Abstract:Cloning of statistics of general quantum measurement is discussed. The presented approach is connected with the known concept of observable cloning, but differs in some essential respects. The reasons are illustrated within some variety of the B92 protocol. As it is shown, there exist pairs of states such that the perfect cloning of given POVM is not possible. We discuss some properties of these intolerant sets. An example allowing the perfect cloning is presented as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a result precisely analogous to the traditional quantum no-cloning theorem holds in classical mechanics. This classical no-cloning theorem does not prohibit classical cloning, we argue, because it is based on a too-restrictive definition of cloning. Using a less popular, more inclusive definition of cloning, we give examples of classical cloning processes. We also prove that a cloning machine must be at least as complicated as the object it is supposed to clone.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of algorithmic mutual information and rarity of quantum states. These definitions enjoy conservation inequalities over unitary transformations and partial traces. We show that a large majority of pure states have minute self algorithmic information. We provide an algorithmic variant to the no-cloning theorem, by showing that only a small minority of quantum pure states can clone a non negligible amount of algorithmic information. We also provide a chain rule inequality for quantum algorithmic entropy. We show that rarity does not increase under POVM measurements.

Abstract:The famous no-cloning principle has been shown recently to enable a number of uncloneable functionalities. Here we address for the first time unkeyed quantum uncloneablity, via the study of a complexity-theoretic tool that enables a computation, but that is natively unkeyed: quantum advice. Remarkably, this is an application of the no-cloning principle in a context where the quantum states of interest are not chosen by a random process. We show the unconditional existence of promise problems admitting uncloneable quantum advice, and the existence of languages with uncloneable advice, assuming the feasibility of quantum copy-protecting certain functions. Along the way, we note that state complexity classes, introduced by Rosenthal and Yuen (ITCS 2022) - which concern the computational difficulty of synthesizing sequences of quantum states - can be naturally generalized to obtain state cloning complexity classes. We make initial observations on these classes, notably obtaining a result analogous to the existence of undecidable problems. Our proof technique establishes the existence of ingenerable sequences of finite bit strings - essentially meaning that they cannot be generated by any uniform circuit family. We then prove a generic result showing that the difficulty of accomplishing a computational task on uniformly random inputs implies its difficulty on any fixed, ingenerable sequence. We use this result to derandomize quantum cryptographic games that relate to cloning, and then incorporate a result of Kundu and Tan (arXiv 2022) to obtain uncloneable advice. Applying this two-step process to a monogamy-of-entanglement game yields a promise problem with uncloneable advice, and applying it to the quantum copy-protection of pseudorandom functions with super-logarithmic output lengths yields a language with uncloneable advice.

Abstract:The no-cloning principle has played a foundational role in quantum information and cryptography. Following a long-standing tradition of studying quantum mechanical phenomena through the lens of interactive games, Broadbent and Lord (TQC 2020) formalized cloning games in order to quantitatively capture no-cloning in the context of unclonable encryption schemes. The conceptual contribution of this paper is the new, natural, notion of Haar cloning games together with two applications. In the area of black-hole physics, our game reveals that, in an idealized model of a black hole which features Haar random (or pseudorandom) scrambling dynamics, the information from infalling entangled qubits can only be recovered from either the interior or the exterior of the black hole -- but never from both places at the same time. In the area of quantum cryptography, our game helps us construct succinct unclonable encryption schemes from the existence of pseudorandom unitaries, thereby, for the first time, bridging the gap between "MicroCrypt" and unclonable cryptography. The technical contribution of this work is a tight analysis of Haar cloning games which requires us to overcome many long-standing barriers in our understanding of cloning games. Answering these questions provably requires us to go beyond existing methods (Tomamichel, Fehr, Kaniewski and Wehner, New Journal of Physics 2013). In particular, we show a new technique for analyzing cloning games with respect to binary phase states through the lens of binary subtypes, and combine it with novel bounds on the operator norms of block-wise tensor products of matrices.

