Abstract:We study the photoelectron energy and momentum distributions of strong-field tunneling ionization in the relativistic regime. Using the relativistic strong-field approximation, we have derived the position of the tunnel exit, the initial momentum distributions at the tunnel exit, and the instantaneous ionization rate when the electron tunnels through the Coulomb barrier in the relativistic regime. Since the tunneling electron energy is of the order of 1% of the rest of its mass, those nonadiabatic tunneling coordinates are quite different from the nonrelativistic case. We further incorporate the nonadiabatic relativistic tunneling coordinates into the classical trajectory Monte Carlo model and have calculated photoelectron energy and momentum distributions by accurately considering the field distribution in the focus of relativistic femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the nonadiabatic tunneling effect and the focal field distribution are very crucial to modeling strong-field ionization in the relativistic regime because the quiver radius of electrons can be as large as the beam waist.

Abstract:We study strong-field tunneling of atoms in intense elliptically polarized laser fields in natural tunneling geometry. We obtain the temporal-and spatial-dependent tunneling ionization rates, the transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions, and the position distributions of the tunnel exit in parabolic coordinates. The tunneling electron wave packets at the tunnel exit are three dimensionally characterized for both momentum and spatial distributions. The conjunction between the tunneling point and the classical propagation of the widely used semiclassical model are naturally connected. We further calculate the ellipticity-dependent photoelectron momentum distributions on the detector, which are validated by comparison with the exact results through numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The theory clarifies crucial questions about strong-field tunneling ionization, which has important implications for the attoclock with elliptical or circular fields, photoelectron holography, molecular orbital imaging, etc.
Atomic polarization and Stark-shift in relativistic strong field ionization

Abstract:A relativistic analytical theory of strong field ionization applicable across the regimes of the deep-tunneling up to the over-barrier ionization (OTBI) is developed, incorporating the effects of the polarization of the atomic bound state and the Stark-shift in an ultrastrong laser field. The theory, in particular, addresses the order of magnitude discrepancy of the ionization yield in the relativistic regime calculated via the numerical solution of the Klein-Gordon equation [B. Hafizi \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 133201 (2017)] with respect to the state-of-the-art quasiclassical theory of Perelomov-Popov-Terent'ev (PPT) for strong field ionization. The developed theory employs a Keldysh-like approach describing the ionization as an adiabatic quantum jump from the bound state to the continuum at a specific transition time, where the improved performance is achieved by accounting for the bound state distortion in the laser field. In the nonrelativistic limit, our theory reproduces the well-known fit to the numerical calculations for the OTBI rate via the Tong-Lin factor. Realistic conditions for an experimental confirmation of the prediction of the present relativistic model versus PPT-theory are also presented.

This allows a comparative test of the currently dominant conjectures regarding independent-electron tunneling theory vs. fully electron-correlated classical release theory to describe electron release in strong-field double ionization.
Nonadiabatic tunneling ionization of atoms in elliptically polarized laser fields

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the nonadiabatic effects in strong field tunneling ionization of atoms in elliptically polarized laser fields by solving the 3D time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). Comparing our TDSE results with those of two semi-classical methods, i.e., the quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo simulation (QTMC) and the Coulomb-corrected strong field approximation (CCSFA), we confirm the existence of the nonadiabatic effects with its fingerprint in the nonzero initial lateral velocity at the tunneling exit in the laser polarization plane. Our study shows that these nonadiabatic initial lateral momentum effects become significant in high ellipticity or circularly polarized laser field. These results indicate that the calibration of the experimental laser intensity in this situation should be performed nonadiabatically, which may strongly affect the results of the real tunneling time delay measurements.
Interplay between Coulomb-focusing and non-dipole effects in strong-field ionization with elliptical polarization

Abstract:Strong-field ionization and rescattering beyond the long-wavelength limit of the dipole approximation is studied with elliptically polarized mid-IR pulses. We have measured the full three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions (3D PMDs) with velocity map imaging and tomographic reconstruction. The ellipticity-dependent 3D-PMD measurements revealed an unexpected sharp, thin line-shaped ridge structure in the polarization plane for low momentum photoelectrons. With classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) simulations and analytical methods we identified the associated ionization dynamics for this sharp ridge to be due to Coulomb focusing of slow recollisions of electrons with a momentum approaching zero. This ridge is another example of the many different ways how the Coulomb field of the parent ion influences the different parts of the momentum space of the ionized electron wave packet. Building on this new understanding of the PMD, we extend our studies on the role played by the magnetic field component of the laser beam when operating beyond the long-wavelength limit of the dipole approximation. In this regime, we find that the PMD exhibits an ellipticity-dependent asymmetry along the beam propagation direction: the peak of the projection of the PMD onto the beam propagation axis is shifted from negative to positive values with increasing ellipticity. This turnover occurs rapidly once the ellipticity exceeds $\sim$0.1. We identify the sharp, thin line-shaped ridge structure in the polarization plane as the origin of the ellipticity-dependent PMD asymmetry in the beam propagation direction. These results yield fundamental insights into strong-field ionization processes, and should increase the precision of the emerging applications relying on this technique, including time-resolved holography and molecular imaging.

