Abstract:In the hybrid kT-factorization formula, one initial-state parton momentum is space-like and carries non-vanishing transverse components, while the other is on-shell. We promote this factorization formula to next-to-leading order. Studying the partonic cross section, we identify all soft and collinear divergencies in the real and virtual contribution, and recognize that all non-cancelling ones can be attributed to PDF evolution, evolution kernel, and target impact factors. In result, we construct a framework that may be used to compute NLO impact factors in general. In particular, we recover known expressions for inclusive NLO quark-and gluon impact factor corrections.

Abstract:We present a subtraction method for the calculation of real-radiation integrals at NLO in hybrid kT-factorization. The main difference with existing methods for collinear factorization is that we subtract the momentum recoil, occurring due to the mapping from an (n+1)-particle phase space to an n-particle phase space, from the initial-state momenta, instead of distributing it over the final-state momenta.

Abstract:The idea of ``dynamically'' generated parton distribution functions, based on regular initial conditions at low momentum scale, is reanalyzed with particular emphasize paid to its compatibility with the factorization mechanism. Basic consequences of this approach are discussed and compared to those of the conventional approach, employing singular initial distribution functions.

Abstract:I show that with simple extensions of the shower algorithms in Monte Carlo programs, one can implement NLO corrections to the hardest emission that overcome the problems of negative weighted events found in previous implementations. Simple variants of the same method can be used for an improved treatment of matrix element corrections in Shower Monte Carlo programs.

Abstract:The next-to-leading order (NLO) evolution of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in QCD is a common tool in the lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collider data analysis. The standard NLO DGLAP evolution is formulated for inclusive (integrated) PDFs and done using inclusive NLO kernels. We report here on the ongoing project, called KRKMC, in which NLO DGLAP evolution is performed for the exclusive multiparton (fully unintegrated) distributions (ePDFs) with the help of the exclusive kernels. These kernels are calculated within the two-parton phase space for the non-singlet evolution, using Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio factorization scheme. The multiparton distribution, with multiple use of the exclusive NLO kernels, is implemented in the Monte Carlo program simulating multi-gluon emission from single quark emitter. High statistics tests ($\sim 10^{10}$ events) show that the new scheme works perfectly well in practice and, at the inclusive (integrated) level, is equivalent with the traditional inclusive NLO DGLAP evolution. Once completed, this new technique is aimed as a building block for the new more precise NLO parton shower Monte Carlo, for W/Z production at LHC and for ep scattering, as well as a starting point for other perturbative QCD based Monte Carlo projects.

Revealing a deep connection between factorization and saturation: New insight into modeling high-energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus scattering in the EPOS4 framework

Abstract:It is known that multiple partonic scatterings in high-energy proton-proton ($pp$) collisions must happen in parallel. However, a rigorous parallel scattering formalism, taking energy sharing properly into account, fails to reproduce factorization, which on the other hand is the basis of almost all $pp$ event generators. In addition, binary scaling in nuclear scatterings is badly violated. These problems are usually ``solved'' by simply not considering strictly parallel scatterings, which is not a solution. I will report on new ideas (leading to EPOS4), which allow recovering perfectly factorization, and also binary scaling in $AA$ collisions, in a rigorous unbiased parallel scattering formalism. In this new approach, dynamical saturation scales play a crucial role, and this seems to be the missing piece needed to reconcile parallel scattering with factorization. From a practical point of view, one can compute within the EPOS4 framework parton distribution functions (EPOS PDFs) and use them to compute inclusive $pp$ cross sections. So, for the first time, one may compute inclusive jet production (for heavy or light flavors) at very high transverse momentum ($p_{t}$) and at the same time in the same formalism study flow effects at low $p_{t}$ in high-multiplicity $pp$ events, making EPOS4 a full-scale ``general purpose event generator''. I discuss applications, essentially multiplicity dependencies (of particle ratios, mean $p_{t}$, charm production) which are very strongly affected by the saturation issues discussed in this paper.

Abstract:We give a prescription for attaching parton showers to next-to-leading order (NLO) partonic jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation. Our method effectively extends to NLO the scheme of Catani, Krauss, Kuhn, and Webber for matching between m hard jets and (m+1) hard jets. The matching between parton splitting as part of a shower and parton splitting as part of NLO matrix elements is based on the Catani-Seymour dipole subtraction method that is commonly used for removing the singularities from the NLO matrix elements.}

Abstract:Starting from a factorization theorem in effective field theory, we derive a parton-shower equation for the resummation of non-global logarithms. We have implemented this shower and interfaced it with a tree-level event generator to obtain an automated framework to resum the leading logarithm of non-global observables in the large-Nc limit. Using this setup, we compute gap fractions for dijet processes and isolation cone cross sections relevant for photon production. We compare our results with fixed-order computations and LHC measurements. We find that naive exponentiation is often not adequate, especially when the vetoed region is small, since non-global contributions are enhanced due to their dependence on the veto-region size. Since our parton shower is derived from first principles and based on renormalization-group evolution, it is clear what ingredients will have to be included to perform resummations at subleading logarithmic accuracy in the future.

