Abstract:In this paper we complete the global qualitative analysis of a quartic ecological model. In particular, studying global bifurcations of singular points and limit cycles, we prove that the corresponding dynamical system has at most two limit cycles.

Then, by using the Melnikov function, we consider the limit cycle bifurcation problem of a 3-piecewise near Hamiltonian system with two switching lines, obtaining \begin{document}$ 2n+3[\frac{n+1}{2}] $\end{document} limit cycles near the double generalized homoclinic loop.

Abstract:This paper studies the number of centers and limit cycles of the family of planar quartic polynomial vector fields that has the invariant algebraic curve $(4x^2-1)(4y^2-1)=0.$ The main interest for this type of vector fields comes from their appearance in some mathematical models in Game Theory composed by two players. In particular, we find examples with five nested limit cycles surrounding the same singularity, as well as examples with four limit cycles formed by two disjoint nests, each one of them with two limit cycles. We also prove a Berlinski\u ı's type result for this family of vector fields.

Abstract:A. Gasull shared a list of 33 open problems in low dimensional dynamical systems in his work in 2021. The second part of Problem 3 is about whether the limit cycle of a quasi-homogeneous system $ \dot{x}=y,\; \dot{y}=-x^3+\alpha x^2y+y^3 $ is unique. In this paper, we give a positive answer to this question by analysing the uniqueness of the heteroclinic separatrix at infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, the limit cycles and local bifurcation of critical periods for a class of switching Z2 equivariant quartic system with two symmetric singularities are investigated. First, through the computation of Lyapunov constants, the conditions of the two singularities to become the centers are determined. Then, we prove that there are at most 18 limit cycles with a distribution pattern of 9-9 around the two symmetric singular points of the system. Numerical simulation is conducted to validate the obtained results. Furthermore, by calculating the period constants, we determine the conditions for the critical point to be a weak center of finite order. Finally, the number of local critical periods that bifurcate from the equilibrium point under the center conditions is discussed. This study presents the first example of a quartic switching smooth system with 18 limit cycles and 4 local critical periods bifurcating from two symmetric singular points.

Abstract:In this article, we explore the bifurcation problem of limit cycles near the double eight figure loop (compound cycle with a 2-polycycle connecting two homoclinic loops). A general theory is established to find the lower bound of the maximal number of limit cycles (isolated periodic orbits) near the double eight figure loop. The Liénard system, a well-known nonlinear dynamical model, appears in a natural way in physics, chemistry, engineering, and so on, where periodic phenomena play a relevant role. As an application, we investigate an th-order generalized Liénard system and prove the system has at least limit cycles near the double eight figure loop for any and , and their distribution is also gained.

Abstract:We perform both analytical and numerical bifurcation analysis of a forest-grassland ecosystem model coupled with human interaction. The model consists of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations incorporating the human perception of forest/grassland value. The system displays multiple steady states corresponding to different forest densities as well as regimes characterized by both stable and unstable limit cycles. We derive analytically the conditions with respect to the model parameters that give rise to various types of codimension-one criticalities such as transcritical, saddle-node, and Andronov-Hopf bifurcations and codimension-two criticalities such as cusp and Bogdanov-Takens bifurcations. We also perform a numerical continuation of the branches of limit cycles. By doing so, we reveal turning points of limit cycles marking the appearance/disappearance of sustained oscillations. These far-from-equilibrium criticalities that cannot be detected analytically give rise to the abrupt loss of the sustained oscillations, thus leading to another mechanism of catastrophic shifts
Bifurcation analysis of multiple limit cycles created in boundary equilibrium bifurcations in hybrid systems

