Abstract:We present a purely planar algebraic proof of the main result of a paper of Guionnet-Jones-Shlaykhtenko which constructs an extremal subfactor from a subfactor planar algebra whose standard invariant is given by that planar algebra.

Abstract:We prove the Schur product theorem for subfactor planar algebras. Based on it, several results about biprojections are obtained. We discuss a new approach to the complexity of subfactors. Then we classify three families of subfactor planar algebras, subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes with 4 dimensional 2-boxes and at most 23 dimensional 3-boxes; exchange relation planar algebras with 4 dimensional 2-boxes; subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes, such that the quotient of 3-boxes by the basic construction ideal is abelian. It extends the classification of singly generated planar algebras obtained by Bisch and Jones.

Abstract:In this paper, we explicitly work out the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset Q)}$ for an intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ of an irreducible subfactor $N \subset M$ of finite index. We do this in terms of the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset M)}$ by showing that if $T$ is any planar tangle, the associated operator $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ can be read off from $Z^{(N \subset M)}_T$ by a formula involving the so-called {\em biprojection} corresponding to the intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ and a scalar $\alpha(T)$ carefully chosen so as to ensure that the formula defining $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ is multiplicative with respect to composition of tangles. Also, the planar algebra of $Q \subset M$ can be obtained by applying these results to $M \subset M_1$. We also apply our result to the example of a semi-direct product subgroup-subfactor.

Abstract:For any abstract subfactor planar algebra $P$, there exists a finite index extremal subfactor $M_0 \subset M_1$ with $P$ as its standard invariant. In this paper, we classify the automorphism group of a bipartite graph planar algebra, and obtain subfactor planar subalgebras by taking fixed points under groups of automorphisms. This construction provides both new examples of subfactors and new descriptions of the planar algebras of previously known examples.

Abstract:Subfactors of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor with ''exotic'' properties can be constructed from nondegenerate commuting squares of multi-matrix algebras. We show that the subfactor planar algebra of these commuting square subfactors necessarily embeds into Jones' graph planar algebra associated to one of the inclusion graphs in the commuting square. This leads to a powerful obstruction for the standard invariant of the subfactor, and we use it to give an example of a hyperfinite subfactor with Temperley-Lieb-Jones standard invariant and index $\frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}$, i.e. the index of the Haagerup subfactor. We are led to a conjecture pertaining to Jones indices of irreducible, hyperfinite subfactors.

Abstract:We show a close relationship between non-degenerate smooth commuting squares of $II_1$-factors with all inclusions of finite index and inclusions of subfactor planar algebras by showing that each leads to a construction of the other. One direction of this uses the Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko construction.

Abstract:We give an identification between the planar algebra of the subgroup-subfactor $R \rtimes H \subset R \rtimes G$ and the $G$-invariant planar subalgebra of the planar algebra of the bipartite graph $\star_n$, where $n = [G : H]$. The crucial step in this identification is an exhibition of a model for the basic construction tower, and thereafter of the standard invariant, of $R \rtimes H \subset R \rtimes G$ in terms of operator matrices. We also obtain an identification between the planar algebra of the fixed algebra subfactor $R^G \subset R^H$ and the $G$-invariant planar subalgebra of the planar algebra of the `flip' of $\star_n $.

Skein Theory for Affine A Subfactor Planar Algebras

Abstract:The Kuperberg Program asks to find presentations of planar algebras and use these presentations to prove results about their corresponding categories purely diagrammatically. This program has been completed for index less than 4 and is ongoing research for index greater than 4. We give generators-and-relations presentations for the affine A subfactor planar algebras of index 4. Exclusively using the planar algebra language, we give new proofs to how many such planar algebras exist. Categories corresponding to these planar algebras are monoidally equivalent to cyclic pointed fusion categories. We give a proof of this by defining a functor yielding a monoidal equivalence between the two categories. The categories are also monoidally equivalent to a representation category of a cyclic subgroup of SU(2). We give a new proof of this fact, explicitly using the diagrammatic presentations found. This gives novel diagrammatics for these representation categories.

Abstract:The first two authors classified subfactor planar algebra generated by a non-trivial 2-box subject to the condition that the dimension of 3-boxes is at most 12 in Part I; 13 in Part II of this series. They are the group planar algebra for $\mathbb {Z}_3$, the Fuss-Catalan planar algebra, and the group/subgroup planar algebra for $\mathbb {Z}_2\subset \mathbb {Z}_5\rtimes \mathbb {Z}_2$. In the present paper, we extend the classification to 14 dimensional 3-boxes. They are all Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras. Precisely it contains a depth 3 one from quantum $O(3)$, and a one-parameter family from quantum $Sp(4)$.

