Abstract:Fields with frequencies below megahertz are challenging for Rydberg-atom-based measurements, due to the low-frequency electric field screening effect that is caused by the alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on the inner surface of the container. In this paper, we investigate on electric fields measurements in the ULF, VLF and LF bands in a Cs vapor cell with built-in parallel electrodes. With optimization of the applied DC field, we achieve high-sensitive detection of the electric field at frequencies of 1kHz, 10kHz and 100kHz based on Rydberg-atom sensor, with the minimum electric field strength down to 18.0{\mu}V/cm, 6.9{\mu}V/cm and 3.0{\mu}V/cm, respectively. The corresponding sensitivity is 5.7 {\mu}V/cm/{\sqrt{Hz}}, 2.2{\mu}V/cm/{\sqrt{Hz}} and 0.95{\mu}V/cm/{\sqrt{Hz}} for ULF, VLF and LF fields, which is better than 1-cm dipole antenna. Besides, the linear dynamic range of Rydberg-atom sensor is over 50 dB. This work presents the potential to enable more applications that utilize atomic sensing technology in ULF, VLF and LF fields.

Abstract:Rydberg atoms have great potential in electric field measurement and have an advantage with a large frequency bandwidth from the kHz to the THz scale. However, the sensitivity for measuring a weak MHz electric field signal is limited by the spectroscopic resolution, because the weak electric field induces only a small perturbation of the population and energy-level shift of the Rydberg atoms. Here, we report highly sensitive measurement of a weak MHz electric field using electromagnetically induced transparency with Rydberg atoms in a thermal atomic system. Using the heterodyne method on a 30-MHz electric field, we successfully measure the minimum electric field strength to be 37.3μV/cm with a sensitivity up to −65 dBm/Hz and a linear dynamic range over 65 dB. Additionally, we measure an amplitude-modulated signal and demodulate the signal with a fidelity over 98%. This work extends the sensitivity of atomic sensors for measuring MHz electric fields, which advances atomic electric field-sensing technology. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.18.014045 © 2022 American Physical Society

Super low-frequency electric field measurement based on Rydberg atoms

Abstract:We demonstrate the measurement of super low-frequency electric field using Rydberg atoms in an atomic vapor cell with inside parallel electrodes, thus overcoming the low-frequency electric-field-screening effect at frequencies below a few kHz. Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra involving 52D5/2 state is employed to measure the signal electric field. An auxiliary DC field is applied to improve the sensitivity. A DC Stark map is demonstrated, where the utilized 52D5/2 exhibits mj = 1/2, 3/2, 5/2 Stark shifts and splittings. The mj = 1/2 state is employed to detect the signal field because of its larger polarizability than that of mj = 3/2, 5/2. Also, we show that the strength of the spectrum is dependent on the angle between the laser polarizations and the electric field. With optimization of the applied DC field to shift the mj = 1/2 Rydberg energy level to a high sensitivity region and the laser polarizations to obtain the maximum mj = 1/2 signal, we achieve the detection of the signal electric field with a frequency of 100 Hz down to 214.8 µV/cm with a sensitivity of 67.9 µV cm-1Hz-1/2, and the linear dynamic range is over 37 dB. Our work extends the measurement frequency of Rydberg sensors to super low frequency with high sensitivity, which has the advantages of high sensitivity and miniaturization for receiving super low frequency.
Atomic Quantum Sensor for Ultralow-Frequency Electric Field Measurements

Abstract:Rydberg-assisted atomic electrometry with thermal vapors offers a promising approach for detecting external electric fields. This technique, however, has proven quite challenging for measuring low frequencies because of the effects of metal-alkali atoms absorbing on the interior surface of the vacuum enclosure. We apply high-contrast Rydberg-electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) spectroscopy to investigate the impact systematically, including laser power and electric field. Our system enhances frequency measurements below 10 Hz, demonstrating significant progress in improving the performance of Rydberg atomic electrometry. Consequently, our study reveals a standard quantum limit for data capacity and experimentally illustrates it across bandwidths ranging from 10 Hz to 1 MHz. This study provides valuable insights for future precision measurements and field sensing applications.

