Abstract:The electromagnetic wave field propagating in a helical wave guide is decomposed in an angular momentum basis. Eigenmodes are calculated using a truncation in $l$ and a discretisation of the boundary condition. Modes slightly slower than light are considered for relativistic particle acceleration.

Abstract:We analyse the coupled modes propagation in a parallel-plate gyroelectromagnetic biaxial chirowaveguide. The transverse components of electric and magnetic fields in such bianisotropic waveguide are expressed in terms of the longitudinal components of E and H, and the effects of different constitutive parameters on the dispersion characteristics as well as cut-off frequencies of propagating modes are demonstrated numerically. The results show that the processes of mode bifurcation and conversion also take place in the parallel-plate gyroelectromagnetic biaxial chirowaveguide.

Abstract:The propagation characteristics of hybrid modes in the circular cylindrical and coaxial line gyrotropic chirowaveguides are studied using the technique of separation variables. First, the transverse components of electric and magnetic fields are expressed in terms of the longitudinal components of (E) over bar and (H) over bar. Then, numerical results are presented for the dispersion behavior and cut-off frequencies as well as the field distributions of hybrid E H-0,H-1 and H E(n,1), with the effects of different electromagnetic parameters of gyrotropic chiral material taken into consideration. It is shown that the process of mode bifurcation also takes place in the gyrotropic chirowaveguides; this is similar to the cases of reciprocal chirowaveguides. But, gyrotropic chirowaveguides are nonreciprocal bianisotropic devices.

Abstract:The phenomenological description of propagation of atomic matter waves inside a curved atom wave guide is presented based on the effective action principle. The evolutions in both temporal and spatial domains for the atomic matter wave in the presence of guiding potential fields (classical and quantized) are considered. The coherent control of three-level atomic matter waves in a wave guide by an external controlling light is briefly discussed. The concepts of {\it atomic matter-wave bandgap structure} in a spatially periodic guiding field ({\it e.g.}, the interior potential of carbon peapod which can trap both atoms and light) and {\it optical lattice bandgap medium} are suggested.

Abstract:In this paper, an numerical model for studying the wave propagations in the parallel plate waveguides excited by the slant incident waves with arbitrary modes is developed. In this model, first, the slant incident wave is decomposed into Ez and Hz components and both the reflected and transmitted fields are expressed as the combination of the Ez and Hz modes, where the z direction is normal to the aperture on the junction plane. Second, the system matrix equation is obtained and solved by a hybrid matching method in which the field continuity at the discontinuity aperture is tested with hybridization of the point matching and modal matching. This hybrid method is complete for it can be used for solving the wave propagations in the symmetric stepped parallel waveguide excited by arbitrary modes. This work is useful in modeling the wave propagations in the electric-large dielectric cylinder antenna arrays which have a stepped parallel plate waveguide structure.

Abstract:This article investigates the acceleration of an injected electron inside a waveguide with a Piet-Hein cross section and a perfect electric conductor wall containing cold non-magnetized plasma. At first, by applying the boundary conditions, the electromagnetic field components are calculated numerically for TE modes. Then the dispersion curves will be drawn, and the cutoff frequency of different modes will be analyzed. In the following, by injecting an electron into the waveguide and considering its interaction with the electromagnetic field, the relativistic equations of energy and momentum will be solved, and the acceleration of the electron will be calculated. Acceleration gradient, deflection angle, and electron trajectory will be discussed. Also, the effect of plasma density on particle acceleration is investigated and compared.

Abstract:We analyze the axial electric field intensity distribution and the phase velocity distribution of high-order Hermite-Gaussian (HG) mode laser beams. Using a three-dimensional test particle simulation, the numerical results of electrons accelerated by Hermite-Gaussian (0,0), and (3,0) mode laser beams are presented. It is established that electrons can be more favorably captured and accelerated in an odd high-order Hermite-Gaussian mode laser beam.

