Abstract:In this paper we prove that free solvable groups have finite Krull dimension. In fact, this is true for much wider class of solvable groups, termed rigid groups. Along the way we study the algebraic structure of the limit solvable groups (fully residually free solvable groups).

Abstract:In this article, we establish results concerning the cohomology of Zariski dense subgroups of solvable linear algebraic groups. We show that for an irreducible solvable $\mathbb{Q}$-defined linear algebraic group $\mathbf{G}$, there exists an isomorphism between the cohomology rings with coefficients in a finite dimensional rational $\mathbf{G}$-module $M$ of the associated $\mathbb{Q}$-defined Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g_\mathbb{Q}}$ and Zariski dense subgroups $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ that satisfy the condition that they intersect the $\mathbb{Q}$-split maximal torus discretely. We further prove that the restriction map in rational cohomology from $\mathbf{G}$ to a Zariski dense subgroup $\Gamma \leq \mathbf{G}(\mathbb{Q})$ with coefficients in $M$ is an injection. We then derive several results regarding finitely generated solvable groups of finite abelian rank and their representations on cohomology.

Abstract:We prove that every small profinite group can be decomposed into a direct product of indecomposable profinite groups, and that such a decomposition is unique up to order and isomorphisms of the components. We also investigate the cancellation property of some free pro-$\mathcal{C}$ groups, and give a new criterion for a profinite group to be small.

Abstract:We show that the nuclear dimension of a (twisted) group C*-algebra of a virtually polycyclic group is finite. This prompts us to make a conjecture relating finite nuclear dimension of group C*-algebras and finite Hirsch length, which we then verify for a class of elementary amenable groups beyond the virtually polycyclic case. In particular, we give the first examples of finitely generated, non-residually finite groups with finite nuclear dimension. A parallel conjecture on finite decomposition rank is also formulated and an analogous result is obtained. Our method relies heavily on recent work of Hirshberg and the second named author on actions of virtually nilpotent groups on $C_0(X)$-algebras.

Abstract:We exhibit infinitely many natural numbers $n$ for which there exists at least one insolvable group of order $n$, and yet the holomorph of any solvable group of order $n$ has no insolvable regular subgroup. We also solve Problem 19.90 (d) in the Kourovka notebook.

Abstract:We consider the relation between geometrically finite groups and their limit sets in infinite-dimensional hyperbolic space. Specifically, we show that a rigidity theorem of Susskind and Swarup (Am J Math 114(2):233–250, 1992) generalizes to infinite dimensions, while a stronger rigidity theorem of Yang and Jiang (Bull Aust Math Soc 82(1):1–9, 2010) does not.

Abstract:It is shown by means of a generalization of a result of R. Baer and D. H. McLain that if G is a locally polycyclic group and if the chief factors of every finitely generated subgroup of G have finite rank at most equal to r, then every maximal subgroup of G has index dividing the r th power of some prime. This answers a question about locally supersoluble groups raised by the first author. In addition, examples are furnished to show that neither of the properties "all chief factors are finite" and "all maximal subgroups have finite index" implies the other.

Finite abelian groups acting on rationally connected threefolds I: Groups of product type

Abstract:We initiate the study of finite abelian groups that faithfully act on three-dimensional rationally connected varieties. We show that these groups can be naturally divided into three types. The first type consists of finite abelian groups that are products of two groups that belong to the Cremona group of rank 1 and 2, respectively; the second type consists of cyclic extensions of finite abelian groups acting on a K3 surface; the third type consists of groups that act on terminal Fano threefolds with empty anti-canonical linear system. We also establish a boundedness result for the groups of the second type.

A universal deformation ring with unexpected Krull dimension

Abstract:A well known result of B. Mazur gives a lower bound for the Krull dimension of the universal deformation ring associated to an absolutely irreducible residual representation in terms of the group cohomology of the adjoint representation. The question about equality - at least in the Galois case - also goes back to B. Mazur. In the general case the question about equality is the subject of Gouvêa's "Dimension conjecture". In this note we provide a counterexample to this conjecture. More precisely, we construct an absolutely irreducible residual representation with smooth universal deformation ring of strict greater Krull dimension as expected.

