Abstract:Reconstruction closings have all properties of a physical flooding of a topographic surface. They are precious for simplifying gradient images or, filling unwanted catchment basins, on which a subsequent watershed transform extracts the targeted objects. Flooding a topographic surface may be modeled as flooding a node weighted graph (TG), with unweighted edges, the node weights representing the ground level. The progression of a flooding may also be modeled on the region adjacency graph (RAG) of a topographic surface. On a RAG each node represents a catchment basin and edges connect neighboring nodes. The edges are weighted by the altitude of the pass point between both adjacent regions. The graph is flooded from sources placed at the marker positions and each node is assigned to the source by which it has been flooded. The level of the flood is represented on the nodes on each type of graphs. The same flooding may thus be modeled on a TG or on a RAG. We characterize all valid floodings on both types of graphs, as they should verify the laws of hydrostatics. We then show that each flooding of a node weighted graph also is a flooding of an edge weighted graph with appropriate edge weights. The highest flooding under a ceiling function may be interpreted as the shortest distance to the root for the ultrametric flooding distance in an augmented graph. The ultrametric distance between two nodes is the minimal altitude of a flooding for which both nodes are flooded. This remark permits to flood edge or node weighted graphs by using shortest path algorithms. It appears that the collection of all lakes of a RAG has the structure of a dendrogram, on which the highest flooding under a ceiling function may be rapidly found.

Abstract:We study hierarchical segmentation in the framework of edge-weighted graphs. We define ultrametric watersheds as topological watersheds null on the minima. We prove that there exists a bijection between the set of ultrametric watersheds and the set of hierarchical segmentations. We end this paper by showing how to use the proposed framework in practice in the example of constrained connectivity; in particular it allows to compute such a hierarchy following a classical watershed-based morphological scheme, which provides an efficient algorithm to compute the whole hierarchy.

Abstract:The node-weighted Steiner tree problem is a variation of classical Steiner minimum tree problem. Given a graph G=(V,E) with node weight function C:V→R+and a subset X of V, the node-weighted Steiner tree problem is to find a Steiner tree for the set X such that its total weight is minimum. In this paper, we study this problem in unit disk graphs and present a (1+Ε)-approximation algorithm for any Ε>0, when the given set of vertices is c-local. As an application, we use node-weighted Steiner tree to solve the node-weighted connected dominating set problem in unit disk graphs and obtain a (5+Ε)-approximation algorithm. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract:Given a node-weighted graph, the minimum-weighted dominating set (MWDS) problem is to find a minimum-weighted vertex subset such that, for any vertex, it is contained in this subset or it has a neighbor contained in this set. And the minimum-weighted connected dominating set (MWCDS) problem is to find a MWDS such that the graph induced by this subset is connected. In this paper, we study these two problems on a unit disk graph. A (4 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWDS based on a dynamic programming algorithm for a Min-Weight Chromatic Disk Cover is presented. Meanwhile, we also propose a (1 +ε)-approximation algorithm for the connecting part by showing a polynomial-time approximation scheme for a Node-Weighted Steiner Tree problem when the given terminal set is c-local and thus obtain a (5 +ε)-approximation algorithm for an MWCDS.
The steepest watershed: from graphs to images

Abstract:The watershed is a powerful tool for segmenting objects whose contours appear as crest lines on a gradient image. The watershed transform associates to a topographic surface a partition into catchment basins, defined as attraction zones of a drop of water falling on the relief and following a line of steepest descent. Unfortunately, catchment basins may overlap and do not form a partition. Moreover, current watershed algorithms, being shortsighted, do not correctly estimate the steepness of the downwards trajectories and overestimate the overlapping zones of catchment basins. An arbitrary division of these zones between adjacent catchment basin results in a poor localization of the contours. We propose an algorithm without myopia, which considers the total length of a trajectory for estimating its steepness. We first consider topographic surfaces defined on node weighted graphs. The graphs are pruned in order to eliminate all downwards trajectories which are not the steepest. An iterative algorithm with simple neighborhood operations performs the pruning and constructs the catchment basins. The algorithm is then adapted to gray tone images. The graph structure itself is encoded as an image thanks to the fixed neighborhood structure of grids. A pair of adaptative erosions and dilations prune the graph and extend the catchment basins. As a result one obtains a precise detection of the catchment basins and a graph of the steepest trajectories. A last iterative algorithm allows to follow selected downwards trajectories in order to detect particular structures such as rivers or thalweg lines of the topographic surface.

Abstract:Any watershed, when defined on a stack on a normal pseudomanifold of dimension d, is a pure (d -- 1)-subcomplex that satisfies a drop-of-water principle. In this paper, we introduce Morse stacks, a class of functions that are equivalent to discrete Morse functions. We show that the watershed of a Morse stack on a normal pseudomanifold is uniquely defined, and can be obtained with a linear-time algorithm relying on a sequence of collapses. Last, we prove that such a watershed is the cut of the unique minimum spanning forest, rooted in the minima of the Morse stack, of the facet graph of the pseudomanifold.

