Abstract:The exploitation of the bandwidth portions in the millimeter wave domain, namely extremely high frequencies (EHFs) will open new perspectives to future satellite services, in particular for high quality TV broadcasting and multimedia content delivery. The present work aims at surveying the opportunities and challenges of EHF exploitation for broadband satellite applications in the broadcast framework. Theoretical capacity evaluation confirms that EHF satellite links can offer unprecedented data-rates, clearly superior than that actually provided by Ku and Ka-bands. However, some crucial issues are still to be solved, mainly in terms of mitigation of tropospheric propagation impairments and appropriate waveform design. Link and capacity analysis will be the basis for the investigation of future application scenarios of broadcast EHF satcoms, namely high-definition TV (HDTV) and ultra-HDTV, with particular emphasis to 4K and 8K video formats.

Abstract:As a solution to the most critical problems with Solar power Satellite (SPS) development, a system is proposed which uses laser power transmission in space to a receiver high in the atmosphere that relays the power to Earth by either cable or microwave power transmission. It has been shown in the past that such hybrid systems have the advantages of a reduction in the mass of equipment required in geostationary orbit and avoidance of radio frequency interference with other satellites and terrestrial communications systems. The advantage over a purely laser power beam SPS is that atmospheric absorption is avoided and outages due to clouds and precipitation will not occur, allowing for deployment in the equatorial zone and guaranteeing year round operation. This proposal is supported by brief literature surveys and theoretical calculations to estimate crucial parameters in this paper.In relation to this concept, we build on a recently proposed method to collect solar energy by a tethered balloon at high altitude because it enables a low-cost start for bringing the first Watt of power to Earth giving some quick return on investment, which is desperately missing in the traditional SPS concept.To tackle the significant problem of GW-class SPSs of high launch cost per kg mass brought to space, this paper introduces a concept which aims to achieve a superior power over mass ratio compared to traditional satellite designs by the use of thin-film solar cells combined with optical fibres for power delivery. To minimise the aperture sizes and cost of the transmitting and receiving components of the satellite and high altitude receiver, closed-loop laser beam pointing and target tracking is crucial for pointing a laser beam onto a target area that is of similar size to the beam's diameter. A recently developed technique based on optical phase conjugation is introduced and its applicability for maintaining power transmission between the satellite and high altitude receiver is assessed.It was found that the design of the high altitude receiver and the means of transporting the received power through the lower 21km of the atmosphere are inextricably linked. It was concluded that an initial small scale low-cost demonstration flight of the receiver that delivers power using existing technology could be undertaken in the near future.

Towards Space Solar Power - Examining Atmospheric Interactions of Power Beams with the HAARP Facility

Abstract:In the most common space solar power (SSP) system architectures, solar energy harvested by large satellites in geostationary orbit is transmitted to Earth via microwave radiation. Currently, only limited information about the interactions of microwave beams with energy densities of several tens to hundreds of W/m$^2$ with the different layers of the atmosphere is available. Governmental bodies will likely require detailed investigations of safety and atmospheric effects of microwave power beams before issuing launch licenses for SSP satellite systems. This paper proposes to collect representative and comprehensive data of the interaction of power beams with the atmosphere by extending the infrastructure of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in Alaska, USA. Estimates of the transmission infrastructure performance as well as measurement devices and scientific capabilities of possible upgrade scenarios will be discussed. The proposed upgrade of the HAARP facility is expected to deliver a wealth of data and information which could serve as a decision base for governmental launch licensing of SSP satellites, and which can be used in addition to deepen public acceptance of SSP as a large-scale renewable energy source. Abstract:For decades, satellites have facilitated remote internet of things (IoT) services. However, the recent proliferation of increasingly capable sensors and a surge in the number deployed, has led to a substantial growth in the volume of data that needs to be transmitted via satellites. In response to this growing demand, free space optical communication systems have been proposed, as they allow for the use of large bandwidths of unlicensed spectrum, enabling high data rates. However, optical communications are highly vulnerable to weather-induced disruptions, thereby limiting their high potential. This paper proposes the use of high altitude platform station (HAPS) systems in conjunction with delay-tolerant networking techniques to increase the amount of data that can be transmitted to the ground from satellites when compared to the use of traditional ground station network architectures. The architectural proposal is evaluated in terms of delivery ratio and buffer occupancy, and the subsequent discussion analyzes the advantages, challenges and potential areas for future research.

