Abstract:This paper studies the capacity of discrete-time multipath fading channels. It is assumed that the number of paths is finite, i.e., that the channel output is influenced by the present and by the L previous channel inputs. A noncoherent channel model is considered where neither transmitter nor receiver are cognizant of the fading's realization, but both are aware of its statistic. The focus is on capacity at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). In particular, the capacity pre-loglog - defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to loglog SNR as SNR tends to infinity - is studied. It is shown that, irrespective of the number paths L, the capacity pre-loglog is 1.

Capacity Results for Non-Ergodic Multi-Modal Broadcast Channels with Controllable Statistics

Abstract:Movable antennas and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces enable a new paradigm in which channel statistics can be controlled and altered. Further, the known trajectory and operation protocol of communication satellites results in networks with predictable statistics. The predictability of future changes results in a non-ergodic model for which the fundamentals are largely unknown. We consider the canonical two-user broadcast erasure channel in which channel statistics vary at a priori known points. We consider a multi-modal setting with two non-transient modes (whose lengths scale linearly with the blocklength) and an arbitrary number of transient modes. We provide a new set of outer-bounds on the capacity region of this problem when the encoder has access to causal ACK/NACK feedback. The outer-bounds reveal the significant role of the non-transient mode with higher erasure probability both on the outer and the inner bounds. We show the outer-bounds are achievable in non-trivial regimes, characterizing the capacity region for a wide range of parameters. We also discuss the regimes where the inner and outer bounds diverge and analyze the gap between the two. A key finding of this work is the significant gain of inter-modal coding over the separate treating of individual modes.

Abstract:This paper presents results of ergodic capacity of frequency selective multipath fading channels with path correlations. The exact capacity expression is derived. The main result establishes that, for the uncorrelated case, the ergodic capacity does not depend on either the number of taps or the power delay profile of the channel. However when tap correlation is taken into account, this statement is no longer valid, and high dependence on the channel profile is observed. Although it is impossible to test the impact of different tap correlation models exhaustively, detailed analytical study is carried out under a particular neighbor tap correlation model, i.e., only two neighbor taps are correlated. The worst case that yields the minimal capacity is identified after the intractable and non-convex problem is translated into a convex optimization one. An exact analytical power delay profile for arbitrary number of taps is derived in this case.

Abstract:We consider quantum channels with two senders and one receiver. For an arbitrary such channel, we give multi-letter characterizations of two different two-dimensional capacity regions. The first region characterizes the rates at which it is possible for one sender to send classical information while the other sends quantum information. The second region gives the rates at which each sender can send quantum information. We give an example of a channel for which each region has a single-letter description, concluding with a characterization of the rates at which each user can simultaneously send classical and quantum information.

Abstract:It is well known that the existence of spatial fading correlation and keyhole effects severely reduces the capacity of multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) channels. In this letter, for correlated Rayleigh frequency-flat fading channels with keyholes, a tight lower capacity bound is given in a closed form. For the uncorrelated case, the lower bound can be proved to be tight asymptotically. The tightness of this bound for both correlated and uncorrelated channels is demonstrated by numerical examples.

We conclude with connections to other work and a discussion on generalizations where each user simultaneously sends classical and quantum information.

Abstract:Quantum capacity, as the ultimate transmission rate of quantum communication, is characterized by regularized coherent information. In this work, we reformulate approximations of the quantum capacity by operator space norms and give both upper and lower bounds on quantum capacity, and potential quantum capacity using interpolation techniques. We identify a situation in which nice classes of channels satisfy a "comparison property" on entropy, coherent information and capacities. The paradigms for our estimates are so-called conditional expectations. These generally non-degradable channels admit a strongly additive expression for $Q^{(1)}$. We also identify conditions on channels showing that the "hashing bound" is optimal for the cb-entropy. These two estimates combined give upper and lower bounds on quantum capacity on our "nice" classes of channels, which differ only up to a factor 2, independent of the dimension. The estimates are discussed for certain classes of channels, including group channels, Pauli channels and other high-dimensional channels.

