Abstract:A review of the potential sensitivity of the LHCb experiment to the parton distribution functions is given. Studies of dimuon events coming from Z, W and low mass Drell Yan production are presented and compared to MSTW theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Vector meson production in ultra-peripheral pA and AA collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are very sensitive to Parton Distribution Functions (PDF) as well as to their leading-order, next-to-leading-order, and medium corrections. This process is a complimentary tool to explore the effects of different PDFs in particle production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus central collisions. Existing and forthcoming data available, e.g., from ALICE and CMS, may be used in conjunction with our theoretical predictions to constrain the PDFs. We make predictions for rapidity distributions and for cross sections of J/$\psi$ , $\psi(2S)$ and $\Upsilon$ production at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5$ TeV. We use the second energy as representative for the Run 2 of PbPb collisions at the LHC.

Abstract:We present a study of the LHC sensitivity to the W boson mass based on simulation studies. We find that both experimental and phenomenological sources of systematic uncertainties can be strongly constrained with Z measurements: the lineshape, d σ Z /d m , is robustly predicted, and its analysis provides an accurate measurement of the detector resolution and absolute scale, while the differential cross-section analysis, d 2 σ Z /d y d p T , absorbs the strong interaction uncertainties. A sensitivity δ m W ∼7 MeV for each decay channel ( W → e ν , W → μ ν ), and for an integrated luminosity of 10 fb −1 , appears as a reasonable goal.
A study of experimental sensitivities to proton parton distributions with xFitter

Abstract:In collider physics, parton distribution functions (PDFs) play a crucial role in computing theoretical cross sections for scattering reactions. This study explores how different experimental data sets influence extracted PDFs in CTEQ-TEA and MSHT NNLO PDF analyses. To gauge the impact of experimental data, including the HERA and ZEUS combined charm and beauty production, LHCb 7 TeV charm and beauty production, CMS 7 TeV W+c production, and CMS 13 TeV inclusive jets, I utilize the $L_2$ sensitivity statistical indicator in the Hessian framework as a visual representation of their respective impacts. This sensitivity quantifies the statistical pulls on individual data sets against the best-fit PDFs, facilitating the identification of tensions among competing data sets. Using the QCD fitting framework xFitter, I extract the necessary values for plotting $L_2$ sensitivities for ten distinct data sets implemented in the program, employing recent PDF sets from the CTEQ-TEA and MSHT groups. The computed $L_2$ sensitivities estimate the potential impact of the examined data sets.

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) play a central role in calculations for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). To gain a deeper understanding of the emergence and interplay of constraints on the PDFs in the global QCD analyses, it is important to examine the relative significance and mutual compatibility of the experimental data sets included in the PDF fits. Toward this goal, we discuss the L2 sensitivity, a convenient statistical indicator for exploring the statistical pulls of individual data sets on the best-fit PDFs and identifying tensions between competing data sets. Unlike the Lagrange Multiplier method, the L2 sensitivity can be quickly computed for a range of PDFs and momentum fractions using the published Hessian error sets. We employ the L2 sensitivity as a common metric to study the relative importance of data sets in the recent ATLAS, CTEQ-TEA, MSHT, and reduced PDF4LHC21 PDF analyses at NNLO and approximate N3LO. We illustrate how this method can aid the users of PDFs to identify data sets that are important for a PDF at a given kinematic point, to study quark flavor composition and other detailed features of the PDFs, and to compare the data pulls on the PDFs for various perturbative orders and functional forms. We also address the feasibility of computing the sensitivities using Monte Carlo error PDFs. Together with the article, we present a companion interactive website with a large collection of plotted L2 sensitivities for eight recent PDF releases.

