Abstract:Graphene has attracted a great interest in material science due to its novel electronic structrues. Recently, magnetism discovered in graphene based systems opens the possibility of their spintronics application. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the magnetic behaviors and electronic structures of graphene systems, including 2-dimensional graphene, 1-dimensional graphene nanoribbons, and 0-dimensional graphene nanoclusters. Theoretical research suggests that such metal-free magnetism mainly comes from the localized states or edges states. By applying external electric field, or by chemical modification, we can turn the zigzag nanoribbon systems to half metal, thus obtain a perfect spin filter.

The uniqueness of physical and chemical natures of graphene: their coherence and conflicts

Abstract:Molecular-crystalline duality of graphene ensures a tight alliance of its physical and chemical natures, each of which is unique in its own way. The paper examines the physical-chemical harmony and/or confrontation in terms of the molecular theory of graphene. Chemistry that is consistent with graphene physics expectations involves: small mass of carbon atoms, which provides a lightweight material; sp2 configuration of the atoms valence electrons, ensuring a flat 2D structure of condensed benzenoid units; high strength of C-C valence bonds responsible for exclusive mechanical strength. Chemistry that is in conflict with graphene physics expectations covers: radical character of graphene material; collective character of electronic system of graphene, preventing from localization of its response on any external impact; the molecular nature and topochemical character of graphene mechanics; the molecular nature of graphene magnetism. Each of the properties is a direct consequence of the odd electron correlation, on one hand, and ensures a high instability of graphene material, on the other. Electron correlation inhibition by deposition of graphene monolayers on substrates is seen as a promising way to solve the problem.

Abstract:One of the most important developments in condensed matter physics in recent years has been the discovery and characterization of graphene. A two-dimensional layer of Carbon arranged in a hexagonal lattice, graphene exhibits many interesting electronic properties, most notably that the low energy excitations behave as massless Dirac fermions. These excitations interact strongly via the Coulomb interaction and thus non-perturbative methods are necessary. Using methods borrowed from lattice QCD, we study the graphene effective theory in the presence of an external magnetic field. Graphene, along with other $(2+1)$-dimensional field theories, has been predicted to undergo spontaneous breaking of flavor symmetry including the formation of a gap as a result of the external magnetic field. This phenomenon is known as magnetic catalysis. Our study investigates magnetic catalysis using a fully non-perturbative approach.

Abstract:Finite flux of the (time-reversal-symmetric) pseudo-magnetic field, which represents the effect of wrinkling of the graphene sheet for example, is shown to be a catalyst for spontaneous breaking of the time-reversal symmetry of Dirac fermions in two dimensions. Possible experimental consequences of this effect for graphene are discussed.

Dynamical symmetry breaking, magnetization and induced charge in graphene: Interplay between magnetic and pseudomagnetic fields

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the two competing effects of strains and magnetic fields in single-layer graphene to explore its impact on various phenomena of quantum field theory, such as induced charge density, magnetic catalysis, symmetry breaking, dynamical mass generation and magnetization. We show that the interplay between strains and magnetic fields produces not only a breaking of chiral symmetry, as it happens in QED$_{2+1}$, but also parity and time-reversal symmetry breaking. The last two symmetry breakings are related to the dynamical generation of a Haldane mass term. We find that it is possible to modify the magnetization and the dynamical mass independently for each valley, by strain and varying the external magnetic field. Furthermore, we discover that the presence of a non-zero pseudomagnetic field, unlike the magnetic one, allows us to observe an induced "vacuum" charge and a parity anomaly in strained graphene. Finally, because the combined effect of real and pseudomagnetic fields produces an induced valley polarization, the results presented here may provide new tools to design valleytronic devices.

Abstract:The paper presents the author view on spin-rooted properties of graphene supported by numerous experimental and calculation evidences. Dirac fermions of crystalline graphene and local spins of graphene molecules are suggested to meet a strict demand - different orbitals for different spins- which leads to a large spectrum of effects caused by spin polarization of electronic states. The consequent topological non-triviality, making graphene topological insulator, and local spins, imaging graphene chemical activity, are proposed to discuss such peculiar properties of graphene as high temperature ferromagnetism and outstanding chemical behavior. The connection of these new findings with difficulties met at attempting to convert semimetal graphene into semiconductor one is discussed.