Abstract:High throughput satellites (HTS), with their digital payload technology, are expected to play a key role as enablers of the upcoming 6G networks. HTS are mainly designed to provide higher data rates and capacities. Fueled by technological advancements including beamforming, advanced modulation techniques, reconfigurable phased array technologies, and electronically steerable antennas, HTS have emerged as a fundamental component for future network generation. This paper offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art of HTS systems, with a focus on standardization, patents, channel multiple access techniques, routing, load balancing, and the role of software-defined networking (SDN). In addition, we provide a vision for next-satellite systems that we named as extremely-HTS (EHTS) toward autonomous satellites supported by the main requirements and key technologies expected for these systems. The EHTS system will be designed such that it maximizes spectrum reuse and data rates, and flexibly steers the capacity to satisfy user demand. We introduce a novel architecture for future regenerative payloads while summarizing the challenges imposed by this architecture.

Abstract:The increasing demand for high-speed, large capacity data transmission between the earth and satellites may be solved by optical communications today. Otherwise, the satellite-to-earth communication will be constrained by the transmission bottleneck. Relevant researches have been done and resultfull achievements have been obtained, such as the Optical Communication Demonstration System, Optical Demonstration and High-speed Link Devices, STRV-2 Experiment, Geosynchronous Lightweight Technology Experiment (GeoLITE), and Mars Laser Communication Demonstration System (MLCD) developed by the US, as well as the laser communication experimental devices developed by Japan. Researches have also been conducted in China in the areas of Acquisition, Pointing and Tacking (APT), optical phased array and new types of satellite-to-earth communications. There are many problems that are expected to be solved in the future, such as how to improve APT performance, how to overcome the effect of space atmosphere, how to raise the data rate to Gigabit per second with low bit error rate, and how to link the satellite and earth optical networks.

Abstract:This paper studies the potential improvement in the achievable data rate available to ground users by integrating satellite, airborne, and terrestrial networks. The goal is to establish dynamic wireless services in remote or infrastructure-less areas. This integration uses high-altitude platforms in the exosphere, stratosphere, and troposphere for better altitude reuse coupled with emerging optical or other high-frequency directional transceivers. Hence they offer a significant increases in the scarce spectrum aggregate efficiency. However, managing resource allocation with deployment in this integrated system still has some difficulties. This paper aims to tackle resource management challenges by (i) providing wireless services to ground users in remote areas and connecting them with metropolitan and rural areas, (ii) employing high-altitude platforms (HAPs) equipped with free-space-optical communication modules for back-hauling backbone. Finally, we show how our results illustrate the advantages of using the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The explosive growth of the data traffic in future satellite communications can be leveraged by exploiting higher unlicensed spectrum band. In particular, Terahertz (THz) communication has been considered as a promising solution, since it can provide tens of GHz bandwidth. In addition, massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) with a very large antenna array can be used in THz communications to provide large array gain to compensate for severe signal attenuation. To this end, this paper analyzes a terahertz MIMO channel modeling and simulation method for massive antenna array based satellite-ground communications. Taking into account the molecular absorption noise, transmission path loss, and molecular reradiation effects of the terahertz channels under a variety of typical weather models, we evaluate the bit error rates (BERs) for different frequencies, communication distances and signal strengths. Numerical results validate the feasibility of the proposed modeling approach.
Analysis on Feasibility of High Power Microwave Weapons Attacking Satellite Payload

Abstract:The high power microwave(HPM) weapons are one of the recently developed direct energy weapons and are deemed to the biggest menace to the satellite payload in the future space control power fighting battle.Firstly,some key technologies and the path of technologies of HPM weapons are discussed in this paper.And then the mechanism of HPM damaging on the target and the path of HPM coupling to the satellite payload are presented.Finally,the feasibility of HPM weapons attacking the satellite payload is analyzed in detail based on the different path of HPM coupling.The computing results show that the electromagnet un-reinforcement satellite payload can be damaged by the HPM weapons in the condition of the high peak power level of HPM weapons or the short distance.

