Abstract:As the development of smart electronics, self-powered sources have been attracting increasing attention.This review summarizes research progress of photovoltaic fibers and their integrated power sources with multi-stage energy conversion. Recent development of three dimensional photovoltaic fibers is glanced with special attention to structure design and materials of typical photovoltaic types(inorganic, organic,dye/quantum dot sensitized and perovskite solar cells). The application of carbon materials in fiber energy is focused as it is a hot topic recently. The hybrid energy systems based on fiber solar cells and fiber supercapacitors, fiber batteries and fiber nanogenerators are summarized together with hybrid energy textiles. This review provides a macroscopic view of novel energy fibers and will attract research interest in flexible/wearable fiber electronics and energy textiles.

Abstract:Wearable electronics has recently attracted great attentions regarding their flexibility, light weight and integratability. However, with the rapid development of wearable electronics, some knotty while urgent problems appear in the energy supply for them. For example, conventional planar energy devices with inferior flexibility are unable to conformally attach to the irregular substrates, besides their poor breathability and wet permeability. Such problems have severely restricted the progress of wearable electronics and other related research fields. A general and effective strategy to tackle abovementioned problems is designing energy devices into a fiber format. Although the supplied energy of single fiber-shaped energy device is still limited, these fiber-shaped power systems can be easily woven into textiles to realize high energy outputs. Meanwhile, energy textiles indicate many promising features such as the ability of conformally attaching to irregular substrates, e.g., human body, breathability and wet permeability, which can effectively meet the requirements in the advancement of wearable electronics. Fiber-shaped energy devices can be divided into two categories including energy harvesting and energy storage. Energy harvesting devices are mainly comprised of dye-sensitized solar cells, polymer solar cells and perovskite solar cells; while energy storage devices contains supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, lithium-air batteries, zinc-air batteries and aluminum-air batteries, etc. For practical applications, energy harvesting and storage devices are usually integrated to realize a self-powering functionality. This review article emphatically introduces the history, the state-of-the-art and the remaining challenge of fiber-shaped energy harvesting and storage devices. Firstly, the available fiber electrodes are described with a focus on the advancement of carbon nanotube fibers that simultaneously demonstrate high mechanical, electrical and electrochemical properties. Secondly, a variety of fiber-shaped energy harvesting and storage as well as their integrated devices are carefully discussed. Thirdly, the recent development in making fiber-shaped energy devices into power textiles is briefly presented. The main directions in their further advancement are highlighted at end.

Abstract:Wearable electronic devices that can be directly worn on the human body or combined with daily textiles have experienced a booming development with the rapid development of mobile electronics. These wearable electronic devices strongly demand indispensable, high performance power systems with small size, high flexibility, and adaptability to comfort frequent deformations during usage. Fabricating high‐performance energy storage systems in a 1D shape like fiber is recognized as a promising strategy to address the above issues. These fiber‐shaped power systems with diameters from tens to hundreds of micrometers can adapt to various deformations for stable operation in close contact with the human body. It is also possible to further weave such 1D energy storage devices into breathable textiles with matching electrochemical performances for the wearable electronics. Here, the key advancements related to fiber‐shaped energy storage devices are reviewed, including the synthesis of materials, the design of structures, and the optimization of properties for the most explored energy storage devices, i.e., supercapacitors, aprotic lithium‐based batteries, as well as novel aqueous battery systems. The remaining challenges are finally discussed to highlight the future direction of the development of fiber‐shaped energy storage devices.

Abstract:As a promising candidate for future demand, fiber-shaped electrochemical energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries have obtained considerable attention from academy to industry. Carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotube and graphene, have been widely investigated as electrode materials due to their merits of light weight, flexibility and high capacitance. In this review, recent progress of carbon nanomaterials in flexible fiber-shaped energy storage devices has been summarized in accordance with the development of fibrous electrodes, including the diversified electrode preparation, functional and intelligent device structure, and large-scale production of fibrous electrodes or devices.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems have received remarkable attention during the past decades because of the high demand of the world energy consumption. Various materials along with the structure designs have been utilized to enhance the overall performance. Among them, nanofibers have been widely explored due to their unique properties (i.e., high surface area, multi-functionality, high porosity, outstanding flexibility, etc.) during the past few decades. Meanwhile, electrospinning, considered a simple and low-cost approach, has attracted tremendous attention because those nanofibrous materials with functional properties prepared by this unique technique can address numerous issues, especially in energy fields. This paper aims to comprehensively review the latest advances in developing advanced electrospun nanofibers for electrochemical devices. It starts with a brief introduction to the advantages of the electrospinning technique. It highlights ongoing research activities, followed by the history of electrospinning, the principle of electrospinning, and the uniqueness of electrospun nanofibers. Afterward, state-of-the-art developments for their applications in electrochemical devices, including but not limited to rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, solar cells, hydrogen storage, etc., are discussed in detail. A future vision regarding challenges and solutions is proposed at the end. This review aims to provide an extensive and comprehensive reference to apply functional electrospun nanofibers in energy areas.

Efficient Fiber-Shaped Devices for Energy Conversion and Storage

Abstract:Summary form only given. Traditional solar cells based on planar sandwiched structures are restricted by heavy electrode materials, cost-consuming technologies and application flexibility. To overcome these issues, fiber-shaped dye-sensitized (FDSC) and perovskite solar cells (FPSC) for potable/wearable energy harvesting were developed, and conversion efficiencies of 8.07% (FDSC) and 5.35% (FPSC) have been achieved [1, 2]. Compared with typical solar cells, theses fiber solar cells are TCO-free, cost-efficient and flexible, exhibiting outstanding light harvesting property [3, 4], which are feasible for utilizing low-cost electrode materials and various optical designs. Also, electrochemical energy storage devices, e.g. supercapacitors [5] and batteries [6], were fabricated into the fiber format, which show advantages in high flexibility, easy to scale, low-cost materials. Further, the innovative incorporation of fiber solar cells and fiber energy storage devices has finally contributed to novel integrated fiber power systems. Overall energy conversion efficiency of 2.1% and 3.4% was achieved for supercapacitor and battery based hybrid energy system, respectively [7, 8].

