Abstract:Electron transport through a quantum wire coupled with ferromagnetic leads on a graphene sheet is studied by the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function method. We investigate the dependence of the transport properties on the wire-graphene coupling strength in detail. It is found that the peaks of the density of states fade away and the current is suppressed with the increasing wire–graphene coupling strength. The spin polarized strength of the two leads can effectively suppress the current and the transmission. The results obtained provide valuable theoretical guidance to the spintronics experiment.

Abstract:Electrostatic confinement of charge carriers in graphene is governed by Klein tunneling, a relativistic quantum process in which particle-hole transmutation leads to unusual anisotropic transmission at pn junction boundaries. Reflection and transmission at these novel potential barriers should affect the quantum interference of electronic wavefunctions near these boundaries. Here we report the use of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to map the electronic structure of Dirac fermions confined by circular graphene pn junctions. These effective quantum dots were fabricated using a new technique involving local manipulation of defect charge within the insulating substrate beneath a graphene monolayer. Inside such graphene quantum dots we observe energy levels corresponding to quasi-bound states and we spatially visualize the quantum interference patterns of confined electrons. Dirac fermions outside these quantum dots exhibit Friedel oscillation-like behavior. Bolstered with a theoretical model describing relativistic particles in a harmonic oscillator potential, our findings yield new insight into the spatial behavior of electrostatically confined Dirac fermions.

Abstract:This article reviews the basic theoretical aspects of graphene, a one atom thick allotrope of carbon, with unusual two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations. The Dirac electrons can be controlled by application of external electric and magnetic fields, or by altering sample geometry and/or topology. We show that the Dirac electrons behave in unusual ways in tunneling, confinement, and integer quantum Hall effect. We discuss the electronic properties of graphene stacks and show that they vary with stacking order and number of layers. Edge (surface) states in graphene are strongly dependent on the edge termination (zigzag or armchair) and affect the physical properties of nanoribbons. We also discuss how different types of disorder modify the Dirac equation leading to unusual spectroscopic and transport properties. The effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in single layer and multilayer graphene are also presented.

Abstract:Various graphene quantum dots (GQDs) embedded in a hexagonal BN sheet were studied theoretically using the tight binding model. The effective mass was analyzed as a function of the distance between neighboring GQDs. It was found that the effective mass increases exponentially as the distance increases, indicating that the confined states of GQDs are well conserved in these hybrid systems. Further studies revealed that a ubiquitous gap of 0.3-3 eV exists, the size of which is mainly governed by the GQD's dimensions whereas it is insensitive to edge structures. These results show that GQDs in BN are promising candidates for optoelectronics.

Abstract:We theoretically analyse the possibility to electrostatically confine electrons in circular quantum dot arrays, impressed on contacted graphene nanoribbons by top gates. Utilising exact numerical techniques, we compute the scattering efficiency of a single dot and demonstrate that for small-sized scatterers the cross-sections are dominated by quantum effects, where resonant scattering leads to a series of quasi-bound dot states. Calculating the conductance and the local density of states for quantum dot superlattices we show that the resonant carrier transport through such graphene-based nanostructures can be easily tuned by varying the gate voltage.

Dirac fermions on wires confined to the graphene Moebius strip

Abstract:We investigate the effects of the curved geometry on a massless relativistic electron constrained to a graphene strip with a Moebius strip shape. The anisotropic and parity-violating geometry of the Moebius band produces a geometric potential that inherits these features. By considering wires along the strip width and the strip length, we find exact solutions for the Dirac equation and the effects of the geometric potential on the electron were explored. In both cases, the geometric potential yields to a geometric phase on the wave function. Along the strip width, the density of states depends on the direction chosen for the wire, a consequence of the lack of axial symmetry. Moreover, the breaking of the parity symmetry enables the electronic states to be concentrated on the inner or on the outer portion of the strip. For wires along the strip length, the nontrivial topology influences the eigenfunctions by modifying their periodicity. It turns out that the ground state has a period of $4\pi$ whereas the first excited state is a $2\pi$ periodic function. Moreover, we found that the energy levels are half-integer multiples of the energy of the ground state.

