Abstract:Anomalous diffusion of fluids in a restricted geometry which forbids passing of one fluid particle by another has been studied for many years. The detailed dependence of the mobility factor of the single-file diffusion on relevant parameters beyond the strictly one-dimensional limit is not well understood. In this paper, we study the mobility factor of single-file diffusion fluids interacting with a hard potential in two-dimensional pores. We present a rationale for a theory of the dynamic mobility in terms of the equilibrium equation of state, and make preliminary comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of hard discs in a channel.

Abstract:For a fixed bounded domain <math>D⊂RN</math> we investigate the asymptotic behaviour for large times of solutions to the p-Laplacian diffusion equation posed in a tubular domain<math>∂tu=Δpu in D×R,t>0</math> with <math>p>2</math>, i.e., the slow diffusion case, and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on the tube boundary. Passing to suitable re-scaled variables, we show the existence of a travelling wave solution in logarithmic time that connects the level <math>u=0</math> and the unique nonnegative steady state associated to the re-scaled problem posed in a lower dimension, i.e. in <math>D⊂RN</math>.We then employ this special wave to show that a wide class of solutions converge to the universal stationary profile in the middle of the tube and at the same time they spread in both axial tube directions, miming the behaviour of the travelling wave (and its reflection) for large times.The first main feature of our analysis is that wave fronts are constructed through a (nonstandard) combination of diffusion and absorbing boundary conditions, which gives rise to a sort of Fisher-KPP long-time behaviour. The second one is that the nonlinear diffusion term plays a crucial role in our analysis. Actually, in the linear diffusion framework <math>p=2</math> solutions behave quite differently.

The discrete dislocation dynamics of multiple dislocation loops

Abstract:We consider a nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation that physically arises from the classical Peierls-Nabarro model for dislocations in crystalline structures. Our initial configuration corresponds to multiple slip loop dislocations in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 2$. After suitably rescaling the equation with a small phase parameter $\varepsilon>0$, the rescaled solution solves a fractional Allen-Cahn equation. We show that, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, the limiting solution exhibits multiple interfaces evolving independently and according to their mean curvature.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is the fundamental theory of the non-uniform motion of dislocations in two and three space-dimensions. We investigate the non-uniform motion of an arbitrary distribution of dislocations, a dislocation loop and straight dislocations in infinite media using the theory of incompatible elastodynamics. The equations of motion are derived for non-uniformly moving dislocations. The retarded elastic fields produced by a distribution of dislocations and the retarded dislocation tensor potentials are determined. New fundamental key-formulae for the dynamics of dislocations are derived (Jefimenko type and Heaviside-Feynman type equations of dislocations). In addition, exact closed-form solutions of the elastic fields produced by a dislocation loop are calculated as retarded line integral expressions for subsonic motion. The fields of the elastic velocity and elastic distortion surrounding the arbitrarily moving dislocation loop are given explicitly in terms of the so-called three-dimensional elastodynamic Liénard-Wiechert tensor potentials. The two-dimensional elastodynamic Liénard-Wiechert tensor potentials and the near-field approximation of the elastic fields for straight dislocations are calculated. The singularities of the near-fields of accelerating screw and edge dislocations are determined.

Abstract:In this article, we study the long-time asymptotic properties of a non-linear and non-local equation of diffusive type which describes the rock-paper-scissors game in an interconnected population.We fully characterize the self-similar solution and then prove that the solution of the initial-boundary value problem converges to the self-similar profile with an algebraic rate.

However, the consistency between these two models is known only for a few number of dislocations or up to the first time at which two dislocations collide. In this paper we resolve these restrictions, and establish the consistency for any number of dislocations and without any restriction on their initial position or orientation. In more detail, the evolutive Peierls–Nabarro model which we consider describes the evolution of a phase-field function [math] which represents the atom deformation in a crystal. The model is a reaction-diffusion equation of Allen–Cahn type with the half-Laplacian. The small parameter [math] is the ratio between the atomic distance and the typical distance between phase transitions in [math]. The position of a phase transition determines the position of a dislocation, and the sign of the transition (up or down) determines the orientation. The goal of this paper is to derive the asymptotic behavior of the function [math] as [math] up to arbitrary end time [math]; in particular, beyond collisions. We prove that [math] converges to a piecewise constant function [math], whose jump points in the spatial variable satisfy the ODE system which represents discrete dislocation dynamics with annihilation. Our proof method is to explicitly construct and patch together several sub- and super-solutions of [math], and to show that they converge to the same limit [math].

