Abstract:In literature, it is known that any solution of Painleve VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on CP1. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on CP1 to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lame equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painleve VI equation for generic parameters. For Painleve VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodromy theory of the generalized Lame equation greatly simplifies the computation of the monodromy group in CP1. Abstract:For the $q$-Painlevé equation with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $E_6^{(1)}$, a $2\times 2$ matrix Lax form and a second order scalar lax form were known. We give a new $3\times 3$ matrix Lax form and a third order scalar equation related to it. Continuous limit is also discussed.

The Painlevé equivalence problem for a constrained 3D system

Abstract:In this paper we propose a geometric approach to study Painlevé equations appearing as constrained systems of three first-order ordinary differential equations. We illustrate this approach on a system of three first-order differential equations arising in the theory of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials. We show that it can be restricted to a system of two first-order differential equations in two different ways on an invariant hypersurface. We build the space of initial conditions for each of these restricted systems and verify that they exhibit the Painlevé property from a geometric perspective. Utilising the Painlevé identification algorithm we also relate this system to the Painlevé VI equation and we build its global Hamiltonian structure. Finally, we prove that the autonomous limit of the original system is Liouville integrable, and the level curves of its first integrals are elliptic curves, which leads us to conjecture that the 3D system itself also possesses the Painlevé property without the need to restrict it to the invariant hypersurface.

Abstract:We show the relation of the non-stationary difference equation proposed by one of the authors and the quantized discrete Painlevé VI equation. The five-dimensional Seiberg-Witten curve associated with the difference equation has a consistent four-dimensional limit. We also show that the original equation can be factorized as a coupled system for a pair of functions $\bigl(\mathcal{F}^{(1)},\mathcal{F}^{(2)}\bigr)$, which is a consequence of the identification of the Hamiltonian as a translation element in the extended affine Weyl group. We conjecture that the instanton partition function coming from the affine Laumon space provides a solution to the coupled system.

Abstract:The Painlevé equations can be written as Hamiltonian systems with affine Weyl group symmetries. A canonical quantization of the Painlevé equations preserving the affine Weyl group symmetries has been studied. While, the Painlevé equations are isomonodromic equations for certain second-order linear differential equations. In this paper, we introduce a canonical quantization of Lax equations for the Painlevé equations and construct symmetries of the quantum Lax equations. We also show that our quantum Lax equations are derived from Virasoro conformal field theory.

Abstract:It is well known that the Painlevé equations can formally degenerate to autonomous differential equations with elliptic function solutions in suitable scaling limits. A way to make this degeneration rigorous is to apply Deift-Zhou steepest-descent techniques to a Riemann-Hilbert representation of a family of solutions. This method leads to an explicit approximation formula in terms of theta functions and related algebro-geometric ingredients that is difficult to directly link to the expected limiting differential equation. However, the approximation arises from an outer parametrix that satisfies relatively simple conditions. By applying a method that we learned from Alexander Its, it is possible to use these simple conditions to directly obtain the limiting differential equation, bypassing the details of the algebro-geometric solution of the outer parametrix problem. In this paper, we illustrate the use of this method to relate an approximation of the algebraic solutions of the Painlevé-III (D$_7$) equation valid in the part of the complex plane where the poles and zeros of the solutions asymptotically reside to a form of the Weierstrass equation.

Abstract:This paper first discusses irreducibility of a Painlevé equation $P$. We explain how the Painlevé property is helpful for the computation of special classical and algebraic solutions. As in a paper of Morales-Ruiz we associate an autonomous Hamiltonian $\mathbb{H}$ to a Painlevé equation $P$. Complete integrability of $\mathbb{H}$ is shown to imply that all solutions to $P$ are classical (which includes algebraic), so in particular $P$ is solvable by ''quadratures''. Next, we show that the variational equation of $P$ at a given algebraic solution coincides with the normal variational equation of $\mathbb{H}$ at the corresponding solution. Finally, we test the Morales-Ramis theorem in all cases $P_{2}$ to $P_{5}$ where algebraic solutions are present, by showing how our results lead to a quick computation of the component of the identity of the differential Galois group for the first two variational equations. As expected there are no cases where this group is commutative.

Abstract:For the fifth Painlevé equation it is known that a general solution is represented asymptotically by an elliptic function in cheese-like strips near the point at infinity. We present an explicit asymptotic formula for the error term of this expression, which leads to an estimate for its magnitude as was conjectured. Analogous formula is obtained for the error term of the correction function associated with the Lagrangian.