Abstract:We investigate from first principles the electronic and optical properties of edge-modulated armchair graphene nanoribbons, including both quasi-particle corrections and excitonic effects. Exploiting the oscillating behavior of the ribbon energy gap, we show that minimal width modulations are sufficient to obtain confinement of both electrons and holes, thus forming optically active quantum dots with unique properties, such as cohexistence of dot-like and extended excitations and fine tunability of optical spectra, with great potential for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Quantum electrodynamics (resulting from the merger of quantum mechanics and relativity theory) has provided a clear understanding of phenomena ranging from particle physics to cosmology and from astrophysics to quantum chemistry1,2,3. The ideas underlying quantum electrodynamics also influence the theory of condensed matter4,5, but quantum relativistic effects are usually minute in the known experimental systems that can be described accurately by the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation. Here we report an experimental study of a condensed-matter system (graphene, a single atomic layer of carbon6,7) in which electron transport is essentially governed by Dirac's (relativistic) equation. The charge carriers in graphene mimic relativistic particles with zero rest mass and have an effective ‘speed of light’ c* ≈ 106 m s-1. Our study reveals a variety of unusual phenomena that are characteristic of two-dimensional Dirac fermions. In particular we have observed the following: first, graphene's conductivity never falls below a minimum value corresponding to the quantum unit of conductance, even when concentrations of charge carriers tend to zero; second, the integer quantum Hall effect in graphene is anomalous in that it occurs at half-integer filling factors; and third, the cyclotron mass mc of massless carriers in graphene is described by E = mcc*2. This two-dimensional system is not only interesting in itself but also allows access to the subtle and rich physics of quantum electrodynamics in a bench-top experiment.

Abstract:The electronic structure and optical properties of hexagonal armchair and zigzag-edged graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are investigated within the framework of many-body perturbation theory. Many-body effects are significant due to quantum confinement and reduced screening. The quasi-particle corrections and exciton binding energies can be several eV, much larger than those of other carbon allotropes with higher dimensionality. All the GQDs show similar absorption spectra when electronhole interaction is included, with a prominent peak emerging below the absorption onset of the noninteracting spectrum. This peak is contributed by a pair of double-degenerate excited states originating from the transitions between degenerate frontier orbitals. The spin singlet-triplet splitting is closely related to the electronhole overlap, which can be approximately measured by the overlap between frontier orbitals involved in the optical transitions. The strong many-body effects in GQDs should be of great importance in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons display an imperfectly understood transport gap. We measure transport through nanoribbon devices of several lengths. In nanoribbons of length greater than or equal to 250 nm we observe transport through multiple quantum dots in series, while shorter constrictions of length less than or equal to 60 nm display behavior characteristic of single and double quantum dots. Dot size scales with constriction width. We propose a model where transport occurs through quantum dots that are nucleated by background disorder potentials in the presence of a confinement gap.

Abstract:In Westminster Abbey, in a nave near to Newton's monument, lies a memorial stone to Paul Dirac. The inscription on the stone includes the relativistic wave equation for an electron: the Dirac equation. At the turn of the 21st century, it was discovered that this eponymous equation was not simply the preserve of particle physics. The isolation of graphene by Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov in Manchester led to the exploration of a novel class of materials - Dirac materials - whose electrons behave like Dirac particles. While the mobility of these quasi-relativistic electrons is attractive from the perspective of potential ultrafast devices, it also presents a distinct challenge: how to confine Dirac particles so as to avoid making inherently leaky devices? Here we discuss the unconventional quantum tunnelling of Dirac particles, we explain a strategy to create bound states electrostatically, and we briefly review some pioneering experiments seeking to trap Dirac electrons.

Abstract:We use numerically exact Chebyshev expansion and kernel polynomial methods to study transport through circular graphene quantum dots in the framework of a tight-binding honeycomb lattice model. Our focus lies on the regime where individual modes of the electrostatically defined dot dominate the charge carrier dynamics. In particular, we discuss the scattering of an injected Dirac electron wave packet for a single quantum dot, electron confinement in the dot, the optical excitation of dot-bound modes, and the propagation of an electronic excitation along a linear array of dots.

Abstract:Graphene with honeycomb structure, critically important in understanding physics of matter, exhibits exceptionally unusual half-integer quantum Hall effect and unconventional electronic spectrum with quantum relativistic phenomena. Particularly, graphenelike structure can be used for realizing topological insulator which inspires an intrinsic topological protection mechanism with strong immunity for maintaining coherence of quantum information. These various peculiar physics arise from the unique properties of Dirac cones which show high hole degeneracy, massless charge carriers, and linear intersection of bands. Experimental observation of Dirac cones conventionally focuses on the energy-momentum space with bulk measurement. Here, we demonstrate a direct observation of the movement of Dirac cones from single-photon dynamics in photonic graphene under different biaxial strains. Sharing the same spirit of wave-particle nature in quantum mechanics, we identify the movement of Dirac cones by dynamically detecting the edge modes and extracting the diffusing distance of the packets with accumulation and statistics on individual single-particle registrations. Our results of observing movement of Dirac cones from single-photon dynamics, together with the method of direct observation in real space by mapping the band structure defined in momentum space, paves a novel way to understand and explore a variety of artificial structures.

