By a weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-fold $X$ we mean a projective one with at worst terminal singularities on which $-K_X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier, nef and big. For weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds, we prove that $\varphi - m$ is birational onto its image for all $m \geq 97$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linear systems $|-mK_X|$ on Fano varieties $X$ with klt singularities. In a given dimension $d$, we prove $|-mK_X|$ is non-empty and contains an element with good singularities for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$; if in addition $X$ is $\epsilon$-lc for some $\epsilon>0$, then we show that we can choose $m$ depending only on $d$ and $\epsilon$ so that $|-mK_X|$ defines a birational map. Further, we prove Shokurov's conjecture on boundedness of complements, and show that certain classes of Fano varieties form bounded families.

Abstract:By a canonical (resp. terminal) weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold we mean a normal projective one with at worst canonical (resp. terminal) singularities on which the anti-canonical divisor is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier, nef and big. For a canonical weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $V$, we show that there exists a terminal weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $X$, being birational to $V$, such that the $m$-th anti-canonical map defined by $|-mK_{X}|$ is birational for all $m\geq 52$. As an intermediate result, we show that for any $K$-Mori fiber space $Y$ of a canonical weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold, the $m$-th anti-canonical map defined by $|-mK_{Y}|$ is birational for all $m\geq 52$.

Abstract:This note mainly studies the generic finiteness of \phi_m of a complex projective 3-fold of general type. A new result on the classification to bicanonical pencil for Gorenstein 3-folds is attached in the last section.

Abstract:For nonsingular projective 4-folds V of general type with plurigenus $P_{m_0}(V) \geq 2$ for some positive integer $m_0$, we show that $\varphi_{m}$ is birational onto its image for all integers $m \geq 76m_0+77$ and the canonical volume Vol(V) has the lower bound $\frac{1}{1680m_0(m_0+1)^3}$. This improves earlier results of Meng Chen.

Abstract: In this article we present a 3-dimensional analogue of a well-known theorem of E. Bombieri (in 1973) which characterizes the bi-canonical birationality of surfaces of general type. Let $X$ be a projective minimal 3-fold of general type with $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal singularities and the geometric genus $p_g(X)\ge 5$. We show that the 4-canonical map $\phi_4$ is {\it not} birational onto its image if and only if $X$ is birationally fibred by a family $\mathscr{C}$ of irreducible curves of geometric genus 2 with $K_X\cdot C_0=1$ where $C_0$ is a general irreducible member in $\mathscr{C}$.

Abstract:We study a family of birational maps of smooth affine quadric 3-folds, {over the complex numbers}, of the form $x_1x_4-x_2x_3=$ constant, which seems to have some (among many others) interesting/unexpected characters: a) they are cohomologically hyperbolic, b) their second dynamical degree is an algebraic number but not an algebraic integer, and c) the logarithmic growth of their periodic points is strictly smaller than their algebraic entropy. These maps are restrictions of a polynomial map on $\mathbb{C}^4$ preserving each of the quadrics. The study in this paper is a mixture of rigorous and experimental ones, where for the experimental study we rely on Bertini which is a reliable and fast software for expensive numerical calculations in complex algebraic geometry.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate effectivity problems of pluricanonical systems on varieties of general type in positive characteristic. In practice, we will consider a sub-linear system $|S^0_{-}(X, K_X + nK_X)| \subseteq |H^0(X, K_X +nK_X)|$ generated by certain Frobenius stable sections, and prove that for a minimal terminal threefold $X$ of general type with either $q(X)>0$ or Gorenstein singularities, if $n\geq 28$ then $|S^0_{-}(X, K_X + nK_X)| \neq \emptyset$; if $n\geq 42$ then the linear system $|S^0_{-}(X, K_X + nK_X)|$ defines a birational map.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).

Abstract:This paper aims to improve a theorem of Janos Kollar. For a given Complex projective threefold X of general type, suppose the plurigenus p_k(X)\ge 2, Kollar proved that the (11k+5)-canonical map is birational. Here we show that either the (7k+3)-canonical map or the (7k+5)-canonical map is birational and that the m-canonical map is stably birational for m\ge 13k+6. If P_k(X)\ge 3, then the m-canonical map is stably birational for m\ge 10k+8. In particular, the 12-canonical map is birational when p_g(X)\ge 2 and the 11-canonical map is birational when p_g(X)\ge 3.
