Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We study the differential geometric consequences of our previous result on the existence of fat triangulations, in conjunction with a result of Cheeger, Müller and Schrader, regarding the convergence of Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of piecewise-flat approximations of smooth Riemannian manifolds. A further application to the existence of quasiconformal mappings between manifolds, as well as an extension of the triangulation result to the case of almost Riemannian manifolds, are also given. In addition, the notion of fatness of triangulations and its relation to metric curvature and to excess is explored. Moreover, applications of the main results, and in particular a purely metric approach to Regge calculus, are also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide an alternative appraoch to an expectaion of Fässler et al [J. Geom. Anal. 2016] by showing that a metrically quasiregular mapping between two equiregular subRiemannian manifolds of homogeneous dimension $Q\geq 2$ has a negligible branch set. One main new ingredient is to develop a suitable extension of the generalized Pansu differentiability theory, in spirit of earlier works by Margulis-Mostow, Karmanova and Vodopyanov. Another new ingredient is to apply the theory of Sobolev spaces based on upper gradients developed by Heinonen, Koskela, Shanmugalingam and Tyson to establish the necessary analytic foundations.

Abstract:We are interested in the geometry of the group $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ of diffeomorphisms preserving a contact form $\theta$ on a manifold $M$. We define a Riemannian metric on $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, compute the corresponding geodesic equation, and show that solutions exist for all time and depend smoothly on initial conditions. In certain special cases (such as on the 3-sphere), the geodesic equation is a simplified version of the quasigeostrophic equation, so we obtain a new geodesic interpretation of this geophysical system. We also show that the genuine quasigeostrophic equation on $S^2$ can be obtained as an Euler-Arnold equation on a one-dimensional central extension of $T_{\id}\mathcal{D}_q(M)$, and that our global existence result extends to this case. If $E$ is the Reeb field of $\theta$ and $\mu$ is the volume form, assumed compatible in the sense that $\text{div} E=0$, we show that $\mathcal{D}_q(M)$ is a smooth submanifold of $\mathcal{D}_{E,\mu}(M)$, the space of diffeomorphisms preserving the vector field $E$ and the volume form $\mu$, in the sense of $H^s$ Sobolev completions. The latter manifold is related to symmetric motion of ideal fluids. We further prove that the corresponding geodesic equations and projections are $C^{\infty}$ objects in the Sobolev topology.
Deformation quantization and intrinsic noncommutative differential geometry

Abstract:We provide an intrinsic formulation of the noncommutative differential geometry developed earlier by Chaichian, Tureanu, R. B. Zhang and the second author. This yields geometric definitions of covariant derivatives of noncommutative metrics and curvatures, as well as the noncommutative version of the first and the second Bianchi identities. Moreover, if a noncommutative metric and chiral coefficients satisfy certain conditions which hold automatically for quantum fluctuations given by isometric embedding, we prove that the two noncommutative Ricci curvatures are essentially equivalent. For (pseudo-) Riemannian metrics given by certain type of spherically symmetric isometric embedding, we compute their quantum fluctuations and curvatures. We find that they have closed forms, which indicates that the quantization of gravity is renormalizable in this case. Finally, we define quasi-connections and their curvatures with respect to general associative star products constructed by Kontsevich on Poisson manifolds. As these star products are not compatible with the Leibniz rule, we can only prove the first Bianchi identity.

Abstract:Abstract Let X X be a simple normal crossing (SNC) compact complex surface with trivial canonical bundle which includes triple intersections. We prove that if X X is d d -semistable, then there exists a family of smoothings in a differential geometric sense. This can be interpreted as a differential geometric analogue of the smoothability results due to Friedman, Kawamata-Namikawa, Felten-Filip-Ruddat, Chan-Leung-Ma, and others in algebraic geometry. The proof is based on an explicit construction of local smoothings around the singular locus of X X , and the first author’s existence result of holomorphic volume forms on global smoothings of X X . In particular, these volume forms are given as solutions of a nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation. As an application, we provide several examples of d d -semistable SNC complex surfaces with trivial canonical bundle including double curves, which are smoothable to complex tori, primary Kodaira surfaces, and K 3 K3 surfaces. We also provide several examples of such complex surfaces including triple points, which are smoothable to K 3 K3 surfaces.