Abstract:We propose a mechanism for electron acceleration in which circularly polarized electromagnetic waves (CPEMW) propagate along a uniform magnetic field in a medium with a tapered refractive index. Results show that with a decreasing refractive index and a moderate CPEMW electric field, e.g., 1.20 × 108 V/m, the relativistic factor of an electron can go above 14 after it travels 10 cm in the direction of CPEMW propagation. Without tapering of the refractive index, the maximum value of the relativistic factor is less than 2.92 under the same wave and guiding magnetic field conditions. Similar acceleration efficiency is found for electrons with different initial velocities.

By manipulating the integrals of motion, some typical quantities of particle motion have been presented analytically in terms of explicit functions of three free parameters. Abstract:The acceleration of charged particles, producing collimated monoenergetic beams, over short distances holds the promise to offer new tools in medicine and diagnostics. Here, we consider a possible mechanism for accelerating protons to high energies by using a phase modulated circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating along a constant magnetic field. It is observed that a plane wave with dimensionless amplitude of 0.1 is capable to accelerate a 1 keV proton to 386 MeV under optimum conditions. Finally, we discuss possible limitations of the acceleration scheme.

Abstract:There is significant interest in tailoring wave packets that transversely accelerate during propagation. The first realisation was in the optical domain, the Airy beam. Valid in the paraxial approximation, such beams were shown to transversely accelerate while following a parabolic caustic, even if the centroid itself travelled along a rectilinear path. Later, non-paraxial optical fields in the form of Weber and Mathieu beams were demonstrated, as well as non-optical wave packets with electrons. Such fields have found a plethora of applications from particle manipulation, spatial-temporal beam control, plasma control to non-linear optics. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, the angular acceleration of light, achieved by non-canonical superpositions of Bessel beams carrying orbital angular momentum. We show that by adjustment of a single parameter the acceleration and deceleration may be tuned continuously. We observe an unexpected energy transfer mechanism between spatial regions of the field which we investigate experimentally and theoretically. Our findings offer a new class of optical field that will enable studies in matter waves and opto-fluidics.

Abstract:Some strong field effects on test particle motion associated with the propagation of a plane electromagnetic wave in the exact theory of general relativity are investigated. Two different profiles of the associated radiation flux are considered in comparison, corresponding to either constant or oscillating electric and magnetic fields with respect to a natural family of observers. These are the most common situations to be experimentally explored, and have a well known counterpart in the flat spacetime limit. The resulting line elements are determined by a single metric function, which turns out to be expressed in terms of standard trigonometric functions in the case of a constant radiation flux, and in terms of special functions in the case of oscillating flux, leading to different features of test particle motion. The world line deviation between both uncharged and charged particles on different spacetime trajectories due to the combined effect of gravitational and electromagnetic forces is studied. The interaction of charged particles with the background radiation field is also discussed through a general relativistic description of the inverse Compton effect. Motion as well as deviation effects on particles endowed with spin are studied too. Special situations may occur in which the direction of the spin vector change during the interaction, leading to obsevables effects like spin-flip.

Guided Waves in Static Curved Spacetimes

Abstract:This work investigates the propagation of electromagnetic waves in waveguides within static curved spacetimes. We develop a covariant formalism using Hertzian potentials to describe guided electromagnetic modes in spacetimes with metrics that depend on the proper length along the waveguide axis. The Maxwell equations are solved using a Hertzian potential ansatz, resulting in wave equations for TE and TM modes. We analyze the axial and transverse components of the solutions and derive expressions for the cutoff frequency and guide wavelength. The special case of TEM modes is also examined. As an illustrative example, we apply the formalism to radial propagation in Schwarzschild spacetime. This work provides a framework for studying guided electromagnetic waves in curved spacetime geometries, opening up potential applications in precision tests of general relativity and relativistic quantum optics.