Abstract:We focus on Fuchsian equations with four accessory parameters and three singular points. We see that the Fuchsian equations admit a "degeneration scheme" in some sense, which is expected to give rise to a degeneration scheme of discrete isomonodromic deformation equations with four-dimensional phase space. We compute an example of discrete isomonodromic deformation equations of a certain Fuchsian equation.

Abstract:We study a delay-differential analogue of the first Painlevé equation obtained as a delay periodic reduction of Shabat's dressing chain. We construct formal entire solutions to this equation and introduce a new family of polynomials (called Bernoulli-Catalan polynomials), which are defined by a nonlinear recurrence of Catalan type, and which share properties with Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. We also discuss meromorphic solutions and describe the singularity structure of this delay Painlevé-I equation in terms of an affine Weyl group of type $A_1^{(1)}$. As an application we demonstrate the link with the problem of calculation of the Masur-Veech volumes of the moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials by re-deriving some of the known formulas.

Discrete Painlevé equations and pencils of quadrics in $\mathbb P^3$

Abstract:Discrete Painlevé equations constitute a famous class of integrable non-autonomous second order difference equations. A classification scheme proposed by Sakai interprets a discrete Painlevé equation as a birational map between generalized Halphen surfaces (surfaces obtained from $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$ by blowing up at eight points). Sakai's classification is thus based on the classification of generalized Halphen surfaces. We propose a novel geometric interpretation of discrete Painlevé equations, where the family of generalized Halphen surfaces is replaced by a pencil of quadrics in $\mathbb P^3$. A discrete Painlevé equation is viewed as a birational transformation of $\mathbb P^3$ that preserves the pencil and maps each quadric of the pencil to a different one, according to a Möbius transformation of the pencil parameter. Thus, our scheme is based on the classification of pencils of quadrics in $\mathbb P^3$.

Abstract:Among the recently found discretizations of the sixth Painlevé equation P6, only the one of Jimbo and Sakai admits a discrete Lax pair, which does establish its integrability. However, a subtle restriction in this Lax pair prevents the possibility to generalize it in order to find the other missing Lax pairs. It happens that the same restriction already exists in the matrix Lax pair of Jimbo and Miwa for the continuous P6. In this preliminary article, we remove this last restriction and give a matrix Lax pair for P6 which is traceless, rational in the dependent and independent variables, holomorphic in the monodromy exponents, with four Fuchsian singularities in the complex plane of the spectral parameter. Its only minor drawback is the presence of the apparent singularity which always exists in the scalar Lax pair.

Abstract:Painleve VI equation is well known as a class of nonlinear ODEs whose solutions govern the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE with five regular singularities on CP1. We propose the question how the monodromy effects the behavior of solutions. In this paper, the second of a series devoted to this question, we study Painleve VI equation with parameters ( (2n+1)(2) /8 , -1/8,8/1,3/8) with n is an element of N. A solution lambda(t) is called unitarizable if the monodromy group of the associated linear ODE of lambda(t) is conjugated to a subgroup of the unitary group SU(2). For example, any algebraic solution is unitarizable. In Part I [7] we studied the special case n = 1. In this paper we show that (i) Any unitarizable solution has no poles in R\{0, 1} for all n is an element of N. (ii) For n = 2, there are only 3 unitarizable solutions without poles in C\ {0, 1}. (iii) For n = 2, every single -valued branch of any unitarizable solution in C \ (-infinity, 1] has at most 5 poles (this upper bound is optimal). These results are obtained by applying the PDE result of a singular Liouville equation on flat tori and the pre -modular form Z(r,s)((m)) (tau) introduced in [15, 29]. The study of the zero structure of Z(r,s)((m)) (tau) is of independent interest.

Abstract:Isomonodromy for the fifth Painlevé equation ${\rm P}_5$ is studied in detail in the context of certain moduli spaces for connections, monodromy, the Riemann-Hilbert morphism, and Okamoto-Painlevé spaces. This involves explicit formulas for Stokes matrices and parabolic structures. The rank 4 Lax pair for ${\rm P}_5$, introduced by Noumi-Yamada et al., is shown to be induced by a natural fine moduli space of connections of rank 4. As a by-product one obtains a polynomial Hamiltonian for ${\rm P}_5$, equivalent to the one of Okamoto.

Abstract:In this work we develop an algorithmic procedure for associating a function defined on the Riemann surface of the $\log$ to given asymptotic data from a function at an essential singularity. We do this by means of rational approximations (Padé approximants) used in tandem with Borel-Écalle summation. Our method is capable of handling situations where classical methods either do not work or converge very slowly eg. \cite{DunLutz}. We provide a general outline of the procedure and then apply it to generating approximate tritronquée solutions to Painlevé's first equation ($\text{P}_\text{I}$).