Abstract:While the no-cloning theorem, which forbids the perfect copying of quantum states, is well-known as one of the defining features of quantum mechanics, the question of how well the theory allows a state to be cloned is yet to be completely solved. In this paper, rigorous solutions to the problem of M to N asymmetric cloning of qudits are obtained in a number of interesting cases. The central result is the solution to the 1 to N universal asymmetric qudit cloning problem for which the exact trade-off in the fidelities of the clones for every N and d is derived. Analogous results are proven for qubits when M=N-1. We also consider state-dependent 1 to N qubit cloning, providing a general parametrization in terms of a Heisenberg star Hamiltonian. In all instances, we determine the feasibility of implementing the cloning economically, i.e., without an ancilla, and determine the dimension of the ancilla when an economic implementation is not possible.

Abstract:It is shown that any quantum operation that perfectly clones the entanglement of all maximally-entangled qubit pairs cannot preserve separability. This ``entanglement no-cloning'' principle naturally suggests that some approximate cloning of entanglement is nevertheless allowed by quantum mechanics. We investigate a separability-preserving optimal cloning machine that duplicates all maximally-entangled states of two qubits, resulting in 0.285 bits of entanglement per clone, while a local cloning machine only yields 0.060 bits of entanglement per clone.

Towards Unconditional Uncloneable Encryption

Abstract:Uncloneable encryption is a cryptographic primitive which encrypts a classical message into a quantum ciphertext, such that two quantum adversaries are limited in their capacity of being able to simultaneously decrypt, given the key and quantum side-information produced from the ciphertext. Since its initial proposal and scheme in the random oracle model by Broadbent and Lord [TQC 2020], uncloneable encryption has developed into an important primitive at the foundation of quantum uncloneability for cryptographic primitives. Despite sustained efforts, however, the question of unconditional uncloneable encryption (and in particular of the simplest case, called an uncloneable bit) has remained elusive. Here, we propose a candidate for the unconditional uncloneable bit problem, and provide strong evidence that the adversary's success probability in the related security game converges quadratically as ${1}/{2}+{1}/{(2\sqrt{K})}$, where $K$ represents the number of keys and ${1}/{2}$ is trivially achievable. We prove this bound's validity for $K$ ranging from $2$ to $7$ and demonstrate the validity up to $K = 17$ using computations based on the NPA hierarchy. We furthemore provide compelling heuristic evidence towards the general case. In addition, we prove an asymptotic upper bound of ${5}/{8}$ and give a numerical upper bound of $\sim 0.5980$, which to our knowledge is the best-known value in the unconditional model.

Abstract:The No Cloning theorem in quantum cryptography prevents any eavesdropper from exactly duplicating an arbitrary quantum superposition state of a single photon. Here we argue that an experimental scheme to produce an interacting, two component Bose-Einstein condensates can, in principle, generate macroscopically large number of bosonic clones of any arbitrary single photon wave packet with high fidelity at large N limit of thermodynamic equilibrium using excitons or electron hole pairs. It is possible, because initially one can isolate the two orthogonal polarizations using polarizing beam splitters and then amplify the corresponding single photon wave packets identically but separately. This is to ensure that the amplified beams can be used to generate proportionately same, yet large numbers of bosons to produce two distinct but interacting condensates using additional light matter interactions within a semiconductor structure. One can then extract the cloned photons once the identical excitons in the two-component quantum ground state of the condensate radiatively recombine. Thus the overall cloning process can operationally bypass the restrictions imposed by the above mentioned theorem. This is because the quantum statistical nature of this proposed cloning operation does not require any strict unitary evolution of standard quantum mechanics within a single Hilbert space.

Abstract:The celebrated quantum no-cloning theorem establishes the impossibility of making a perfect copy of an unknown quantum state. The discovery of this important theorem for the field of quantum information is currently dated 1982. I show here that an article published in 1970 [J. L. Park, Foundations of Physics, 1, 23-33 (1970)] contained an explicit mathematical proof of the impossibility of cloning quantum states. I analyze Park's demonstration in the light of published explanations concerning the genesis of the better-known papers on no-cloning.