Electron Acceleration Using Twisted Laser Wavefronts

Abstract:Using plasma mirror injection we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that a circularly polarized helical laser pulse can accelerate highly collimated dense bunches of electrons to several hundred MeV using currently available laser systems. The circular-polarized helical (Laguerre-Gaussian) beam has a unique field structure where the transverse fields have helix-like wave-fronts which tend to zero on-axis where, at focus, there are large on-axis longitudinal magnetic and electric fields. The acceleration of electrons by this type of laser pulse is analysed as a function of radial mode number and it is shown that the radial mode number has a profound effect on electron acceleration close to the laser <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://axis.Using" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations a circular-polarized helical laser beam with power of 0.6 PW is shown to produce several dense attosecond bunches. The bunch nearest the peak of the laser envelope has an energy of 0.47 GeV with spread as narrow as 10\%, a charge of 26 pC with duration of $\sim 400$ as, and a very low divergence of 20 mrad}. The confinement by longitudinal magnetic fields in the near-axis region allows the longitudinal electric fields to accelerate the electrons over a long period after the initial reflection. Both the longitudinal E and B fields are shown to be essential for electron acceleration in this scheme. This opens up new paths towards attosecond electron beams, or attosecond radiation, at many laser facilities around the world.

Abstract:In the paper, we show that there exists a close analogy between the behavior of de Broglie matter waves and that of electromagnetic waves inside a hollow waveguide, such that the guided photons can be treated as free massive particles subject to a relativistic quantum-mechanical equation. Inspired by the effective rest mass of guided photons and the zitterbewegung phenomenon of the Dirac electron, at variance with the well-known Higgs mechanism we present some different heuristic ideas on the origin of mass.

Abstract:The nonlinear theory of helix traveling wave tube (TWT) was developed, based on the particle simulation in time domain. The wave propagating through the helix was modeled with a configuration consisting of the three-dimensional helix belt, the dielectric rod load, and conducting walls. In the derivation, either a uniform field generated by a solenoid or a periodic field produced by a permanent magnet stack, were used to focus the electron beam; and the electric field induced by electron beam was evaluated with Poisson equation on the basis of finite-difference grid formulation. The interaction between the electron beam and the wave was calculated in MacCormack difference method. The time varying output of the helix TWT was calculated. The simulated results were compared with those obtained by Magic simulation code and three-dimensional Christine code.

Abstract:An analytical study of charged particle dynamics in the presence of an elliptically polarized electromagnetic wave and a uniform axial magnetic field is presented. It is found that a charged particle resonantly gains energy for gω0/ω′=±1, ω0, and ω′, respectively, being the cyclotron frequency of the charged particle in the external magnetic field and Doppler-shifted frequency of the wave seen by the particle, and g=±1, respectively, correspond to right and left-handedness of polarization. An explicit solution of the governing equation is also presented in terms of particle position or laboratory time, for the specific case of resonant energy gain in a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. These explicit position- or time-dependent expressions are useful for better insight into various phenomena, viz., cosmic ray generation, microwave generation, plasma heating, and particle acceleration.

Abstract:This paper studies the acceleration of an electron in a magnetized plasma waveguide caused by the interaction between the twisted electromagnetic wave and the plasma wave in a motional plasma. The spatial dependence of the amplitude and phase of the twisted TM mode has been derived by solving the wave equation. With appropriately assigned initial values, total electron energy gain can be calculated using numerical calculations. Numerical results show that plasma motion, as long as the twisted electromagnetic wave pulse, significantly affects electron acceleration during an electron's passage through the waveguide.

Abstract:The question as to whether neutron acceleration can occur in uniform electromagnetic fields is examined. Although such an effect has been predicted using the canonical equations of motion some doubt has been raised recently as to whether it is in principle observable for a spin 1/2 particle. To resolve this issue a gedanken experiment is proposed and analyzed using a wave packet construction for the neutron beam. By allowing arbitrary orientation for the neutron spin as well as for the electric and magnetic fields a non vanishing acceleration of the center of the neutron wave packet is found which confirms the predictions of the canonical formalism.