Abstract:An all-solid-state, coaxial and self-powered "energy fiber" is demonstrated that simultaneously converts solar energy to electric energy and further stores it. The "energy fiber" is flexible and can be scaled up for the practical application by the well-developed textile technology, and may open a new avenue to future photoelectronics and electronics.

Abstract:Energy storage is a key requirement for the emerging wearable technologies. Recent progress in this direction includes the development of fiber based batteries and capacitors and even some examples of such fibers incorporated into prototype textiles. Herein we discuss the advantages of using the wet-spinning process to create nanostructured carbon based materials as wearable energy storage. The ability to control the physical, mechanical, electrical, and electrochemical properties of carbon nanotube based fibers holds great promise to develop smart polymeric structure as an energy storing materials including fibers and textiles. This is the first comprehensive review to discuss effect of nanostructured energy materials on the electrochemical properties of carbon nanotube based fibers which covers the various compositions, spinning and fabrication conditions on the performance of wearable energy storage.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil fuels and the increasing demand of energy for economic development, it is urgent to develop renewable energy technologies to sustain the economic growth. Electrospinning is a versatile and efficient fabrication method for one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured fibers of metals, metal oxides, hydrocarbons, composites, and so forth. The resulting nanofibers (NFs) with controllable diameters ranging from nanometer to micrometer scale possess unique properties such as a high surface-area-to-volume and aspect ratio, low density, and high pore volume. These properties make 1D nanomaterials more advantageous than conventional materials in energy harvesting, conversion, and storage devices. In this review, the key parameters for e-spinning are discussed and the properties of electrospun NFs and applications in solar cells, fuel cells, nanogenerators, hydrogen energy harvesting and storage, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of electrospinning and an outlook on the possible future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphene fibers are a kind of novel carbon fibers assembled by orderly aligned graphene sheets with high flexibility, good conductivity, high thermal conductivity, and low density, which make them possible to be widely used in high-performance and multifunctional compound materials as well as flexible electronic devices. In this review, we summarize the research progress in the synthesis of graphene fibers, and their applications in sensor, energy storage, and energy conversion. Furthermore, the current issues and some prospects for the future trend of graphene fibers are discussed.

Abstract:Carbon fibers (CFs) and CF-reinforced composites have been widely used as high performance structural materials in various military and civilian fields for decades. Owing to the rapid advances and boom in flexible/wearable electronics, CF materials endowed with excellent material properties have received great attention for building lightweight, cost-efficient and miniaturized flexible/wearable energy devices. Herein, a detailed overview of recent progress in wire/fiber-shaped flexible power devices made from micro-CFs is given for the first time. With an emphasis on electrode materials and architecture designs, CF-based wire/fiber energy devices including fiber nanogenerators, wire/fiber solar cells, wire-type batteries, fiber supercapacitors and integrated/hybrid fiber devices are discussed. Aiming to motivate more exciting applications, research directions and perspectives, efficient flexible wire-type CF energy devices are proposed.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil fuels and the pollution of environment, it is urgent to develop renewable energy technologies to replace the traditional fossil fuels and satisfy the environmental needs. Nanofiberous materials (NFMs) have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage devices in recent years and considered to be promising candidates to address these critical issues because of their excellent properties, such as extremely large surface area, high length/diameter ratio, good flexibility, high porosity, and multiple functionalities. Electrospinning is a particularly low cost, simple, and versatile method to produce nanofibers from various kinds of materials, and the improved coaxial electrospinning can fabricate nanotubes and core/shell structural nanofibers. This review highlights research into the use of electrospinning to create nanofibers for the applications in energy-related devices, mainly including dye-sensitized solar cells, fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Additionally, the application of NFMs derived from electrospinning in other areas, such as hydrogen storage and lithium-air batteries, are also discussed. At last, the limitations and future prospects for large-scale applications of NFMs by electrospinning are proposed.

Abstract:The development of nanogenerators (NGs) with optimal performances and functionalities requires more novel materials. Over the past decade, biopolymer nanofibers (BPNFs) have become critical sustainable building blocks in energy-related fields because they have distinctive nanostructures and properties and can be obtained from abundant and renewable resources. This review summarizes recent advances in the use of BPNFs for NG development. We will begin by introducing various strategies for fabricating BPNFs with diverse structures and performances. Then, we will systematically present the utilization of polysaccharide and protein nanofibers for NGs. We will mainly focus on the use of BPNFs to generate bulk materials with tailored structures and properties for assembling of triboelectric and piezoelectric NGs. The use of BPNFs to construct NGs for the generation of electricity from moisture and osmosis is also discussed. Finally, we illustrate our personal perspectives on several issues that require special attention with regard to future developments in this active field.

Abstract:Energy conversion and storage devices play an important role in industry and society with the rapid growth of energy consumption. Supercapacitors are very attractive due to their superior power density, fast charge/discharge rates and long cycle lifetime. Graphene fiber (GF), a fascinating material, has drawn considerable attention and shown great potential as an active material in the field of supercapacitors owing to its unique and tunable nanostructure, high electrical conductivity, excellent mechanical flexibility, light weight, and ease of functionalization. This review focuses on the recent significant advances in the fabrication and application of graphene-based fiber as electrode material in supercapacitors. The synthetic strategies and application in the supercapacitor are presented, accompanied with the summary and outlook for the future development of GFs.