Study on the sensitivity of the Higgs boson couplings in photon-photon collision at CLIC and muon collider

Abstract:In a model-independent way, we explore the potential of photon-induced interactions with the process $\gamma^* \gamma^* \rightarrow ZZ$ to investigate CP-conserving and CP-violating dimension-six operators of Higgs-gauge boson couplings using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The existence of anomalous $H\gamma\gamma$ and $HZZ$ couplings is discussed at 3 TeV Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) and 10 TeV Muon Collider (MuC) with integrated luminosities of 5 and 10 ab$^{-1}$, respectively. All signal and relevant background events are generated in MadGraph and passed through PYTHIA for parton showering and hadronization. The detector effects are evaluated using CLIC and MuC detector cards tuned in Delphes. We report the 95% confidence level limits on the Wilson coefficients $\overline{c}_\gamma$, $\overline{c}_{HB}$, $\overline{c}_{HW}$, $\widetilde{c}_\gamma$, $\widetilde{c}_{HB}$, and $\widetilde{c}_{HW}$ and compare them with the experimental and phenomenological limits.

Parton Distribution Functions and Their Impact on Precision of the Current Theory Calculations

Abstract:The unprecedented precision of experimental measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the increased statistics that will be reached in the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC (HL-LHC) are pushing the phenomenology community to a new precision frontier, in which new challenges present themselves and new questions arise. A key ingredients of theoretical predictions at hadron colliders are the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) of the proton. This contribution highlights some of the new developments in the determination of PDFs from a global set of experimental data, from approximate N3LO PDFs and the inclusion of theory uncertainties in PDF fits, to the realisation of the non trivial interplay between parton densities at large-x and possible signals of New Physics in high energy tails of the distributions, which highlights the synergy between high energy and low energy experimental programs.

Precision studies of the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

Abstract:In this study, we examine closely the impact of the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data on parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the general CTEQ-TEA global analysis framework. We compare the two main theoretical predictions, the MCFM fixed order calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and the ResBos2 NNLO matched to $q_T$ resummation up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N3LL) level. We find that the overall inclusive cross sections agree well but the fiducial distributions can differ at a percent level. We mainly discuss the result of the ResBos2 resummation calculation which yields a smaller Monte-Carlo uncertainty, and a better description to the post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data. We find that the majority of post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data are consistent with the ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ data, which were included in the CT18A, but not CT18, fit and increases the strange quark distribution at the small $x$ region. The noticeable exception is that the ATLAS and LHCb 8 TeV $W$ data pull $d(\bar{d})$ quark PDFs to the opposite direction with respect to the ATLAS 7 TeV $W,Z$ data. The inclusion of these post-CT18 LHC Drell-Yan data sets in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis is to update the CT18 PDFs following similar trends as CT18Z PDFs. The parton luminosities and a few phenomenological implications with the fiducial $W^\pm,Z$ and inclusive $H,t\bar{t},t\bar{t}H$ productions at the 14 TeV LHC, as examples, are presented.

Abstract:We present a review of the conceptual basis, current knowledge, and recent progress regarding global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs). After introducing the theoretical foundations and methodological approaches for the extraction of nuclear PDFs from experimental data, we discuss how different measurements in fixed-target and collider experiments provide increasingly precise constraints on various aspects of nuclear PDFs, including shadowing, antishadowing, the EMC effect, Fermi motion, flavor separation, deuteron binding, and target-mass and other higher-twist effects. Particular emphasis is given to measurements carried out in proton–lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, which have revolutionized the global analysis during the past decade. These measurements include electroweak boson, jet, light hadron, and heavy flavor observables. Finally, we outline the expected impact of the future Electron Ion Collider and discuss the role and interplay of nuclear PDFs with other branches of nuclear, particle, and astroparticle physics.

