $f\colon Y\to X$, such that $Y$ has quotient singularities, and that the indeterminacy locus of $f^{-1}$ has codimension at least 3 in $X$. As an application, we deduce the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality on orbifold Chern classes for stable reflexive coherent sheaves on compact Kähler varieties which have quotient singularities in codimension 2.

Abstract:We study the structure of noncollapsed Gromov-Hausdorff limits of sequences, M n i , of riemannian manifolds with special holonomy. We show that these spaces are smooth manifolds with special holonomy off a closed subset of codimension ≥4. Additional results on the the detailed structure of the singular set support our main conjecture that if the M n i are compact and a certain characteristic number, C ( M n i ), is bounded independent of i , then the singularities are of orbifold type off a subset of real codimension at least 6.

Abstract:As is well-known, there exist nonconstant holomorphic maps from the plane into the Riemann sphere $\PP^1$ minus two points, the simplest example of which is an explicit realization of the uniformization map given by applying the exponential map and then composing with a Mobius transformation taking 0 and $\infty$ to the two given punctures. Likewise, we can map the plane into the sphere minus one point by simply applying directly a Mobius transformation taking $\infty$ to this puncture. In this paper we prove two parametrized versions of this uniformization result using different methods. We first present a slightly easier version using complex analysis, which allows us to construct the uniformizing maps more or less explicitly in terms of the initial coordinates given. Then we give the more general and coordinate invariant version, which we prove by extending Kodaira's theory of the Jacobian fibration to a family of singular curves constructed via algebraic geometry. Finally, using the results obtained with the Jacobian fibration, we obtain two equivalent conditions for an complex surface nonhyperbolically fibered over a complex curve to be holomorphically dominable by $\CC^2$. In theorem \ref{thm:surf} we show that this dominability is equivalent to the apparently weaker condition of the existence of a Zariski dense image of $\CC$ and equivalent to the quasiprojectivity of the base curve together with the nonnegativity of the orbifold Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We construct two-dimensional families of complex hyperbolic structures on disc orbibundles over the sphere with three cone points. This contrasts with the previously known examples of the same type, which are locally rigid. In particular, we obtain examples of complex hyperbolic structures on trivial and cotangent disc bundles over closed Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We prove that if $f\colon\mathbb{C}^p\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ is a holomorphic mapping of maximal rank whose image lies in the Fermat hypersurface of degree $d>(n+1)\max\{n-p,1\}$, then its image is contained in a linear subspace of dimension at most $\bigg[\dfrac{n-1}{2}\bigg]$. Analog in the logarithmic case is also given. Our result strengthens a classical result of Green and provides a Nevanlinna theoretic proof for a recent result due to Etesse.

Toroidal analogues of the Grothendieck-Springer map

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of noncommutative ruled surfaces over orbifold curves to find equivariant deformations of moduli spaces of framed sheaves on equivariant elliptic surfaces. These derived categories are a common generalization of the category of modules of the preprojective algebra and of the category of twisted D-modules over a curve. We show that the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on an equivariant elliptic surface is controlled by an elliptic root system, and conjecture in general and prove in special cases that moduli spaces of objects in these derived categories provides a deformation of birational models for the Hilbert scheme. We also study the applications of this deformation to the geometric representation theory of the central fiber, specifically to produce geometric correspondences giving rise to Lie algebra actions on the equivariant cohomology of the central fiber and give formulas for the action of the Namikawa-Markman Weyl group of monodromy reflections in terms of this Lie algebra.

Abstract:We study isomorphism classes of untwisted irregular singular meromorphic connections on principal bundles over (wild) Riemann surfaces, for any complex reductive structure group $G$ and polar divisor. In particular we compute the stabilisers of suitable marked points on their principal part orbits, showing the stabilisers are connected and controlled by the corresponding filtration of (Levi factors of) nested parabolic subgroups of $G$; this uniquely determines the orbits as complex homogeneous manifolds for groups of jets of principal $G$-bundle automorphisms. Moreover, when the residue is semisimple we stratify the space of orbits by the stabilisers, relating this to local wild mapping class groups and generalising the Levi stratification of a Cartan subalgebra $\mathfrak{t} \subseteq \mathfrak{g} = \operatorname{Lie}(G)$: the dense stratum corresponds to the generic setting of irregular isomonodromic deformations à la Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno.

