Abstract:In this paper, we consider a single-server retrial queue with unreliable server and two-way communication. Inbound calls arrive according to a Poisson process. If the server is busy upon arrival, an incoming call joins the orbit and retries to occupy the server after some exponentially distributed time. Service durations of incoming calls follow the exponential distribution. In the idle time, the server makes outgoing calls. There are multiple types of outgoing calls in the system. We assume that durations of each type of outgoing calls follow a distinct exponential distribution. The server is subject to breakdowns with rates depending on the state of the server. If the breakdown occurs, the server undergoes a repair whose duration follows an exponential distribution. The aim of our research is to show that the scaled number of calls in the orbit follows a normal distribution under the condition that the retrial rate is low.

Abstract:Two independent Poisson streams of jobs flow into a single-server service system having a limited common buffer that can hold at most one job. If a type-i job (i=1,2) finds the server busy, it is blocked and routed to a separate type-i retrial (orbit) queue that attempts to re-dispatch its jobs at its specific Poisson rate. This creates a system with three dependent queues. Such a queueing system serves as a model for two competing job streams in a carrier sensing multiple access system. We study the queueing system using multi-dimensional probability generating functions, and derive its necessary and sufficient stability conditions while solving a boundary value problem. Various performance measures are calculated and numerical results are presented.

Abstract:This article analyzes an retrial queue with two-way communication under constant retrial policy. A server handles both inbound and outbound calls. The inbound calls arrive in batches according to a compound Poisson process. The server makes an outbound call that follows the Poisson process during its inactive period. The service duration of inbound and outbound calls follows two different arbitrary distributions, while retrial time follows an exponential distribution. Using the supplementary variable technique, the system of differential-difference equations is developed to directly compute the distribution of orbit length at random epoch. The execution of the waiting time distribution for an arbitrary call of an incoming batch constitutes the most challenging task in this study. We also conduct a comprehensive cost analysis to minimize the overall cost of system operation. Furthermore, a variety of performance metrics and numerical findings validate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:The interest to retrial queueing systems is due to their application to telephone systems. The paper studies multiserver retrial queueing systems with $n$ servers. Arrival process is a quite general point process. An arriving customer occupies one of free servers. If upon arrival all servers are busy, then the customer waits for his service in orbit, and after random time retries more and more to occupy a server. The orbit has one waiting space only, and arriving customer, who finds all servers busy and the waiting space occupied, losses from the system. Time intervals between possible retrials are assumed to have arbitrary distribution (the retrial scheme is exactly explained in the paper). The paper provides analysis of this system. Specifically the paper studies optimal number of servers to decrease the loss proportion to a given value. The representation obtained for loss proportion enables us to solve the problem numerically. The algorithm for numerical solution includes effective simulation, which meets the challenge of rare events problem in simulation.

Abstract:When decomposing the total orbit into $N$ sub-orbits (or simply orbits) related to each of $N$ servers and through comparing the numbers of customers in these orbits, we introduce a retrial supermarket model of $N$ identical servers, where two probing-server choice numbers are respectively designed for dynamically allocating each primary arrival and each retrial arrival into these orbits when the chosen servers are all busy. Note that the designed purpose of the two choice numbers can effectively improve performance measures of this retrial supermarket model. This paper analyzes a simple and basic retrial supermarket model of N identical servers, that is, Poisson arrivals, exponential service and retrial times. To this end, we first provide a detailed probability computation to set up an infinite-dimensional system of differential equations (or mean-field equations) satisfied by the expected fraction vector. Then, as N goes to infinity, we apply the operator semigroup to obtaining the mean-field limit (or chaos of propagation) for the sequence of Markov processes which express the state of this retrial supermarket model. Specifically, some simple and basic conditions for the mean-field limit as well as for the Lipschitz condition are established through the first two moments of the queue length in any orbit. Finally, we show that the fixed point satisfies a system of nonlinear equations which is an interesting networking generalization of the tail equations given in the M/M/1 retrial queue, and also use the fixed point to give performance analysis of this retrial supermarket model through numerical computation.

