Abstract:Quasiconformal homeomorphisms of the unit ball $B^n$ of ${\mathbb R}^n, n \ge 3,$ onto itself with identity boundary values are studied. A spatial analogue of Teichmüller's theorem is proved.

Abstract:Certain classical results on cluster sets and boundary cluster sets of analytic functions, due to Iversen, Lindelöf, Noshiro, Tsuji, Ohtsuka, Pommerenke, Carmona, Cufi and others, are extended to n-dimensional quasiconformal mappings. Unlike what is usually the case in the context of analytic functions, our considerations are not restricted to mappings of a disk or ball only. It is shown, for instance, that quasiconformal cluster sets and boundary cluster sets, taken at a non-isolated boundary point of an arbitrary domain, coincide. More refined versions are established in the special case where the domain is the open unit ball. These include cluster set considerations of the induced radial boundary extension and results where certain exceptional sets on the boundary are allowed for.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a class of vanishing Carleson measures with conformal invariance and corresponding strongly vanishing symmetric homeomorphisms on the real line and prove that they can be mutually generated under quasiconformal mappings. This is motivated by constructing a nice VMO-Teichmuller space on the real line, which completely removes the obstacle of the usual VMO-Teichmuller space that lacks conformal invariance and is repeatedly encountered in the papers [17,22-24].

Abstract:In this paper we study quasiconformal curves which are a special case of quasiregular curves. Namely embeddings $\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ from some domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$, where $n\leq m$, which belong in a suitable Sobolev class and satisfy a certain distortion inequality for some smooth, closed and non-vanishing $n$-form in $\mathbb{R}^m$. These mappings can be seen as quasiconformal mappings between $\Omega$ and $f(\Omega)$. We prove that a quasiconformal curve always satisfies the analytic definition of quasiconformal mappings and the lower half of the modulus inequality. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for a quasiconformal curve to satisfy the metric definition of quasiconformal mappings. We also show that a quasiconformal map from $\Omega$ to $f(\Omega)\subset \mathbb{R}^m$ is a quasiconformal $\omega$ curve for some form $\omega$ under suitable assumptions. Finally, we show the same is true when we equip the target space $f(\Omega)$ with its intrinsic metric instead of the Euclidean one.

Abstract:Suppose that f:D→D′ is a quasiconformal mapping, where D and D′ are domains in Rn, and that D is a broad domain. We show that for every arcwise connected subset A in D, the weak quasisymmetry of the restriction f|A: A→f(A) implies its quasisymmetry. As a consequence, we see that the answer to one of the open problems raised by Heinonen from 1989 is affirmative, under the additional condition that A is arcwise connected.

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between an open simply-connected region Omega subset of S-2 and the boundary Y of the hyperbolic convex hull in H-3 of S-2 \ Omega. A counterexample is given to Thurston's conjecture that these spaces are related by a 2-quasiconformal homeomorphism which extends to the identity map on their common boundary, in the case when the homeomorphism is required to respect any group of Mobius transformations which preserves Q. We show that the best possible universal lipschitz constant for the nearest point retraction r : Omega --> Y is 2. We find explicit universal constants 0 < c(2) < c(1), such that no pleating map which bends more than cl in some interval of unit length is an embedding, and such that any pleating map which bends less than c(2) in each interval of unit length is embedded. We show that every K-quasiconformal homeomorphism D-2 --> D-2 is a (K, a(K))-quasi-isometry, where a(K) is an explicitly computed function. The multiplicative constant is best possible and the additive constant a(K) is best possible for some values of K.

Abstract:Given a quasiconformal mapping $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ with $n\ge2$, we show that (un-)boundedness of the composition operator ${\bf C}_f$ on the spaces $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ depends on the index $\alpha$ and the degeneracy set of the Jacobian $J_f$. We establish sharp results in terms of the index $\alpha$ and the local/global self-similar Minkowski dimension of the degeneracy set of $J_f$. This gives a solution to [Problem 8.4, 3] and also reveals a completely new phenomenon, which is totally different from the known results for Sobolev, BMO, Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces. Consequently, Tukia-Väisälä's quasiconformal extension $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ of an arbitrary quasisymmetric mapping $g:\mathbb R^{n-p}\to \mathbb R^{n-p}$ is shown to preserve $Q_{\alpha} (\mathbb R^n)$ for any $(\alpha,p)\in (0,1)\times[2,n)\cup(0,1/2)\times\{1\}$. Moreover, $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ is shown to be invariant under inversions for all $0<\alpha<1$.

