Abstract:The decay of the $J=9^-$ isomeric state in $^{180}Ta$ is described in a model based on the phenomenon of chaos assisted tunneling. The model attempts to explain the enhanced decay of the isomeric state when irradiated by gamma-rays or subjected to Coulomb excitations.

Abstract:$^{180m}$Ta is a rare nuclear isomer whose decay has never been observed. Its remarkably long lifetime surpasses the half-lives of all other known $\beta$ and electron capture decays due to the large K-spin differences and small energy differences between the isomeric and lower energy states. Detecting its decay presents a significant experimental challenge but could shed light on neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis mechanisms, the nature of dark matter and K-spin violation. For this study, we repurposed the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR, an experimental search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{76}$Ge using an array of high-purity germanium detectors, to search for the decay of $^{180m}$Ta. More than 17 kilograms, the largest amount of tantalum metal ever used for such a search was installed within the ultra-low background detector array. In this paper we present results from the first year of Ta data taking and provide an updated limit for the $^{180m}$Ta half-life on the different decay channels. With new limits up to 1.5 x $10^{19}$ years, we improved existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude. This result is the most sensitive search for a single $\beta$ and electron capture decay ever achieved.

Abstract:Mass-separated Ta-187 114 in a high-spin isomeric state has been produced for the first time by multinucleon transfer reactions, employing an argon gas-stopping cell and laser ionization. Internal gamma rays revealed a T-1/2 = 7.3 +/- 0.9 s isomer at 1778 +/- 1 keV, which decays through a rotational band with perturbations associated with the approach to a prolate-oblate shape transition. Model calculations show less influence from triaxiality compared to heavier elements in the same mass region. The isomer-decay reduced E2 hindrance factor f(nu) = 27 +/- 1 supports the interpretation that axial symmetry is approximately conserved.

Abstract:Two-step gamma transitions corresponding to the decays from the compound state (6,062.93 keV) to the ground state of 182Ta nucleus have been investigated via a 181Ta(n,γ)182Ta reaction using the thermal neutron beam from the No.3 neutron channel of the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor and a gamma-gamma coincidence spectrometer. By comparing with data extracted from the Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) library, the authors have determined the order of 20 pairs of gamma cascade transitions, and then constructed a corresponding partial nuclear level scheme of 182Ta. Based on the detected gamma transitions and levels, 17 primary transitions, 1 secondary transition, and 20 intermediate levels are found to be the same as those in the ENSDF. The remaining 3 primary transitions and 19 secondary transitions are, thus, considered as the new data. In addition, a tentative spin range of (2, 3, 4)ħ. has been assigned to all the intermediate levels detected within the present work.

Abstract:The relative intensities of gamma transitions in the W182 and W183 nuclie have been measured with an accuracy of 5% using a bent-crystal gamma-ray spectrometer. A careful analysis of the various corrections applied was made. With only minor exceptions the results are in good agreement with results obtained by other experimenters subssntaining thje technique for measuring precisely gamma ray intensities with a bent-ccrystal spectrometer. The gamma ray branching ratios in W183 obtained in this experiment serve as a basis for a band mixing analysis to be described in the following paper.

Abstract:Possible theoretical electromagnetic paths between the ground state and the isomeric state at 75.3 keV in 180Ta are discussed in the framework of the two-quasiparticle-plus-phonon model and the standard axially-symmetric rotor model including Coriolis mixing. Experimental transition rates from the isomeric state to the ground state via observed mediating states are compared to the theoretical ones.

Abstract:Tantalum-180m is nature's rarest (quasi) stable isotope and its astrophysical origin is an open question. A possible production site of this isotope is the slow neutron capture process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars, where it can be produced via neutron capture reactions on unstable $^{179}$Ta. We report a new measurement of the $^{179}$Ta($n,\gamma$)$^{180}$Ta cross section at thermal neutron energies via the activation technique. Our results for the thermal and resonance-integral cross-sections are 952 $\pm$ 57 b and 2013 $\pm$ 148 b, respectively. The thermal cross section is in good agreement with the only previous measurement (Phys. Rev C {\bf 60} 025802, 1999), while the resonance integral is different by a factor of $\approx$1.7. While neutron energies in this work are smaller than the energies in a stellar environment, our results may lead to improvements in theoretical predictions of the stellar cross section.

