Abstract:Shephard groups are common extensions of Artin and Coxeter groups. They appear, for example, in algebraic study of manifolds. An infinite family of Shephard groups which are not Artin or Coxeter groups is considered. Using techniques form small cancellation theory we show that the groups in this family are bi-automatic.

Abstract:The 2-dimensional Shephard groups are quotients of 2-dimensional Artin groups by powers of standard generators. We show that such a quotient is not $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ if the powers taken are sufficiently large. However, for a given 2-dimensional Shephard group, we construct a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ piecewise Euclidean cell complex with a cocompact action (analogous to the Deligne complex for an Artin group) that allows us to determine other non-positive curvature properties. Namely, we show the 2-dimensional Shephard groups are acylindrically hyperbolic (which was known for 2-dimensional Artin groups), and relatively hyperbolic (which most Artin groups are known not to be). As an application, we show that a broad class of 2-dimensional Artin groups are residually finite.

Abstract:Shephard groups are common generalizations of Coxeter groups, Artin groups, and graph products of cyclic groups. Their definition is similar to that of a Coxeter group, but generators may have arbitrary order rather than strictly order 2. We extend a well known result that Coxeter groups are $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ to a class of Shephard groups that have "enough" finite parabolic subgroups. We also show that in this setting, if the associated Coxeter group is type (FC), then the Shephard group acts properly and cocompactly on a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ cube complex. As part of our proof of the former result, we introduce a new criteria for a complex made of $A_3$ simplices to be $\mathrm{CAT}(1)$.

Abstract:Assuming Gödel's axiom of constructibility $\bold V=\bold L,$ we present a characterization of those groups $L$ for which there exist arbitrarily large groups $H$ such that $aut(H) \cong L$. In particular, we show that it suffices to have one such group $H$ such that the size of its center is bigger than $ 2^{|L |+\aleph_0}$.

Abstract:Our main result is that many triangles of Baumslag-Solitar groups collapse to finite groups, generalizing a famous example of Hirsch. A triangle of Baumslag-Solitar groups means a group with three generators, cyclically ordered, with each generator conjugating some power of the previous one to another power. There are six parameters, occurring in pairs, and we show that the triangle fails to be developable whenever one of the parameters divides its partner, except for a few special cases. Furthermore, under fairly general conditions, the group turns out to be finite and solvable of class<4. We obtain a lot of information about finite quotients, even when we cannot determine developability.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the concept of a Cayley graph automatic group (CGA group or graph automatic group, for short) which generalizes the standard notion of an automatic group. Like the usual automatic groups graph automatic ones enjoy many nice properties: these group are invariant under the change of generators, they are closed under direct and free products, certain types of amalgamated products, and finite extensions. Furthermore, the Word Problem in graph automatic groups is decidable in quadratic time. However, the class of graph automatic groups is much wider then the class of automatic groups. For example, we prove that all finitely generated 2-nilpotent groups and Baumslag-Solitar groups B(1,n) are graph automatic, as well as many other metabelian groups.

Abstract:Complex reflection groups comprise a generalization of Weyl groups of semisimple Lie algebras, and even more generally of finite Coxeter groups. They have been heavily studied since their introduction and complete classification in the 1950s by Shephard and Todd, due to their many applications to combinatorics, representation theory, knot theory, and mathematical physics, to name a few examples. For each given complex reflection group G, we explain a new recipe for producing an integrable system of linear differential equations whose differential Galois group is precisely G. We exhibit these systems explicitly for many (low-rank) irreducible complex reflection groups in the Shephard-Todd classification.

Abstract:This article is dedicated to the study of the acylindrical hyperbolicity of automorphism groups of graph products of groups. Our main result is that, if Γ \Gamma is a finite graph which contains at least two vertices and is not a join and if G \mathcal {G} is a collection of finitely generated irreducible groups, then either Γ G \Gamma \mathcal {G} is infinite dihedral or A u t ( Γ G ) \mathrm {Aut}(\Gamma \mathcal {G}) is acylindrically hyperbolic. This theorem is new even for right-angled Artin groups and right-angled Coxeter groups. Various consequences are deduced from this statement and from the techniques used to prove it. For instance, we show that the automorphism groups of most graph products verify vastness properties such as being SQ-universal; we show that many automorphism groups of graph products do not satisfy Kazhdan’s property (T); we solve the isomorphism problem between graph products in some cases; and we show that a graph product of coarse median groups, as defined by Bowditch, is coarse median itself.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group coacting on an Artin-Schelter regular algebra $A$ homogeneously and inner-faithfully. When the identity component $A_e$ is also Artin-Schelter regular, providing a generalization of the Shephard-Todd-Chevalley Theorem, we say that $G$ is a dual reflection group for $A$. We give two examples of dual reflection groups of order 16, and study algebraic and geometric properties of three associated Artin-Schelter regular algebras of dimension four.

Abstract:Tools from number theory and algebra are very helpful in the study of some combinatorial problems. What is the smallest positive integer k such that an abelian group G can be irredundantly covered by k cosets of subgroups one of which has index n? We will talk about the solution to this combinatorial problem provided by G. Lettl and the speaker via characters of abelian groups and algebraic number theory. The Herzog-Schonheim conjecture asserts that if a group G is partitioned into k > 1 left cosets a1G1,... ,akGk then the indices (G : G1),... ,(G : Gk) cannot be distinct. We will also introduce the speaker's approach to the Herzog-Schonheim conjecture via analytic number theory and some combinatorial arguments. Some related conjectures will be also mentioned in the talk.

Abstract:Garside groups are combinatorial generalizations of braid groups which enjoy many nice algebraic, geometric, and algorithmic properties. In this article we propose a method for turning the direct product of a group $G$ by $\mathbb{Z}$ into a Garside group, under simple assumptions on $G$. This method gives many new examples of Garside groups, including groups satisfying certain small cancellation condition (including surface groups) and groups with a systolic presentation. Our method also works for a large class of Artin groups, leading to many new group theoretic, geometric and topological consequences for them. In particular, we prove new cases of $K(\pi,1)$-conjecture for some hyperbolic type Artin groups.

The Artin monoid Cayley graph

Abstract:In this paper we investigate properties of the Artin monoid Cayley graph. This is the Cayley graph of an Artin group $A_\Gamma$ with respect to the (infinite) generating set given by the associated Artin monoid $A^+_\Gamma$. In a previous paper, the first three authors introduced a monoid Deligne complex and showed that this complex is contractible for all Artin groups. In this paper, we show that the Artin monoid Cayley graph is quasi-isometric to a modification of the Deligne complex for $A_\Gamma$ obtained by coning off translates of the monoid Deligne complex. We then address the question of when the monoid Cayley graph has infinite diameter. We conjecture that this holds for all Artin groups of infinite type. We give a set of criteria that imply infinite diameter, and using existing solutions to the word problem for large-type Artin groups and 3-free Artin groups, we prove that the conjecture holds for any Artin group containing a 3-generator subgroup of one of these two types.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Abstract:We construct the first known examples of infinite subgroups of the outer automorphism group of Out(A_Gamma), for certain right-angled Artin groups A_Gamma. This is achieved by introducing a new class of graphs, called focused graphs, whose properties allow us to exhibit (infinite) projective linear groups as subgroups of Out(Out(A_Gamma)). This demonstrates a marked departure from the known behavior of Out(Out(A_Gamma)) when A_Gamma is free or free abelian, as in these cases Out(Out(A_Gamma)) has order at most 4. We also disprove a previous conjecture of the second author, producing new examples of finite order members of certain Out(Aut(A_Gamma)).
