Abstract:CO2 mineralization is an economical technology with a low carbon footprint and has been considered an effective means to achieve carbon fixation. The slow diffusion and reaction in the gas-solid system of CO2 mineralization is a common issue affecting the normal carbonation depth. The surface water plays a critical role as an ionic mass transferring medium in the reaction systems. By studying the CO2 mineralization of dispersed calcium silicate (CS) particles, this work systematically revealed the kinetics and mechanisms of carbonation under mild environments (below 80 degrees C). It was interesting to find that carbonation of CS particles followed different kinetic mechanisms depending on the temperature and with the migration of surface water. At 20 degrees C, the CO2 mineralization reaction conformed to the unreacted shrinking-core mechanism with the primary reaction rate-limiting step of product layer diffusion. For higher temperatures (40-80 degrees C), the carbonation process was controlled by the surface water coverage. The leaching behavior of CS indicated that electrical double layer (EDL) formed at the particle interface and limited Ca2+ activity in water film might be the mechanism of surface water coverage controlled kinetics. Accordingly, the enhanced CO2 mineralization of CS, 58.16% CO2 uptake increment, was realized at 80 degrees C through rehydration activation. The evolution of mineral micromorphology with process of leaching and carbonation is characterized by semi-quantitative XRD analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis. CO2 mineralization kinetics and the proposed activation method under mild environment open the door to efficient CO2 mineralization with low energy consumption.

Abstract:Industrial pollution is the major source of global warming through emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) like CO2, CH4, and NO2, causing noticeable increasing in the world’s temperature. Mineral carbonation is a method of carbon capture and storage (CCS) through which CO2 is sequestered with advantage of permanent sequestration and no need for post-storage surveillance and monitoring through stabilizing the reactive mineral wastes released from metal industries. This paper applied a simple and an inexpensive hydration process as a pre-treatment step for the carbonation of Ladle Furnace (LF) slag, one of the steel production by-products in UAE, followed by direct gas-solid carbonation in a new designed integrated fluidized bed reactor (FBR). About (10–15)% by weight of produced steel, alkaline solid residues were generated, based on the characteristics of the manufacturing process. The integrated FBR was designed to control the flow rate up to 50 l/min with step accuracy of 0.1 l/min, and temperature up to 200 °C through a double jacket electrical heater. Operating pressure can be adjusted up to 6 bars. All parameters are monitored by SCADA system. A mixture gas of 10% CO2, balanced with air, was used to perform the carbonation process and evaluation the carbonation efficiency as well. A gas analyzer installed at the outlet of FBR was used to measure unreacted CO2 gas after leaving the reactor, and calculate the amount of CO2 captured accordingly. Results of analytical techniques like TGA and XRD emphasized the sequestration of CO2 and show a high efficient carbonation process.

Abstract:Human activities emitting carbon dioxide (CO2) have caused severe greenhouse effects and accelerated climate change, making carbon neutrality urgent. Seawater mineral carbonation technology offers a promising negative emission strategy. This work investigates current advancements in proposed seawater mineral carbonation technologies, including CO2 storage and ocean chemical carbon sequestration. CO2 storage technology relies on indirect mineral carbonation to fix CO2, involving CO2 dissolution, Ca/Mg extraction, and carbonate precipitation, optimized by adding alkaline substances or using electrochemical methods. Ocean chemical carbon sequestration uses natural seawater for direct mineral carbonation, enhanced by adding specific materials to promote carbonate precipitation and increase CO2 absorption, thus enhancing marine carbon sinks. This study evaluates these technologies' advantages and challenges, including reaction rates, costs, and ecological impacts, and analyzes representative materials' carbon fixation potential. Literature indicates that seawater mineral carbonation can play a significant role in CO2 storage and enhancing marine carbon sinks in the coming decades.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation, involving reactions of alkaline earth oxides with CO2, has received great attention, as a potential carbon dioxide sequestration technology. Indeed, once converted into mineral carbonate, CO2 can be permanently stored in an inert phase. Several studies have been focalized to the utilization of industrial waste as a feedstock and the reuse of some by-products as possible materials for the carbonation reactions. In this work municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and other ashes, as bottom ash, coal fly ash, flue gas desulphurization residues, and silica fume, are stabilized by low-cost technologies. In this context, the CO2 is used as a raw material to favor the chemical stabilization of the wastes, by taking advantage of the pH reduction. Four different stabilization treatments at room temperature are performed and the carbonation reaction evaluated for three months. The crystalline calcium carbonate phase was quantified by the Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. Results highlight that the proposed stabilization strategy promotes CO2 sequestration, with the formation of different calcium carbonate phases, depending on the wastes. This new sustainable and promising technology can be an alternative to more onerous mineral carbonation processes for the carbon dioxide sequestration.