Abstract:The famous theorems of Cartan, related to the axiom of $r$-planes, and Leung-Nomizu about the axiom of $r$-spheres were extended to Kähler geometry by several authors. In this paper we replace the strong notions of totally geodesic submanifolds ($r$-planes) and extrinsic spheres ($r$-spheres) by a wider class of special isometric immersions such that theorems of type "axioms of $r$-special submanifolds" could hold. We verify also that there are plenty of special submanifolds in real and complex space forms and, in the codimension one case, in Einstein manifolds.

Quasimorphisms on nonorientable surface diffeomorphism groups

Abstract:Bowden, Hensel, and Webb constructed infinitely many quasimorphisms on the diffeomorphism groups of orientable surfaces. In this paper, we extend their result to nonorientable surfaces. Namely, we prove that the space of nontrivial quasimorphisms $\widetilde{QH}(\mathrm{Diff}_0(N_g))$ on the identity component of the diffeomorphism group $\mathrm{Diff}_0(N_g)$ on a closed nonorientable surface $N_g$ of genus $g\geq 3$ is infinite-dimensional. As a corollary, we obtain the unboundedness of the commutator length and the fragmentation length on $\mathrm{Diff}_0(N_g)$.

Abstract:Let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface in the (m+1)-dimensional unit sphere S m+1 without umbilics. Four basic invariants of x under the Möbius transformation group in S m+1 are a Riemannian metric g called Möbius metric, a 1-form Φ called Möbius form, a symmetric (0,2) tensor A called Blaschke tensor and symmetric (0,2) tensor B called Möbius second fundamental form. In this paper, we prove the following classification theorem: let $x:{\bf M}^m\rightarrow {\bf S}^{m+1}$ be a hypersurface, which satisfies (i) Φ≡0, (ii) A+λg+μB≡0 for some functions λ and μ, then λ and μ must be constant, and x is Möbius equivalent to either (i) a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 ; or (ii) the pre-image of a stereographic projection of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the Euclidean space R m+1 ; or (iii) the image of the standard conformal map of a hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in the (m+1)-dimensional hyperbolic space H m+1 . This result shows that one can use Möbius differential geometry to unify the three different classes of hypersurface with constant mean curvature and scalar curvature in S m+1 , R m+1 and H m+1 .

A geometric flow on noncompact affine Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the existence criteria for a geometic flow on noncompact affine Riemannian manifolds. Our results can be regarded as a real version of Lee-Tam [19]. As an application, we prove that a complete noncompact Hessian manifold with nonnegative Hessian sectional curvature and bounded geometry is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$ if its tangent bundle has maximal volume growth.

Quantitative Estimates on Invariant Manifolds for Surface Diffeomorphisms

Abstract:We carry out a detailed quantitative analysis on the geometry of invariant manifolds for smooth dissipative systems in dimension two. We begin by quantifying the regularity of any orbit (finite or infinite) in the phase space with a set of explicit inequalities. Then we relate this directly to the quasi-linearization of the local dynamics on regular neighborhoods of this orbit. The parameters of regularity explicitly determine the sizes of the regular neighborhoods and the smooth norms of the corresponding regular charts. As a corollary, we establish the existence of smooth stable and center manifolds with uniformly bounded geometries for regular orbits independently of any pre-existing invariant measure. This provides us with the technical background for the renormalization theory of Hénon-like maps developed in the sequel papers.

Abstract:A classical result of Sampson and Schoen-Yau in 1978 states that every diffeomorphism between compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces is homotopic to an harmonic diffeomorphism. As conjectured by Schoen in 1993 and partially proved by Wan in 1992 and Tam-Wan in 1995, we prove in this article that this theorem generalizes to the non compact case : every quasi symmetric homeomorphism of the circle extends to a quasi isometric harmonic diffeomorphism of the hyperbolic plane. This enables to parametrize the universal Teichmuller space by bounded holomorphic quadratric differentials of the hyperbolic plane.

Abstract:We give a new proof for the local existence of a smooth isometric embedding of a smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with nonzero Riemannian curvature tensor into $6$-dimensional Euclidean space. Our proof avoids the sophisticated arguments via microlocal analysis used in earlier proofs. In Part 1, we introduce a new type of system of partial differential equations, which is not one of the standard types (elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic) but satisfies a property called strong symmetric positivity. Such a PDE system is a generalization of and has properties similar to a system of ordinary differential equations with a regular singular point. A local existence theorem is then established by using a novel local-to-global-to-local approach. In Part 2, we apply this theorem to prove the local existence result for isometric embeddings.