Abstract:We consider a semi-linear integro-differential equation in dimension one associated to the half Laplacian %This model describes the evolution of phase transitions associated to dislocations. whose solution represents the atom dislocation in a crystal. The equation comprises the evolutive version of the classical Peierls-Nabarro model. We show that for a large number of dislocations, the solution, properly rescaled, converges to the solution of a well known equation called by Head \cite{H} "the equation of motion of the dislocation continuum". The limit equation is a model for the macroscopic crystal plasticity with density of dislocations. In particular, we recover the so called Orowan's law which states that dislocations move at a velocity proportional to the effective stress.

Homogenization of elasto-plastic evolutions driven by the flow of dislocations

Abstract:Starting from a prototypical model of elasto-plasticity in the small-strain and quasi-static setting, where the evolution of the plastic distortion is driven exclusively by the motion of discrete dislocations, this work performs a rigorous homogenization procedure to a model involving continuously-distributed dislocation fields. Our main result shows the existence of rate-independent evolutions driven by the motion of dislocation fields, obtained as limits of discrete dislocation evolutions. For all notions of solutions we employ the recent concepts of space-time integral and normal currents, which is richer than the classical approach using the Kröner dislocation density tensor. The key technical challenge is to find discrete dislocation evolutions approximating a given dislocation field evolution, which requires a careful recovery construction of space-time slip trajectories and associated displacements. These methods enable one to transfer the properties, most importantly the quasi-static stability, from the discrete to the field regime.

Abstract:We study the generalized Langevin equation approach to anomalous diffusion for a harmonic oscillator and a free particle driven by different forms of internal noises, such as power-law-correlated and distributed-order noises that fulfil generalized versions of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The mean squared displacement and the normalized displacement correlation function are derived for the different forms of the friction memory kernel. The corresponding overdamped generalized Langevin equations for these cases are also investigated. It is shown that such models can be used to describe anomalous diffusion in complex media, giving rise to subdiffusion, superdiffusion, ultraslow diffusion, strong anomaly, and other complex diffusive behaviors.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study singular solutions for a one-dimensional nonlinear diffusion equation. Due to slow diffusion near singular points, there exists a solution with a singularity at a prescribed position depending on time. To study properties of such singular solutions, we define a minimal singular solution as a limit of a sequence of approximate solutions with large Dirichlet data. Applying the comparison principle and the intersection number argument, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a singular solution for an initial-value problem, the profile near singular points and large-time behavior of solutions. We also give some results concerning the appearance of a burning core, convergence to traveling waves and the existence of an entire solution.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a nonlinear diffusion equation with the Neumann boundary condition, which was proposed by Nagylaki in [19] to describe the evolution of two types of genes in population genetics. For such a model, we obtain the existence of nontrivial solutions and the limiting profile of such solutions as the diffusion rate d -> 0 or d -> infinity. Our results show that as d -> 0, the location of nontrivial solutions relative to trivial solutions plays a very important role for the existence and shape of limiting profile. In particular, an example is given to illustrate that the limiting profile does not exist for some nontrivial solutions. Moreover, to better understand the dynamics of this model, we analyze the stability and bifurcation of solutions. These conclusions provide a different angle to understand that obtained in [17,21].

Abstract:Nonlinear diffusion is studied in the presence of multiplicative noise. The nonlinearity can be viewed as a ``wall'' limiting the motion of the diffusing field. A dynamic phase transition occurs when the system ``unbinds'' from the wall. Two different universality classes, corresponding to the cases of an ``upper'' and a ``lower'' wall, are identified and their critical properties are characterized. While the lower wall problem can be understood by applying the knowledge of linear diffusion with multiplicative noise, the upper wall problem exhibits an anomaly due to nontrivial dynamics in the vicinity of the wall. Broad power-law distribution is obtained throughout the bound phase.

Abstract:It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided. As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when the motion law is given by an $H^1$-type dissipation, and convergence to curve shortening flow in co-dimension $2$ for the usual $L^2$-dissipation is established. In the second scenario, existence and regularity are assumed while the $H^1$-gradient flow is treated in full generality (for short time). The methods developed here are a blueprint for the more physical setting of linearized isotropic elasticity.