Abstract:As global climate issues become increasingly pronounced, human society is confronting unprecedented environmental challenges. The escalating anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions have intensified the global warming process, resulting in a cascade of environmental degradation issues. CO 2 mineralization stands out as a highly promising approach for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to mitigate global warming. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current state of accelerated CO 2 mineralization using typical industrial solid waste, "fly ash," as a raw material. The article commences by introducing the physicochemical properties of fly ash, and various typical CO 2 mineralization kinetic models. Subsequently, it provides a comprehensive evaluation of accelerated CO 2 mineralization pathways, encompassing reactor design (reactor types, operational parameter design, etc.), fly ash activation pretreatment (milling, calcination, etc.), and chemical additives (organic amines, amino acid salts, sodium salts, ammonium salts, etc.). A summarization and analysis of the integrated utilization of products obtained through different mineralization pathways are presented. Finally, the paper discusses the scale-up applications and potential challenges faced by reported fly ash carbonation, emphasizing that research on accelerated solid waste carbonation is an inevitable process for the industrial application of this technology. We hope that this review will contribute to advancing the industrialization of CO 2 sequestration through mineralization of solid waste.

Abstract:The increased CO2 quantities in the environment have led to many harmful effects. Therefore, it is very important to decrease the CO2 levels in the environment. CO2 capture along with safe and permanent storage using mineral CO2 sequestration method can play an important role to reduce carbon emissions into the environment. Mineral sequestration is a stable storage method that provides long-term storage and an appropriate substitute for the more popular geological storage method. The process is most suited for places where there is a lack of underground cavities for underground geological storage. Minerals rich in Ca and Mg are used predominantly in carbonation reactions. In addition, those alkaline wastes that are rich in Mg and Ca such as cement waste, steel slag and many process ashes can also be employed in CO2 sequestration. Mineral carbonation could be used for the sequestration of billions of tonnes of CO2 every year. However, various drawbacks related to mineral carbonation still need to be addressed, such as resolving the slow rate of reactions, necessity of large amounts of feedstock, decreasing the high overall cost of CO2 sequestration and reducing the huge energy requirements to accelerate the carbonation reaction. This study explores a number of carbonation methods, parameters that control the process and future potential applications of carbonated products.

Abstract:Accelerated mineral carbonation is a promising CO 2 sequestration technology that is strongly linked to concepts of sustainability and Green Chemistry, and its process requirements apply principles of reaction kinetics, transport phenomena, and materials characterization. The present work aimed to develop educational tools for including accelerated mineral carbonation in chemical engineering curricula. To this end, an experimental investigation laboratory procedure and a design project outline have been conceived. Abstract:To mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions and address the climate change effects, carbon capture and storage by mineralization (CCSM) and industrial mineral carbonation are gaining attraction. Specifically, in-situ carbon mineralization in the subsurface geological formations occurs due to the transformation of silicate minerals into carbonates (e.g., CaCO3, MgCO3) while ex-situ carbon mineralization at the surface undergoes chemical reactions with metal cations - thus leading to permanent storage. However, both processes are complex and require a rigorous investigation to enable large-scale mineralization. This paper, therefore, aims to provide an overreaching review of the in-situ and ex-situ methods for carbon mineralization for different rock types, various engineered processes, and associated mechanisms pertinent to mineralization. Furthermore, the factors influencing in-situ and ex-situ processes, e.g., suitable minerals, optimal operating conditions, and technical challenges, have also been inclusively reviewed. Our findings suggest that in-situ carbon mineralization, i.e., subsurface permanent storage of CO2 by mineralization, arguably is more promising than ex-situ mineralization due to energy efficiency and large-scale storage potential. Furthermore, the effect of rock type can be ranked as igneous (basalt) > carbonates (sedimentary) > sandstone (sedimentary) to consider for rapid and large-scale CCSM. The findings of this review will, therefore, help towards a better understanding of carbon mineralization, which contributes towards large-scale CO2 storage to meet the global net-zero targets.