Ultrasensitive charge detection utilizing coupled nonlinear micromechanical resonators

Abstract: Since the discovery of electrons, an accurate detection of electrical charges has been the dream of scientific community. Due to some remarkable advantages, micro/nano-electromechanical systems (M/NEMS) based resonators have been used to design electrometers with exquisite sensitivity and resolution. Inevitably, some limits including requisite ultra-low environmental temperature, complicated resonator structure and measurement circuit, required linear dynamic response, will cause a gap with respect to practical application. Here, we demonstrate a novel ultra-sensitive charge detection based on the linear dependence of peak frequency drift on the coupling voltage variation of two coupled nonlinear micromechanical resonators. We achieved ultra-high resolution of 2.051E-3 fC (about 13 electrons) of charge detection at the room temperature. We also show an extra application of this device for weak and ultra-low-frequency (ULF) signal detection. Our findings provide a simple strategy for measuring electron charges in an extreme accuracy and developing electrometers in smaller sizes.
RF E-field enhanced sensing based on Rydberg-atom-based superheterodyne receiver

Abstract:We present enhanced sensing of radio frequency (RF) electric fields (E-fields) by the combined polarizability of Rydberg atoms and the optimized local oscillator (LO) fields of supergheterodyne receiving. Our modified theoretical model reveals the dependencies of sensitivity of E-field amplitude measurement on the polarizability of Rydberg states and the strength of the LO RF field. The enhanced sensitivity of megahertz(MHz) E-field are demonstrated at an optimal LO field for three different Rydberg states $\rm 43D_{5/2}$, $\rm 60S_{1/2}$, and $\rm 90S_{1/2}$. The sensitivity of 63 MHz for the $\rm 90S_{1/2}$ state reaches 0.96 $\mu \rm V/cm/\sqrt{Hz}$ that is about an order of magnitude higher than those already published. This result closely approaches the theoretical sensitivity limit of RF dipole antennas, and indicates the potential for breaking the limit in measuring sub-MHz E-fields. This atomic sensor based on Rydberg Stark effect with heterodyne technique is expected to boost an alternative solution to electric dipole antennas.

Abstract:Quantum sensing based on Rydberg atoms is an emerging technology for electric-field measurement. Theoretical and numerical studies were generally limited by the many-body effect in atomic ensembles. In this work, we initially derived a many-body dynamic equation by incorporating the Rydberg- Rydberg interaction into the four-level optical Bloch equation. Particularly, we proposed a fast steady-state solution as an alternative to the transient one. As a result, we ingeniously replaced the computationally expensive matrix operations with a linearly iterative process, enabling rapid convergence within few steps while considering the Doppler frequency shift. This approach made it possible to simulate the interaction of 7000 atoms in less than a minute. Based on the many-body model, we investigated the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler- Townes (AT) splitting under varying atomic gas densities; and compared the numerical results with experimental data. The comparison revealed a relatively-low error of 4.59% for the EITAT simulation by the many-body model. Moreover, we found that the linear dynamic range of the quantum sensing shrinks when considering the many-body interaction.

Abstract:The high polarizabilities of Rydberg atoms enable multi-dimensional parameter measurements of electromagnetic fields. In this paper we report an atomic antenna by employing Rydberg atoms in room-temperature cesium vapor cell. We employ the cascade-type two-photon excitation electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectroscopy to measure the Rydberg energy levels. EIT is a destructive interference effect with a narrow linewidth, and it can be used to detect a small electric field by Autler-Townes splitting or Stark shifts. In experiments, a low-frequency electric field with ~kHz frequency is introduced by using built-in electrode technique in the room-temperature atomic gas cell. The interaction between Rydberg atom and electric field induces the Stark shifts, where the electric field amplitude is converted into the corresponding two-photon detuning by EIT effect. Furthermore, the low-frequency electric field amplitude is converted into the corresponding intensity signal of probe beam in EIT spectroscopy, that allow to measure the electric field frequencies. Under weak electric field conditions, there is an approximate linear relationship between EIT transmission signal and input electric field amplitude, which enables to detect waveform, amplitude, and frequency parameter. We have demonstrated an atomic antenna with optical probing method. The EIT effect allows increasing the response bandwidth from ~MHz to hundreds of MHz with increasing the probe beam and coupling beam power. Under this condition, the EIT spectroscopy can extend a measure bandwidth to ~MHz, that will provide a scalable approach for high-frequency electric fields.

Abstract:Applied Physics Letters, Volume 120, Issue 20, May 2022. We investigate the use of a split-ring resonator (SRR) incorporated with an atomic-vapor cell to improve the sensitivity and the minimal detectable electric (E) field of Rydberg atom-based sensors. In this approach, a sub-wavelength SRR is placed around an atomic vapor-cell filled with cesium atoms for E-field measurements at 1.3 GHz. The SRR provides a factor of 100 in the enhancement of the E-field measurement sensitivity. Using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with Aulter–Townes splitting, E-field measurements down to 5 mV/m are demonstrated with the SRR, while in the absence of the SRR, the minimal detectable field is 500 mV/m. We demonstrate that by combining EIT with a heterodyne Rydberg atom-based mixer approach, the SRR allows for a sensitivity of 5.5 μV/m[math], which is two-orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity than when the SRR is not used.