Abstract:This paper considers the capacity of non-coherent Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) fading channels with memory. A general decomposition for the MIMO mutual information is found first, then asymptotic lower and upper bounds are derived based on the decomposition. It is found that the upper and the lower bound will converge and a MIMO fading number is derived when the number of receive antennas approaches to infinity. It is shown that inputs with independent Euclidean norm and phase-amplitude-ratio vector can achieve this fading number when the number of receive antennas is large. The derived MIMO fading number reduces to the fading number of Single-input Multiple-Output (SIMO) systems. A MIMO non-asymptotic lower bound also is presented.
Asymptotic Capacity of 1-Bit MIMO Fading Channels

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the capacity of multi-antenna fading channels with 1-bit quantized output per receive antenna. Specifically, leveraging Bayesian statistical tools, we analyze the asymptotic regime with a large number of receive antennas. In the coherent case, where the channel state information (CSI) is known at the receiver's side, we completely characterize the asymptotic capacity and provide the exact scaling in the extreme regimes of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the number of transmit antennas. In the non-coherent case, where the CSI is unknown but remains constant during T symbol periods, we first obtain the exact asymptotic capacity for T<=3. Then, we propose a scheme involving uniform signaling in the covariance space and derive a non-asymptotic lower bound on the capacity for an arbitrary block size T. Furthermore, we propose a genie-aided upper bound where the channel is revealed to the receiver. We show that the upper and lower bounds coincide when T is large. In the low SNR regime, we derive the asymptotic capacity up to a vanishing term, which, remarkably, matches our capacity lower bound.

Generic nonadditivity of quantum capacity in simple channels

Abstract:Determining capacities of quantum channels is a fundamental question in quantum information theory. Despite having rigorous coding theorems quantifying the flow of information across quantum channels, their capacities are poorly understood due to super-additivity effects. Studying these phenomena is important for deepening our understanding of quantum information, yet simple and clean examples of super-additive channels are scarce. Here we study a family of channels called platypus channels. Its simplest member, a qutrit channel, is shown to display super-additivity of coherent information when used jointly with a variety of qubit channels. Higher-dimensional family members display super-additivity of quantum capacity together with an erasure channel. Subject to the "spin-alignment conjecture" introduced in the companion paper [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 69(6), pp. 3825-3849, 2023; <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.08380" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.08380">arXiv:2202.08380</a>], our results on super-additivity of quantum capacity extend to lower-dimensional channels as well as larger parameter ranges. In particular, super-additivity occurs between two weakly additive channels each with large capacity on their own, in stark contrast to previous results. Remarkably, a single, novel transmission strategy achieves super-additivity in all examples. Our results show that super-additivity is much more prevalent than previously thought. It can occur across a wide variety of channels, even when both participating channels have large quantum capacity.

Abstract:We analyze a mobile wireless link comprising M transmitter and N receiver antennas operating in a Rayleigh flat-fading environment. The propagation coefficients between pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas are statistically independent and unknown; they remain constant for a coherence interval of T symbol periods, after which they change to new independent values which they maintain for another T symbol periods, and so on. Computing the link capacity, associated with channel coding over multiple fading intervals, requires an optimization over the joint density of T/spl middot/M complex transmitted signals. We prove that there is no point in making the number of transmitter antennas greater than the length of the coherence interval: the capacity for M>T is equal to the capacity for M=T. Capacity is achieved when the T/spl times/M transmitted signal matrix is equal to the product of two statistically independent matrices: a T/spl times/T isotropically distributed unitary matrix times a certain T/spl times/M random matrix that is diagonal, real, and nonnegative. This result enables us to determine capacity for many interesting cases. We conclude that, for a fixed number of antennas, as the length of the coherence interval increases, the capacity approaches the capacity obtained as if the receiver knew the propagation coefficients.

Abstract:We determine the ultimate classical information capacity of a linear time-invariant bosonic channel with additive phase-insensitive Gaussian noise. This channel can model fiber-optic communication at power levels below the threshold for significant nonlinear effects. We provide a general continuous-time result that gives the ultimate capacity for such a channel operating in the quasimonochromatic regime under an average power constraint. This ultimate capacity is compared with corresponding results for heterodyne and homodyne detection over the same channel.