Virtual homology of limit groups and profinite rigidity of direct products

Abstract:We show that the virtual second Betti number of a finitely generated, residually free group $G$ is finite if and only if $G$ is either free, free abelian or the fundamental group of a closed surface. We also prove a similar statement in higher dimensions. We then develop techniques involving rank gradients of pro-$p$ groups, which allow us to recognise direct product decompositions. Combining these ideas, we show that direct products of free and surface groups are profinitely rigid among finitely presented, residually free groups, partially resolving a conjecture of Bridson's. Other corollaries that we obtain include a confirmation of Mel'nikov's surface group conjecture in the residually free case, and a description of closed aspherical manifolds of dimension at least $5$ with a residually free fundamental group.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Abstract:Consider a nonsolvable finite group G, where R(G) represents the solvable radical of G. For any element x in G, the solvabilizer of x in G, denoted by Sol_G(x), is defined as the set of all elements y in G such that the subgroup generated by x and y is solvable. Notably, the entirety of G can be expressed as the union over all x in G\R(G) of their respective solvabilizers: $G = \cup_{x\in G\R(G)} Sol_G(x). A solvabilizer covering of G is characterized by a subset X of G\R(G) such that G= \cup_{x\in X} Sol_G(x). The solvabilizer number of G is then defined as the minimum cardinality among all solvabilizer coverings of G. This paper delves into the exploration of the solvabilizer number for diverse nonsolvable finite groups G, shedding light on the interplay between solvability and the structure of these groups.

On the cohomological dimension of kernels of maps to $\mathbb Z$

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finitely generated RFRS group of cohomological dimension $2$, then $G$ is virtually free-by-cyclic if and only if $b_2^{(2)}(G) = 0$. This answers a question of Wise and generalises and gives a new proof of a recent theorem of Kielak and Linton, where the same result is obtained under the additional hypotheses that $G$ is virtually compact special and hyperbolic. More generally, we show that if $G$ is a RFRS group of cohomological dimension $n$ and of type $\mathrm{FP}_{n-1}$, then $G$ admits a virtual map to $\mathbb Z$ with kernel of rational cohomological dimension $n-1$ if and only if $b_n^{(2)}(G) = 0$.

Some torsion-free solvable groups with few subquotients

Abstract:We construct finitely generated torsion-free solvable groups $G$ that have infinite rank, but such that all finitely generated torsion-free metabelian subquotients of $G$ are virtually abelian. In particular all finitely generated metabelian subgroups of $G$ are virtually abelian. The existence of such groups shows that there is no "torsion-free version" of P. Kropholler's theorem, which characterises solvable groups of infinite rank via their metabelian subquotients.

Abstract:We show that a profinite group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are metabelian, is either virtually pro-$p$ or virtually soluble of derived length at most 4. We furthermore show that a prosoluble group, in which the centralisers of non-trivial elements are soluble of bounded derived length, is either soluble or virtually pro-$p$.

Abstract:We calculate the Krull–Gabriel dimension of the functor category of the (stable) category of maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules over complete Cohen-Macaulay local rings of countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type. We show that the Krull–Gabriel dimension is 0 if and only if the ring is of finite Cohen–Macaulay representation type and that is 2 if the ring is a hypersurface of countable but not finite Cohen–Macaulay representation type.

Abstract:Assume that a finite group G admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH with kernel F and complement H such that C_G(F)=1. In this paper, we investigate this situation and prove that if C_G(H) is supersoluble and C_G'(H) is nilpotent, then G is supersoluble. Also, we show that G is a Sylow tower group of a certain type if C_G(H) is a Sylow tower group of the same type.

Abstract:We prove that cyclic subgroup separability is preserved under exponential completion for groups that belong to a class that includes all coherent RAAGs and toral relatively hyperbolic groups; we do so by exploiting the structure of these completions as iterated free products with commuting subgroups. From this we deduce that the cyclic subgroups of limit groups over coherent RAAGs are separable, answering a question of Casals-Ruiz, Duncan and Kazachov. We also discuss relations between free products with commuting subgroups and the word problem, and recover the fact that limit groups over coherent RAAGs and toral relatively hyperbolic groups have a solvable word problem.