Abstract:Direct CO 2 mineralization using fly ash is a promising technology to achieve CO 2 sequestration. Seawater's abundance and calcium-rich composition make it an attractive substitute solution for CO 2 sequestration. However, there have been limited studies conducted so far, and the mineralization mechanism remains unclear, which has constrained its industrial application potential. Here we utilized low CaO-content fly ash in combination with seawater to perform direct CO 2 mineralization under ambient conditions, achieving a remarkable carbonation efficiency of 94.8 %. Upon scrutinizing the carbonate parameter evolution, we identify a crucial pH range (8.2 ∼ 10.4) that enhances calcium elution efficiency, leading to heightened carbonation efficiency. The involvement of Mg(OH) 2 within this pH range influences CaCO 3 precipitation kinetics and crystalline phase. This innovative approach holds promise for carbon sequestration and presents a valuable contribution to sustainable CO 2 utilization strategies.

Abstract:CO2 mineralization (aka mineral carbonation) is a promising method for the chemical sequestration of CO2 via reaction with oxides of alkaline or alkaline-earth metals to form carbonates. It has documented advantages over similar technological solutions to climate change. The huge amount of industrial solid waste, as a serious environmental issue confronted by China, can provide additional alkalinity sources for CO2 mineralization. In this study, we present an overview of the latest advances in the emerging technologies of CO2-mineralization via industrial solid waste in China, from the perspective of both theoretical and practical considerations. We summarize the types of industrial solid waste that are used (mainly coal fly ash, steel slag, phosphogypsum, and blast furnace slag) and the technological options available in the literature, with an emphasis on the discussion of the involved process-intensification methods and valuable chemicals produced. Furthermore, we illustrate the current status of pertinent policies, and research and development activities in China. Finally, we identify the current knowledge gaps, particularly in understanding the overall sustainability performance of these CO2-mineralization technologies, and indicate that the technical, economic, and environmental challenges of promoting and commercializing these technologies for the co-utilization of industrial solid waste and carbon resources call for, amongst other things, more joint efforts by chemists, chemical engineers, and environmental scientists, and more feedback from the energy and industrial sectors.

Abstract:As per the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming should be restricted to below 2°C to mitigate the consequences of severe climate change. This study investigates an innovative carbon sequestration method that involves the electrolysis of concentrated seawater to produce alkali solutions and hydrogen gas for mineral carbonation. The optimal conditions were examined with a focus on factors such as electrode materials, current density, and electrolyte flow rate. The study demonstrated the potential for CO 2 reduction and the formation of valuable metal carbonates (Mg(OH) 2 , MgCO 3 , and CaCO 3 ) via accelerated mineral carbonation. With 1 m 3 of concentrated seawater, 1.35 kg of CO 2 was removed and 10.3 and 1.1 kg of Mg(OH) 2 and CaCO 3 were precipitated, respectively. This method is an economically viable and energy-efficient alternative to conventional mineral carbonation, which requires substantial resources.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation emerges as a promising technology to tackle a contemporary challenge: climate change. This method entails the interaction of carbon dioxide with metal-oxide-bearing materials to produce solid carbonates resembling common substances (chalk, antacids, or baking soda). Given that steelmaking industries contribute to 8% of the global total emissions annually, the repurposing of their by-products holds the potential to mitigate CO 2 production. Steel slag is a by-product of the metallurgical industry which is suitable for capturing CO 2 due to its chemical composition, containing high CaO (24%–65%) and MgO (3%–20%) amounts, which increases the reactivity with the CO 2 . Moreover, the carbonation process can improve the hydraulic and mechanical properties of steel slag, making this by-product interesting to be reused in building materials. Different studies have developed in the last years addressing the possibilities of reducing the environmental impact of steel products, by CO 2 sequestration. This study is dedicated to reviewing the basics of mineral carbonation applied to steel slag, along with recent advancements in research. Special emphasis is placed on identifying parameters that facilitate the reactions and exploring potential applications for the resulting products. The advantages and disadvantages of steel slag carbonation for the industrialization of the process are also discussed.

