Abstract:Multiple lattice evidences support the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover at Tch ~ 155 MeV. This regime is characterised by an approximate chiral spin symmetry of the partition function, which is a symmetry of the colour charge and the confining electric part of the QCD Lagrangian. It is traditionally believed that confinement should automatically induce spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, which would preclude the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD at high temperatures. We employ a well-known solvable quark model for QCD in 3+1 dimensions that is chirally symmetric and manifestly confining and argue that while confinement indeed induces dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry at T=0, a chiral restoration phase transition takes place at some critical temperature Tch. Above this temperature, the spectrum of the model consists of chirally symmetric hadrons with approximate chiral spin symmetry.

Abstract:At large N_c, cold nuclear matter is expected to form a crystal and thus spontaneously break translational symmetry. The description of chiral symmetry breaking and translational symmetry breaking can become intertwined. Here, the focus is on aspects of chiral symmetry breaking and its possible restoration that are by construction independent of the nature of translational symmetry breaking---namely spatial averages of chiral order parameters. A system will be considered to be chirally restored provided all spatially-averaged chiral order parameters are zero. A critical question is whether chiral restoration in this sense is possible for phases in which chiral order parameters are locally non-zero but whose spatial averages all vanish. We show that this is not possible unless all chirally-invariant observables are spatially uniform. This result is first derived for Skyrme-type models, which are based on a nonlinear sigma model and by construction break chiral symmetry on a point-by-point basis. A no-go theorem for chiral restoration (in the average sense) for all models of this type is obtained by showing that in these models there exist chirally symmetric order parameters which cannot be spatially uniform. Next we show that the no-go theorem applies to large N_c QCD in any phase which has a non-zero but spatially varying chiral condensate. The theorem is demonstrated by showing that in a putative chirally-restored phase, the field configuration can be reduced to that of a nonlinear sigma model.

Some recent topics on possible chiral restoration in hot and/or dense matter are picked up. We also discuss so called {\em effective} restoration of chiral anomaly hot and/or dense matter, as may be seen in a character change of $\eta '$ meson.

Abstract:In this talk we overview main results indicating existence in QCD of three qualitatively different regimes connected by smooth crossovers upon heating: a hadron gas, a stringy fluid and a quark-gluon plasma. In the combined large N_c and chiral limit these regimes likely become distinct phases separated by phase transitions: a chiral restoration phase transition around T_{ch} ~ 130 MeV and a deconfinement phase transition around T_d ~ 300 MeV. It should be an important task to verify this issue on the lattice. We will introduce a chiral spin symmetry, which is a symmetry of the electric part of electrodynamics and of QCD with light quarks. It is realized approximately in QCD above the chiral restoration crossover and disappears in the QGP regime. The center symmetry of the pure glue action and the chiral spin symmetry of the electric part of the QCD Lagrangian with light quarks are complementary to distinguish the confining regime and its disappearance. We also address other lattice evidences for stringy fluid: hadron resonances extracted from the lattice correlators; breakdown of the thermal perturbation theory at T < ~ 600 MeV and fluctuations of conserved charges that point out the N_c scaling above T ~ 155 MeV.

Abstract:A simple phenomenological hybrid hadron-quark model with excluded volume effects of baryons and chiral dynamics is investigated. The hybrid equation of state naturally connects the low-density baryonic matter with the high-density quark matter. In the intermediate region, a phase, which cannot be regarded as pure hadron matter or pure quark matter, appears. Abstract:We calculate the chiral condensate and quark number density with both assumed analytical forms and numerical solution of the Dyson-Schwinger equation of the quark propagator at finite chemical potential. It shows that once the quark number density becomes nonzero, the chiral condensate below the Fermi surface is remarkably reduced and even has its sign flipped. It provides an explanation for the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in QCD matter.