Abstract:The article presents a novel variational calculus to analyze the stability and the propagation of chaos properties of nonlinear and interacting diffusions. This differential methodology combines gradient flow estimates with backward stochastic interpolations, Lyapunov linearization techniques as well as spectral theory. This framework applies to a large class of stochastic models including non homogeneous diffusions, as well as stochastic processes evolving on differentiable manifolds, such as constraint-type embedded manifolds on Euclidian spaces and manifolds equipped with some Riemannian metric. We derive uniform as well as almost sure exponential contraction inequalities at the level of the nonlinear diffusion flow, yielding what seems to be the first result of this type for this class of models. Uniform propagation of chaos properties w.r.t. the time parameter are also provided. Illustrations are provided in the context of a class of gradient flow diffusions arising in fluid mechanics and granular media literature. The extended versions of these nonlinear Langevin-type diffusions on Riemannian manifolds are also discussed.

Dynamical theory of topological defects I: the multivalued solution of the diffusion equation

Abstract:Point-like topological defects are singular configurations that occur in a variety of in and out of equilibrium systems with two-dimensional orientational order. As they are associated with a nonzero circuitation condition, the presence of defects induces a long-range perturbation of the orientation landscape around them. The effective dynamics of defects is thus generally described in terms of quasi-particles interacting through the orientation field they produce, whose evolution in the simplest setting is governed by the diffusion equation. Due to the multivalued nature of the orientation field, its expression for a defect moving with an arbitrary trajectory cannot be obtained straightforwardly and is often evaluated in the quasi-static approximation. Here, we instead propose an approach that allows to derive the exact expression for the orientation created by multiple moving defects, which we find to depend on their past trajectories and thus to be nonlocal in time. Performing various expansions in relevant regimes, we show how improved approximations with respect to the quasi-static defect solution can be obtained. Moreover, our results lead to so far unnoticed structures in the orientation field of moving defects which we discuss in light of existing experimental results.

Convergence of interaction-driven evolutions of dislocations with Wasserstein dissipation and slip-plane confinement

Abstract:We consider systems of $n$ parallel edge dislocations in a single slip system, represented by points in a two-dimensional domain; the elastic medium is modelled as a continuum. We formulate the energy of this system in terms of the empirical measure of the dislocations, and prove several convergence results in the limit $n\to\infty$. The main aim of the paper is to study the convergence of the evolution of the empirical measure as $n\to\infty$. We consider rate-independent, quasi-static evolutions, in which the motion of the dislocations is restricted to the same slip plane. This leads to a formulation of the quasi-static evolution problem in terms of a modified Wasserstein distance, which is only finite when the transport plan is slip-plane-confined. Since the focus is on interaction between dislocations, we renormalize the elastic energy to remove the potentially large self- or core energy. We prove Gamma-convergence of this renormalized energy, and we construct joint recovery sequences for which both the energies and the modified distances converge. With this augmented Gamma-convergence we prove the convergence of the quasi-static evolutions as $n\to\infty$.

Simulation of Stochastic Discrete Dislocation Dynamics in Ductile Vs Brittle Materials

Abstract:Defects are inevitable during the manufacturing processes of materials. Presence of these defects and their dynamics significantly influence the responses of materials. A thorough understanding of dislocation dynamics of different types of materials under various conditions is essential for analyzing the performance of the materials. Ductility of a material is directly related with the movement and rearrangement of dislocations under applied load. In this work, we look into the dynamics of dislocations in ductile and brittle materials using simplified two dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics (2D-DDD) simulation. We consider Aluminium (Al) and Tungsten (W) as representative examples of ductile and brittle materials respectively. We study the velocity distribution, strain field, dislocation count, and junction formation during interactions of the dislocations within the domain. Furthermore, we study the probability densities of dislocation motion for both materials. In mesoscale, moving dislocations can be considered as particle diffusionm, which are often stochastic and super-diffusive. Classical diffusion models fail to account for these phenomena and the long-range interactions of dislocations. Therefore, we propose the nonlocal transport model for the probability density and obtained the parameters of nonlocal operators using a machine learning framework.

Abstract:A degenerate nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation is considered; it can be understood as a porous medium equation whose pressure law is nonlinear and nonlocal. We show the existence of sign changing weak solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. Moreover, we construct explicit compactly supported self-similar solutions which generalize Barenblatt profiles --- the well-known solutions of the classical porous medium equation.