Abstract:Highly sensitive phase- and frequency-resolved detection of microwave electric fields is of central importance in a wide range of fields, including cosmology<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR2">2</a>, meteorology<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR3">3</a>, communication<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR4">4</a> and microwave quantum technology<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR5">5</a>. Atom-based electrometers<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR7">7</a> promise traceable standards for microwave electrometry, but their best sensitivity is currently limited to a few μV cm−1 Hz−1/2 (refs. <a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR9">9</a>) and they only yield information about the field amplitude and polarization<a href="/articles/s41567-020-0918-5#ref-CR10">10</a>. Here, we demonstrate a conceptually new microwave electric field sensor—the Rydberg-atom superheterodyne receiver (superhet). The sensitivity of this technique scales favourably, achieving even 55 nV cm−1 Hz−1/2 with a modest set-up. The minimum detectable field of 780 pV cm−1 is three orders of magnitude smaller than what can be reached by existing atomic electrometers. The Rydberg-atom superhet allows SI-traceable measurements, reaching uncertainty levels of 10−8 V cm−1 when measuring a sub-μV cm−1 field, which has been inaccessible so far with atomic sensors. Our method also enables phase and frequency detection. In sensing Doppler frequencies, sub-μHz precision is reached for fields of a few hundred nV cm−1. This work is a first step towards realizing electromagnetic-wave quantum sensors with quantum projection noise-limited sensitivity. Such a device will impact diverse areas like radio astronomy, radar technology and metrology.

Abstract:Microwave sensing has important applications in areas such as data communication and remote sensing, so it has received much attention from international academia, industry, and governments. Atomic wireless sensing uses the strong response of the large electric dipole moment of a Rydberg atom to an external field to achieve precise measurement of a radio frequency (RF) electric field. This has advantages over traditional wireless sensing. The advantage of a Rydberg atom is its ultra-wide energy level transitions, which make it responsive to RF electric fields over a wide bandwidth. Here, we briefly review the progress of electric field measurement based on Rydberg atoms. The main contents include the properties of Rydberg atoms, measurement using Rydberg atoms, and experimental progress in electric field measurement in different bands. We show the different methods for detecting electric fields such as atomic superheterodyne, machine learning, and critically enhanced measurement. The development of Rydberg atomic measurement focuses on the advantages of Rydberg atomic sensing, especially compared with conventional microwave receivers. This is of major significance to developing Rydberg-based measurement in astronomy, remote sensing, and other fields.

Abstract:Rydberg atom-based radio frequency electromagnetic field sensors are drawing wide-spread interest because of their unique properties, such as small size, dielectric construction, and self-calibration. These photonic sensors use lasers to prepare atoms and read out the atomic response to a radio frequency electromagnetic field based on electromagnetically induced transparency, or related phenomena. Much of the theoretical work has focused on the Autler-Townes splitting induced by the radio frequency wave. The amplitude regime, where the change in transmission observed on resonance is measured to determine electric field strength, has received less attention. In this paper, we deliver analytic expressions that are useful for calculating the absorption coefficient and sensitivity in the amplitude regime. We describe the approximations that we applied to obtain the analytic expressions and demonstrate their validity over a large range of the interesting parameter space. The effect of the thermal motion of the atoms is explicitly addressed. Residual Doppler shifts are shown to limit sensitivity. An analytic expression for the amplitude regime of Rydberg atom-based sensing has not, to our knowledge, been obtained previously. The expressions, approximations and descriptions presented in the paper are important for maximizing the sensitivity of Rydberg atom-based sensors and for providing insight into the physics of multi-level interference phenomena.

Abstract:Rydberg atoms hold particular appeal for applications in electrometry due to their large transition electric dipole moments and huge polarizability, which lead to a strong atomic response to electric fields. In radio-frequency (RF) fields, the Rydberg levels are AC stark shift and splitting, which can realize the study of high-sensitivity electric field sensor of Rydberg atoms. In this work, we use the simpler Shirley's time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian model to calculate the AC Stark energy spectrum of Cs Rydberg atoms. This model can reduce the basis of Hamiltonian to only include those Rydberg states that have direct dipole-allowed transitions with the target state, significantly improving the speed of computation. The accuracy of the calculation is proved by fitting with the calculated frequency shift of DC Stark energy levels in the weak fields, and the polarizability of 60D 5/2 and 70D 5/2 Rydberg atomic states is obtained by fitting with the measured ion spectra of DC Stark Cs ultra-cold Rydberg atoms in magneto-optical trap. In addition, we calculate the AC Stark shift of Cs Rydberg atom |60 D 5/2 , m j =1/2> state in different frequency electric fields with ε = 100 mV/m. Rydberg atom provide a structured spectrum of sensitivity to electric fields due to strong resonant and off-resonant interactions with many dipole-allowed transitions to nearby Rydberg states. This structure of the frequency response has important implications for a wideband sensor. And we calculate the sensitivity and the scaling of the signal-to-noise ratio, β, varying with detuning from the |60 D 5/2 >→|61 P 3/2 > transition. The value of β allows one to use the results for any Rydberg state sensor to determine the SNR for any E in a 1s measurement. Therefrom, Rydberg sensor can preferentially detect many RF frequencies spread across its carrier spectral range without modification while effectively rejecting large portions where the atom response is significantly weaker, and the signal depends primarily on the detuning of the RF field to the nearest resonance which does not convey the RF frequency directly.