Abstract:A boundary equilibrium bifurcation (BEB) in a hybrid dynamical system occurs when a regular equilibrium collides with a switching surface in phase space. This causes a transition to a pseudo-equilibrium embedded within the switching surface, but limit cycles (LCs) and other invariant sets can also be created and the nature of these is not well understood for systems with more than two dimensions. This work treats two codimension-two scenarios in hybrid systems of any number of dimensions, where the number of small-amplitude limit cycles bifurcating from a BEB changes. The first scenario involves a limit cycle (LC) with a Floquet multiplier $1$ and for nearby parameter values the BEB creates a pair of limit cycles. The second scenario involves a limit cycle with a Floquet multiplier $-1$ and for nearby parameter values the BEB creates a period-doubled solution. Both scenarios are unfolded in a general setting, showing that typical two-parameter bifurcation diagrams have a curve of saddle-node or period-doubling bifurcations emanating transversally from a curve of BEBs at the codimension-two point. The results are illustrated with three-dimensional examples and an eight-dimensional airfoil model. Detailed computational results show excellent agreement to the unfolding theory and reveal further interesting dynamical features that remain to be explored.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of small-amplitude limit cycles bifurcated from a planar piecewise smooth focus-parabolic type cubic system that has one switching line given by the x-axis. By applying the generalized polar coordinates to the parabolic subsystem and computing the Lyapunov constants, we obtain 11 weak center conditions and 9 weak focus conditions at (0,0). Under these conditions, we prove that a planar piecewise smooth cubic system with a focus-parabolic-type critical point can bifurcate at least nine limit cycles. So far, our result is a new lower bound of the cyclicity of the piecewise smooth focus-parabolic type cubic system.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the bifurcation of limit cycles near a homoclinic cuspidal loop in a planar cubic near-Hamiltonian system by high-order Melnikov functions. We present a method combining the algebraic structure of Abelian integrals and Picard-Fuchs equation for computing the corresponding asymptotic expansion of Melnikov functions near the cuspidal loop. Using this system as an example, we show that planar cubic systems can have ten limit cycles bifurcating near a cubic homoclinic loop.

On the number of limit cycles in piecewise planar quadratic differential systems

Abstract:We consider piecewise quadratic perturbations of centers of piecewise quadratic systems in two zones determined by a straight line through the origin. By means of expansions of the displacement map, we are able to find isolated zeros of it, without dealing with the unsurprising difficult integrals inherent in the usual averaging approach. We apply our technique to non-smooth perturbations of the four families of isochronous centers of the Loud family, $S_1$, $S_2$, $S_3$, and $S_4$, as well as to non-smooth perturbations of non-smooth centers given by putting different $S_i$'s in each zone. To show the coverage of our approach, we apply its first order, which recovers the averaging method of the first order, in perturbations of the already mentioned centers considering all the straight lines through the origin. Then we apply its second order to perturbations of the above centers for a specific oblique straight line. Here in order to argue we introduce certain blow-ups in the perturbative parameters. As a consequence of our study, we obtain examples of piecewise quadratic systems with at least $12$ limit cycles. By analyzing two previous works of the literature claiming much more limit cycles we found some mistakes in the calculations. Therefore, the best lower bound for the number of limit cycles of a piecewise quadratic system is up to now the $12$ limit cycles found in the present paper.

Abstract:We prove that perturbing the periodic annulus of the reversible quadratic polynomial differential system $\dot x=y+ax^2$ , $\dot y=-x$ with a ≠ 0 inside the class of all quadratic polynomial differential systems we can obtain at most two limit cycles, including their multiplicities. Since the first integral of the unperturbed system contains an exponential function, the traditional methods cannot be applied, except in Figuerasa, Tucker and Villadelprat (2013, J. Diff. Equ. , 254 , 3647–3663) a computer-assisted method was used. In this paper, we provide a method for studying the problem. This is also the first purely mathematical proof of the conjecture formulated by Dumortier and Roussarie (2009, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. , 2 , 723–781) for q ⩽ 2. The method may be used in other problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study complex dynamical behaviour in biological systems due to multiple limit cycles bifurcation. We use simple epidemic and predator-prey models to show exact routes to new types of bistability, that is, bistability between equilibrium and periodic oscillation, and bistability between two oscillations, which may more realistically describe the real situations. Bifurcation theory and normal form theory are applied to investigate the multiple limit cycles bifurcating from Hopf critical point.