Abstract:The scaling of coherent and non-coherent channel capacity is studied in a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) block Rayleigh fading channel as both the bandwidth and the number of receiver antennas go to infinity jointly with the transmit power fixed. The transmitter has no channel state information (CSI), while the receiver may have genie-provided CSI (coherent receiver), or the channel statistics only (non-coherent receiver). Our results show that if the available bandwidth is smaller than a threshold bandwidth which is proportional (up to leading order terms) to the square root of the number of antennas, there is no gap between the coherent capacity and the non-coherent capacity in terms of capacity scaling behavior. On the other hand, when the bandwidth is larger than this threshold, there is a capacity scaling gap. Since achievable rates using pilot symbols for channel estimation are subject to the non-coherent capacity bound, this work reveals that pilot-assisted coherent receivers in systems with a large number of receive antennas are unable to exploit excess spectrum above a given threshold for capacity gain.

Abstract:In this paper, new upper and lower bounds are proposed for the capacity of discrete-time Laguerre channel. Laguerre behavior is used to model various types of optical systems and networks such as optical amplifiers, short distance visible light communication systems with direct detection and coherent code division multiple access (CDMA) networks. Bounds are derived for short distance visible light communication systems and coherent CDMA networks. These bounds are separated in three main cases: when both average and peak power constraints are imposed, when peak power constraint is inactive and when only peak power constraint is active.

Abstract:The effective capacity of communication systems over generalised kappa-mu shadowed fading channels is investigated. A novel and analytical expression for the exact effective capacity is derived in terms of the extended generalised bivariate Meijer's-G function. To intuitively reveal the impact of the system and channel parameters on the effective capacity, closed-form expressions are derived for the effective capacity in the asymptotically high signal-to-noise ratio regime. The results demonstrate that the effective capacity is a monotonically increasing function of channel fading parameters kappa and mu as well as the shadowing parameter m, while it decays to zero when the delay constraint theta -> infinity.
Finite-Time Capacity: Making Exceed-Shannon Possible?

Abstract:Shannon-Hartley theorem can accurately calculate the channel capacity when the signal observation time is infinite. However, the calculation of finite-time capacity, which remains unknown, is essential for guiding the design of practical communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the capacity between two correlated Gaussian processes within a finite-time observation window. We first derive the finite-time capacity by providing a limit expression. Then we numerically compute the maximum transmission rate within a single finite-time window. We reveal that the number of bits transmitted per second within the finite-time window can exceed the classical Shannon capacity, which is called as the Exceed-Shannon phenomenon. Furthermore, we derive a finite-time capacity formula under a typical signal autocorrelation case by utilizing the Mercer expansion of trace class operators, and reveal the connection between the finite-time capacity problem and the operator theory. Finally, we analytically prove the existence of the Exceed-Shannon phenomenon in this typical case, and demonstrate the achievability of the finite-time capacity and its compatibility with the classical Shannon capacity.

Abstract:This paper investigates the ergodic capacity limit of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Nakagami-fading channels for arbitrary finite number of antennas. Through the use of majorization theory, we derive ergodic capacity bounds for this general class of channels. In the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime, we show that a simple expression for the capacity upper bound is available, which reveals the impact of channel fading parameter on the system ergodic capacity. Besides, the asymptotic behavior of the ergodic capacity where the number of antenna(s) at one or both side(s) goes to infinity, is studied. By considering the low SNR regime, on the other hand, we give an approximation and a lower bound for the ergodic capacity. Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to verify the tightness of the proposed bounds.

Abstract:This paper, mostly tutorial in nature, deals with the problem of characterizing the capacity of fading channels in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. We focus on the practically relevant noncoherent setting, where neither transmitter nor receiver know the channel realizations, but both are aware of the channel law. We present, in an intuitive and accessible form, two tools, first proposed by Lapidoth & Moser (2003), of fundamental importance to high-SNR capacity analysis: the duality approach and the escape-to-infinity property of capacity-achieving distributions. Furthermore, we apply these tools to refine some of the results that appeared previously in the literature and to simplify the corresponding proofs.