Biholomorphic Maps Between Teichmüller Spaces

Abstract:In this paper we study biholomorphic maps between Teichmuller spaces and the induced linear isometries between the corresponding tangent spaces. The first main result in this paper is the following classification theorem. If M and N are two Riemann surfaces that are not of exceptional type, and if there exists a biholomorphic map between the corresponding Teichmuller spaces Teich(M) and Teich(N), then M and N are quasiconformally related. Also, every such biholomorphic map is geometric. In particular, we have that every automorphism of the Teichmuller space Teich(M) must be geometric. This result generalizes the previously known results (see [2], [5], [7]) and enables us to prove the well-known conjecture that states that the group of automorphisms of Teich(M) is isomorphic to the mapping class group of M whenever the surface M is not of exceptional type. In order to prove the above results, we develop a method for studying linear isometries between L-1-type spaces. Our focus is on studying linear isometries between Banach spaces of integrable holomorphic quadratic differentials, which are supported on Riemann surfaces. Our main result in this direction (Theorem 1.1) states that if M and N are Riemann surfaces of nonexceptional type, then every linear isometry between A(1)(M) and A(1)(N) is geometric. That is, every such isometry is induced by a conformal map between M and N.

Abstract:Let g : M → N be a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism between noncompact Riemann surfaces M and N. In this paper we study the relation between the map g and the complex structures given on M and N. In the case when M and N are of finite analytic type we derive a precise estimate which relates the map g and the Teichmüller distance between complex structures given on M and N. As a corollary we derive a result that every two quasiconformally related finitely generated Kleinian groups are also related by a harmonic diffeomorphism. In addition, we study the question of whether every quasisymmetric selfmap of the unit circle has a quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk. We give a partial answer to this problem. We show the existence of the harmonic quasiconformal extensions for a large class of quasisymmetric maps. In particular it is proved that all symmetric selfmaps of the unit circle have a unique quasiconformal harmonic extension to the unit disk.

Abstract:Since the advent of new pairwise non-diffeomorphic structures on smooth manifolds, it has been questioned whether two topologically identical manifolds could admit different geometries. Not surprisingly, physicists have wondered whether a smooth structure assumption different from some classical known models could produce different physical meanings. In this paper, we inaugurate a very computational manner to produce physical models on classical and exotic spheres that can be built equivariantly, such as the classical Gromoll--Meyer exotic spheres. As first applications, we produce Lorentzian metrics on homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic manifolds that enjoy the same physical properties, such as geodesic completeness, positive Ricci curvature, and compatible time orientation. These constructions can be pulled back to higher models, such as exotic ten spheres bounding spin manifolds, to be approached in forthcoming papers.

Abstract:Given a calibration whose stabilizer acts transitively on the Grassmanian of calibrated planes, we introduce a nontrivial Lie-theoretic condition on , which we call compliancy , and show that this condition holds for many interesting geometric calibrations, including Kähler, special Lagrangian, associative, coassociative, and Cayley. We determine a sufficient condition that ensures compliancy of , we completely characterize compliancy in terms of properties of a natural involution determined by a calibrated plane, and we relate compliancy to the geometry of the calibrated Grassmanian. The condition that a Riemannian immersion be calibrated is a first order condition. By contrast, its extrinsic geometry, given by the second fundamental form A and the induced tangent and normal connections on TL and D on NL , respectively, is second order information. We characterize the conditions imposed on the extrinsic geometric data when the Riemannian immersion is calibrated with respect to a calibration on M which is both parallel and compliant . This motivate the definition of an infinitesimally calibrated Riemannian immersion, generalizing the classical notion of a superminimal surface in .

Abstract:We show that any effective isometric torus action of maximal rank on a compact Riemannian manifold with positive (sectional) curvature and maximal symmetry rank, that is, on a positively curved sphere, lens space, complex or real projective space, is equivariantaly diffeomorphic to a linear action. We show that a compact, simply connected Riemannian 4- or 5-manifold of quasipositive curvature and maximal symmetry rank must be diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere, complex projective plane or the 5-sphere.