Abstract:We give a proof of the distribution property of limit cycles in so-called quadratic systems. We prove that the possible limit cycle distributions are either ( n , 0 ) or ( n , 1 ) (where n ∈ { 0 } ∪ N ). The aim of this article is to simplify and fill gaps in the original proof by Zhang ( On the distribution and number of limit cycles for quadratic systems with two foci , Qual. Theory Dyn. Sys. 3 (2002), 437–463). The sixteenth Hilbert problem asks for an upper bound for the number of limit cycles in polynomial systems H ( n ) , where n is the maximum degree of the polynomial defining the system. A consequence of the distribution property is that it reduces the study of H ( 2 ) to the study of the maximum number of limit cycles surrounding one singularity.

Complex oscillatory patterns near singular Hopf bifurcation in a two time-scale ecosystem

Abstract:We consider an ecological model consisting of two species of predators competing for their common prey with explicit interference competition. With a proper rescaling, the model is portrayed as a singularly perturbed system with one-fast (prey dynamics) and two-slow variables (dynamics of the predators). The model exhibits variety of rich and interesting dynamics, including, but not limited to mixed mode oscillations (MMOs), featuring concatenation of small and large amplitude oscillations, relaxation oscillations and bistability between a semi-trivial equilibrium state and a coexistence oscillatory state. Existence of co-dimenison two bifurcations such as fold-Hopf and generalized Hopf bifurcations make the system further intriguing. More interestingly, in a neighborhood of {\emph{singular Hopf}} bifurcation, long lasting transient dynamics in form of chaotic MMOs or relaxation oscillations are observed as the system approaches the periodic attractor born out of supercritical Hopf bifurcation or a semi-trivial equilibrium state respectively. The transient dynamics could persist for hundreds or thousands of generations before the ecosystem experiences a regime shift. The time series of population cycles with different types of irregular oscillations arising in this model stem from a biological realistic feature, namely, by the variation in the intraspecific competition amongst the predators. To explain these oscillations, we use bifurcation analysis and methods from {\emph{geometric singular perturbation theory}}.

Abstract:Due to their applications to many physical phenomena during these last decades the interest for studying the discontinuous piecewise differential systems has increased strongly. The limit cycles play a main role in the study of any planar differential system, but to determine the maximum number of limits cycles that a class of planar differential systems can have is one of the main problems in the qualitative theory of the planar differential systems. Thus in general to provide a sharp upper bound for the number of crossing limit cycles that a given class of piecewise linear differential system can have is a very difficult problem. In this paper we characterize the existence and the number of limit cycles for the piecewise linear differential systems formed by linear Hamiltonian systems without equilibria and separated by a reducible cubic curve, formed either by an ellipse and a straight line, or by a parabola and a straight line parallel to the tangent at the vertex of the parabola. Hence we have solved the extended 16th Hilbert problem to this class of piecewise differential systems.

Abstract:In this paper we research global dynamics and bifurcations of planar piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous polynomial differential systems. We present sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a center in piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous systems. Moreover, the center is global and non-isochronous if it exists, which cannot appear in smooth quadratic quasi-homogeneous systems. Then the global structures of piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous systems are studied. Finally we investigate limit cycle bifurcations of the piecewise smooth quadratic quasi-homogeneous center and give the maximal number of limit cycles bifurcating from the periodic orbits of the center by applying the Melnikov method for piecewise smooth near-Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the dynamic behavior of a logistic model with feedback control and Allee effect. We prove the origin of the system is always an attractor. Further, if the feedback control variable and Allee effect are big enough, the species goes extinct. According to the analysis of the Jacobian matrix of the corresponding linearized system, we obtain the threshold condition for the local asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium point. Also, we study the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcation, supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations with the change of parameter. By calculating a universal unfolding near the cusp and choosing two parameters of the system, we can draw a conclusion that the system undergoes Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension-2. Numerical simulations are carried out to confirm the feasibility of the theoretical results. Our research can be regarded as a supplement to the existing literature on the dynamics of feedback control system, since there are few results on the bifurcation in the system so far.
