Abstract:A generalized canonical form of action of dynamic theories with higher derivatives is proposed, which does not require the introduction of additional dynamic variables. This form is the initial point for the construction of quantum theory, in which the state of motion of the system is described by the wave functional on its trajectories in the configuration space, and the functional itself is an eigenvector of the action operator. The Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator is considered as the simplest model. For this case, the correspondence between the new form of quantum theory and "ordinary" quantum mechanics has been established in the local limit, when the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator is reduced to the "ordinary" harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:In this article, we demonstrate that the novel general theory of relativity, named `Entangled Relativity', is more economical than General Relativity in terms of universal dimensionful constants when both theories are considered through a path integral formulation. The sole parameter of Entangled Relativity is a quantum of energy squared. However, in order to recover standard Quantum Field Theory when gravity is neglected in the path integral, we show that this quantum of energy corresponds to the reduced Planck energy. But this result also implies that Planck's quantum of action $\hbar$ and Newton's constant $G$ are not fixed constants in this framework but vary proportionally to a gravitational scalar degree of freedom, akin to typical scalar-tensor and $f(R)$ theories. In particular, it is derived that $\hbar$ is proportional to $G$ in this framework. This establishes an explicit connection between the quantum and gravitational realms. Given the absence of a free parameter in the theory, we argue that this unique prediction can likely be probed observationally in the future. Furthermore, due to the deficit of dimensionful parameters in Entangled Relativity compared to standard physics, fundamental length or time scales cannot be defined within this framework. We argue that this aspect is expected to become significant in the non-perturbative quantum gravity regime of the theory.

Abstract:We show that the basic non-relativistic quantum formulations can be derived from a least observability principle. The principle extends the least action principle from classical mechanics by factoring in two assumptions. First, the Planck constant defines the discrete amount of action a physical object needs to exhibit during its dynamics in order to be observable. Second, there is constant vacuum fluctuation along a classical trajectory. A novel method is introduced to define the information metrics that measures additional observable information due to vacuum fluctuations, which is then converted to the additional action through the first assumption. Applying the variation principle to minimize the total actions allows us to elegantly recover the basic quantum formulations including the uncertainty relation and the Schrödinger equation in both position and momentum representations. Adding the no preferred representation assumption, we obtain the transformation formulation between position and momentum representations. The extended least action principle shows clearly how classical mechanics becomes quantum mechanics. Furthermore, it is a mathematical tool that can bring in new results. By defining the information metrics for vacuum fluctuations using more general definitions of relative entropy, we obtain a generalized Schrödinger equation that depends on the order of relative entropy. The principle can be applied to derive more advance quantum formalism such as quantum scalar field theory.

Abstract:One of the common features in all promising candidates of quantum gravity is the existence of a minimal length scale, which naturally emerges with a generalized uncertainty principle, or equivalently a modified commutation relation. Schwinger's quantum action principle was modified to incorporate this modification, and was applied to the calculation of the kernel of a free particle, partly recovering the result previously studied using path integral.

Abstract:The relativistic quantum equation is proposed for the complex wave function, which has the meaning of a probability amplitude. The Lagrangian formulation of the proposed theory is developed. The problem of spreading of a wave packet in an unlimited space is solved. The relativistic correction to the energy levels of a harmonic oscillator is found, leading to a violation of their equidistance.

Abstract:The Principle of Least Action is used with a simple Lagrangian density, involving second-order derivatives of the wave function, to obtain the Schroedinger equation. A Hamiltonian density obtained from this simple Lagrangian density shows that Hamilton's equations also give the Schroedinger equation. This simple Lagrangian density is equivalent to a standard Lagrangian density with first-order derivatives. For a time-independent system the Principle of Least Action reduces to the energy variational principle. For time-dependent systems the Principle of Least Action gives time-dependent approximations. Using a Hartree product trial wave function for a time-dependent many-boson system, we apply the Principle of Least Action to obtain the Gross-Pitaevskii equation that describes a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Abstract:A Euclidean formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics for systems of a finite number of degrees of freedom is discussed. Relativistic treatments of quantum theory are needed to study hadronic systems at subhadronic distance scales. While direct interaction approaches to relativistic quantum mechanics have proved to be useful, they have two disadvantages. One is that cluster properties are difficult to realize for systems of more than two particles. The second is that the relation to quantum field theories is indirect. Euclidean formulations of relativistic quantum mechanics provide an alternative representation that does not have these difficulties. More surprising, the theory can be formulated entirely in the Euclidean representation without the need for analytic continuation. In this work a Euclidean representation of a relativistic N-particle system is discussed. Kernels for systems of N free particles of any spin are given and shown to be reflection positive. Explicit formulas for generators of the Poincaré group for any spin are constructed and shown to be self-adjoint on the Euclidean representation of the Hilbert space. The structure of correlations that preserve both the Euclidean covariance and reflection positivity is discussed.

