Abstract:The multivortex solutions of (2+1)-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with a Chern-Simons term are studied. The Bogomol'nyi-type equations and corresponding Weinberg's index theorem have been derived for a sixth-order Higgs potential. The magnetic field is different from that of the Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs model which has no Maxwell term, and has a maximum at the center of the vortex.

Abstract:The presence of gauge symmetry in 1+1D is known to be redundant, since it does not imply the existence of dynamical gauge bosons. As a consequence, in the continuum, the Abelian-Higgs model, the theory of bosonic matter interacting with photons, just possesses a single phase, as the higher dimensional Higgs and Coulomb phases are connected via non-perturbative effects. However, recent research published in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 090601 (2022)] has revealed an unexpected phase transition when the system is discretized on the lattice. This transition is described by a conformal field theory with a central charge of $c=3/2$. In this paper, we aim to characterize the two components of this $c=3/2$ theory -- namely the free Majorana fermionic and bosonic parts -- through equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium spectral analyses.

Holography of Broken U(1) Symmetry

Abstract:We examine the Abelian Higgs model in (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with an ultraviolet brane. The gauge symmetry is broken by a bulk Higgs vacuum expectation value triggered on the brane. We propose two separate Goldstone boson equivalence theorems for the boundary and bulk degrees of freedom. We compute the holographic self-energy of the gauge field and show that its spectrum is either a continuum, gapped continuum, or a discretuum as a function of the Higgs bulk mass. When the Higgs has no bulk mass, the AdS isometries are unbroken. We find in that case that the dual CFT has a non-conserved U(1) current whose anomalous dimension is proportional to the square of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. When the Higgs background weakly breaks the AdS isometries, we present an adapted WKB method to solve the gauge field equations. We show that the U(1) current dimension runs logarithmically with the energy scale in accordance with a nearly-marginal U(1)-breaking deformation of the CFT.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the coupled Higgs field equations, which explain the structure of the conserved scalar nucleons interacting with a neutral scalar meson. We obtain periodic and shock-wave profiles of the model using the Jacobi elliptic function (JEF) technique. The outcomes are in the form of trigonometric, hyperbolic, and rational function solutions. The dynamical behavior of the same model is investigated from several viewpoints, including bifurcation, quasi-periodic motion, chaotic patterns, Lyapunov exponents, and sensitivity analysis.

Abstract:N-Higgs doublet models (NHDM) are a popular framework to construct electroweak symmetry breaking mechanisms beyond the Standard model. Usually, one builds an NHDM scalar sector which is invariant under a certain symmetry group. Although several such groups have been used, no general analysis of symmetries possible in the NHDM scalar sector exists. Here, we make the first step towards this goal by classifying the elementary building blocks, namely the abelian symmetry groups, with a special emphasis on finite groups. We describe a strategy that identifies all abelian groups which are realizable as symmetry groups of the NHDM Higgs potential. We consider both the groups of Higgs-family transformations only and the groups which also contain generalized CP transformations. We illustrate this strategy with the examples of 3HDM and 4HDM and prove several statements for arbitrary N.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamical mass generation in the Abelian Higgs model in 2 + 1 dimensions. Instead of adopting the approximations in [Jiang H et al., J. Phys. A 41 2008 255402.], we numerically solve the coupled Dyson–Schwinger Equations (DSEs) for the fermion and gauge boson propagators using a specific truncation for the fermion-photon vertex ansatz and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the above mentioned paper. It is found that the results quoted in the above paper remain qualitatively unaffected by refining the truncation scheme of the DSEs, although there exist large quantitative differences between the results presented in the above paper and ours. In addition, our numerical results show that the critical number of fermion flavor Nc decreases steeply with the the gauge boson mass ma (or the ratio of the Higgs mass mh to the gauge boson mass ma, r = mh/ma) increasing. It is thus easier to generate a finite fermion mass by the mechanism of DCSB for a small ratio r for a given ma.