Abstract:We demonstrate that strong-field ionization of atoms driven by circularly polarized light becomes an adiabatic process when described in the frame rotating with the laser field. As a direct consequence, a conservation law emerges: in the rotating frame the energy of the tunneling electron is conserved for rotationally invariant potentials. This conservation law, arising from a classical picture, is retrieved through a proper classical-quantum correspondence when considering the full quantum system, beyond the Strong Field Approximation.

Experimental Verification of the Nonadiabatic Effect in Strong-Field Ionization with Elliptical Polarization

Abstract:We perform high-resolution measurement of ellipticity-resolved momentum distributions from tunneling ionization of atoms along the major and minor axes in strong elliptically polarized fields, respectively. With developing a subcycle nonadiabatic strong-field tunneling theory for arbitrary laser polarization, we show that the electron initial conditions for positions and momenta after the tunneling are nonadiabatically intertwined with the instantaneous laser field. We extract the transverse and longitudinal momentum distributions at the tunnel exit with respect to the field ellipticity. We calibrate the laser intensity with ab initio calculation by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The nonadiabatic effects are confirmed experimentally and theoretically. Disentangling the effect of the long-range Coulomb potential from the laser field, we have further demonstrated that the momentum-time structure of the tunneling wave packet in strong laser fields can be approximatively imaged when treating the Coulomb effect perturbatively.

Abstract:Photoelectron momentum distribution in strong-field ionization has a variety of structures that reveal the complicated dynamics of this process. Recently, we identified a low-energy interference structure in the case of a super-intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) laser pulse and attributed it to the laser-induced electron Fresnel diffraction. This structure is determined by the laser-induced electron displacement [Geng et al. Phys. Rev. A 104 (2021) L021102]. In the present work, we find that the Fresnel diffraction picture also appears in the tunneling and over-barrier regime of ionization by short pulses. However, the electron displacement is now induced by the electric field component of the laser pulse rather than the magnetic field component in the case of the super-intense XUV pulse. After corresponding modifications to our quantum and semiclassical models, we find that the same physical mechanism of the Fresnel diffraction governs the low-energy interference structures along the laser polarization. The results predicted by the two models agree well with the accurate results from the numerical solution to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation.

Abstract:The strong-field laser physics enterprise is investing important resources in the study of the effects of oscillatory electric fields on matter using the tunneling concept, whereas laser fields are vector fields that do not support the tunneling model. Oscillatory electric fields and propagating plane-wave laser fields are different electrodynamic phenomena, and similarities in their effects diminish as field intensity increases. Major differences are known in the case of very low frequencies where oscillatory electric fields act adiabatically as the frequency declines, in contrast to extreme relativistic effects of strong laser fields. Many supposed new phenomena, such as ATI (Above-Threshold Ionization), channel closing, and stabilization were studied in terms of propagating fields before they came to the attention of the atomic physics community. This illustrates the efficiency of using proper electrodynamic methods for the treatment of laser effects. Problems arising from the conflation of the effects of oscillatory electric fields and propagating fields are exacerbated by using ill-defined nomenclature, such as KFR and SFA, that has been used indiscriminately to apply both to oscillatory electric fields and to propagating fields. Research resources can be applied with much-improved efficiency if proper electrodynamic treatment of laser fields is employed.

Abstract:We study the intensity-dependent photoelectron differential momentum distributions from tunneling ionization of Kr and Xe atoms in circularly polarized laser fields. We measure the width of photoelectron momentum distribution along the laser propagation direction in conjunction with the most probable momentum in the polarization plane. The predictions of the available tunneling models do not agree with the measurement. We further present a semiclassical model for strong-field tunneling ionization of atoms in circularly polarized laser fields, in which we include the effect of the initial orbitals with different magnetic quantum numbers. Using this model, we quantify the relative contributions of the initial orbitals with different magnetic quantum numbers to the photoelectron differential momentum distributions. We achieve good agreement with the measurement, which does not depend on calibration of the laser intensity. Both the atomic orbitals and the long-range Coulomb potential have significant effects on the quantitative description of strong-field tunneling ionization of atoms.

Abstract:Herein, we review the recent progress in the electron dynamics of optical ionization using ultraintense laser fields. Further, the photoelectron momentum distributions at the tunnel exit during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization arc analyzed. The electron angular distributions arc obtained in terms of molecular coordinates, allowing the imaging of the molecular inner orbits. The two-color (100 nm+800 nm) circularly polarized laser fields arc used to achieve a double-pointer attoclock in which the phase and amplitude of the electronic wavepackets can be characterized. Furthermore, the photoelectrons with a high degree of spin polarization can be produced using circular laser fields based on the ionization of atoms with large spin-orbit coupling effects. Finally, the applications of ultrafast strong field physics and its developmental trend arc illustrated.