Abstract:Recent advances in Rydberg-atom electrometry detail promising applications in radio frequency communications. Presently, most applications use carrier frequencies greater than 1 GHz where resonant Autler–Townes splitting provides the highest sensitivity. This letter documents a series of experiments with Rydberg atomic sensors to collect and process waveforms from the automated identification system (AIS) used in maritime navigation in the very high frequency (VHF) band. Detection in this band is difficult with conventional resonant Autler–Townes based Rydberg sensing and requires a new approach. We show the results of a method called high angular momentum matching excited Raman (HAMMER), which enhances low frequency detection and exhibits superior sensitivity compared to the traditional AC Stark effect. From measurements of electromagnetically induced transparency in rubidium and cesium vapor cells, we show the relationship between incident electric field strength and observed signal-to-noise ratio and find that the sensitivity of the HAMMER scheme in rubidium achieved an equivalent single VHF tone sensitivity of 100μV/m/Hz. With these results, we estimate the usable range of the atomic vapor cell antenna for AIS waveforms given current technology and detection techniques.

Abstract:Rydberg atom-based superheterodyne with additional local oscillator (LO) signal is a novel approach to detect electric field with high measured sensitivity. However, the LO signal is often supplied to the atomic vapor cell by free-space illumination, which lacks mobility and integration for practical applications. Here, we present a LO port integrated split-ring resonator for realizing high sensitivity-enhanced electric field measurements. The LO signal is sent directly to the resonator through a parallel-plate waveguide, which is shown to achieve a sensitivity enhancement of 32 dB. The integrated resonator has an electrical size of 0.088 λ and the feed port S11 reaches −38.2 dB.

Abstract:Rydberg atoms-based electric field sensing has developed rapidly over the past decade. A variety of theoretical proposals and experiment configurations are suggested and realized to improve the measurement metrics, such as intensity sensitivity, bandwidth, phase, and accuracy. The Stark effect and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) or electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) are fundamental physics principles behind the stage. Furthermore, various techniques such as amplitude- or frequency-modulation, optical homodyne read-out, microwave superheterodyne and frequency conversion based on multi-wave mixing in atoms are utilized to push the metrics into higher levels. In this review, different technologies and the corresponding metrics they had achieved were presented, hoping to inspire more possibilities in the improvement of metrics of Rydberg atom-based electric field sensing and broadness of application scenarios.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a Rydberg atom-based radio frequency (RF) sensor that utilizes an atomic homodyne technique to determine the amplitude-modulation (AM) frequency. By detuning the local oscillator (LO) field frequency to the same carrier frequency of the signal (SIG), the AM frequency can be demodulated in both resonant and off-resonant regions. Here we investigate the effect of the phase difference between the LO and the SIG fields on the sensing capability. Due to the presence of the LO field, the sensitivity of the atomic sensor improves by 14.2 dB and 20.3 dB in the resonant and off-resonant regions, respectively. In addition, the AM response bandwidth and linear dynamic range of the atomic sensor in both resonant and off-resonant regions are also studied. In principle, the proposed atomic sensor has the potential to demodulate the envelope frequency of AM waves in a broadband and continuous frequency range, making it a promising candidate for the next-generation RF sensors.

Abstract:Recent advances in Rydberg atom electrometry detail promising applications in radio frequency (RF) communications. Presently, most applications use carrier frequencies greater than 1~GHz where resonant Autler-Townes splitting provides the highest sensitivity. This letter documents a series of experiments with Rydberg atomic sensors to collect and process waveforms from the automated identification system (AIS) used in maritime navigation in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band. Detection in this band is difficult with conventional resonant Autler-Townes based Rydberg sensing and requires a new approach. We show the results from a new method called High Angular Momentum Matching Excited Raman (HAMMER), which enhances low frequency detection and exhibits superior sensitivity compared to the traditional AC Stark effect. From measurements of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium and cesium vapor cells, we show the relationship between incident electric field strength and observed signal-to-noise ratio and find that the sensitivity of the HAMMER scheme in rubidium achieved an equivalent single VHF tone sensitivity of $\mathrm{100~\mu V/m/\sqrt{Hz}}$. With these results, we estimate the usable range of the atomic vapor cell antenna for AIS waveforms given current technology and detection techniques.
