Abstract:We consider the age-old problem of allocating items among different agents in a way that is efficient and fair. Two papers, by Dolev et al. and Ghodsi et al., have recently studied this problem in the context of computer systems. Both papers had similar models for agent preferences, but advocated different notions of fairness. We formalize both fairness notions in economic terms, extending them to apply to a larger family of utilities. Noting that in settings with such utilities efficiency is easily achieved in multiple ways, we study notions of fairness as criteria for choosing between different efficient allocations. Our technical results are algorithms for finding fair allocations corresponding to two fairness notions: Regarding the notion suggested by Ghodsi et al., we present a polynomial-time algorithm that computes an allocation for a general class of fairness notions, in which their notion is included. For the other, suggested by Dolev et al., we show that a competitive market equilibrium achieves the desired notion of fairness, thereby obtaining a polynomial-time algorithm that computes such a fair allocation and solving the main open problem raised by Dolev et al.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of the "Kolkata Paise Restaurant problem". The problem is the following: In each period, N agents have to choose between N restaurants. Agents have a common ranking of the restaurants. Restaurants can only serve one customer. When more than one customer arrives at the same restaurant, one customer is chosen at random and is served; the others do not get the service. We first introduce the one-shot versions of the Kolkata Paise Restaurant problem which we call one-shot KPR games. We then study the dynamics of the Kolkata Paise Restaurant problem (which is a repeated game version of any given one shot KPR game) for large N. For statistical analysis, we explore the long time steady state behavior. In many such models with myopic agents we get under-utilization of resources, that is, we get a lower aggregate payoff compared to the social optimum. We study a number of myopic strategies, focusing on the average occupation fraction of restaurants.

Abstract:Achieving a balance of supply and demand in a multi-agent system with many individual self-interested and rational agents that act as suppliers and consumers is a natural problem in a variety of real-life domains---smart power grids, data centers, and others. In this paper, we address the profit-maximization problem for a group of distributed supplier and consumer agents, with no inter-agent communication. We simulate a scenario of a market with $S$ suppliers and $C$ consumers such that at every instant, each supplier agent supplies a certain quantity and simultaneously, each consumer agent consumes a certain quantity. The information about the total amount supplied and consumed is only kept with the center. The proposed algorithm is a combination of the classical additive-increase multiplicative-decrease (AIMD) algorithm in conjunction with a probabilistic rule for the agents to respond to a capacity signal. This leads to a nonhomogeneous Markov chain and we show almost sure convergence of this chain to the social optimum, for our market of distributed supplier and consumer agents. Employing this AIMD-type algorithm, the center sends a feedback message to the agents in the supplier side if there is a scenario of excess supply, or to the consumer agents if there is excess consumption. Each agent has a concave utility function whose derivative tends to 0 when an optimum quantity is supplied/consumed. Hence when social convergence is reached, each agent supplies or consumes a quantity which leads to its individual maximum profit, without the need of any communication. So eventually, each agent supplies or consumes a quantity which leads to its individual maximum profit, without communicating with any other agents. Our simulations show the efficacy of this approach.

Abstract:In today's dynamic and interconnected world, resource constraints pose significant challenges across various domains, ranging from networks, logistics and manufacturing to project management and optimization, etc. Resource-constrained problems (RCPs) represent a class of complex computational problems that require efficient allocation and utilization of limited resources to achieve optimal outcomes. This thesis aims to delve into such problems involving multiple agents, where agents aim to enhance their own payoffs, or a neutral moderator aims to maximise the system revenue while distributing the resources appropriately among all agents. In the former type of problems, agents may seek collaboration to achieve higher individual shares, resulting in a cooperative game with competition, i.e., co-opetition. Cooperative and non-cooperative game theory tools are utilized to analyze such games. On the other hand, for the latter kind of problems, we use tools from optimization and Markov decision processes.

Abstract:We consider the problem of envy-free cake cutting, which is the distribution of a continuous heterogeneous resource among self interested players such that nobody prefers what somebody else receives to what they get. Existing work has focused on two distinct classes of solutions to this problem - allocations which give each player a continuous piece of cake and allocations which give each player arbitrarily many disjoint pieces of cake. Our aim is to investigate allocations between these two extremes by parameterizing the maximum number of disjoint pieces each player may receive. We characterize the Price of Indivisibility (POI) as the gain achieved in social welfare (utilitarian and egalitarian), by moving from allocations which give each player a continuous piece of cake to allocations that may give each player up to $k$ disjoint pieces of cake. Our results contain bounds for the Price of Indivisibility for utilitarian as well as egalitarian social welfare, and for envy-free cake cutting as well as cake cutting without any fairness constraints.