Abstract:We investigate properties of the quark--antiquark mesons at zero and finite temperature in the framework of a solvable chirally symmetric quark model with linear confining potential. The interquark interaction in the model is reminiscent of that derived in Coulomb gauge QCD, with the string tension being the only model parameter. We demonstrate that while the confining interaction induces spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry at T=0, chiral symmetry gets restored at a temperature Tch ~ 90 MeV for the string tension fixed to provide the phenomenological value of the quark condensate. This temperature is similar to Tch ~ 130 MeV observed on the lattice in the chiral limit for N_c=3. The physical mechanism responsible for the chiral symmetry restoration in the confining regime is Pauli blocking of the quark levels, required for the existence of a nonvanishing quark condensate, by the thermal excitations of the quarks and antiquarks. Thus, above the chiral restoration temperature, the meson-like states are chirally symmetric and approximately chiral spin symmetric. A crucial property of the confined meson-like light-light states above Tch is their size that exceeds drastically that in the chirally broken phase below Tch, in contrast to the heavy-heavy mesons that nearly preserve their size irrespective of the temperature. This property is a result of Pauli blocking of the quark and antiquark levels with small momenta. Furthermore, the root-mean-square radius of the states with J=0,1 diverges in the chiral limit. This unexpected property must be a key to understanding unusual features of the hot QCD matter as observed at RHIC and LHC. Consequently, the confining but chirally symmetric matter above Tch can be considered as a dense system of very large and strongly overlapping meson-like states (``strings'').

Super Restoration of Chiral Symmetry in Massive Four-Fermion Interaction Models

Abstract:The chiral symmetry is explicitly and spontaneously broken in a strongly interacting massive fermionic system. We study the chiral symmetry restoration in massive four-fermion interaction models with increasing temperature and chemical potential. At high temperature and large chemical potential, we find the boundaries where the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry can be fully restored in the massive Gross--Neveu model. We call the phenomenon super restoration. The phase boundary is obtained analytically and numerically. In the massive Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, it was found that whether super restoration occurs depends on regularizations. We also evaluate the behavior of the dynamical mass and show the super restoration boundaries on the ordinary phase diagrams.

Quarkyonic matter with chiral symmetry restoration

Abstract:We present a novel unified approach to describe the dense symmetric nuclear matter by combining the quarkyonic matter framework with the parity doublet model. This integration allows for a consistent treatment of the transition from hadronic to quark degrees of freedom while incorporating chiral symmetry restoration effects. Our model introduces a chiral invariant mass for both baryons and constituent quarks, enabling a smooth crossover between hadronic and quark matter in symmetric nuclear matter. We derive the equation of state (EOS) for this hybrid system and investigate its thermodynamic properties. The model predicts a gradual onset of quark degrees of freedom at high densities while maintaining aspects of confinement.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of chiral phase transition on the pentaquark Θ+ mass and width at one-loop level of NΘ+K coupling at finite temperature and density. The behavior of the mass, especially the width in hadronic medium is dominated by the characteristics of chiral symmetry restoration at high temperature and high density. The mass and width shifts of positive-parity Θ+ are much larger than that of negative-parity one, which may be helpful to determine the parity of Θ+ in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:This article reviews our view on how chiral symmetry, its pattern of breaking and restoration under extreme conditions manifest themselves in the nucleon, nuclei, nuclear matter and dense hadronic matter. We discuss how first-principle (QCD) calculations of the properties of finite nuclei can be effectuated by embedding the “standard nuclear physics approach (SNPA)” into the framework of effective field theories of nuclei that incorporate chiral dynamics and then exploit the predictive power of the theory to accurately compute such solar neutrino processes as the proton–proton fusion and the “hep” process and such cosmological nucleosynthesis process as thermal neutron–proton capture etc. The Brown–Rho (BR) scaling that implements chiral symmetry property of baryon-rich medium is re-interpreted in terms of “vector manifestation” of hidden local symmetry à la Harada–Yamawaki. We present a clear direct evidence and a variety of indirect evidences for BR scaling in nuclear processes at normal nuclear matter density probed by weak and electromagnetic fields and at higher density probed by heavy-ion collisions and compact-star observables. We develop the notion of “broadband equilibration” in heavy-ion processes and sharpen the role of strangeness in the formation of compact stars and their collapse into black-holes. We revisit the Cheshire Cat phenomenon first discovered in the skyrmion structure of baryons and more recently revived in the form of “quark–hadron continuity” in mapping low-density structure of hadrons to high-density structure of quarks and gluons and argue once more for the usefulness and power of effective field theories based on chiral symmetry under extreme conditions. It is shown how color–flavor locking in terms of QCD variables and hidden local symmetry in terms of hadronic variables can be connected and how BR scaling fits into this “continuity” scheme exhibiting a novel aspect of the Cheshire Cat phenomenon.