Abstract:The growing interest in carbon-based spintronics has stimulated a number of recent theoretical studies on the RKKY interaction in graphene, with the aim of determining the most energetically favourable alignments between embedded magnetic moments. The RKKY interaction in undoped graphene decays faster than expected for conventional two-dimensional materials and recent studies suggest that the adsorption configurations favoured by many transition-metal impurities may lead to even shorter ranged decays and possible sign-changing oscillations. Here we show that these features emerge in a mathematically transparent manner when the symmetry of the configurations is included in the calculation. Furthermore, we show that by breaking the symmetry of the graphene lattice, via uniaxial strain, the decay rate, and hence the range, of the RKKY interaction can be significantly altered. Our results suggest that magnetic interactions between adsorbed impurities in graphene can be manipulated by careful strain engineering of such systems.

Abstract:The possibility of utilizing the rich spin-dependent properties of graphene has attracted much attention in the pursuit of spintronics advances. The promise of high-speed and low-energy-consumption devices motivates the search for layered structures that stabilize chiral spin textures such as topologically protected skyrmions. Here we demonstrate that chiral spin textures are induced at graphene/ferromagnetic metal interfaces. Graphene is a weak spin-orbit coupling material and is generally not expected to induce a sufficient Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to affect magnetic chirality. We demonstrate that indeed graphene does induce a type of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction due to the Rashba effect. First-principles calculations and experiments using spin-polarized electron microscopy show that this graphene-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can have a similar magnitude to that at interfaces with heavy metals. This work paves a path towards two-dimensional-material-based spin-orbitronics.

Abstract:Magnetism in graphene is an emerging field that has received much theoretical attention. In particular, there have been exciting predictions for induced magnetism through proximity to a ferromagnetic insulator as well as through localized dopants and defects. Here, the authors discuss their experimental work using molecular beam epitaxy to modify the surface of graphene and induce novel spin-dependent phenomena. First, they investigate the epitaxial growth of the ferromagnetic insulator EuO on graphene and discuss possible scenarios for realizing exchange splitting and exchange fields by ferromagnetic insulators. Second, they investigate the properties of magnetic moments in graphene originating from localized pz-orbital defects (i.e., adsorbed hydrogen atoms). The behavior of these magnetic moments is studied using nonlocal spin transport to directly probe the spin-degree of freedom of the defect-induced states. They also report the presence of enhanced electron g-factors caused by the exchange fields present in the system. Importantly, the exchange field is found to be highly gate dependent, with decreasing g-factors with increasing carrier densities.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we explore the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene nanomesh (GNM), a regular network of large vacancies, produced either by lithography or nanoimprint. When removing an equal number of A and B sites of the graphene bipartite lattice, the nanomesh made mostly of zigzag (armchair) -type edges exhibit antiferromagnetic (spin unpolarized) states. In contrast, in situations of sublattice symmetry breaking, stable ferri(o)magnetic states are obtained. For hydrogen-passivated nanomesh, the formation energy is dramatically decreased, and ground state is found to strongly depend on the vacancies shape and size. For triangular-shaped holes, the obtained net magnetic moments increase with the number difference of removed A and B sites in agreement with Lieb's theorem for even A + B. For odd A + B triangular meshes and all cases of nontriangular nanomeshes, including the one with even A + B, Lieb's theorem does not hold anymore, which can be partially attributed to the introduction of armchair edges. In addition, large triangular-shaped GNMs could be as robust as nontriangular GNMs, providing a possible solution to overcome one of the crucial challenges for the sp magnetism. Finally, significant exchange-splitting values as large as similar to 0.5 eV can be obtained for highly asymmetric structures evidencing the potential of GNM for room-temperature carbon-based spintronics. These results demonstrate that a turn from zero-dimensional graphene nanoflakes throughout one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges to GNM breaks localization of unpaired electrons and provides deviation from the rules based on Lieb's theorem. Such delocalization of the electrons leads the switch of the ground state of a system from an antiferromagnetic narrow gap insulator discussed for graphene nanoribons to a ferromagnetic or nonmagnetic metal.
Magnetism in Disordered Graphene and Irradiated Graphite

Abstract:The magnetic properties of disordered graphene and irradiated graphite are systematically studied using a combination of mean-field Hubbard model and first-principles calculations. By considering large-scale disordered models of graphene, I conclude that only single-atom defects can induce ferromagnetism in graphene-based materials. The preserved stacking order of graphene layers is shown to be another necessary condition for achieving a finite net magnetic moment of irradiated graphite. Ab initio calculations of hydrogen binding and diffusion and of interstitial-vacancy recombination further confirm the crucial role of stacking order in $\pi$-electron ferromagnetism of proton-bombarded graphite.

