Abstract:Here, cosmology is obtained from the variable gravitational constant $ G \propto \phi^{-2}$ with $ \phi(x) $ being a scalar and its fluctuations around the ground state. The gravitational action contains Einstein-Hilbert like term with variable $ G $, kinetic energy and self-interaction potential for $ \phi(x) $. Two phase transitions take place in this model. The first one takes place at the GUT (grand unified theory) scale $ \sim 2.45 \times 10^{14}{\rm GeV} $, when the early universe exits the inflationay phase and the second one at the electro-weak scale. Spontaneous symmetry breaking takes place around this scale As a consequence, variable $ G $ acquires constant value $G_N$ (the Newtonian gravitational constant). The standard model of cosmology is obtained in the post-second phase transition era. Interestingly, the dark matter and quintessence dark energy are created from the gravitational sector as a combined effect of the linear term of scalar curvature and $ \phi(x) $ without using non-linear terms of curvature or any other matter fields. It is interesting to find that fluctuations in $ \phi(x) $ cause the phantom dark energy after the second phase transition, which grows later in the expanding universe. It is also found that the phantom era is free from big-rip singularity.
General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is the problem of the late - time accelerated expansion in cosmology and how this phenomenon is related to the inflationary phase of the early universe. Specifically, the author constructs a cosmological model by introducing a time - varying gravitational constant \(G\), and this model can explain the entire evolutionary process from the inflation of the early universe to the accelerated expansion of the late - time universe. The key points of the paper include: 1. **Variable gravitational constant \(G\)**: The author assumes that the gravitational constant \(G\) is a function of a scalar field \(\phi\), that is, \(G\propto\phi^{- 2}\). This assumption allows \(G\) to have different values in different cosmic epochs, thus affecting the dynamic behavior of the universe. 2. **Two phase transitions**: - **The first phase transition**: It occurs at the grand unified theory (GUT) scale of \(2.45\times 10^{14}\) GeV, when the early universe exits the inflationary phase. - **The second phase transition**: It occurs at the electro - weak scale, when the gravitational constant \(G\) obtains a constant value \(G_N\) (Newton's gravitational constant) and the standard cosmological model is restored. 3. **Production of dark matter and dark energy**: The paper proposes that dark matter and dark energy are generated from the gravitational part, without the need to introduce non - linear curvature terms or other matter fields. In particular, after the radiation - dominated era, dark energy appears in the form of phantom dark energy and eventually drives the accelerated expansion of the late - time universe. 4. **Cosmic dynamics**: By analyzing the Friedmann equations, the author shows the evolution of the universe at different stages, including the inflationary period, the radiation - dominated period, the matter - dominated period and the dark energy - dominated period. In particular, the paper discusses in detail the expansion rate and dynamic characteristics of the universe at each stage. 5. **Consistency with observational results**: The results of the paper are consistent with observational data, especially that dark matter begins to dominate the universe at redshift \(z = 1091.89\), and phantom dark energy begins to dominate the universe dynamics at redshift \(z=0.46\), causing the universe to accelerate its expansion. In conclusion, this paper constructs a complete cosmological model that can explain the inflation of the early universe to the accelerated expansion of the late - time universe by introducing a time - varying gravitational constant \(G\), while also solving some of the unsolved mysteries in the standard cosmological model.