Abstract:We consider a GI/G/c/K-type retrial queueing system with constant retrial rate. The system consists of a primary queue and an orbit queue. The primary queue has $c$ identical servers and can accommodate the maximal number of $K$ jobs. If a newly arriving job finds the full primary queue, it joins the orbit. The original primary jobs arrive to the system according to a renewal process. The jobs have general i.i.d. service times. A job in front of the orbit queue retries to enter the primary queue after an exponentially distributed time independent of the orbit queue length. Telephone exchange systems, Medium Access Protocols and short TCP transfers are just some applications of the proposed queueing system. For this system we establish minimal sufficient stability conditions. Our model is very general. In addition, to the known particular cases (e.g., M/G/1/1 or M/M/c/c systems), the proposed model covers as particular cases the deterministic service model and the Erlang model with constant retrial rate. The latter particular cases have not been considered in the past. The obtained stability conditions have clear probabilistic interpretation.

Abstract:The paper studies a multiserver retrial queueing system withm servers. Arrival process is a point process with strictly stationary and ergodic increments. A customer arriving to the system occupies one of the free servers. If upon arrival all servers are busy, then the customer goes to the secondary queue, orbit, and after some random time retries more and more to occupy a server. A service time of each customer is exponentially distributed random variable with parameter μ1. A time between retrials is exponentially distributed with parameter μ2 for each customer. Using a martingale approach the paper provides an analysis of this system. The paper establishes the stability condition and studies a behavior of the limiting queue-length distributions as μ2 increases to infinity. As μ2→∞, the paper also proves the convergence of appropriate queue-length distributions to those of the associated “usual” multiserver queueing system without retrials. An algorithm for numerical solution of the equations, associated with the limiting queue-length distribution of retrial systems, is provided.

Abstract:Retrial queues have been widely used to model many problems arising in telephone switching systems, telecommunication networks, computer networks and computer systems, etc. It is of basic importance to study reliability of retrial queues with server breakdowns and repairs because of limited ability of repairs and heavy influence of the breakdowns on the performance measure of the system. However, so far the repairable retrial queues are analyzed only by queueing theory. In this paper we give a detailed analysis for reliability of retrial queues. By using the supplementary variables method, we obtain the explicit expressions of some main reliability indexes such as the availability, failure frequency and reliability function of the server. In addition, some special queues, for instance, the repairable M/G/1 queue and repairable retrial queue can be derived from our results. These results may be generalized to the repairable multi-server retrial models.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a BMAP/G/1 retrial queue with a server subject to breakdowns and repairs, where the life time of the server is exponential and the repair time is general. We use the supplementary variable method, which combines with the matrix-analytic method and the censoring technique, to study the system. We apply the RG -factorization of a level-dependent continuous-time Markov chain of M/G/1 type to provide the stationary performance measures of the system, for example, the stationary availability, failure frequency and queue length. Furthermore, we use the RG -factorization of a level-dependent Markov renewal process of M/G/1 type to express the Laplace transform of the distribution of a first passage time such as the reliability function and the busy period.

Abstract:The study examines M [ X ] / G ( P 1 , P 2 ) / 1 feedback retrial queues coupled with starting failure, repair, delay to repair, working vacation, and general retrial times. Also, it explores how different batch sizes affect performance and how bulk arrival affects system behavior. When the server is not in use, a single customer initiates the system while the remaining customers transition to a state of orbit. A new customer must turn on the server to provide two phases of mandatory service at any time. The server could have starting issues. If the service is successfully started (with likelihood α), the customer receives service immediately. In the absence of that, the likelihood of starting failure happens (with likelihood 1 - α = α ¯ ). The server was taken for repair with some delay and that customer was transported to an orbital location. When the server was busy or unavailable, the arriving customers queued by FCFS in the orbit. We also discuss the idea of reworking with probability p, and restarting unsuccessful service attempts to improve customer happiness and service efficiency. We also introduce the concept of working vacation, which permits servers to temporarily stop providing services, affecting system performance and availability at both peak and off-peak times. A supplementary variable technique was adopted for the system's and orbit size's probability-generating function. Various performance measurements were provided with appropriate numerical examples.