Abstract:We propose a method for matching the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of a given QCD process with a parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The method has the following features: fully exclusive events are generated, with hadronization according to the MC model; total exclusive rates are accurate to NLO; NLO results for distributions are recovered upon expansion in αs; hard emissions are treated as in NLO computations while soft/collinear emissions are handled by the MC simulation, with the same logarithmic accuracy as the MC; and matching between the hard- and soft/collinear-emission regions is smooth. A fraction of events with negative weight is generated, but unweighting remains possible with reasonable efficiency. The method is clarified using a simple toy model, and illustrated by application to the hadroproduction of W+W− pairs.

Abstract:The search for new interactions and particles in high-energy collider physics relies on precise background predictions. This has led to many advances in combining precise fixed-order cross-section calculations with detailed event generator simulations. In recent years, fixed-order QCD calculations of inclusive cross sections at N3LO precision have emerged, followed by an impressive progress at producing differential results. Once differential results become publicly available, it would be prudent to embed these into event generators to allow the community to leverage these advances. This note offers some concrete thoughts on ME+PS matching at third order in QCD. As a method for testing these thoughts, a toy calculation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow u \bar u$ at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ is constructed, and combined with an event generator through unitary matching. The toy implementation may serve also as blueprint for high-precision QCD predictions at future lepton colliders. As a byproduct of the N3LO matching formula, a new NNLO+PS formula for processes with "additional" jets is obtained.

Abstract:Matched calculations combining perturbative QCD with parton showers are an indispensable tool for LHC physics. Two methods for NLO matching are in widespread use: MC@NLO and POWHEG. We describe an alternative, KrkNLO, reformulated to be easily applicable to any colour-singlet process. The primary distinguishing characteristic of KrkNLO is its use of an alternative factorisation scheme, the 'Krk' scheme, to achieve NLO accuracy. We describe the general implementation of KrkNLO in Herwig 7, using diphoton production as a test process. We systematically compare its predictions to those produced by MC@NLO with several different choices of shower scale, both truncated to one-emission and with the shower running to completion, and to ATLAS data from LHC Run 2.

Abstract:In a large-momentum nucleon state, the matrix element of a gauge-invariant Euclidean Wilson line operator accessible from lattice QCD can be related to the standard light-cone parton distribution function through the large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) expansion. This relation is given by a factorization formula with a nontrivial matching coefficient. Using the operator product expansion we derive the large-momentum factorization of the quasiparton distribution function in LMET, and show that the more recently discussed pseudoparton distribution approach also obeys an equivalent factorization formula. Explicit results for the coefficients are obtained and compared at one loop. We also prove that the matching coefficients in the (MS) over bar scheme depend on the large partonic momentum rather than the nucleon momentum.
On the importance of factorization for fast binned likelihood inference

Abstract:Likelihood-based inference, central in modern particle physics data analysis requires the extensive evaluation of a likelihood function that depends on set of parameters defined by the statistical model under consideration. If an analytical expression for the likelihood can be defined from first principles the procedure is computationally straightforward. However, most experiments require approximating the likelihood numerically using large statistical samples of synthetic events generated using Monte Carlo methods. As a result, the likelihood consists of a comparison of the expected versus the observed event rates in a collection of histogram bins, defining binned likelihood functions. When this occurs, evaluating the likelihood function involves, on each occasion, recalculating the prediction in those bins, increasing the computational load of these analysis drastically. In this text, I highlight the importance of identifying which are the unique event configurations in the binned likelihood definition and I provide an exact formula to update the event rate predictions utilizing the minimum number of necessary calculations by means of factorization. The aim of the discussion is to decrease the computational load of widespread high-energy physics analyses, leading to substantial speed improvements and reduced carbon footprints.