Hide and seek: how PDFs can conceal New Physics

Abstract:The interpretation of LHC data, and the assessment of possible hints of new physics, require the precise knowledge of the proton structure in terms of parton distribution functions (PDFs). We present a systematic methodology designed to determine whether and how global PDF fits might inadvertently 'fit away' signs of new physics in the high-energy tails of the distributions. We showcase a scenario for the High-Luminosity LHC, in which the PDFs may completely absorb such signs of new physics, thus biasing theoretical predictions and interpretations. We discuss strategies to single out the effects in this scenario, and disentangle the inconsistencies that stem from them. Our study brings to light the synergy between the high luminosity programme at the LHC and future low-energy non-LHC measurements of large-$x$ sea quark distributions. The analysis code used in this work is made public so that any users can test the robustness of the signal associated to a given BSM model against absorption by the PDFs.

Abstract:Uncertainties in the parametrization of parton distribution functions (PDFs) are becoming a serious limiting systematic uncertainty in Large Hadron Collider (LHC) searches for beyond the standard model physics. This is especially true for measurements at high scales induced by quark and anti-quark collisions, where Drell-Yan continuum backgrounds are dominant. Tools are recently available which enable exploration of PDF fitting strategies and emulate the effects of new data in a future global fit. EPUMP is such a tool and it is shown that judicious selection of measurable kinematical quantities can reduce the assigned systematic PDF uncertainties by significant factors. This will he made possible by the huge statistical precision of future LHC standard model datasets.
Constraints for nuclear PDFs from the LHCb D-meson data

Abstract:We quantify the impact of LHCb D-meson measurements at $\sqrt{s}=5 \, {\rm TeV}$ on the EPPS16 and nCTEQ15 nuclear PDFs. In our study, the theoretical description of D-meson production is based on the recently developed SACOT-$m_{\rm T}$ variant of the general-mass variable-flavour-number formalism, and the impact on PDFs is estimated via reweighting methods. We pay special attention on the theoretical uncertainties known to us, and are led to exclude the $p_{\rm T}<3 \, {\rm GeV}$ region from our main analysis. The LHCb data can be accommodated well within EPPS16 and nCTEQ15, and the data provide stringent constraints on the gluons in the shadowing/antishadowing regions. No evidence of non-linear effects beyond standard DGLAP evolution is found even if the full kinematic region down to zero $p_{\rm T}$ is considered.

Abstract:We present a method that maximizes the experimental sensitivity to new physics contributions in B±→π±μ+μ− decays. This method relies on performing an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to both the measured dimuon q2 distribution of B±→π±μ+μ− decays, and theory calculations at spacelike q2 , where QCD predictions are most reliable. Using known properties of the decay amplitude we employ a dispersion relation to describe the nonlocal hadronic contributions across spacelike and timelike q2 regions. The fit stability and the sensitivity to new physics couplings and new sources of CP -violation are studied for current and future data-taking scenarios, with the LHCb experiment as an example. Abstract:First, we calculate the total cross-sections and differential cross-sections of the W and Z productions at next-to-leading order QCD using ResBos and CT14HERA2 PDFs, and compare with the measurements from the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and find good agreement between the experimental data and theoretical predictions. Then, we analyze the impact of LHCb 8 TeV W , Z , and asymmetry data on CT14HERA2 PDFs( g ( x , Q ) , u ( x , Q ) , d ( x , Q ) , u ̄ ( x , Q ) , d ̄ ( x , Q ) , d ( x , Q ) / u ( x , Q ) ) using the Error PDF Updating Method Package. Through this analysis, we find that the LHCb 8 TeV W and Z data prefer softer gloun and d ( x , Q ) at large x region, but have no significant impacts on u ( x , Q ) PDF.

Unravelling New Physics Signals at the HL-LHC with Low-Energy Constraints

Abstract:Recent studies suggest that global fits of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) might inadvertently 'fit away' signs of new physics in the high-energy tails of the distributions measured at the high luminosity programme of the LHC (HL-LHC). This could lead to spurious effects that might conceal key BSM signatures and hinder the success of indirect searches for new physics. In this letter, we demonstrate that future deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), and at CERN via FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC at LHC Run III, and the future neutrino experiments to be hosted at the proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF) at the HL-LHC, provide complementary constraints on large-$x$ sea quarks. These constraints are crucial to mitigate the risk of missing key BSM signals, by enabling precise constraints on large-$x$ PDFs through a 'BSM-safe' integration of both high- and low-energy data, which is essential for a robust interpretation of the high-energy measurements.