Abstract:The Two Higgs Doublet Model invariant under the gauge group is known to have six additional global discrete or continuous symmetries of its scalar sector. We have discovered regions of parameter space of the model which are basis and renormalization group invariant to all orders of perturbation theory in the scalar and gauge sectors, but correspond to none of the hitherto considered symmetries. We therefore identify seven new symmetries of the model and discuss their phenomenology. Soft symmetry breaking is required for some of these models so that electroweak symmetry breaking can occur. We show that, at least at the two-loop level, it is possible to extend some of these symmetries to include fermions.

Abelian Higgs gauge theories with multicomponent scalar fields and multiparameter scalar potentials

Abstract:We consider multicomponent Abelian Higgs (AH) gauge theories with multiparameter scalar quartic potentials that are extensions, with a smaller global symmetry group, of $SU(N)$-invariant AH theories. In particular, we consider an AH model with a two-parameter scalar potential and $SO(N)$ global symmetry. We discuss the renormalization-group flow of the $SO(N)$-invariant AH field theory and the phase diagram and critical behavior of a corresponding three-dimensional (3D) noncompact lattice AH model. We argue that the phase diagram of 3D noncompact $SO(N)$- and $SU(N)$-symmetric lattice AH models are qualitatively similar. In both cases there are three phases: the high-temperature Coulomb phase, and the low-temperature molecular and Higgs phases that differ for the topological properties of the gauge correlations. However, the main features of the low-temperature ordered phases, and in particular of the Higgs phase, differ significantly in $SO(N)$ and $SU(N)$ models. In particular, in $SO(N)$ models they depend on the sign of the self-interaction parameter $v$ that controls the symmetry breaking from $SU(N)$ to $SO(N)$. As a consequence, also the universal features of the transitions related with the spontaneous breaking of the global symmetry (those between the high-temperature Coulomb phase and the low-temperature molecular and Higgs phases) depend on the sign of $v$.

Vacuum and Vortices in Inhomogeneous Abelian Higgs Model

Abstract:The inhomogeneous abelian Higgs model with a magnetic impurity in the BPS limit is studied for both relativistic and nonrelativistic regimes. Though the symmetry of spatial translation is broken by inhomogeneity, extension to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theory is admitted. The quartic scalar potential has minimum value depending on strength of the impurity but possesses broken phase at spatial asymptote. The vacuum configuration of broken phase can be neither a constant nor the minimum of the scalar potential, but is found as a nontrivial solution of the Bogomolny equations. While its energy density and magnetic field are given by the function of spatial coordinates, the energy and magnetic flux remain zero. The sign of the magnetic impurity term allows either a BPS sector or anti-BPS sector but not both. Thus the obtained solution is identified as the new inhomogeneous broken vacuum of minimum zero energy. In the presence of rotationally symmetric Gaussian type inhomogeneity, topological vortex solutions are also obtained and the effects of the impurity to the vortex are numerically analyzed.

Abstract:A version of N = 1 supersymmetric scalar electrodynamics is considered here, and it is shown that an electrically charged nontopological soliton exists in this model. In addition to the long-range electric field, the soliton also possesses a long-range scalar field, which leads to a modification of the intersoliton interaction potential at large distances. The supersymmetry of the model makes it possible to express fermionic zero modes of the soliton in terms of bosonic fields. The properties of the nontopological soliton are investigated using analytical and numerical methods.

Abstract:We study an inhomogeneous U(1) Chern-Simons Higgs model with a magnetic impurity in the BPS limit. The potential is sextic with both broken and unbroken phases, but its minimum varies spatially depending on the strength of the impurity. While the system lacks translation symmetry, it admits a supersymmetric extension. Depending on the sign of the impurity term, it has either a BPS sector or an anti-BPS sector (but not both), which satisfies the Bogomolny equations. The vacuum configuration of the broken phase is not simply determined by the the minimum of the potential since it is no longer constant, but it becomes a nontrivial function satisfying the Bogomolny equations. Thus, the energy and angular momentum densities of the vacuum locally have nonzero distributions, although the total energy and angular momentum remain zero. As in the homogeneous case, the theory supports various BPS soliton solutions, including topological and nontopological vortices and Q-balls. The vorticities as well as the U(1) charges are exclusively positive or negative. For a Gaussian type impurity as a specific example, we obtain rotationally symmetric numerical solutions and analyze their detailed properties.