Repeated Fair Allocation of Indivisible Items

Abstract:The problem of fairly allocating a set of indivisible items is a well-known challenge in the field of (computational) social choice. In this scenario, there is a fundamental incompatibility between notions of fairness (such as envy-freeness and proportionality) and economic efficiency (such as Pareto-optimality). However, in the real world, items are not always allocated once and for all, but often repeatedly. For example, the items may be recurring chores to distribute in a household. Motivated by this, we initiate the study of the repeated fair division of indivisible goods and chores, and propose a formal model for this scenario. In this paper, we show that, if the number of repetitions is a multiple of the number of agents, there always exists a sequence of allocations that is proportional and Pareto-optimal. On the other hand, irrespective of the number of repetitions, an envy-free and Pareto-optimal sequence of allocations may not exist. For the case of two agents, we show that if the number of repetitions is even, it is always possible to find a sequence of allocations that is overall envy-free and Pareto-optimal. We then prove even stronger fairness guarantees, showing that every allocation in such a sequence satisfies some relaxation of envy-freeness. Finally, in case that the number of repetitions can be chosen freely, we show that envy-free and Pareto-optimal allocations are achievable for any number of agents.

Abstract:In many resource allocation problems, economy efficiency must be taken into consideration together with social equality, and price rigidities are often made according to some economic and social needs. We investigate the computational issues of dynamic mechanisms for selling multiple indivisible objects under price rigidities. We propose a multiple agents protocol and algorithm with polynomial time complexity that can achieve the over-demanded sets of items, and then introduce a dynamic mechanism with rationing to discover constrainedWalrasian equilibria under price rigidities in polynomial time. We also address the computation of buyers' expected profits and items' expected prices, and discuss strategical issues in the sense of expected profits.

Abstract:Cooperative game theory deals with systems where players want to cooperate to improve their payoffs. But players may choose coalitions in a non-cooperative manner, leading to a coalition-formation game. We consider such a game with several players (willing to cooperate) and an adamant player (unwilling to cooperate) involved in resource-sharing. Here, the strategy of a player is the set of players with whom it wants to form a coalition. Given a strategy profile, an appropriate partition of coalitions is formed; players in each coalition maximize their collective utilities leading to a non-cooperative resource-sharing game among the coalitions, the utilities at the resulting equilibrium are shared via Shapley-value; these shares define the utilities of players for the given strategy profile in coalition-formation game. We also consider the utilitarian solution to derive the price of anarchy (PoA). We considered a case with symmetric players and an adamant player; wherein we observed that players prefer to stay alone at Nash equilibrium when the number of players (n) is more than 4. In contrast, in the majority of the cases, the utilitarian partition is grand coalition. Interestingly the PoA is smaller with an adamant player of intermediate strength. Further, PoA grows like O(n).

A New Approach to Fair Distribution of Welfare

Abstract:We consider transferable-utility profit-sharing games that arise from settings in which agents need to jointly choose one of several alternatives, and may use transfers to redistribute the welfare generated by the chosen alternative. One such setting is the Shared-Rental problem, in which students jointly rent an apartment and need to decide which bedroom to allocate to each student, depending on the student's preferences. Many solution concepts have been proposed for such settings, ranging from mechanisms without transfers, such as Random Priority and the Eating mechanism, to mechanisms with transfers, such as envy free solutions, the Shapley value, and the Kalai-Smorodinsky bargaining solution. We seek a solution concept that satisfies three natural properties, concerning efficiency, fairness and decomposition. We observe that every solution concept known (to us) fails to satisfy at least one of the three properties. We present a new solution concept, designed so as to satisfy the three properties. A certain submodularity condition (which holds in interesting special cases such as the Shared-Rental setting) implies both existence and uniqueness of our solution concept.

Abstract:In the standard model of fair allocation of resources to agents, every agent has some utility for every resource, and the goal is to assign resources to agents so that the agents' welfare is maximized. Motivated by job scheduling, interest in this problem dates back to the work of Deuermeyer et al. [SIAM J. on Algebraic Discrete Methods'82]. Recent works consider the compatibility between resources and assign only mutually compatible resources to an agent. We study a fair allocation problem in which we are given a set of agents, a set of resources, a utility function for every agent over a set of resources, and a {\it conflict graph} on the set of resources (where an edge denotes incompatibility). The goal is to assign resources to the agents such that $(i)$ the set of resources allocated to an agent are compatible with each other, and $(ii)$ the minimum satisfaction of an agent is maximized, where the satisfaction of an agent is the sum of the utility of the assigned resources. Chiarelli et al. [Algorithmica'22] explore this problem from the classical complexity perspective to draw the boundary between the cases that are polynomial-time solvable and those that are \NP-hard. In this article, we study the parameterized complexity of the problem (and its variants) by considering several natural and structural parameters.

