Abstract:We summarise the status of an intriguing new duality between planar maximally helicity violating scattering amplitudes and light-like Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills. In particular, we focus on the role played by (dual) conformal symmetry, which is made predictive by deriving anomalous conformal Ward identities for the Wilson loops. Assuming the duality, the conformal symmetry of the dual Wilson loops becomes an unexpected new symmetry of scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to explore and verify the duality relationship between the planar maximal helicity - violating (MHV) scattering amplitudes and the light - cone Wilson loops in the four - dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang - Mills theory (N = 4 SYM). Specifically, the paper focuses on the symmetry behind this duality relationship, especially the dual conformal symmetry, and how this symmetry explains the unexpected simplicity of certain scattering amplitudes. ### Main problems of the paper: 1. **Proposal of the duality relationship**: The paper discusses the duality relationship between the planar MHV scattering amplitudes and specific Wilson loops in N = 4 SYM. This duality relationship was initially proposed under strong coupling through the AdS/CFT correspondence, but the paper extends it to field - theory calculations under weak coupling. 2. **Dual conformal symmetry**: The paper points out that through transformations in the dual coordinate space, it can be found that the integrals of scattering amplitudes have dual conformal symmetry. This symmetry is broken in the infrared - divergent part in four - dimensional spacetime, but still shows strong binding in higher - order calculations. 3. **Verification of the BDS conjecture**: The paper verifies the Bern - Dixon - Smirnov (BDS) conjecture, that is, the finite part of the planar MHV scattering amplitudes can be represented in a simple functional form. Through calculations of Wilson loops, the paper finds that this simplicity can be explained by dual conformal symmetry. 4. **Special case of six - point amplitudes**: For six - point scattering amplitudes, the paper finds that the BDS conjecture needs to be corrected because there are additional dual conformal invariants. Through two - loop calculations, the paper verifies that the corrected BDS formula is consistent with the calculation results of Wilson loops, further supporting the validity of the duality relationship. ### Formula summary: - **Form of the BDS conjecture**: \[ F^{(MHV)}_n = F^{(BDS)}_n \] where \[ F^{(BDS)}_n(a, p_i\cdot p_j)=\frac{1}{2}\Gamma_{\text{cusp}}(a)F^{(MHV)}_{n;1}(p_i\cdot p_j) \] - **Specific forms of four - point and five - point scattering amplitudes**: \[ F^{(BDS)}_4(a, p_i\cdot p_j)=\frac{1}{4}\Gamma_{\text{cusp}}(a)\left[\ln^2\left(\frac{s}{t}\right)+\text{const}\right] \] \[ F^{(BDS)}_5(a, p_i\cdot p_j)=\frac{1}{4}\Gamma_{\text{cusp}}(a)\left[\sum_{i = 1}^5\ln\left(\frac{s_{i,i + 1}}{s_{i+1,i+2}}\right)\ln\left(\frac{s_{i+2,i+3}}{s_{i+3,i+4}}\right)+\text{const}\right] \] - **Dual conformal Ward identity**: \[ \sum_{i = 1}^n\left[2x^\mu_i(x_i\cdot\partial_{x_i})-x_i^2\partial^\mu_{x_i}\right]F^{(WL)}_n=\frac{1}{2}\Gamma_{\text{cusp}}(a)\sum_{i = 1}^n x^\mu_{i,i+1}\ln\left(\frac{x^2_{i,i+2}}{x^2_{i-1,i+1}}\right) \] - **Correction of six - point scattering amplitudes**: \[ F^{(WL)}_6 = F^{(BDS)}_6+f(a; u_1, u_2, u_3) \] where \(u_