Abstract:Seawater-based mineral carbonation is a treatment method that can simultaneously address the issues of global warming and marine pollution caused by the desalination brine. However, the selection of reactants without considering wastewater, the low reaction rate and selectivity of generated carbonate compounds require improvement. This study aims to more efficiently precipitate magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) in desalination brine and control the characteristics of the precipitated CaCO 3 (PCC). The efficiency of Mg carbonation under brine conditions is analyzed, and the precipitation of CaCO 3 is controlled by separating the CO 2 absorption-precipitation process. Mass transfer of CO 2 improved under atmospheric pressure brine conditions, accelerating the carbonation of Mg. The adjusted [Ca 2+ ]:[CO 3 2− ] ratio was a factor influencing polymorphism and size during the precipitation process of CaCO 3 . Sodium-rich wastewater generated in the process can be integrated with chlor-alkali processes and additional sodium precipitation processes to secure its value as a sustainable technology.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation is an increasingly popular method for carbon capture and storage that resembles the natural weathering process of alkaline-earth oxides for carbon dioxide removal into stable carbonates. This study aims to evaluate the potential of reusing Fe-rich mine waste for carbon sequestration by assessing the influence of pH condition, particle size fraction and reaction temperature on the carbonation reaction. A carbonation experiment was performed in a stainless steel reactor at ambient pressure and at a low temperature. The results indicated that the alkaline pH of waste samples was suitable for undergoing the carbonation process. Mineralogical analysis confirmed the presence of essential minerals for carbonation, i.e., magnetite, wollastonite, anorthite and diopside. The chemical composition exhibited the presence of iron and calcium oxides (39.58–62.95%) in wastes, indicating high possibilities for carbon sequestration. Analysis of the carbon uptake capacity revealed that at alkaline pH (8–12), 81.7–87.6 g CO2/kg of waste were sequestered. Furthermore, a particle size of <38 μm resulted in 83.8 g CO2/kg being sequestered from Fe-rich waste, suggesting that smaller particle sizes highly favor the carbonation process. Moreover, 56.1 g CO2/kg of uptake capacity was achieved under a low reaction temperature of 80 °C. These findings have demonstrated that Fe-rich mine waste has a high potential to be utilized as feedstock for mineral carbonation. Therefore, Fe-rich mine waste can be regarded as a valuable resource for carbon sinking while producing a value-added carbonate product. This is in line with the sustainable development goals regarding combating global climate change through a sustainable low-carbon industry and economy that can accelerate the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a technology approach to the management of anthropogenic carbon dioxide gas emissions to the atmosphere. By injecting CO2 into host rocks, or by employing a an ex situ application step, geological formations can react with and store huge volumes of CO2 as carbonate minerals. An alternative mineral feedstock material is the Gt of industrial process wastes that are often disposed to landfill. By applying an accelerated carbonation step to solid waste, there is potential to sequestrate meaningful quantities of CO2 in carbonate-cemented products that have reuse potential. The manufacture of carbonated aggregates is commercially established in Europe, and recent advances in technology include a mobile plant that directly utilizes flue-gas derived CO2 in the mineralisation process. The present work discusses the basis for mineralization in geologically derived minerals and industrial wastes, with a focus being on the manufacture of products with value. An assessment of mineralized construction aggregates suggests that carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology can manage significant quantities of this CO2.