Abstract:A network model of manufacturing system is considered. This is a network formation game where players are participants of a production process and their actions are their's requests for interaction. Production networks are formed as a result of an interaction. Players' payoff functions are defined on the set of all possible networks. In this paper the special case of network formation games is considered. Payoff functions are supposed to be additive and depend on subsets of arcs. Two cases are considered. First, subsets of arcs are supposed to be not intersected. The necessary and sufficient conditions for equilibrium are given for this case. The second case is the one where subsets of arcs are determined by 3-agent coalitions. An illustrative example is given where equilibria and a compromise solution are found.

Abstract:The study of matching theory has gained importance recently with applications in Kidney Exchange, House Allocation, School Choice etc. The general theme of these problems is to allocate goods in a fair manner amongst participating agents. The agents generally have a unit supply/demand of a good that they want to exchange with other agents. On the other hand, Bochet et al. study a more general version of the problem where they allow for agents to have arbitrary number of divisible goods to be rationed to other agents in the network. In this current work, our main focus is on non-bipartite networks where agents have arbitrary units of a homogeneous indivisible good that they want to exchange with their neighbors. Our aim is to develop mechanisms that would identify a fair and strategyproof allocation for the agents in the network. Thus, we generalize the kidney exchange problem to that of a network with arbitrary capacity of available goods. Our main idea is that this problem and a couple of other related versions of non-bipartite fair allocation problem can be suitably transformed to one of fair allocations on bipartite networks for which we know of well studied fair allocation mechanisms.

Abstract:We address the optimal allocation of stochastically dependent resource bundles to a set of simultaneous contests. For this purpose, we study a modification of the Colonel Blotto Game called the Tennis Coach Problem. We devise a thoroughly probabilistic method of payoff representation and fully characterize equilibria in this class of games. We further formalize the idea of strategic team training in a comparative static setting. The problem applies to several distinct economic interactions but seems most prevalent in team sports with individual matches, for instance, in Tennis and Sumo.

Abstract:We consider the problem of fairly allocating indivisible public goods. We model the public goods as elements with feasibility constraints on what subsets of elements can be chosen, and assume that agents have additive utilities across elements. Our model generalizes existing frameworks such as fair public decision making and participatory budgeting. We study a groupwise fairness notion called the core, which generalizes well-studied notions of proportionality and Pareto efficiency, and requires that each subset of agents must receive an outcome that is fair relative to its size. In contrast to the case of divisible public goods (where fractional allocations are permitted), the core is not guaranteed to exist when allocating indivisible public goods. Our primary contributions are the notion of an additive approximation to the core (with a tiny multiplicative loss), and polynomial time algorithms that achieve a small additive approximation, where the additive factor is relative to the largest utility of an agent for an element. If the feasibility constraints define a matroid, we show an additive approximation of 2. A similar approach yields a constant additive bound when the feasibility constraints define a matching. For feasibility constraints defining an arbitrary packing polytope with mild restrictions, we show an additive guarantee that is logarithmic in the width of the polytope. Our algorithms are based on the convex program for maximizing the Nash social welfare, but differ significantly from previous work in how it is used. As far as we are aware, our work is the first to approximate the core in indivisible settings.

Abstract:In this paper we study the problem of allocating a scarce resource among several players (or agents). A central decision maker wants to maximize the total utility of all agents. However, such a solution may be unfair for one or more agents in the sense that it can be achieved through a very unbalanced allocation of the resource. On the other hand fair/balanced allocations may be far from being optimal from a central point of view. So, in this paper we are interested in assessing the quality of fair solutions, i.e. in measuring the system efficiency loss under a fair allocation compared to the one that maximizes the sum of agents utilities. This indicator is usually called the Price of Fairness and we study it under three different definitions of fairness, namely maximin, Kalai-Smorodinski and proportional fairness. Our results are of two different types. We first formalize a number of properties holding for any general multi-agent problem without any special assumption on the agents utility sets. Then we introduce an allocation problem, where each agent can consume the resource in given discrete quantities (items), such that the maximization of the total utility is given by a Subset Sum Problem. For the resulting Fair Subset Sum Problem, in the case of two agents, we provide upper and lower bounds on the Price of Fairness as functions of an upper bound on the items size.

Abstract:This paper surveys some applications of cooperative game theory to supply chain management. Special emphasis is placed on two important aspects of cooperative games: profit allocation and stability. The paper first describes the construction of the set of feasible outcomes in commonly seen supply chain models, and then uses cooperative bargaining models to find allocations of the profit pie between supply chain partners. In doing so, several models are analyzed and surveyed, and include suppliers selling to competing retailers, and assemblers negotiating with component manufacturers selling complementary components. The second part of the paper discusses the issue of coalition formation among supply chain partners. An exhaustive survey of commonly used stability concepts is presented. Further, new ideas such as farsightedness among supply chain players are also discussed and analyzed. The paper also opens some avenues of future research in applying cooperative game theory to supply chain management.