Abstract:We define a canonical relative commutant planar algebra from a strongly Markov inclusion of finite von Neumann algebras. In the case of a connected unital inclusion of finite dimensional C*-algebras with the Markov trace, we show this planar algebra is isomorphic to the bipartite graph planar algebra of the Bratteli diagram of the inclusion. Finally, we show that a finite depth subfactor planar algebra is a planar subalgebra of the bipartite graph planar algebra of its principal graph.

Abstract:Given a planar algebra we show the equivalence of the notions of a module over this algebra (in the operadic sense), and module over a universal annular algebra. We classify such modules, with invariant inner products, in the generic region and give applications to subfactorss, including a planar construction of the $E_6$ and $E_8$ subfactors.

Abstract:To a planar algebra P in the sense of Jones we associate a natural non- commutative ring, which can be viewed as the ring of non-commutative polynomials in several indeterminates, invariant under a symmetry encoded by P. We show that this ring carries a natural structure of a non-commutative probability space. Non-commutative laws on this space turn out to describe random matrix ensembles possessing special sym- metries. As application, we give a canonical construction of a subfactor and its symmetric enveloping algebra associated to a given planar algebra P. This talk is based on joint work with A. Guionnet and V. Jones.

Abstract:We give a new type of Schur-Weyl duality for the representations of a family of quantum subgroups and their centralizer algebra. We define and classify singly-generated, Yang-Baxter relation planar algebras. We present the skein theoretic construction of a new parameterized planar algebra. We construct infinitely many new subfactors and unitary fusion categories, and compute their trace formula as a closed-form expression, in terms of Young diagrams.

Abstract:Bisch and Jones suggested the skein theoretic classification of planar algebras and investigated the ones generated by 2-boxes with the second author. In this paper, we consider 3-box generators and classify subfactor planar algebras generated by a non-trivial 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Thurston. The subfactor planar algebras in the classification are either $E^6$ or the ones from representations of quantum $SU(N)$. We introduce a new method to determine positivity of planar algebras and new techniques to reduce the complexity of computations.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to classify exchange relation planar algebras with 4 dimensional 2-boxes. Besides its skein theory, we emphasize the positivity of subfactor planar algebras based on the Schur product theorem. We will discuss the lattice of projections of 2-boxes, specifically the rank of the projections. From this point, several results about biprojections are obtained. The key break of the classification is to show the existence of a biprojection. By this method, we also classify another two families of subfactor planar algebras: subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes with 4 dimensional 2-boxes and at most 23 dimensional 3-boxes; subfactor planar algebras generated by 2-boxes, such that the quotient of 3-boxes by the basic construction ideal is abelian. Abstract:In this note, we discuss the notion of symmetric self-duality of shaded planar algebras, which allows us to lift shadings on subfactor planar algebras to obtain Z/2Z-graded unitary fusion categories. This finishes the proof that there are unitary fusion categories with fusion graphs 4442 and 3333.

Abstract:Bisch and Jones proposed the classification of planar algebras by simple generators and relations. They investigated with the second author the classification of planar algebras generated by 2-boxes. In this paper, we classify singly-generated Thurston-relation planar algebras, defined as subfactor planar algebras generated by a 3-box satisfying a relation proposed by Dylan Thurston. Our main result shows that such subfactor planar algebras are either the E-6 subfactor planar algebras or belong to a two-parameter family of planar algebras arising from the representations of type A quantum groups. We introduce a new method for determining positivity of the Markov trace of planar algebras in this family.

Abstract:We develop vertex and factorisation algebra analogues of the theory of quasitriangular bialgebras. Analogously to the classical theory, we prove their categories of representations are controlled by spectral R-matrices. In the vertex algebra case this generalises previous notions due to Etingof-Kazhdan and Frenkel-Reshetikhin. Finally we give examples, including Borcherds twists and homology vertex algebras.

Abstract:We construct a certain `cobordism category' ${\cal D}$ whose morphisms are suitably decorated cobordism classes between similarly decorated closed oriented 1-manifolds, and show that there is essentially a bijection between (1+1-dimensional) unitary topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) defined on ${\cal D}$, on the one hand, and Jones' subfactor planar algebras, on the other.