Abstract:Charge carriers in magic-angle graphene come in eight flavours described by a combination of their spin, valley and sublattice polarizations. When inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken, this 'flavour' degeneracy can be lifted, and their corresponding bands can be sequentially filled. Due to their non-trivial band topology and Berry curvature, each band is classified by a topological Chern number C , leading to quantum anomalous Hall and Chern insulator states. Using a scanning superconducting quantum interference device on a tip, we image the nanoscale equilibrium orbital magnetism induced by the Berry curvature, the polarity of which is governed by C , and detect its two constituent components associated with the drift and self-rotation of the electronic wavepackets. At integer filling v = 1, we observe a zero-field Chern insulator, which—rather than being described by a global topologically invariant C —forms a mosaic of microscopic patches of C = −1, 0 or 1. On further filling, we find a first-order phase transition due to the recondensation of electrons from valley K to K′, leading to irreversible flips of the local Chern number and magnetization, as well as to the formation of valley domain walls, giving rise to hysteretic anomalous Hall resistance.

Orbital Magnetism of Graphene Nanostructures: Bulk and Confinement Effects

Abstract:We consider the orbital magnetic properties of non-interacting charge carriers in graphene-based nanostructures in the low-energy regime. The magnetic response of such systems results both, frombulk contributions and from confinement effects that can be particularly strong in ballistic quantum dots. First we provide a comprehensive study of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ of bulk graphene in a magnetic field for the different regimes arising from the relative magnitudes of the energy scales involved, i.e. temperature, Landau level spacing and chemical potential. We show that for finite temperature or chemical potential, $\chi$ is not divergent although the diamagnetic contribution $\chi_{0}$ from the filled valance band exhibits the well-known $-B^{-1/2}$ dependence. We further derive oscillatory modulations of $\chi$, corresponding to de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of conventional two-dimensional electron gases. These oscillations can be large in graphene, thereby compensating the diamagnetic contribution $\chi_{0}$ and yielding a net paramagnetic susceptibility for certain energy and magnetic field regimes. Second, we predict and analyze corresponding strong, confinement-induced susceptibility oscillations in graphene-based quantum dots with amplitudes distincly exceeding the corresponding bulk susceptibility. Within a semiclassical approach we derive generic expressions for orbital magnetism of graphene quantum dots with regular classical dynamics. Graphene-specific features can be traced back to pseudospin interference along the underlying periodic orbits. We demonstrate the quality of the semiclassical approximation by comparison with quantum mechanical results for two exemplary mesoscopic systems, a graphene disk with infinite mass-type edges and a rectangular graphene structure with armchair and zigzag edges, using numerical tight-binding calculations in the latter case.

Unconventional Metallic Magnetism: Non-analyticity and Sign-changing Behavior of Orbital Magnetization in ABC Trilayer Graphene

Abstract:We study an unique form of metallic ferromagnetism in which orbital moments surpasses the role of spin moments in shaping the overall magnetization. This system emerges naturally upon doping a topologically non-trivial Chern band in the recently identified quarter metal phase of rhombohedral trilayer graphene. Our comprehensive scan of the density-interlayer potential parameter space reveals an unexpected landscape of orbital magnetization marked by two sign changes and a line of singularities. The sign change originates from an intense Berry curvature concentrated close to the band-edge, and the singularity arises from a topological Lifshitz transition that transform a simply connected Fermi sea into an annular Fermi sea. Importantly, these variations occur while the groundstate order-parameter (i.e. valley and spin polarization) remains unchanged. This unconventional relationship between the order parameter and magnetization markedly contrasts traditional spin ferromagnets, where spin magnetization is simply proportional to the groundstate spin polarization via the gyromagnetic ratio. We compute energy and magnetization curves as functions of collective valley rotation to shed light on magnetization dynamics and to expand the Stoner-Wohlfarth magnetization reversal model. We provide predictions on the magnetic coercive field that can be readily tested in experiments. Our results challenge established perceptions of magnetism, emphasising the important role of orbital moments in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, and in turn, expand our understanding and potential manipulation of magnetic behaviors in these systems.