Finiteness results for hyperbolic orbifold pairs

Abstract:Noguchi proved that the set of dominant maps from a fixed variety to a fixed hyperbolic variety is finite. We extend this result to the setting of orbifold pairs, as introduced by Campana, under suitable assumptions. Certain compactness properties also allow us to prove that the set of orbifold pointed maps and the orbifold automorphism group are finite.

Abstract:We study several new invariants associated to a holomorphic projective structure on a Riemann surface of finite analytic type: the Lyapunov exponent of its holonomy which is of probabilistic/dynamical nature and was introduced in our previous work; the degree which measures the asymptotic covering rate of the developing map; and a family of harmonic measures on the Riemann sphere, previously introduced by Hussenot. We show that the degree and the Lyapunov exponent are related by a simple formula and give estimates for the Hausdorff dimension of the harmonic measures in terms of the Lyapunov exponent. In accordance with the famous Sullivan dictionary, this leads to a description of the space of such projective structures that is reminiscent of that of the space of polynomials in holomorphic dynamics.

Logarithmic negative tangency and root stacks

Abstract:We study stable maps to normal crossings pairs with possibly negative tangency orders. There are two independent models: punctured Gromov-Witten theory of pairs and orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of root stacks with extremal ages. Exploiting the tropical structure of the punctured mapping space, we define and study a new virtual class for the punctured theory. This arises as a refined intersection product on the Artin fan, and produces a distinguished sector of punctured Gromov-Witten invariants. Restricting to genus zero, we show that these invariants coincide with the orbifold invariants, first for smooth pairs, and then for normal crossings pairs after passing to a sufficiently refined blowup. This builds on previous work to provide a complete picture of the logarithmic-orbifold comparison in genus zero, which is compatible with splitting and thus allows for the wholesale importation of orbifold techniques, including boundary recursion and torus localisation. Contemporaneous work of Johnston uses the comparison to give a new proof of the associativity of the Gross-Siebert intrinsic mirror ring.

Gromov-Witten theory of bicyclic pairs

Abstract:A bicyclic pair is a smooth surface equipped with a pair of smooth divisors intersecting in two reduced points. Resolutions of self-nodal curves constitute an important special case. We investigate the logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory of bicyclic pairs. We establish all-genus correspondences with local Gromov-Witten theory and open Gromov-Witten theory, and a genus zero correspondence with orbifold Gromov-Witten theory. For self-nodal curves in $\mathbb{P}(1,1,r)$ we obtain a closed formula for the genus zero invariants and relate these to the invariants of local curves. We also establish a conceptual relationship to the invariants obtained by smoothing the self-nodal curve. The technical heart of the paper is a qualitatively new analysis of the degeneration formula for stable logarithmic maps, complemented by torus localisation and scattering techniques.

The Degeneracy Loci for Smooth Moduli of Sheaves

Abstract:Let S be a smooth projective surface over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that, under certain technical assumptions, the degeneracy locus of the universal sheaf over the moduli space of stable sheaves is either empty or an irreducible Cohen-Macaulay variety of the expected dimension. We also provide a criterion for when the degeneracy locus is non-empty. This result generalizes the work of Bayer, Chen, and Jiang for the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. The above result is a special case of a general phenomenon: for a perfect complex of Tor-amplitude [0,1], the geometry of the degeneracy locus is closely related to the geometry of the derived Grassmannian. We analyze their birational geometry and relate it to the incidence varieties of derived Grassmannians. As a corollary, we prove a statement previously claimed by the author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.06860" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.06860">arXiv:2408.06860</a>.

Holomorphic projective connections on surfaces and osculating spaces

Abstract:We study complex analytic projective connections on surfaces in projective n-spaces in terms of the "second" neighborhood of the surface in the ambient space, and in terms of the osculating behavior of the integral curves. We also investigate the action of a remarkable rational transformation on projective connections, and give the geometrical interpretation of joint invariants of a group closely related to the study of equivalence classes of projective connections on surfaces.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal F$ be a holomorphic foliation on a compact Káhler surface with hyperbolic singularities and no foliation cycle. We prove that if the limit set of $\mathcal F$ has zero Lebesgue measure, then its complement is a modification of a Stein domain. The proof consists in building, in several steps, a metric of positive curvature for the normal bundle of $\mathcal F$ near the limit set. Then we construct a proper strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion function for the complement of the limit set, by adapting Brunella's ideas to our singular context. The arguments hold more generally when the limit set is thin, a property relying on Brownian motion.