Abstract:Mineral carbonation can simultaneously realize the effective treatment of CO2 and iron and steel slag; thus, it is of great significance for the low carbon and sustainable development of iron and steel industry. In this article, the researches of mineral carbonation process using iron and steel slag as feedstock are reviewed, and the carbonation reaction mechanism and the parameters affecting the reaction rate and carbonation degree are analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of different enforcement approaches, such as ultrasonic enhancement, mixed calcination, microbial enhancement, and cyclic coprocessing on mineral carbonation reaction, is introduced. The additional effects of mineral carbonation, such as solving the problem of poor volume stability of steel slag, weakening the leaching of heavy metal ions, and reducing the pH of the leachate, are also illustrated. Moreover, issues related to mineral carbonation technology that should be emphasized upon soon, such as the production of valuable products, use of industrial wastewater, aqueous phase recycling use, multiparameter coupling analysis, and research on the properties of carbonation residues, are also discussed, which contribute some perspectives to the future development of mineral carbonation of iron and steel slag.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Mineral carbonation of secondary materials offers an innovative way of storing carbon dioxide in materials that instead would mostly go to waste. This study investigates the carbonation efficiency (CE) of 11 different secondaries from refractory production, waste incineration, and the paper industry compared to untreated and thermally activated serpentinite. To determine the chemical and mineralogical composition of the materials, various analytical methods, like X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller and thermogravimetric analysis have been employed, both before and after the direct aqueous carbonation process. Each material was examined over reaction times of 6 & 10 hours at 180 °C and a starting pressure of 20 bar in a 0.6 L stainless steel batch reactor. The received results were then compared to the theoretical CO 2 uptake, defined as the maximum carbon dioxide storage potential achievable if all Ca, Fe and Mg ions were converted to carbonates. The findings indicate carbonation efficiencies of 14–65 % for secondary materials, compared to 0.7–14 % observed in the serpentinite samples. The highest uptakes were achieved by the refractory materials, primarily due to their high metal oxide content. However, a negative impact was observed from graphite-based carbon binders in the refractories, with increased leaching of these binders leading to a decrease in carbonation efficiency. Materials with higher SiO 2 content showed reduced performance, suggesting a passivation layer buildup during carbonation.

Abstract:The global climate crisis is escalating, with climate change caused by the greenhouse effect posing a common challenge for the sustainable development of the environment and economy worldwide. Utilizing alkaline industrial residues for CO 2 capture and storage is considered a viable technology. In China, soil salinization is a serious and widespread issue. Saline-alkali soils, characterized by high levels of soluble salts and alkalinity, have the potential to enhance the efficiency of carbonation in alkaline industrial residues. This study conducted carbonation experiments on fly ash, steel slag, and carbide slag. The primary carbonation pathways and reaction mechanisms of these materials were investigated. The particle size, mineralogy, and morphology of the resulting carbonation products were characterized, and the impact of different carbonation pathways on carbonation efficiency and storage capacity was evaluated. Finally, the study, for the first time, analyzed the enhancing mechanism of saline-alkali soil as an additive in the carbonation reaction. The research results indicate that carbonation reaction will change the particle size composition of the material, and the reaction rate of steel slag is lower than that of fly ash and carbide slag. Saline-alkali soil plays a facilitating role in CO 2 storage, and it can improve carbonation efficiency of different materials by 4.17% −34.94%, which can effectively reduce the cost of the additive.

Abstract:This study describes a two-step accelerated mineral carbonation technology at moderate temperatures and atmospheric pressure by choosing the “problematic ions for seawater utilization” as mineralizers in the simplified seawater-MgCl2-CaCl2-H2O system, that is, Ca2+ as the first mineralizer and Mg2+ in the residual solution as the second. Not only can carbonate ions generated from the absorption and ionization of CO2 be fixed by Ca2+ through the first carbonation process with the added alkali source, MgO, but HCO3 − in the residual solution can also be mineralized by Mg2+ through the second carbonation process. Meanwhile, pure CaCO3 and MgCO3·3H2O, which have the possible benefit of reuse, can be obtained as by-products. Then, more variables were set to optimize the technical conditions to enhance the decalcification rate and carbon sequestration ratio, reduce the reaction time during the first mineralization and attempt to realize the combination of HCO3 − and Mg2+ by adding NaOH to produce MgCO3·3H2O as another by-product in a moderate environment during the second mineralization.