Phase spaces that cannot be cloned in classical mechanics

Abstract:The quantum no cloning theorem is an essential result in quantum information theory. Following this idea, we give a physically natural definition of cloning in the context of classical mechanics using symplectic geometry, building on work of Fenyes. We observe, following Fenyes, any system with phase space $(\mathbb{R}^{2N}, dx_i\wedge dy_i)$ can be cloned in our definition. However, we show that if $(M,\omega)$ can be cloned in our definition, then $M$ must be contractible. For instance, this shows the simple pendulum cannot be cloned in Hamiltonian mechanics. We further formulate a robust notion of approximate cloning, and show that if $(M, \omega)$ can be approximately cloned, then $M$ is contractible. We give interpretations of our results and in some special cases reconcile our no cloning theorems with the general experience that classical information is clonable. Finally we point to new directions of research, including a connection of our result with the classical measurement problem.

Towards Unclonable Cryptography in the Plain Model

Abstract:By leveraging the no-cloning principle of quantum mechanics, unclonable cryptography enables us to achieve novel cryptographic protocols that are otherwise impossible classically. Two most notable examples of unclonable cryptography are copy-protection (CP) and unclonable encryption (UE). Most known constructions rely on the QROM (as opposed to the plain model). Despite receiving a lot of attention in recent years, two important open questions still remain: CP for point functions in the plain model, which is usually considered as feasibility demonstration, and UE with unclonable indistinguishability security in the plain model. A core ingredient of these protocols is the so-called monogamy-of-entanglement (MoE) property. Such games allow quantifying the correlations between the outcomes of multiple non-communicating parties sharing entanglement in a particular context. Specifically, we define the games between a challenger and three players in which the first player is asked to split and share a quantum state between the two others, who are then simultaneously asked a question and need to output the correct answer.

Abstract:Quantum no-cloning theorem gives rise to the intriguing possibility of quantum copy protection where we encode a program in a quantum state such that a user in possession of k such states cannot create k + 1 working copies. Introduced by Aaronson (CCC 09) over a decade ago, copy protection has proven to be notoriously hard to achieve. In this work, we construct public-key encryption and functional encryption schemes whose secret keys are copy-protected against unbounded collusions in the plain model (i.e. without any idealized oracles), assuming (post-quantum) subexponentially secure iO, one-way functions and LWE. This resolves a long-standing open question of constructing fully collusion-resistant copy-protected functionalities raised by multiple previous works. Prior to our work, copy-protected functionalities were known only in restricted collusion models where either an a-priori bound on the collusion size was needed, in the plain model with the same assumptions as ours (Liu, Liu, Qian, Zhandry [TCC 22]), or adversary was only prevented from doubling their number of working programs, in a structured quantum oracle model (Aaronson [CCC 09]). We obtain our results through a novel technique which uses identity-based encryption to construct unbounded collusion resistant copy-protection schemes from 1-to-2 secure schemes. This is analogous to the technique of using digital signatures to construct full-fledged quantum money from single banknote schemes1 (Lutomirski et al. [ICS 09], Farhi et al. [ITCS 12], Aaronson and Christiano [STOC 12]). We believe our technique is of independent interest. Along the way, we also construct a puncturable functional encryption scheme whose master secret key can be punctured at all functions f such that f (m0) != f (m1). This might also be of independent interest.