Abstract:We study the relation between chiral and $U_A(1)$ symmetries in the quark-meson model. Although quarks and mesons are described in mean field approximation, the topological susceptibility characterizing the $U_A(1)$ breaking comprises two components: one controlled by the condensate and the other by the meson fluctuation. The $U_A(1)$ restoration is governed by the competition of these components. In a hot medium, the condensates melt. However, the fluctuation is enhanced. Therefore, the $U_A(1)$ symmetry cannot be solely restored via the temperature effect. Nevertheless, the baryon density reduces the condensates and fluctuation, and thereby, the $U_A(1)$ symmetry can only be restored in a dense or dense and hot medium. The strange condensate plays a weak role in the susceptibility, and the chiral and $U_A(1)$ symmetry restorations occur almost at the same critical point.

Chiral symmetry restoration in a rotating medium

Abstract:We study the nature of the chiral symmetry restoration within the Yukawa model with spontaneous symmetry breaking. We work with scalar and fermion fields which are subject to the effects of a rotating system. In this work, we show the derivation of the scalar field propagator in a rotating medium using the Fock-Schwinger proper-time method. We compute analytically the effective potential in the high-temperature approximations, including the contribution of the ring diagrams to account for the plasma screening properties. We study the chiral transition as we vary the angular velocity $\Omega$, the boson self-coupling $\lambda$ and the fermion-boson coupling $g$. We show that the critical temperature for the restoration of chiral symmetry always starts with decreasing behaviour, until it reaches a minimum and from there when increasing $\Omega$, we observe $T_c$ increases monotonically. In all the phase transition lines in the $T-\Omega$ plane reported, we obtain that the rotating effects are able to change the order of the phase transition.

Abstract:We study chiral symmetry restoration by analyzing thermal properties of QCD's (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons, especially the pion. The meson properties are obtained from the spectral densities of mesonic imaginary-time correlation functions. To obtain the correlation functions, we solve the Dyson-Schwinger equations and the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equations in the leading symmetry-preserving rainbow-ladder approximation. In the chiral limit, the pion and its partner sigma degenerate at the critical temperature $T_c$. At $T \gtrsim T_c$, it is found that the pion rapidly dissociates, which signals deconfinement phase transition. Beyond the chiral limit, the pion dissociation temperature can be used to define the pseudo-critical temperature of chiral phase crossover, which is consistent with that obtained by the maximum point of the chiral susceptibility. The parallel analysis for kaon and pseudoscalar $s\bar{s}$ suggests that heavy mesons may survive above $T_c$.

Abstract:We extend the recent study of K1/K* enhancement as a signature of chiral symmetry restoration in heavy ion collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider via the kinetic approach to include the effects due to nonunity hadron fugacities during the evolution of produced hadronic matter and the temperature-dependent K1 mass. Although including nonunity pion and kaon fugacities reduces slightly the K1/K* enhancement found in previous study due to chiral symmetry restoration, adding temperature-dependent K1 mass leads to a substantial further reduction of the K1/K* enhancement. However, the final K1/K* ratio still shows a factor of 2.4 and 1.3 enhancement, respectively, in peripheral and midcentral collisions compared to the case without chiral symmetry restoration, confirming its use as a good signature for chiral symmetry restoration in the hot dense matter produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.044911 ©2024 American Physical Society
