Abstract:We report the first photoemission study of Fe1+xTe - the host compound of the newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Our results reveal a pair of nearly electron- hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket is observed at the "X"-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi surface nesting instability associated with Q= pi(1/2, 1/2) is observed. Our results collectively reveal that the Fe1+xTe series is dramatically different from the undoped phases of the high Tc pnictides and likely harbor unusual mechanism for superconductivity and quantum magnetic order.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the Fermi - surface topological structure and low - energy quasiparticle structure of the iron - based superconductor Fe\(_{1+x}\)Te in order to understand its magnetically ordered state and superconducting mechanism. Specifically: 1. **Fermi - surface topological structure**: Through angle - resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) research, it is revealed that the Fermi - surface of Fe\(_{1+x}\)Te consists of a pair of Fermi pockets that are almost electron - hole compensated, and an additional hole pocket is observed at the "X" point in the Brillouin zone. 2. **Magnetically ordered state**: It is found that there is no spin - density - wave (SDW) gap in Fe\(_{1+x}\)Te, which is inconsistent with theoretical predictions. Instead, the observed Fermi - surface topological structure and band - like structure are consistent with the magnetic structure state of long - range local - moment order. 3. **Fermi - surface nesting instability**: No Fermi - surface nesting instability related to the magnetic - order vector \(\mathbf{Q} = (\pi/2, \pi/2)\) is observed. This indicates that the Fe\(_{1+x}\)Te series of compounds are significantly different from undoped iron - based superconductors (such as iron arsenides) and may contain new mechanisms for superconductivity and quantum magnetism. 4. **Electron - hole compensation**: The experimental results show that the electron and hole carrier densities in the material are almost equal, indicating that the material is a half - metal close to electron - hole compensation. In summary, through detailed ARPES experiments, this paper reveals the unique Fermi - surface topological structure and magnetically ordered state of Fe\(_{1+x}\)Te, challenges the existing theoretical models, and provides a new perspective for understanding the superconducting mechanism of iron - based superconductors.