Abstract:Background: As a Borromean system, $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ is weakly bound, while its mirror partner $^{9}\mathrm{B}$ is an unbound system. Such weakly bound and unbound nuclei are usually accompanied with exotic structures and decay modes which attract a lot of experimental and theoretical attentions.Purpose: Due to the mirror symmetry, $^{9}\mathrm{B}$ and $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ share many similar properties, but experience different continuum effect mainly caused by Coulomb interaction. In this work, we try to gain more insight into the cluster structures of $^{9}\mathrm{B}$ and $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$, and analyze the Thomas-Ehrman effect therein. Meanwhile, another purpose of this work is to study the decay dynamics and mechanisms of $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{9}\mathrm{B}$, and explore the possible three-body decay in their low-lying states.Methods: The three-body Gamow coupled-channel method has been used to calculate the structures of $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{9}\mathrm{B}$ mirror systems. The corresponding wave functions have been propagated to analyze the decay dynamics.Results: According to the calculated spectra and density distributions of $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ and $^{9}\mathrm{B}$, the Thomas-Ehrman effect is found in those states with small orbital-angular momenta. By comparing the wave functions in two- and three-body frameworks, the nature of the $1/{2}^{+}$ state of $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$ has been discussed. Moreover, the low-lying states with possibly different decay mechanisms have been discussed based on the results of the density evolution and asymptotic correlations.Conclusions: Consequently, it has been found that the behavior of the two-body virtual state can leave an imprint in a many-body system, but its characteristics might be diluted by the configuration mixing especially for the nuclei with two subsystems unbound. As to the decay properties, it has been demonstrated that $^{9}\mathrm{Be}(5/{2}_{1}^{+}), ^{9}\mathrm{Be}(1/{2}_{1}^{+})$, and $^{9}\mathrm{B}(5/{2}_{1}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ are likely to correspond to the sequential, ``democratic'', and three-body decay mechanisms, respectively.
Deep-underground search for the decay of 180m-Ta with an ultra-low-background HPGe detector

Abstract:$^{180m}$Ta is the longest-lived metastable state presently known. Its decay has not been observed yet. In this work, we report a new result on the decay of \mTa obtained with a $2015.12$-g tantalum sample measured for $527.7$ d with an ultra-low background HPGe detector in the STELLA laboratory of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), in Italy. Before the measurement, the sample has been stored deep-underground for ten years, resulting in subdominant background contributions from cosmogenically activated $^{182}$Ta. We observe no signal in the regions of interest and set half-life limits on the process for the two channels EC and $\beta^-$: $T_{1/2,~\mathrm{EC}} > 1.6 \times 10^{18}$ yr and $T_{1/2,~\beta^-} > 1.1\times 10^{18}$ yr ($90$\% C.\,I.), respectively. We also set the limit on the $\gamma$ de-excitation / IC channel: $T_{1/2,~\mathrm{IC}} > 4.1 \times 10^{15}$ yr ($90$\% C.\,I.). These are, as of now, the most stringent bounds on the decay of $^{180m}$Ta worldwide. Finally, we test the hypothetical scenarios of de-excitation of $^{180m}$Ta by cosmological Dark Matter and constrain new parameter space for strongly-interacting dark-matter particle with mass up to $10^5$ GeV.

Decay behavior of hidden-strange hadronic molecular state $N(2270)$

Abstract:In this article, we systematically discuss the decay patterns of the hidden-strange hadronic molecular state $N(2270)$ which is assumed as an S-wave $K^\ast\Sigma^\ast$ shallow bound state with its possible quantum numbers $J^P$ which are ${1/2}^-$, ${3/2}^-$ and ${5/2}^-$. By using the effective Lagrangian approach and considering pseudo-scalar meson and vector meson exchanges, we have thoroughly calculated and discussed the decay behavior of the $N(2270)$ molecular state, including hadronic and radiative decay and the cutoff dependence, for different $J^P$ values. For all three cases, $K^\ast \Lambda$, $K^\ast \Sigma$, and $\rho N$ final states are always included as the main decay channels. However, the $K \Lambda$, $\pi N$ and $\pi \Delta$ final states exhibit notable differences. These different decay properties will provide valuable guidance for future experimental searches and aid in distinguishing different $J^P$ assumptions and understanding their internal structures.