The Influence of Satellite Trails on H.E.S.S. Gamma-Ray Astronomical Observations

Abstract:The number of satellites launched into low earth orbit has almost tripled (to over 4000) in the last three years due to the increasing commercialisation of space. Satellite constellations with a total of over 400,000 satellites are proposed to be launched in the near future. Many of these satellites are highly reflective, resulting in a high optical brightness that affects ground-based astronomical observations across the electromagnetic spectrum. Despite this, the potential effect of these satellites on Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has so far been assumed to be negligible due to their nanosecond integration times. This has, however, never been verified. We aim to identify satellite trails in data taken by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) IACT array in Namibia, using Night Sky Background (NSB) data from the CT5 camera installed in 2019. We determine which observation times and pointing directions are affected the most, and evaluate the impact on Hillas parameters used for classification and reconstruction of high-energy Extensive Air Shower events. Finally, we predict how future planned satellite launches will affect gamma-ray observations with IACTs.

Abstract:Satellite constellation interference occurs across astronomical disciplines. We present examples of interference from radio and $\gamma$-Ray astronomy to optical and spectroscopic interference in ground-based and space-borne facilities. In particular, we discuss the impact of artificial satellites on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope, as well as possible mitigation strategies for the European Southern Observatory 4-metre Multi-Object Spectrograph Telescope (ESO 4MOST). Furthermore, we shed light on how ground-based optical telescopes such as the Oukaimeden Observatory contribute to IAU Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference (IAU CPS) efforts that quantify satellite brightness.

Abstract:The field of satellite communications is enjoying a renewed interest in the global telecom market, and very high throughput satellites (V/HTS), with their multiple spot-beams, are key for delivering the future rate demands. In this article, the state-of-the-art and open research challenges of signal processing techniques for V/HTS systems are presented for the first time, with focus on novel approaches for efficient interference mitigation. The main signal processing topics for the ground, satellite, and user segment are addressed. Also, the critical components for the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks are studied, such as cognitive satellite systems and satellite-terrestrial backhaul for caching. All the reviewed techniques are essential in empowering satellite systems to support the increasing demands of the upcoming generation of communication networks.

Abstract:Satellite-based QKD is currently being developed to revolutionize global cryptographic key exchange by facilitating secure communication among remote parties at a global scale. By overcoming the exponential loss of fiber transmission, satellite-to-Earth communication can seamlessly interconnect vast distances as the link budget of such links is sufficient to support QKD links. In terms of this direction, DV-QKD implementations seems to be technologically ahead since key exchange has been experimentally demonstrated to perform much more efficiently by providing key rates that are orders of magnitude higher compared to entanglement-based key exchange. However, the specific requirements to support effectively functional DV-QKD satellite-to-ground links are yet to be defined. This work attempts to define the satellite and ground segment system requirements needed in order to achieve functional QKD service for various satellites orbits (LEO, MEO, and GEO). Finite key size effects are being considered to determine the minimum block sizes that are required for secure key generation between a satellite node and a ground terminal for a single satellite pass. The atmospheric link channel is modeled with consideration of the most important degradation effects such as turbulence and atmospheric and pointing loss. Critical Tx and Rx system parameters, such as the source's intrinsic Quantum Bit Error Rate (iQBER), the Rx telescope aperture size, and detection efficiency, were investigated in order to define the minimum requirements to establish an operation satellite-to-ground QKD link under specific assumptions. The performance of each downlink scenario was evaluated for the wavelength of 1550 nm in terms of link availability, link budget, and in the distilling of secure key volumes over time. Finally, the feasibility and requirements for distributing the collected space photons via terrestrial telecom fibers was also studied and discussed, leading to the proposal of a more futuristic WDM-enabled satellite QKD architecture. This comprehensive analysis aims to contribute to the advancement and implementation of effective satellite-based QKD systems, which can further exploit the ground fiber segment to realize converged space/terrestrial QKD networks.