Abstract:Using the relativistic quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation within the framework of the equivalence postulate, and grounding one self on both relativistic and quantum Lagrangians, we construct a Lagrangian of relativistic quantum system in one dimension and derive a third order equation of motion representing a first integral of the relativistic quantum Newton's law. Then, we investigate the free particle case and establish the photon's trajectories.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to investigate the dynamics of semi-relativistic or non-relativistic charged particles in interaction with a scalar meson field. Our main contribution is the derivation of the classical dynamics of a particle-field system as an effective equation of the quantum microscopic Nelson model, in the classical limit where the value of the Planck constant approaches zero ($\hbar\to 0$). Thus, we prove the validity of Bohr's correspondence principle, that is to establish the transition from quantum to classical dynamics. We use a Wigner measure approach to study such transition. Then, as a consequence of this interplay between classical and quantum dynamics, we establish the global well-posedness of the classical particle-field interacting system, despite the low regularity of the related vector field, which prevents the use of a fixed point argument.

Abstract:The relativistic two body problem is considered in terms of the action integral in the case of two interacting spinless particles and spin-$1/2$ fermions, interacting by means of vector and scalar fields. The Lagrangians governing the dynamics of such particles are derived in the momentum representation. In the Breit frame, when the two-body system is at rest as whole, the obtained Lagrangians generate the Klein-Gordon-like and Dirac-like equations in the (3+1) phase space. The derived equations are examined by studying a para-positronium in a strong magnetic field. It is shown that a strong magnetic fields result in essential decreasing the para-positronium life-time.

A Unifying Action Principle for Classical Mechanical Systems

Abstract:The modern theory of classical mechanics, developed by Lagrange, Hamilton and Noether, attempts to cast all of classical motion in the form of an optimization problem, based on an energy functional called the classical action. The most important advantage of this formalism is the ability to manifestly incorporate and exploit symmetries and conservation laws. This reformulation succeeded for unconstrained and holonomic systems that at most obey position equality constraints. Non-holonomic systems, which obey velocity dependent constraints or position inequality constraints, are abundant in nature and of central relevance for science, engineering and industry. All attempts so far to solve non-holonomic dynamics as a classical action optimization problem have failed. Here we utilize the classical limit of a quantum field theory action principle to construct a novel classical action for non-holonomic systems. We therefore put to rest the 190 year old question of whether classical mechanics is variational, answering in the affirmative. We illustrate and validate our approach by solving three canonical model problems by direct numerical optimization of our new action. The formalism developed in this work significantly extends the reach of action principles to a large class of relevant mechanical systems, opening new avenues for their analysis and control both analytically and numerically.

Abstract:Relativistic free-motion time-of-arrival theory for massive spin-1/2 particles is systematically developed. Contrary to the nonrelativistic time-of-arrival operator studied thoroughly in previous literatures, the relativistic time-of-arrival operator possesses self-adjoint extensions because of the particle-antiparticle symmetry. The nonrelativistic limit of our theory is in agreement with the nonrelativistic time-of-arrival theory.

Abstract:A consistent theory of quantum gravity will require a fully quantum formulation of the classical equivalence principle. Such a formulation has been recently proposed in terms of the equality of the rest, inertial and gravitational mass operators, and for non-relativistic particles in a weak gravitational field. In this work, we propose a generalization to a fully relativistic formalism of the quantum equivalence principle, valid for all background space-times, as well as for massive bosons and fermions. The principle is trivially satisfied for massless particles. We show that if the equivalence principle is broken at the quantum level, it implies the modification of the standard Lorentz transformations in flat space-time and a corresponding modification of the metric in curved space-time by the different mass ratios. In other words, the observed geometry would effectively depend on the properties of the test particle. Testable predictions of potential violations of the quantum equivalence principle are proposed.