Abstract:The tunneling ionization as one of the fundamental quantum processes exposing of atoms in strong laser fields, has been investigated intensively in recent decades. The tunneling ionization has intrigued many important implications. As the first stage, the post ionization effects have been revealed in high-resolution experiments. All of those experiments indicate the importance of the long range potential on the tunneling ionization. In this chapter, we will overview the long-range potential effect on strong-field tunneling. Especially, the long range ionic potential has significant effect on the low-energy photoelectron energy structures ("ionization surprise"), the ionization asymmetry and the local ionization suppression.

Abstract:Light-matter interaction is always one of the themes of science. With the rapid development of ultra-short and ultra-strong laser techniques, nowadays we can research the internal world in a single atom and control the light-electron interactions to explore the ultrafast dynamics of intra-atomic electrons. Laser-induced tunneling ionization of atoms, as the footstone of many strong-field physical phenomena, has important research significance and is also one of the hot frontier topics. In this paper, we review the recent research advances in strong-field atomic tunneling ionization. The coordinate and momentum distributions of electrons after tunneling process are obtained based on the non-adiabatic tunneling ionization in the natural coordinates (i.e., the parabolic coordinates). We introduce the theoretical description and experimental measurement methods for the initial phase (i.e., the sub-barrier phase) of electrons obtained in the tunneling process. Based on the sub-barrier phase, we can reveal the quantum dynamical information of the tunneling process. We introduce the recent advances in photoelectron spin polarization during the strong-field tunneling ionization. On the basis of the orthogonal two-color fields, the degrees of freedom of photoelectrons in the time and space dimensions can be accurately controlled. Finally, we summarize this paper and predict future research advances.

Abstract:Using a three-dimensional semiclassical model that incorporates tunneling and Coulomb field effect, we investigate photoelectron angular distributions from single ionization of atoms in intense elliptically polarized laser fields. We have studied the photoelectron angular distributions of the first and second recollisions by tracing the respective tunnel-ionized electron trajectories. Through studying the instant of ionization and recollision with respect to the laser phase, the relative contributions of the first recollision and second recollision on two-dimensional photoelectron angular distributions have been analyzed, respectively. We find that the relative contribution of the later recollision increases with the ellipticity. The electron recollision favors the later recollision trajectory at larger field ellipticity and the later recollision trajectory contributes dominantly to the yield of the high-energy photoelectrons. We have analyzed the dependence of high-energy photoelectrons on the initial momentum and the ionization phase with respect to the laser field.

Abstract:Rescattering mediated by intense laser fields is one of the dominant processes in strong-field physics. It was usually described classically or semiclassically. Recently, laser-induced recollisions with the tunneling barriers have attracted great theoretical interest. However, fully distinguishing the "quantum" effect of rescattering with the tunneling barrier on photoelectron energy and momentum distributions is very difficult if using the linearly polarized light field. Here we perform the measurement of photoelectron momentum distributions by strong-field ionization of Ar atoms in orthogonally polarized two-color laser fields with comparable intensities. We observe the strong ionization enhancement due to rescattering on two-dimensional momentum distribution, which is in striking disagreement with the predictions by the plain strong-field approximation and the classical-trajectory Monte Carlo simulation. With the help of the analysis on the electron complex trajectories in both sub-barrier and quasicontinuum regions, the enhancement is illustrated to originate from the quantum effect of forward scattering between the tunneling electron and its parent ion. The study shows that the electron probability will be significantly modified when the rescattered electrons excurse in the continuum and the "classical" rescattering process needs the quantum description.

Abstract:We investigate the over-barrier ionization of hydrogen atoms in intense circularly and elliptically polarized laser fields. By solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we simulate the photoelectron momentum distributions with the peak laser field intensity ranging from tunneling ionization to over-barrier ionization regime. It is shown that the photoelectron momentum distributions reveal a spiral distribution in the over-barrier ionization regime, which is in contrast with the typical donut distribution sculpted by above-threshold ionization peaks in the tunneling ionization regime. To analyze the intriguing photoelectron behavior, we further develop a semi-classical model by considering the non-adiabatic effect and the depletion effect of the ground state. The photoelectron momentum distributions calculated by the semi-classical model agree well with the results of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. Based on these results, we further explore the relationship between the instantaneous ionization rate and initial transverse momentum in over-barrier ionization. It is worth noting that such a relationship is not easy to be clearly revealed in tunneling ionization regime as the final electron momentum is significantly modified by the inter-cycle interference. Moreover, we also show that the non-adiabatic effect and long-range Coulomb interaction play important roles in the over-barrier ionization.

Abstract:Radiative recombination of a relativistic electron with a highly charged ion in the presence of an intense laser field is considered. Various relativistic effects, caused by the high energy of the incoming electron and its strong coupling to the intense laser field, are found to clearly manifest themselves in the spectra of the emitted $\gamma$-photons.