Abstract:Unclonable encryption, introduced by Broadbent and Lord (TQC'20), is an encryption scheme with the following attractive feature: given a ciphertext, an adversary cannot create two ciphertexts both of which decrypt to the same message as the original ciphertext. We revisit this notion and show the following: - Reusability: The constructions proposed by Broadbent and Lord have the disadvantage that they either guarantee one-time security (that is, the encryption key can only be used once to encrypt the message) in the plain model or they guaranteed security in the random oracle model. We construct unclonable encryption schemes with semantic security. We present two constructions (for public-key and private-key settings) from minimal cryptographic assumptions. - Lower Bound and Generalized Construction: We revisit the information-theoretic one-time secure construction of Broadbent and Lord. The success probability of the adversary in their construction was guaranteed to be $0.85^n$, where $n$ is the length of the message. It was interesting to understand whether the ideal success probability of (negligibly close to) $0.5^n$ was unattainable. We generalize their construction to be based on a broader class of monogamy of entanglement games. We demonstrate a simple cloning attack that succeeds with probability $0.71^n$ against a class of schemes including that of Broadbent and Lord. We also present a $0.75^n$ cloning attack exclusively against their scheme. - Implication to Copy-Protection: We show that unclonable encryption, satisfying a stronger property, called unclonable-indistinguishability (defined by Broadbent and Lord), implies copy-protection for a simple class of unlearnable functions. While we currently don't have encryption schemes satisfying this stronger property, this implication demonstrates a new path to construct copy-protection.

A Computational Separation Between Quantum No-cloning and No-telegraphing

Abstract:Two of the fundamental no-go theorems of quantum information are the no-cloning theorem (that it is impossible to make copies of general quantum states) and the no-teleportation theorem (the prohibition on telegraphing, or sending quantum states over classical channels without pre-shared entanglement). They are known to be equivalent, in the sense that a collection of quantum states is telegraphable if and only if it is clonable. Our main result suggests that this is not the case when computational efficiency is considered. We give a collection of quantum states and quantum oracles relative to which these states are efficiently clonable but not efficiently telegraphable. Given that the opposite scenario is impossible (states that can be telegraphed can always trivially be cloned), this gives the most complete quantum oracle separation possible between these two important no-go properties. We additionally study the complexity class clonableQMA, a subset of QMA whose witnesses are efficiently clonable. As a consequence of our main result, we give a quantum oracle separation between clonableQMA and the class QCMA, whose witnesses are restricted to classical strings. We also propose a candidate oracle-free promise problem separating these classes. We finally demonstrate an application of clonable-but-not-telegraphable states to cryptography, by showing how such states can be used to protect against key exfiltration.

Are uncloneable proof and advice states strictly necessary?

Abstract:Yes, we show that they are. We initiate the study of languages that necessarily need uncloneable quantum proofs and advice. We define strictly uncloneable versions of the classes QMA, BQP/qpoly and FEQP/qpoly (which is the class of relational problems solvable exactly with polynomial-sized quantum advice). Strictly uncloneable QMA is defined to be the class of languages in QMA that only have uncloneable proofs, i.e., given any family of candidate proof states, a polynomial-time cloning algorithm cannot act on it to produce states that are jointly usable by $k$ separate polynomial-time verifiers, for arbitrary polynomial $k$. This is a stronger notion of uncloneable proofs and advice than those considered in previous works, which only required the existence of a single family of proof or advice states that are uncloneable. We show that in the quantum oracle model, there exist languages in strictly uncloneable QMA and strictly uncloneable BQP/qpoly. The language in strictly uncloneable QMA also gives a quantum oracle separation between QMA and the class cloneableQMA introduced by Nehoran and Zhandry (2024). We also show without using any oracles that the language, used by Aaronson, Buhrman and Kretschmer (2024) to separate FEQP/qpoly and FBQP/poly, is in strictly uncloneable FEQP/qpoly.

Abstract:This is a revision of my original posting, in which I raised objections to part of the Conway-Kochen argument. I now agree with them that their recent reply answers my original concerns. In the first part of these notes (identical to the original), I give a reformulation of the part of the Conway-Kochen result that closes the contextuality loophole in the original Kochen-Specker (KS) theorem. In the second part (modified in this revision) I review my concerns connected with the finite time needed to make a measurement, and briefly indicate how Conway and Kochen have reponded to them.