Abstract:Ferromagnetic graphene is particularly promising for spintronics devices applications, in which RudermanKittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction is widely considered to play the crucial role in the magnetic coupling between the adjacent localized spins. Recent theoretical studies show that integrating electron transfer effect into the typical RKKY interaction can effectively tune the decay rate and the oscillation behavior. However, the real system for studying such behavior remains scarce. Here, by combining magnetization measurements and first-principles calculations, we show that semi-ionic F (s-F)-doped graphene (s-FG) exhibits peculiar s-F- concentration-dependent magnetism and is a real platform for such study. Especially, with the decrease of the s-F concentration of s-FG, its ferromagnetic T C exhibits an unusual increase. First-principles calculations show that the magnetism of s-FG (i) can be understood by the picture of RKKY behavior that the localized spins are mainly located on s-F adatoms accompanied by partial spin polarization of nearby carbon atoms, while (ii) it deviates the typical sublattice-dependent RKKY behavior presented as a nonmagnetic or antiferromagnetic state for localized spins on the same sublattice for some s-FG structures. The peculiar behavior is proposed to be related to the electron transfer effect, which can be evidenced by the good consistency of magnetism of s-FG by an effective Anderson impurity model.

Abstract:The chapter is devoted to chemical uniqueness of graphene. In view of molecular theory, the latter is a consequence of benzenoid packing of carbon atoms, based on three neighbors to each carbon atom leaving the atom fourth valence electron (the odd one) on its own. Due to rather large C-C distances, the odd electrons of graphene molecules are correlated whereupon the molecules are radicalized and molecular chemistry of graphene is the chemistry of dangling bonds. The chapter presents the description of the molecular-theory-dangling-bond view on graphene molecule hydrogenation and oxidation. Emergent Fermion Dynamical Symmetry for Monolayer Graphene in a Strong Magnetic Field

Abstract:We review the physics of monolayer graphene in a strong magnetic field, with emphasis on highly collective states that emerge from the weakly interacting system because of correlations (emergent states). After reviewing the general properties of graphene and of electrons in a magnetic field, we give a brief introduction to the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in a 2D electron gas as foundation to show that monolayer graphene in a magnetic field exhibits both effects, but with properties modified by the influence of the graphene crystal. After giving an introduction to standard methods of dealing with emergent states for this system, we show that an SO(8) fermion dynamical symmetry governs the emergent degrees of freedom and that the algebraic and group properties of the dynamical symmetry provide a new view of strongly correlated states observed in monolayer graphene subject to a strong magnetic field.

Magnetism in the Dilute Electron Gas of Rhombohedral Multilayer Graphene

Abstract:Lightly-doped rhombohedral multilayer graphene has recently emerged as one of the most promising material platforms for exploring electronic phases driven by strong Coulomb interactions and non-trivial band topology. This review highlights recent advancements in experimental techniques that deepen our understanding of the electronic properties of these systems, especially through the application of weak-field magnetic oscillations for studying phase transitions and Fermiology. Theoretically, we advocate modeling these systems using an electron gas framework, influenced primarily by two major energy scales: the long-range Coulomb potential and band energy. The interplay between these energies drives transitions between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic states, while smaller energy scales like spin-orbit coupling and sublattice-valley-dependent interactions at the atomic lattice scale shape the (magnetic anisotropic energy) differences between distinct symmetry-broken states. We provide first-principles estimates of lattice-scale coupling constants for Bernal bilayer graphene under strong displacement field, identifying the on-site inter-valley scattering repulsion, with a strength of $g_{\perp \perp}=269\text{meV nm}^2$ as the most significant short-range interaction. The mean-field phase diagram is analyzed and compared with experimental phase diagrams. New results on spin and valley paramagnons are presented, highlighting enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility at finite wavevectors and predicting valley and spin density-wave instabilities. The interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, particularly under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, is critically assessed. The review concludes with a summary of key findings and potential directions for future research.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots with the high edge-to-area ratio have possibly substantial spin polarized edge states, which theoretically can generate fascinating magnetic properties. The magnetism of well-defined graphene quantum dots is relevant with both fundamental physics and potential applications in spintronics. In this article, we report the intrinsic magnetism of graphene quantum dots. Our graphene quantum dots with the average diameter of ca. 2.04 nm show the purely Curie-like paramagnetism with the local moment of 1.2 μ B at 2 K. It is proposed that the magnetic moment of graphene quantum dots may mainly origin from the residual zigzag edges passivated by hydroxyl groups. The ratio of nonmagnetic graphene quantum dots is approximately 6/7, with most of the magnetic edge states suppressed by edge defects and/or edge reconstruction arising from the high-temperature annealing. Our study experimentally unveils the intrinsic magnetism of graphene quantum dots.