Abstract:Efficient use of call center operators through technological innovations more often come at the expense of added operation management issues. In this paper, the stationary characteristics of an $M/G/1$ retrial queue is investigated where the single server, subject to active failures, primarily attends incoming calls and directs outgoing calls only when idle. The incoming calls arriving at the server follow a Poisson arrival process, while outgoing calls are made in an exponentially distributed time. On finding the server unavailable (either busy or temporarily broken down), incoming calls intrinsically join the virtual orbit from which they re-attempt for service at exponentially distributed time intervals. The system stability condition along with probability generating functions for the joint queue length distribution of the number of calls in the orbit and the state of the server are derived and evaluated numerically in the context of mean system size, server availability, failure frequency and orbit waiting time.

Abstract:The paper deals with Markovian multiserver retrial queuing system with exponential abandonments, two types of arrivals: Fresh calls and Handover calls and waiting places in the service area. This model can be used for analysing a cellular mobile network, where the service area is divided into cells. In this paper, the number of customers in the system and in the orbit form a level-dependent quasi-birth-and-death process, whose stationary distribution is expressed in terms of a sequence of rate matrices. First, we derive the Taylor series expansion for nonzero elements of the rate matrices. Then, by the expansion results, we obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the stationary distribution of both the number of busy channels and the number of customers in the orbit. Furthermore, we present some numerical results to examine the performance of the system.

Abstract:We introduce the \textit{generalized join the shortest queue model with retrials} and two infinite capacity orbit queues. Three independent Poisson streams of jobs, namely a \textit{smart}, and two \textit{dedicated} streams, flow into a single server system, which can hold at most one job. Arriving jobs that find the server occupied are routed to the orbits as follows: Blocked jobs from the \textit{smart} stream are routed to the shortest orbit queue, and in case of a tie, they choose an orbit randomly. Blocked jobs from the \textit{dedicated} streams are routed directly to their orbits. Orbiting jobs retry to connect with the server at different retrial rates, i.e., heterogeneous orbit queues. Applications of such a system are found in the modelling of wireless cooperative networks. We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of the stationary distribution of this model, provided that the system is stable. More precisely, we investigate the conditions under which the tail asymptotic of the minimum orbit queue length is exactly geometric. Moreover, we apply a heuristic asymptotic approach to obtain approximations of the steady-state joint orbit queue-length distribution. Useful numerical examples are presented, and shown that the results obtained through the asymptotic analysis and the heuristic approach agreed.

Abstract:Orbit and retrial queues have been studied extensively in the literature. A key assumption in most of these works is that customers "go to orbit" when they are blocked upon arrival. However, real-life situations exist in which customers opt to go to orbit to efficiently use their orbit time rather than residing dormant at the service station while waiting for their service to be completed. This paper studies such a system, extending the scope of traditional orbit and retrial queues. We consider an M/G/1 queue where customers repeatedly go to orbit while their service remains in progress. That is, if a customer's service is not completed by within a specified "patience time", the customer goes to orbit for a random "orbit time". When the customer orbits, the server continues rendering her/his service. If, on return, the service is already completed, the customer leaves the system. Otherwise, s/he waits for another patience time. This policy is repeated until service completion. We analyze such an intricate system by applying the supplementary variable technique and using Laplace–Stieltjes transforms. Performance measures are derived, and a comparison analysis is provided between various service time distributions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a queueing inventory model with K service nodes located apart making it impossible to know the status of the other service nodes. The primary arrival of customers follows Marked Markovian Arrival Process and the service times are exponentially distributed. If a customer arriving at a node finds the server busy or the inventory level to be zero, he joins a common orbit with infinite capacity. An orbital customer shall choose a service node at random according to some predetermined probability distribution dependent on the orbit size. Each service node is assigned with a continuous review inventory replenished according to an ( s , S ) policy with lead time. This scenario is modeled as a level dependent quasi birth and death process which belongs to the class of asymptotically quasi-Teoplitz Markov chains. Steady-state probabilities and some important performance measures are obtained. A cost function is introduced and employed for computing the optimal values of reorder levels and replenishment rates.