Abstract:Free-space radio-frequency (RF) communication links for intersatellite or satellite-to-ground communications are getting increasingly constraint by the insufficient spectrum availability and limited data rate of RF technology. With the advent of large satellite mega-constellation networks for global communications coverage, this limitation of classical RF communication becomes even more critical. Therefore, the establishment of point-to-point free-space optical link technology (FSO) in space will become of paramount importance in future systems, where the application will be for data-relays links, or for mega-constellations inter-satellite links, as well as for direct data downlinks, or from deep-space probes to ground. Further advantages of optical FSO—besides spectrum availability—is its increased power efficiency, higher data rates, avoidance of interference, and inherent protection against interception. When, however, these optical communication links have to pass through Earth's atmosphere, attenuation and scattering effects do influence the signal transmission. In this publication, we investigate the effects of atmospheric attenuation, including the effects of molecular absorption as well as aerosol scattering and absorption, for typical wavelength regions used for FSO, dependent on the link geometries. Based on transmission-simulation databases, we show useful spectral ranges and their specific attenuation strength. Free spectral transmission windows dependent on atmospheric quality and elevation angle are identified for reliable and efficient use of the optical transmission technology in space applications.

Abstract:The signals that will be received on Earth from deep-space probes in future implementations of free-space optical communication will be extremely weak, and new ground stations will have to be developed in order to support these links. This paper addresses the feasibility of using the technology developed in the gamma-ray telescopes that will make up the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory in the implementation of a new kind of ground station. Among the main advantages that these telescopes provide are the much larger apertures needed to overcome the power limitation that ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and optical communication both have. Also, the large number of big telescopes that will be built for CTA will make it possible to reduce costs by economy-scale production, enabling optical communications in the large telescopes that will be needed for future deep-space links.

Abstract:Satellite communications (SatComs) have recently entered a period of renewed interest motivated by technological advances and nurtured through private investment and ventures. The present survey aims at capturing the state of the art in SatComs, while highlighting the most promising open research topics. Firstly, the main innovation drivers are motivated, such as new constellation types, on-board processing capabilities, non-terrestrial networks and space-based data collection/processing. Secondly, the most promising applications are described, i.e., 5G integration, space communications, Earth observation, aeronautical and maritime tracking and communication. Subsequently, an in-depth literature review is provided across five axes: i) system aspects, ii) air interface, iii) medium access, iv) networking, v) testbeds & prototyping. Finally, a number of future challenges and the respective open research topics are described.

Abstract:The bottleneck of single satellite platform in antenna performance and in-orbit reconstruction capability makes it difficult to meet the needs of large capacity, high speed and anti-interference for future satellite communication systems. The introduction of Distributed Satellite Cluster (DSC) has brought about a new change in the way satellites are used. By transforming a single large satellite into a distributed system composed of multiple small satellites, satellite resources that independently distributed in adjacent space are integrated, thus enhancing the overall capability of the system. In this paper, based on DSC, the Spatial Ultra-Sparse Distributed Antenna (SUSDA) space-ground collaborative transmission architecture is proposed, which is helpful to promote the development and application of satellite distributed antennas, realize the joint cooperation of distributed loads. In particular, we consider the use of communication signal for sensing purpose. On this basis, we discuss the challenges and key technologies of SUSDA, and discuss the promising directions of this architecture.

Investigation on the UAV-To-Satellite Optical Communication Systems

Abstract:With the increasing demand on the data rate of high-definition (HD) remote detection using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), scientists have moved on from the technique of traditional microwave communication to the technique of optical communication. Through transmitting data to a geosynchronous orbit relay satellite at a high data rate, a UAV can release the storage capacity of its hard drive so as to immediately conduct a new round of HD photo shooting. In this case, we construct a theoretical model of a UAV-to-satellite optical communication system. To optimize the system performance, this paper analyzes the Doppler effect, the pointing error effect, and the atmospheric turbulence effect on the communication performance based on a theoretical study and numerical simulations. In terms of the Doppler effect, the extra background noise caused by slightly increasing the optical filter bandwidth at the receiver has a far weaker effect on the communication performance compared with the effects of atmospheric turbulence and pointing error. In terms of the effects of atmospheric turbulence and pointing error, we further analyze the key parameters of both uplink and downlink systems to better understand these effects. The numerical results can provide data references for practical system designs.
