Abstract:For any closed oriented surface Σg of genus g⩾3, we prove the existence of foliated Σg-bundles over surfaces such that the signatures of the total spaces are non-zero. We can arrange that the total holonomy of the horizontal foliations preserve a prescribed symplectic form ω on the fiber. We relate the cohomology class represented by the transverse symplectic form to a crossed homomorphism Flux:SympΣg→H1(Σg;R) which is an extension of the flux homomorphism Flux:Symp0Σg→H1(Σg;R) from the identity component Symp0Σg to the whole group SympΣg of symplectomorphisms of Σg with respect to the symplectic form ω.

Abstract:Mixed metaphors have been neglected in recent metaphor research. This paper suggests that such neglect is short-sighted. Though mixing is a more complex phenomenon than straight metaphors, the same kinds of reasoning and knowledge structures are required. This paper provides an analysis of both parallel and serial mixed metaphors within the framework of an AI system which is already capable of reasoning about straight metaphorical manifestations and argues that the processes underlying mixing are central to metaphorical meaning. Therefore, any theory of metaphors must be able to account for mixing.

Abstract:In this note we define a subgroup $H^i_{nr,\pi}$ of unramified cohomology group $H^i_{nr}$ of a fibration $\pi:X\to S$. This subgroup can be used efficiently in refined specialization arguments and allows to detect the failure of stable rationality of a variety specializing to $X$. We compute $H^2_{nr, \pi}$ systematically for many cubic surface bundles $\pi:X\to S$ over a smooth projective rational surface over an algebraically closed field: we give a combinatorial formula in terms of components of the discriminant divisor of $\pi$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a connected, compact complex manifold and $S\subset X$ a separating real hypersurface, so that $X$ decomposes as a union of compact complex manifolds with boundary $\bar X^\pm$. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be the moduli space of $S$-framed holomorphic bundles, i.e. of pairs $(E,\theta)$ of fixed topological type consisting of a holomorphic bundle $E$ on $X$ and a trivialization $\theta$ - belonging to a fixed Hölder regularity class $\mathcal{C}^{\kappa+1}$ - of its restriction to $S$. The restrictions to $\bar X^\pm$ of an $S$-framed holomorphic bundle $(E,\theta)$ are boundary framed formally holomorphic bundles $(E^\pm,\theta^\pm)$ which induce, via $\theta^\pm$, the same tangential Cauchy-Riemann operators on the trivial bundle on $S$, so one obtains a natural map from $\mathcal{M}$ into the fiber product $\mathcal{M}^-\times_\mathcal{C}\mathcal{M}^+$ over the space $\mathcal{C}$ of Cauchy-Riemann operators on the trivial bundle on $S$. Our main result states: this map is a homeomorphism for $\kappa\in (0,\infty]\setminus\mathbb{N}$. The proof is based on a gluing principle for formally holomorphic bundles along a real hypersurface. This principle can also be used to give a complex geometric interpretation of the space of solutions of a large class of Riemann-Hilbert type problems. The results generalize in two directions: first one can replace the decomposition associated with a separating hypersurface by the the manifold with boundary $\widehat X_S$ obtained by cutting $X$ along any oriented hypersurface $S$. Second one can consider principal $G$ bundles for an arbitrary complex Lie group $G$. We give explicit examples of moduli spaces of (boundary) framed holomorphic bundles and explicit formulae for the homeomorphisms provided by the general results.

Abstract:The Globus Data Grid architecture provides a scalable infrastructure for the management of storage resources and data that are distributed across Grid environments. These services are designed to support a variety of scientific applications, ranging from high-energy physics to computational genomics, that require access to large amounts of data (terabytes or even petabytes) with varied quality of service requirements. By layering on a set of core services, such as data transport, security, and replica cataloging, one can construct various higher-level services. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of a high-level replica selection service that uses information regarding replica location and user preferences to guide selection from among storage replica alternatives. We first present a basic replica selection service design, then show how dynamic information collected using Globus information service capabilities concerning storage system properties can help improve and optimize the selection process. We demonstrate the use of Condor's ClassAds resource description and matchmaking mechanism as an efficient tool for representing and matching storage resource capabilities and policies against application requirements.

Abstract:In this article, we produce Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formulas for cohomology theories that are not oriented in the classical sense. We then specialize to the case of cohomology theories that admit a so-called symplectic orientation and show how to compute the relevant Todd classes in that situation. At the end of the article, we illustrate our methods on the Borel character linking Hermitian K-theory and rational MW-motivic cohomology.

Abstract:We apply Zhang's almost Kähler Nakai-Moishezon theorem and Li-Zhang's comparison of $J$-symplectic cones to establish a stability result for the symplectomorphism group of a rational $4$-manifold $M$ with Euler number up to $12$. As a corollary, we also derive a stability result for the space of embedded symplectic balls in $M$. A noteworthy feature of our approach is that we systematically explore various spaces and groups associated to a symplectic cohomology class $u$ rather than with a single symplectic form $\omega$. To this end, we prove a weaker version of the tamed $J$-inflation procedures of D. McDuff and O. Buse that fixes a gap in their original formulations.

Abstract:This paper, in particular, gives a complete proof of the direct integral version of the Whittaker Plancherel Theorem. The main emphasis is on certain Hilbert and Fréchet vector bundles over a space that has a submersion onto the tempered dual. This allows for an approach to the Plancherel Theorems (both for L^2 and the Whittaker case) that is representation theoretic, bypasses the need for Harish-Chandra's Eisenstein Integrals and yields a proof the direct integral decompositions without invoking the abstract theory.

