Abstract:A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for every vertex $v$ of $T$, there is a monochromatic path from $X$ to $v$. We give a short proof of this statement. We moreover show that the general Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture (which as a special case implies the stable marriage theorem) is valid for directed graphs with bounded stability number. This conjecture remains however open.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) , for a vertex set S⊆V , let N(S) denote the set of vertices in V that have a neighbor in S . Extending the concept of binding number of graphs by Woodall (1973), for a vertex set X⊆V , we define the binding number of X , denoted by bind(X) , as the maximum number b such that for every S⊆X where N(S)≠V(G) it holds that |N(S)|≥b|S| . Given this definition, we prove that if a graph V(G) contains a subset X with bind(X)=1/k where k is an integer, then G possesses a matching of size at least |X|/(k+1) . Using this statement, we derive tight bounds for the estimators of the matching size in planar graphs . These estimators are previously used in designing sublinear space algorithms for approximating the matching size in the data stream model of computation. In particular, we show that the number of locally superior vertices is a 3 factor approximation of the matching size in planar graphs. The previous analysis by Jowhari (2023) proved a 3.5 approximation factor. As another application, we show a simple variant of an estimator by Esfandiari et al. (2015) achieves 3 factor approximation of the matching size in planar graphs. Namely, let s be the number of edges with both endpoints having degree at most 2 and let h be the number of vertices with degree at least 3. We prove that when the graph is planar, the size of matching is at least (s+h)/3 . This result generalizes a known fact that every planar graph on n vertices with minimum degree 3 has a matching of size at least n/3 .

Abstract:It is shown that the number of pages required for a book embedding of a graph is the maximum of the numbers needed for any of the maximal nonseparable subgraphs and that a plane graph in which every triangle bounds a face has a two-page book embedding. The latter extends a theorem of H. Whitney and gives two-page book embeddings for $X$-trees and square grids.

Abstract:Abstract Isoradial embeddings of planar graphs play a crucial role in the study of several models of statistical mechanics, such as the Ising and dimer models. Kenyon and Schlenker give a combinatorial characterization of planar graphs admitting an isoradial embedding, and describe the space of such embeddings. In this paper we prove two results of the same type for generalizations of isoradial embeddings: isoradial immersions and minimal immersions . We show that a planar graph admits a flat isoradial immersion if and only if its train‐tracks do not form closed loops, and that a bipartite graph has a minimal immersion if and only if it is minimal. In both cases we describe the space of such immersions. The techniques used are different in both settings, and distinct from those of Kenyon and Schlenker. We also give an application of our results to the dimer model defined on bipartite graphs admitting minimal immersions.

Abstract:We introduce a geometric generalization of Hall's marriage theorem. For any family $F = \{X_1, \dots, X_m\}$ of finite sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we give conditions under which it is possible to choose a point $x_i\in X_i$ for every $1\leq i \leq m$ in such a way that the points $\{x_1,...,x_m\}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ are in general position. We give two proofs, one elementary proof requiring slightly stronger conditions, and one proof using topological techniques in the spirit of Aharoni and Haxell's celebrated generalization of Hall's theorem.

Abstract:We prove that every 2-sphere graph different from a prism can be vertex 4-colored in such a way that all Kempe chains are forests. This implies the following three tree theorem: the arboricity of a discrete 2-sphere is 3. Moreover, the three trees can be chosen so that each hits every triangle. A consequence is a result of an exercise in the book of Bondy and Murty based on work of A. Frank, A. Gyarfas and C. Nash-Williams: the arboricity of a planar graph is less or equal than 3.

Abstract:Minding's most celebrated result is his namesake theorem of 1839 which established that all surfaces having the same constant curvature must be locally isometric. Today, Minding's theorem is a staple in differential geometry textbooks. But, to the best of our knowledge, all published proofs of it, inclusive of Minding's original argument are existential in nature. In this note, we give a constructive proof of Minding's theorem in the flat case. The proof requires only some basic facts about harmonic functions and complex analytic functions.

Abstract:A graph is nearly embedded in a surface if it consists of graph $G_0$ that is embedded in the surface, together with a bounded number of vortices having no large transactions. It is shown that every large wall (or grid minor) in a nearly embedded graph, many rows of which intersect the embedded subgraph $G_0$ of the near-embedding, contains a large subwall that is planarly embedded within $G_0$. This result provides some hidden details needed for a strong version of the Robertson and Seymour's excluded minor theorem as presented in [K. Kawarabayashi, B. Mohar, Some recent progress and applications in graph minor theory, Graphs Combin. 23 (2007) 1-46].

Abstract:We announce results about flat (linkless) embeddings of graphs in 3-space. A piecewise-linear embedding of a graph in 3-space is called {\it flat} if every circuit of the graph bounds a disk disjoint from the rest of the graph. We have shown: (i) An embedding is flat if and only if the fundamental group of the complement in 3-space of the embedding of every subgraph is free. (ii) If two flat embeddings of the same graph are not ambient isotopic, then they differ on a subdivision of $K_5$ or $K_{3,3}$. (iii) Any flat embedding of a graph can be transformed to any other flat embedding of the same graph by ``3-switches'', an analog of 2-switches from the theory of planar embeddings. In particular, any two flat embeddings of a 4-connected graph are either ambient isotopic, or one is ambient isotopic to a mirror image of the other. (iv) A graph has a flat embedding if and only if it has no minor isomorphic to one of seven specified graphs. These are the graphs that can be obtained from $K_6$ by means of $Y\Delta$- and $\Delta Y$-exchanges.

Abstract:We consider graph drawing algorithms for learning spaces, a type of st-oriented partial cube derived from antimatroids and used to model states of knowledge of students. We show how to draw any st-planar learning space so all internal faces are convex quadrilaterals with the bottom side horizontal and the left side vertical, with one minimal and one maximal vertex. Conversely, every such drawing represents an st-planar learning space. We also describe connections between these graphs and arrangements of translates of a quadrant.

Abstract:An updated proof of a 1933 theorem of Goeritz, exhibiting a finite set of generators for the group of automorphisms of the 3-sphere that preserve a genus two Heegaard splitting. The group is analyzed via its action on a certain connected 2-complex. (The analogous problem for higher genus Heegaard splittings appears to remain unresolved.)

Abstract:Thurston's earthquake theorem asserts that every orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the circle admits an extension to the hyperbolic plane which is a (left or right) earthquake. The purpose of these notes is to provide a proof of Thurston's earthquake theorem, using the bi-invariant geometry of the Lie group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, which is also called Anti-de Sitter three-space. The involved techniques are elementary, and no background knowledge is assumed apart from some two-dimensional hyperbolic geometry.

Abstract:We give a direct proof of a result of Sundaram and Stanley: that the dimension of the space of invariant vectors in a $2k$-fold tensor product of the vector representation of $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ equals the number of $(n+1)$-avoiding matchings of $2k$ points. This can be viewed as an extension of Schensted's theorem on longest decreasing subsequences. Our main tool is an extension of Viennot's geometric construction to the setting of up-down tableaux.

Abstract:The Sylvester-Gallai Theorem, stated as a problem by J. J. Sylvester in 1893, asserts that for any finite, noncollinear set of points on a plane, there exists a line passing through exactly two points of the set. First, it is shown that for the real plane, the theorem is constructively invalid. Then, a well-known classical proof is examined from a constructive standpoint, locating the nonconstructivities. Finally, a constructive version of the theorem is established for the plane; this reveals the hidden constructive content of the classical theorem. The constructive methods used are those proposed by Errett Bishop.