Abstract:We present a systematic formalism based on a factorization theorem in soft-collinear effective theory to describe non-global observables at hadron colliders, such as gap-between-jets cross sections. The cross sections are factorized into convolutions of hard functions, capturing the dependence on the partonic center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{\hat s}$, and low-energy matrix elements, which are sensitive to the low scale $Q_0\ll\sqrt{\hat s}$ characteristic of the veto imposed on energetic emissions into the gap between the jets. The scale evolution of both objects is governed by a renormalization-group equation, which we derive at one-loop order. By solving the evolution equation for the hard functions for arbitrary $2\to M$ jet processes in the leading logarithmic approximation, we accomplish for the first time the all-order resummation of the so-called "super-leading logarithms" discovered in 2006, thereby solving an old problem of quantum field theory. We study the numerical size of the corresponding effects for different partonic scattering processes and explain why they are sizable for $pp\to 2\,\text{jets}$ processes, but suppressed in $H/Z$ and $H/Z$+jet production. The super-leading logarithms are given by an alternating series, whose individual terms can be much larger than the resummed result, even in very high orders of the loop expansion. Resummation is therefore essential to control these effects. We find that the asymptotic fall-off of the resummed series is much weaker than for standard Sudakov form factors.

A general mass variable flavor number scheme for $Z$ boson production in association with a heavy quark at hadron colliders

Abstract:We present a methodology to streamline implementation of massive-quark radiative contributions in calculations with a variable number of active partons in proton-proton collisions. The methodology introduces \textit{subtraction} and \textit{residual} heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) to implement calculations in the Aivazis-Collins-Olness-Tung (ACOT) factorization scheme and its simplified realization in various processes up to the next-to-the-next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling strength. Interpolation tables for bottom-quark subtraction and residual distributions for CT18 NLO and NNLO PDF ensembles are provided in the common LHAPDF6 format. A numerical calculation of $Z$-boson production with at least one $b$ jet at the Large Hadron Collider beyond the lowest order in QCD is considered for illustration purposes.

Abstract:Factorization underlies all predictions at the Large Hadron Collider, but has only been rigorously proven in a few cases. One of these cases is the Drell-Yan process, pp→Z/γ+X , in the limit of small-boson transverse momentum. We introduce a one-parameter family of observables, that we call vector angularities, of which the transverse momentum is a special case. This enables the study of factorization violation, with a smooth transition to the limit for which factorization has been established. Like the angularity event shapes, vector angularities are a sum of transverse momenta weighted by rapidity, but crucially this is a vector sum rather than a sum of the magnitude of transverse momenta. We study these observables in pythia , using the effect of multiparton interactions (MPI) as a proxy factorization violation, finding a negligible effect in the case where factorization is established but sizable effects away from it. We also present a factorization formula for the cross section, that does not include factorization violating contributions from Glauber gluons, and thus offers a baseline for studying factorization violation experimentally using vector angularities. Abstract:One of the substantial sources of systematic errors in neutrino oscillation experiments that utilize neutrinos from accelerator sources stems from a lack of precision in modeling single-pion production (SPP). Oscillation analyses rely on Monte Carlo event generators (MC), providing theoretical predictions of neutrino interactions on nuclear targets. Pions produced in these processes provide a significant fraction of oscillation signal and background on both elementary scattering and detector simulation levels. Thus, it is of critical importance to develop techniques that will allow us to accommodate state-of-the-art theoretical models describing SPP into MCs. In this work, we investigate various algorithms to implement single-pion production models in Monte Carlo event generators. Based on comparison studies, we propose a novel implementation strategy that combines satisfactory efficiency with high precision in reproducing details of theoretical models predictions, including pion angular distributions. The proposed implementation is model-independent, thereby providing a framework that can include any model for SPP. On the breaking of collinear factorization in QCD

Abstract:We investigate the breakdown of collinear factorization for non-inclusive observables in hadron-hadron collisions. For pure QCD processes, factorization is violated at the three-loop level and it has a structure identical to that encountered previously in the case of super-leading logarithms. In particular, it is driven by the non-commutation of Coulomb/Glauber gluon exchanges with other soft exchanges. Beyond QCD, factorization may be violated at the two-loop level provided that the hard subprocess contains matrix element contributions with phase differences between different colour topologies.

Factorization and resummation at next-to-leading-power

Abstract:We discuss recent progress concerning the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-leading power (NLP) in scattering processes such as Drell-Yan and deep inelastic scattering near threshold, and thrust in the two-jet limit. We start by reviewing the approach based on soft-collinear effective field theory and show that the standard factorization into short distance coefficients, collinear and soft functions at NLP leads in general to the appearance of endpoint divergences, which prevent the naive application of resummation techniques based on the renormalization group. Taking thrust as a case study, we then show that these singularities are indeed an artifact of the effective theory, and discuss how they can be removed to recover a finite factorization theorem and achieve resummation at NLP, at LL accuracy. Last, we discuss recent work concerning the calculation of all collinear and soft functions necessary to reproduce Drell-Yan near threshold up to NNLO in perturbation theory. This calculation provides useful data to extend resummation at NLP beyond LL accuracy.