Abstract:We show that the dynamics of the scalar Higgs field in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model, supplemented with a dimension 6 derivative operator, can be constrained at the quantum level by a certain stability equation. The latter holds true in the Landau gauge and is derived within the recently proposed extended field formalism where the physical scalar is described by a gauge-invariant field variable. Physical implications of the stability equation are discussed.

Classical Dynamics of Vortex Solitons from Perturbative Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract:We introduce a novel point-particle effective description of ANO vortex solitons in the critical Abelian Higgs Model (AHM) in $d=2+1$ based on the small winding expansion. Identifying the effective vortices with the elementary quanta of a complex scalar field, relativistic vortex-vortex scattering amplitudes are calculated as a diagrammatic, perturbative expansion in the winding number $N$. Making use of powerful techniques recently developed for analyzing the post-Minkowskian two-body problem in general relativity, we efficiently extract the contribution to the loop integrals from the classical potential region, with the resulting velocity expansion subsequently resummed to all orders. The main result of this paper is an analytic expression for the classical, vortex-vortex potential at $\mathcal{O}\left(N^2\right)$, or one-loop, with exact velocity dependence. By truncating the resulting effective Hamiltonian at $\mathcal{O}\left(p^2\right)$ we derive an analytic, perturbative expression for the metric on the 2-vortex moduli space. Finally, the emergence of the critical AHM from the classical limit of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric AHM, and the resulting constraints on the point-particle EFT is described in detail using an on-shell superspace construction for BPS states in $d=2+1$.

Higgs Mode in 2+1 Dimensional O(2) Model

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spectral functions of the Higgs mode in [Formula: see text] model, which can be experimentally realized in a two-dimensional Bose gas. Zero temperature limit is considered. Our calculation fully includes the 2-loop contributions. Peaks show up in the spectral functions of both the longitudinal and the scalar susceptibilities. Thus, this model cannot explain the disappearance of the response at the weak interaction limit. Neither it can explain the similarity between the longitudinal and the scalar susceptibilities in the visibility of the Higgs mode. A possible lower peak at about [Formula: see text] is also noted.
A rich structure of renormalization group flows for Higgs-like models in 4 dimensions

Abstract:We consider $2$ coupled Higgs doublets which transform in the usual way under SU(2)$\otimes$U(1). By constructing certain marginal operators that break time reversal symmetry, we can obtain a rich pattern of renormalization group (RG) flows which includes lines of fixed points and more interestingly, cyclic RG flows which are rather generic. The hamiltonian is pseudo-hermitian, $H^\dagger = {\cal K} H {\cal K}$ with ${\cal K}^2 =1$, however it still enjoys real eigenvalues and a unitary time evolution. Upon spontaneous symmetry breaking, the Higgs fields have an infinite number of vacuum expectation values $v_n$ which satisfy ``Russian Doll" scaling $v_n \sim e^{2 n \lambda}$ where $n=1,2,3,\ldots$ and $\lambda$ is the period of one RG cycle which is an RG invariant. We speculate that this Russian Doll RG flow can perhaps explain the origin of ``families" in the Standard Model of particle physics.

Abstract:The solutions of the Bogomolny equation in anti-de Sitter space-time are obtained by using Darboux transformations with both constant spectral parameters and variable "spectral parameters". These solutions give the Yang-Mills-Higgs fields in anti-de Sitter space-time. Some examples in SU(2) case are considered and qualitative asymptotic behaviors of the solutions as t tends to infinity are discussed in detail.