Abstract:We introduce a simple procedure to integrate differential forms with arbitrary holomorphic poles on Riemann surfaces. It gives rise to an intrinsic regularization of such singular integrals in terms of the underlying conformal geometry. Applied to products of Riemann surfaces, this regularization scheme establishes an analytic theory for integrals over configuration spaces, including Feynman graph integrals arising from two dimensional chiral quantum field theories. Specializing to elliptic curves, we show such regularized graph integrals are almost-holomorphic modular forms that geometrically provide modular completions of the corresponding ordered A-cycle integrals.
Weak Brill-Noether on Abelian Surfaces

Abstract:We study the cohomology of a general stable sheaf on an abelian surface. We say that a moduli space satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf has at most one non-zero cohomology group. Let $(X,H)$ be a polarized abelian surface and let $\mathbf{v}=(r,\xi,a)$ be a Mukai vector on $X$ with $\mathbf{v}^2\ge 0$,$r>0$, and $\xi\cdot H>0$. We show that if $\rho(X)=1$ or $\rho(X)=2$ and $X$ contains an elliptic curve, then all the moduli spaces $M_{X,H}(\mathbf{v})$ satisfy weak Brill-Noether. Conversely, if $\rho(X)>2$ or $\rho(X)=2$ and $X$ does not contain an elliptic curve, we show that there are infinitely many moduli spaces $M_{X,H}(\mathbf{v})$ that fail weak Brill-Noether. As a consequence, we classify Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on abelian surfaces.

On Gauss-Bonnet type formulas for mappings between surfaces with boundary and their applications

Abstract:We define singular points of the first kind and singular points of the second kind as singular points of mappings between surfaces. Typical examples of these singular points are fold singular points and cusp singular points, respectively. We can construct coherent tangent bundles, which are natural intrinsic formulations of wave fronts, by using mappings between surfaces. It is known that two types of Gauss-Bonnet type formulas hold for coherent tangent bundles over surfaces (possibly with boundary). Hence, we obtain two Gauss-Bonnet type formulas for mappings between surfaces (possibly with boundary). By applying these Gauss-Bonnet type formulas, we prove the Levine formula that relates the rotation indices to the Euler characteristic, and the Quine-Fukuda-Ishikawa formula that relates the mapping degree to the Euler characteristic and the number of singular points.

Abstract:We prove that the integral of a certain Riesz-type kernel over $(n-1)$-rectifiable sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is constant, from which a formula for surface measure immediately follows. Geometric interpretations are given, and the solution to a geometric variational problem characterizing convex domains follows as a corollary, strengthening a recent inequality of Steinerberger.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a hyperbolic oriented Riemann surface of finite type. The main purpose of this paper is to show that non-trivial geometric intersection between closed curves on $S$ is detected by some symplectic submodules they naturally determine in the homology groups of the compactifications of unramified $p$-coverings of $S$, for $p\geq 2$ a fixed prime. In particular, this gives a characterization of simple closed curves on $S$ in terms of homology groups of $p$-coverings. We then define a $p$-adic Reidemeister pairing on the fundamental group of $S$ and show that the free homotopy classes of two loops have trivial geometric intersection if and only if they are orthogonal with respect to this pairing. As an application, we give a geometric argument to prove that oriented surface groups are conjugacy $p$-separable (a combinatorial proof of this fact was recentely given by Paris).

On invariants of foliated sphere bundles

Abstract:Morita showed that for each power of the Euler class, there are examples of flat $\mathbb{S}^1$-bundles for which the power of the Euler class does not vanish. Haefliger asked if the same holds for flat odd-dimensional sphere bundles. In this paper, for a manifold $M$ with a free torus action, we prove that certain $M$-bundles are cobordant to a flat $M$-bundle and as a consequence, we answer Haefliger's question. We show that the powers of the Euler class and Pontryagin classes $p_i$ for $i\leq n-1$ are all non-trivial in $H^*(\text{BDiff}^{\delta}_+(\mathbb{S}^{2n-1});\mathbb{Q})$. In the appendix, Nils Prigge corrects a claim by Haefliger about the vanishing of certain classes in the smooth group cohomology of $\text{Diff}_+(\mathbb{S}^3)$.

Abstract:For every finite collection of curves on a surface, we define an associated (semi-)norm on the first homology group of the surface. The unit ball of the dual norm is the convex hull of its integer points. We give an interpretation of these points in terms of certain coorientations of the original collection of curves. Our main result is a classification statement: when the surface has constant curvature and the curves are geodesics, integer points in the interior of the dual unit ball classify isotopy classes of Birkhoff cross sections for the geodesic flow (on the unit tangent bundle to the surface) whose boundary is the symmetric lift of the collection of geodesics. Birkhoff cross sections in particular yield open-book decompositions of the unit tangent bundle.

Abstract:Using adiabatic limits of Eta invariants, Rho invariants of the total space of a fiber bundle are investigated. One concern is to formulate the aspects of local index theory for families of Dirac operator in terms of the odd signature operator, and place known results in a context which permits the treatment of Rho invariants. The main focus is, however, to use this to compute Rho invariants for explicit classes of fibered 3-manifolds. More precisely, we consider $\U(1)$-Rho invariants of principal $S^1$-bundles over closed, oriented surfaces as well as mapping tori with torus fiber. Hyperbolic monodromy maps deserve particular attention. When discussing them, the logarithm of a generalized Dedekind Eta function naturally appears. An explicit formula for $\U(1)$-Rho invariants is then deduced from a transformation formula for these Dedekind Eta functions.