Abstract:We establish that every $K$-quasiconformal mapping $w$ of the unit ball $\IB$ onto a $C^2$-Jordan domain $\Omega$ is Hölder continuous with constant $\alpha= 2-\frac{n}{p}$, provided that its weak Laplacean $\Delta w$ is in $ L^p(\IB)$ for some $n/2<p<n$. In particular it is Hölder continuous for every $0<\alpha<1$ provided that $\Delta w\in L^n(\IB)$.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of mappings that satisfy the so-called inverse Poletsky inequality. We consider mappings of quasiextremal distance domains, domains with a locally quasiconformal boundary, and domains which are regular in the sense of prime ends onto domains with a locally quasiconformal boundary, regular domains, or domains which are locally Hölder equivalent to a half-ball on its boundary. For such mappings, we have obtained the Hölder logarithmic continuity in some neighborhood of its boundary points.

Abstract:The notion of non-decreasable dilatation for quasiconformal mappings, which was introduced by Edgar Reich, plays an important role in the theory of extremal quasiconformal mappings. It is an interesting open problem so far whether an extremal quasiconformal mapping with non-decreasable dilatation exists in every Teichmüller equivalence class. In this paper, we have partially solved this problem. It is proved that for every Teichmüller equivalence class [f], there exists an extremal quasiconformal mapping g in [f] with weakly non-decreasable dilatation.

Assuming some familiarity with Riemann surfaces and hyperbolic geometry, topics covered include the Grötzch argument, analytical properties of quasiconformal maps, the Beltrami differential equation, holomorphic motions and Teichmüller spaces. Abstract:The origin of quasiconformal mappings, like that of conformal mappings, can be traced back to old cartography where the basic problem was the search for mappings from the sphere onto the plane with minimal deviation from conformality, subject to certain conditions which were made precise. In this paper, we survey the development of cartography, highlighting the main ideas that are related to quasiconformality. Some of these ideas were completely ignored in the previous historical surveys on quasiconformal mappings. We then survey early quasiconformal theory in the works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller, which are the 20th-century founders of the theory. The period we consider starts with Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100--170 A.D.) and ends with Oswald Teichmüller (1913--1943). We mention the works of several mathematicians-geographers done in this period, including Euler, Lagrange, Lambert, Gauss, Chebyshev, Darboux and others. We highlight in particular the work of Nicolas-Auguste Tissot (1824--1897), a French mathematician and geographer who (according to our knowledge) was the first to introduce the notion of a mapping which transforms infinitesimal circles into infinitesimal ellipses, studying parameters such as the ratio of the major to the minor axes of such an infinitesimal ellipse, its area divided by the area of the infinitesimal circle of which it is the image, and the inclination of its axis with respect to a fixed axis in the plane. We also give some information about the lives and works of Grötzsch, Lavrentieff, Ahlfors and Teichmüller. The latter brought the theory of quasiconformal mappings to a high level of development. He used it in an essential way in his investigations of Riemann surfaces and their moduli and in function theory (in particular, in his work on the Bieberbach conjecture and the type problem). We survey in detail several of his results. We also discuss some aspects of his life and writings, explaining why his papers were not read and why some of his ideas are still unknown even to Teichmüller theorists. The final version of this paper will appear in the book "Uniformization, Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence, Calabi-Yau Manifolds, and Picard-Fuchs Equations" (ed. L. Ji and S.-T. Abstract:The classes of -smooth domains bounded by a contour that is Lyapunov outside any neighborhood of its certain point such that the derivative of a conformal mapping onto the unit disk is continuous at this point are described. The description is given in terms of some spaces for a unit tangent vector on the boundary contour. Corresponding results for piecewise smooth domains are obtained as a consequence.

Abstract:We show that quasiconformal mappings on strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces satisfy a system of Beltrami equations. In particular, the 1-quasiconformal mappings on these surfaces are CR or anti-CR mappings. Furthermore, if these surfaces are also real-analytic and nonspherical, then 1-quasiconformal mappings on them, which fix a point, can be linearized.

Abstract:We establish nine equivalent conditions for a bounded domain which is quasiconformally equivalent to a bounded uniform domain with a connected boundary to be a John domain. These conditions connect the John property of the domain with other geometric properties, and with the quasisymmetry of quasiconformal mappings onto it. Our result is a generalization of the main result of Heinonen (Rev. Math. Iber. 5: 97–123, 1989), where a similar question was studied in the special case of the unit ball.

Abstract:The global homeomorphism theorem for quasiconformal maps describes the following specifically higher-dimensional phenomenon: {\em Locally invertible quasiconformal mapping $f: {\R}^{n} \to {\R}^{n}$ is globally invertible provided $n > 2$.} We prove the following operator version of the global homeomorphism theorem. {\em If the operator $ f: H \to H $ acting in the Hilbert space $ H $ is locally invertible and is an operator of bounded distortion, then it is globally invertible.}