On Fair and Efficient Allocations of Indivisible Public Goods

Abstract:We study fair allocation of indivisible public goods subject to cardinality (budget) constraints. In this model, we have n agents and m available public goods, and we want to select $k \leq m$ goods in a fair and efficient manner. We first establish fundamental connections between the models of private goods, public goods, and public decision making by presenting polynomial-time reductions for the popular solution concepts of maximum Nash welfare (MNW) and leximin. These mechanisms are known to provide remarkable fairness and efficiency guarantees in private goods and public decision making settings. We show that they retain these desirable properties even in the public goods case. We prove that MNW allocations provide fairness guarantees of Proportionality up to one good (Prop1), $1/n$ approximation to Round Robin Share (RRS), and the efficiency guarantee of Pareto Optimality (PO). Further, we show that the problems of finding MNW or leximin-optimal allocations are NP-hard, even in the case of constantly many agents, or binary valuations. This is in sharp contrast to the private goods setting that admits polynomial-time algorithms under binary valuations. We also design pseudo-polynomial time algorithms for computing an exact MNW or leximin-optimal allocation for the cases of (i) constantly many agents, and (ii) constantly many goods with additive valuations. We also present an O(n)-factor approximation algorithm for MNW which also satisfies RRS, Prop1, and 1/2-Prop.

Egalitarian Resource Sharing Over Multiple Rounds

Abstract: It is often beneficial for agents to pool their resources in order to better accommodate fluctuations in individual demand. Many multi-round resource allocation mechanisms operate in an online manner: in each round, the agents specify their demands for that round, and the mechanism determines a corresponding allocation. In this paper, we focus instead on the offline setting in which the agents specify their demand for each round at the outset. We formulate a specific resource allocation problem in this setting, and design and analyze an associated mechanism based on the solution concept of lexicographic maximin fairness. We present an efficient implementation of our mechanism, and prove that it is envy-free, non-wasteful, resource monotonic, population monotonic, and group strategyproof. We also prove that our mechanism guarantees each agent at least half of the utility that they can obtain by not sharing their resources. We complement these positive results by proving that no maximin fair mechanism can improve on the aforementioned factor of one-half.

Abstract:We study the classic problem of dividing a collection of indivisible resources in a fair and efficient manner among a set of agents having varied preferences. Pareto optimality is a standard notion of economic efficiency, which states that it should be impossible to find an allocation that improves some agent's utility without reducing any other's. On the other hand, a fundamental notion of fairness in resource allocation settings is that of envy-freeness, which renders an allocation to be fair if every agent (weakly) prefers her own bundle over that of any other agent's bundle. Unfortunately, an envy-free allocation may not exist if we wish to divide a collection of indivisible items. Introducing randomness is a typical way of circumventing the non-existence of solutions, and therefore, allocation lotteries, i.e., distributions over allocations have been explored while relaxing the notion of fairness to ex-ante envy freeness. We consider a general fair division setting with $n$ agents and a family of admissible $n$-partitions of an underlying set of items. Every agent is endowed with partition-based utilities, which specify her cardinal utility for each bundle of items in every admissible partition. In such fair division instances, Cole and Tao (2021) have proved that an ex-ante envy-free and Pareto-optimal allocation lottery is always guaranteed to exist. We strengthen their result while examining the computational complexity of the above total problem and establish its membership in the complexity class PPAD. Furthermore, for instances with a constant number of agents, we develop a polynomial-time algorithm to find an ex-ante envy-free and Pareto-optimal allocation lottery. On the negative side, we prove that maximizing social welfare over ex-ante envy-free and Pareto-optimal allocation lotteries is NP-hard.

Abstract:Online community (OC, or termed as "virtual community") provides a social sphere for people to share their information, knowledge and other resources. It is becoming an unprecedentedly ubiquitous online phenomenon. The contents which are jointly provided by participants are considered as public goods (Kollock, 1999). For public goods provided by collective action, there have been many papers since Olson (1965) and Hardin (1968). The major concern and conclusion are that enough public goods cannot be provided by rational individuals in collective action. This argument is also applicable to OC because OC will collapse if everyone shirks and free rides others. In the attention economy, however, information overloading becomes a major concern as well, and in response many search and recommendation technologies and services were developed in the Internet including OC. In this case, it seems that "too much" rather than "not enough" public goods are provided in OC. Surprisingly, phenomenon indicates that both "not enough" and "too much" are possible, which contradicts the conclusion of traditional literatures. Hence, this study aims to address why both possibilities exist in OC. How are different results realized by interaction behaviors among participants? Theoretically, we addressed where the optimal level of provision and community size lie. Accordingly, possible managerial strategies are discussed and suggested.