Abstract:Incompatibility is a feature of quantum theory that sets it apart from classical theory, and the inability to clone an unknown quantum state is one of the most fundamental instances. The no-hiding theorem is another such instance that arises in the context of the black-hole information paradox, and can be viewed as being dual to no-cloning. Here, we formulate both of these fundamental features of quantum theory in a single form that is amenable to efficient verification, and that is robust to errors arising in state preparation and measurements. We extend the notion of unitarity - an average figure of merit that for quantum theory captures the coherence of a quantum channel - to general physical theories. Then, we introduce the notion of compatible unitarity pair (CUP) sets, that correspond to the allowed values of unitarities for compatible channels in the theory. We show that a CUP-set constitutes a simple 'fingerprint' of a physical theory, and that incompatibility can be studied through them. We derive information-disturbance constraints on quantum CUP-sets that encode both the no-cloning/broadcasting and no-hiding theorems of quantum theory. We then develop randomised benchmarking protocols that efficiently estimate quantum CUP-sets and provide simulations using IBMQ of the simplest instance. Finally, we discuss ways in which CUP-sets and quantum no-go theorems could provide additional information to benchmark quantum devices.

Cloning and Cryptography with Quantum Continuous Variables

Abstract:The cloning of quantum variables with continuous spectra is investigated. We define a Gaussian 1-to-2 cloning machine, which copies equally well two conjugate variables such as position and momentum or the two quadrature components of a light mode. The resulting cloning fidelity for coherent states, namely $F=2/3$, is shown to be optimal. An asymmetric version of this Gaussian cloner is then used to assess the security of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution scheme that allows two remote parties to share a Gaussian key. The information versus disturbance tradeoff underlying this continuous quantum cryptographic scheme is then analyzed for the optimal individual attack. Methods to convert the resulting Gaussian keys into secret key bits are also studied. The extension of the Gaussian cloner to optimal $N$-to-$M$ continuous cloners is then discussed, and it is shown how to implement these cloners for light modes, using a phase-insensitive optical amplifier and beam splitters. Finally, a phase-conjugated inputs $(N,N')$-to-$(M,M')$ continuous cloner is defined, yielding $M$ clones and $M'$ anticlones from $N$ replicas of a coherent state and $N'$ replicas of its phase-conjugate (with $M'-M=N'-N$). This novel kind of cloners is shown to outperform the standard $N$-to-$M$ cloners in some situations.

Uncloneable Cryptographic Primitives with Interaction

Abstract:Much of the strength of quantum cryptography may be attributed to the no-cloning property of quantum information. We construct three new cryptographic primitives whose security is based on uncloneability, and that have in common that their security can be established via a novel monogamy-of-entanglement (MoE) property: - We define interactive uncloneable encryption, a version of the uncloneable encryption defined by Broadbent and Lord [TQC 2020] where the receiver must partake in an interaction with the sender in order to decrypt the ciphertext. We provide a one-round construction that is secure in the information-theoretic setting, in the sense that no other receiver may learn the message even if she eavesdrops on all the interactions. - We provide a way to make a bit string commitment scheme uncloneable. The scheme is augmented with a check step chronologically in between the commit and open steps, where an honest sender verifies that the commitment may not be opened by an eavesdropper, even if the receiver is malicious. - We construct a receiver-independent quantum key distribution (QKD) scheme, which strengthens the notion of one-sided device independent QKD of Tomamichel, Fehr, Kaniewski, and Wehner (TFKW) [NJP 2013] by also permitting the receiver's classical device to be untrusted. Explicitly, the sender remains fully trusted while only the receiver's communication is trusted. To show security, we prove an extension of the MoE property of coset states introduced by Coladangelo, Liu, Liu, and Zhandry [Crypto 2021]. In our stronger version, the player Charlie also receives Bob's answer prior to making his guess, simulating a party who eavesdrops on an interaction. To use this property, we express it as a new type of entropic uncertainty relation which arises naturally from the structure of the underlying MoE game.