Abstract:What is the best way to divide a rugged landscape? Since ancient times, watersheds separating adjacent water systems that flow, for example, toward different seas, have been used to delimit boundaries. Interestingly, serious and even tense border disputes between countries have relied on the subtle geometrical properties of these tortuous lines. For instance, slight and even anthropogenic modifications of landscapes can produce large changes in a watershed, and the effects can be highly nonlocal. Although the watershed concept arises naturally in geomorphology, where it plays a fundamental role in water management, landslide, and flood prevention, it also has important applications in seemingly unrelated fields such as image processing and medicine. Despite the far-reaching consequences of the scaling properties on watershed-related hydrological and political issues, it was only recently that a more profound and revealing connection has been disclosed between the concept of watershed and statistical physics of disordered systems. This review initially surveys the origin and definition of a watershed line in a geomorphological framework to subsequently introduce its basic geometrical and physical properties. Results on statistical properties of watersheds obtained from artificial model landscapes generated with long-range correlations are presented and shown to be in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with real landscapes.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 397-418, March 2024. We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Abstract:If the nodes of a graph are considered to be identical barrels - featuring different water levels - and the edges to be (locked) water-filled pipes in between the barrels, consider the optimization problem of how much the water level in a fixed barrel can be raised with no pumps available, i.e. by opening and closing the locks in an elaborate succession. This model is related to an opinion formation process, the so-called Deffuant model. We consider i.i.d. random initial water levels and ask whether the supremum of achievable levels at a given node has a degenerate distribution, i.e. concentrates on a single value. This turns out to be the case for all infinite connected quasi-transitive graphs with exactly one exception: the two-sided infinite path.

Abstract:This paper focuses on extensions of the classic Erdős-Gallai Theorem for the set of weighted function of each edge in a graph. The weighted function of an edge $e$ of an $n$-vertex uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is defined to a special function with respect to the number of edges of the longest Berge path containing $e$. We prove that the summation of the weighted function of all edges is at most $n$ for an $n$-vertex uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ and characterize all extremal hypergraphs that attain the value, which strengthens and extends the hypergraph version of the classic Erdős-Gallai Theorem.

Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.

Abstract:A weighted coloured-edge graph is a graph for which each edge is assigned both a positive weight and a discrete colour, and can be used to model transportation and computer networks in which there are multiple transportation modes. In such a graph paths are compared by their total weight in each colour, resulting in a Pareto set of minimal paths from one vertex to another. This paper will give a tight upper bound on the cardinality of a minimal set of paths for any weighted coloured-edge graph. Additionally, a bound is presented on the expected number of minimal paths in weighted bicoloured-edge graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study extremal values for the determinant of the weighted graph Laplacian under simple nondegeneracy conditions on the weights. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the determinant of the Laplacian to be bounded away from zero and for the existence of a minimizing set of weights. These conditions are given both in terms of properties of random spanning trees and in terms of a type of density on graphs. These results generalize and extend the work of [7].

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $\mathcal{S}$ be a subset of $Z$. A vertex-coloring $\mathcal{S}$-edge-weighting of $G$ is an assignment of weights by the elements of $\mathcal{S}$ to each edge of $G$ so that adjacent vertices have different sums of incident edges weights. It was proved that every 3-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal{S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal{S} = \{1,2 \}$ (H. Lu, Q. Yu and C. Zhang, Vertex-coloring 2-edge-weighting of graphs, European J. Combin., 32 (2011), 22-27). In this paper, we show that every 2-connected and 3-edge-connected bipartite graph admits a vertex-coloring $\mathcal{S}$-edge-weighting for $\mathcal{S} \in \{ \{ 0,1 \} , \{1,2 \} \}$. These bounds we obtain are tight, since there exists a family of infinite bipartite graphs which are 2-connected and do not admit vertex-coloring $\mathcal{S}$-edge-weightings for $\mathcal{S} \in \{ \{ 0,1 \} , \{1,2 \} \}$.

Abstract:We explicitly describe cellular minimal free resolutions of certain classes of edge ideals of weighted complete bipartite graphs based on a construction of Visscher. Specifically, we show that Visscher's construction minimally resolves all edge ideals of undirected vertex-weighted complete bipartite graphs, and we characterize the edge-weighted complete bipartite graphs whose edge ideals are minimally resolved by Visscher's construction.

Abstract:Community detection in networks refers to the process of seeking strongly internally connected groups of nodes which are weakly externally connected. In this work, we introduce and study a community definition based on internal edge density. Beginning with the simple concept that edge density equals number of edges divided by maximal number of edges, we apply this definition to a variety of node and community arrangements to show that our definition yields sensible results. Our community definition is equivalent to that of the Absolute Potts Model community detection method (Phys. Rev. E 81, 046114 (2010)), and the performance of that method validates the usefulness of our definition across a wide variety of network types. We discuss how this definition can be extended to weighted, and multigraphs, and how the definition is capable of handling overlapping communities and local algorithms. We further validate our definition against the recently proposed Affiliation Graph Model (arXiv:1205.6228 [cs.SI]) and show that we can precisely solve these benchmarks. More than proposing an end-all community definition, we explain how studying the detailed properties of community definitions is important in order to validate that definitions do not have negative analytic properties. We urge that community definitions be separated from community detection algorithms and propose that community definitions be further evaluated by criteria such as these.

Abstract:In view of the node importance in weighted networks, weighted expected method (WEM), was proposed in this paper, which take an advantages of uncertain graph algorithm. First, a weight processing method is proposed based on the relationship between the weight of edges and the intensity of contact between nodes, and the calculation method of the contribution of the weight of edges to the node importance is defined, even if there are two converse situations in the reality. Then, because of the use of dynamic programming method, which reduces the complexity of computational time to a linear level, WEM will be more suitable for the calculation in large weighted networks. Owning to its features of calculating, WEM can, to the greatest extent, ensure a precise order of node essential scores for each node. The node connectivity experiment and SIR simulation experiment show that the WEM has higher accuracy and relatively low time complexity.