Abstract:We consider an infinite server queue where the arrival and the service rates are both modulated by a stochastic environment governed by an $S$-valued stochastic process $X$ that is ergodic with a limiting measure $\pi\in \mathcal{P}(S)$. Under certain conditions when $X$ is semi-Markovian and satisfies the renewal regenerative property, long-term behavior of the total counts of people in the queue (denoted by $Y:=(Y_{t}:t\ge 0)$) becomes explicit and the limiting measure of $Y$ can be described through a well-studied affine stochastic recurrence equation (SRE) $X\stackrel{d}{=}CX+D,\,\, X\perp\!\!\!\perp (C, D)$. We propose a sampling scheme from that limiting measure with explicit convergence diagnostics. Additionally, one example is presented where the stochastic environment makes the system transient, in absence of a `no-feedback' assumption.

Abstract:In this paper we analyze a tollbooth tandem queueing problem with an infinite number of servers. A customer starts service immediately upon arrival but cannot leave the system before all customers who arrived before him/her have left, i.e. customers depart the system in the same order as they arrive. Distributions of the total number of customers in the system, the number of departure-delayed customers in the system, and the number of customers in service at time t are obtained in closed form. Distributions of the sojourn times and departure delays of customers are also obtained explicitly. Both transient and steady state solutions are derived first for Poisson arrivals, and then extended to cases with batch Poisson and nonstationary Poisson arrival processes. Finally, we report several stochastic ordering results on how system performance measures are affected by arrival and service processes.

Abstract:Designing a reasonable M/G/1 retrial queue system that enhances service efficiency and reduces energy consumption is a challenging issue in Information and Communication Technology systems. This paper presents an M/G/1 retrial queue system incorporating random working vacation (RWV) and improved service efficiency during vacation (ISEV) policies, and examines its optimal queuing strategies. The RWV policy suggests that the server takes random working vacations during reserved idle periods, effectively reducing energy consumption. In contrast, the ISEV policy strives to augment service efficiency during regular working periods by updating, inspecting or maintaining the server on vacations. The system is transformed into a Cauchy problem to investigate its well-posedness and stability, employing operator semigroup theory. Based on the system's stability, steady-state performance measures, such as service efficiency, energy consumption and expected costs, are quantified using the steady-state solution. The paper subsequently demonstrates the existence of optimal queuing strategies that achieve maximum efficiency and minimum expected costs. Finally, two numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the system.

Abstract:We first propose and research a multi-class multi-queue system single server under polling table, which is more proper for modeling token-based communication systems. Then we deduce its common stability condition through analyzing the procedure of message service and message queue in this system. Further, we obtain stability conditions with services, such as limited and gated service, from the common stability condition. Besides, both queue stability and system stability are considered for some systems whose exact analyses have not been obtained yet. The analysis indicates that system stability and queue stability depend on the service styles.

Abstract:A“scheduled” arrival process is one in which the nth arrival is scheduled for time n, but instead occurs at $$n+\xi _n$$ , where the $$\xi _j$$ ’s are i.i.d. We describe here the behavior of a single server queue fed by such traffic in which the processing times are deterministic. A particular focus is on perturbations with Pareto-like tails but with finite mean. We obtain tail approximations for the steady-state workload in both cases where the queue is critically loaded and under a heavy-traffic regime. A key to our approach is our analysis of the tail behavior of a sum of independent Bernoulli random variables with parameters of the form $$p_n\sim c \,n^{-\alpha }$$ as $$n\rightarrow \infty $$ , for $$c>0$$ and $$\alpha >1$$ .