Abstract:Bilayer graphene has recently earned great attention for its unique electronic properties and commendable use in electronic applications. Here, we report the observation of quantum dot (QD) behaviors in bilayer graphene nanoribbons (BL-GNRs). The periodic Coulomb oscillations indicate the formation of a single quantum dot within the BL-GNR because of the broad distribution function of the carrier concentration fluctuation at the charge neutrality point. The size of the QD changes as we modulate the relative position between the Fermi level and surface potential. Furthermore, the potential barriers forming the QD remain stable at elevated temperatures and external bias. In combination with the observation of transport gaps, our results suggest that the disordered surface potential creates QDs along the ribbon and governs the electronic transport properties in BL-GNRs.

Abstract:Electron hydrodynamics in graphene Electrons can move through graphene in a manner reminiscent of fluids, if the conditions are right. Two groups studied the nature of this hydrodynamic flow in different regimes (see the Perspective by Lucas). Gallagher et al. measured optical conductivity using a waveguide-based setup, revealing signatures of quantum criticality near the charge neutrality point. Berdyugin et al. focused on electron transport in the presence of a magnetic field and measured a counterintuitive contribution to the Hall response that stems from hydrodynamic flow. Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons with perfect edges are predicted to exhibit interesting electronic and spintronic properties 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , notably quantum-confined bandgaps and magnetic edge states. However, so far, graphene nanoribbons produced by lithography have had rough edges, as well as low-temperature transport characteristics dominated by defects (mainly variable range hopping between localized states in a transport gap near the Dirac point 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ). Here, we report that one- and two-layer nanoribbon quantum dots made by unzipping carbon nanotubes 10 exhibit well-defined quantum transport phenomena, including Coulomb blockade, the Kondo effect, clear excited states up to ∼20 meV, and inelastic co-tunnelling. Together with the signatures of intrinsic quantum-confined bandgaps and high conductivities, our data indicate that the nanoribbons behave as clean quantum wires at low temperatures, and are not dominated by defects.
Electronic states in quantum wires on a Möbius strip

Abstract:We study the properties of a two-dimensional non-relativistic electron gas (TDEG) constrained on wires along a Möbius strip. We considered wires around the strip and along the transverse direction, across the width of the strip. For each direction, we investigate how the curvature modifies the electronic states and their corresponding energy spectrum. At the center of the strip, the wires around the surface form quantum rings whose spectrum depends on the strip radius $a$. For wires at the edge of the strip, the inner edge turns into the outer edge. Accordingly, the curvature yields localized states in the middle of the wire. Along the strip width, the effective potential exhibits a parity symmetry breaking leading to the localization of the bound state on one side of the strip.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots could be an ideal host for spin qubits and thus have been extensively investigated based on graphene nanoribbons and etched nanostructures; however, edge and substrate induced disorders severely limit device functionality. Here, we report the confinement of quantum dots in few-layer graphene with tunable barriers, defined by local strain and electrostatic gating. Transport measurements unambiguously reveal that confinement barriers are formed by inducing a band gap via the electrostatic gating together with local strain induced constriction. Numerical simulations according to the local top-gate geometry confirm the band gap opening by a perpendicular electric field. We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the energy-level spectra in these graphene quantum dots. Experimental results reveal a complex evolution of Coulomb oscillations with the magnetic field, featuring kinks at level crossings. The simulation of energy spectrum shows that the kink features and the magnetic field dependence are consistent with experimental observations, implying the hybridized nature of energy-level spectrum of these graphene quantum dots.

Abstract:We report on the observation of periodic conductance oscillations near quantum Hall plateaus in suspended graphene nanoribbons. They are attributed to single quantum dots that form in the narrowest part of the ribbon, in the valleys and hills of a disorder potential. In a wide flake with two gates, a double-dot system's signature has been observed. Electrostatic confinement is enabled in single-layer graphene due to the gaps that form between Landau levels, suggesting a way to create gate-defined quantum dots that can be accessed with quantum Hall edge states.

Abstract:Stimulated by recent advances in isolating graphene, we discovered that quantum dot can be trapped in Z-shaped graphene nanoribbon junciton. The topological structure of the junction can confine electronic states completely. By varying junction length, we can alter the spatial confinement and the number of discrete levels within the junction. In addition, quantum dot can be realized regardless of substrate induced static disorder or irregular edges of the junction. This device can be used to easily design quantum dot devices. This platform can also be used to design zero-dimensional functional nanoscale electronic devices using graphene ribbons.