Interplay between Parton Distribution Functions and New Physics signals

Abstract:The analysis and the interpretation of the LHC data require a precise determination of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) in order to detect reliably potential signs of new physics. I present a systematic study designed to assess the risk of absorbing, and thus missing, signals from heavy new physics in the PDFs parameterisation during the High-Luminosity LHC run. I discuss the consequences of such a PDF "contamination" and consider possible solutions to it, for example the inclusion of other experimental data probing large-x regions at low-energy.

Abstract:We present a new QCD analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). In the present paper, the role of special types of experimental measurements for extracting PDFs is investigated, and simultaneously the values of the strong coupling constant are determined. Essential elements of this QCD analysis are the HERA combined data as a base, heavy-quark cross-section measurement together with Tevatron data on jet production and H1 and ZEUS jet cross sections as "non-LHC" data, and especially the "LHC" dataset for top-quark and jet cross sections. These different datasets have allowed detailed information at low x , providing worthwhile information on the nucleon's flavor, and have played an important role for some PDFs at large- x and strong coupling constant. Since the large- x gluon PDF benefits from an accurate determination of quark PDFs, we have enough motivation to focus on the top-quark production and jet cross-section measurements from LHC to find the impact of these data on the gluon PDF and strong coupling constant. These experimental data have an impact on the relative uncertainties of PDF. The gluon PDF at large x and the values of αs(MZ2) are affected significantly. Although the main motivation of this paper is to focus on the gluon PDF and its uncertainty at large- x , giving notice to heavy PDF behavior in this region is also very important. Abstract:A sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV (V=W-+/-,Z(0)) couplings via pp -> W(+)W(+)jj ->center dot(+)nu center dot(+)nu jj at LHC was proposed by Zhang, Kuang, He, and Yuan [Phys. Rev. D 67, 114024 (2003)]. We studied the sensitivity to measure the anomalous gauge couplings of Higgs boson with optimized cuts. In this way, the sensitivity can be enhanced. Based on the optimized cuts and distribution of Delta Pt(center dot center dot), the measurement of the couplings can be further improved with a binned maximum likelihood fit. It shows that, with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb(-1), the anomalous HWW and HZZ couplings can be measured at the level of 0.007-0.032 and 0.007-0.013 TeV-1, respectively, for the linearly realized effective Lagrangian.
New CTEQ global analysis of quantum chromodynamics with high-precision data from the LHC

Abstract:We present the new parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA collaboration, obtained using a wide variety of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, in addition to the combined HERA I+II deep-inelastic scattering data set, along with the data sets present in the CT14 global QCD analysis. New LHC measurements in single-inclusive jet production with the full rapidity coverage, as well as production of Drell-Yan pairs, top-quark pairs, and high-$p_T$ $Z$ bosons, are included to achieve the greatest sensitivity to the PDFs. The parton distributions are determined at NLO and NNLO, with each of these PDFs accompanied by error sets determined using the Hessian method. Fast PDF survey techniques, based on the Hessian representation and the Lagrange Multiplier method, are used to quantify the preference of each data set to quantities such as $\alpha_s(m_Z)$, and the gluon and strange quark distributions. We designate the main resulting PDF set as CT18. The ATLAS 7 TeV precision $W/Z$ data are not included in CT18, due to their tension with other data sets in the global fit. Alternate PDF sets are generated including the ATLAS precision 7 TeV $W/Z$ data (CT18A), a new scale choice for low-$x$ DIS data (CT18X), or all of the above with a slightly higher choice for the charm mass (CT18Z). Theoretical calculations of standard candle cross sections at the LHC (such as the $gg$ fusion Higgs boson cross section) are presented.