Stability and fine structure of decay of isomers in the trans-tin region of the nuclear chart and their single-particle structure

Abstract:The stability of nuclear isomers reflects a complex interplay of quantum-mechanical factors, influenced by the nuclear structure and the single-particle arrangement of nucleons within the nucleus. Here, we trace the factors behind the abundance and persistence of 1342 isomers over the trans-tin region of the nuclear chart from Sn to Tl, providing insight into the role of single-particle structure in controlling their stability and α decays. We found that nucleons originally belonging, or transferred, to the π,ν1h11/2− and ν1i13/2+ shell-model orbitals are directly connected to a substantial fraction of the observed isomers in this region, especially the more copious and more stable among them in addition to those of very high spin. They contribute either solely as odd valence nucleons or via a pure character of fully aligned configurations of a multiple of them, or with coupling to other valence nucleons, in addition to possible phonon coupling to lower spin states. A similar role is played by the π1g−17/2+ ( π3s1/2+ ) proton hole for the copious and more stable Ta (Tl) isomers, by two protons reside outside the closed core of Z0=50 in Te, by one (two) vacancies to the shell closure of N0=82 for the isomers of N=81 (80), by valence ν1h9/2− neutrons (hole) for N=107 , and by a single lacked ν3s1/2+ neutron for N=79 . The extracted α -preformation probability is indicated to increase in isomers relative to their authentic ground states, when they release less energy. As in ground states, the stability of the isomeric states effectively increases with increasing the presupposed transfer of angular momentum, and, if the decay implicates a change in parity; lower value of the preformation probability is indicated in both cases. Abstract:High spin states in Ta-175 are populated by the Gd-160 (F-19,4n) Ta-175 reaction. This experiment, carried out at the HI-13 tandem accelerator at the China Institute of Atomic Energy which measured the gamma-gamma coincidences, gives rise to a new level scheme. Two important new features are embedded in this scheme. First, the seven decay sequences built on 1/2 [541], 7/2 [404], 5/2 [402], and 9/2 [514] proton Nilsson configurations are significantly extended to higher spins. For example, for the 1/2 [541] band, the levels have extended from 22-/2 to 61-/2 and, for [404] band, from 21-/2 to 41-/2. Second, compared to the neighboring even-even nuclides, the neutron AB crossing frequency built on the h9/2 proton Nilsson state 1/2 [541] is significantly larger, which according the conventional cranking shell model (CSM) is an anomaly. In this paper, this large crossing frequency is also discussed within the framework of the projected shell model. It is shown that this anomaly found in CSM can be satisfactorily explained, thus suggesting an alternative understanding.
Nonexponential Decay in Atomic Tunneling

Abstract:Summary form only given.We report the observation of short-time deviation from exponential decay in a quantum tunneling experiment. Our system consists of ultracold sodium atoms that are trapped in an accelerating periodic optical potential created by a standing wave of light. Atoms can escape the wells via quantum tunneling, and the number that remain is measured as a function of interaction time for a fixed value of the well depth and acceleration. To study tunneling in this system, sodium atoms are first trapped and cooled in a magneto-optical trap. The trapping beams as well as the magnetic field gradient are then turned off, and an accelerating far-detuned standing wave of light is turned on. A three-step acceleration is implemented to measure the loss due to tunneling. Once the final velocity is reached, the potential is turned off and the atomic fluorescence is imaged after a free drift time. We have measured the survival probability and found that the initial survival probability is flat and then crosses over to an exponential decay. The intermediate stage is characterized by a time-dependent loss rate. To analyze the short-time tunneling probability and the approach to exponential decay, we use a simple model of the band structure with a single (trapped) band separated by a bandgap from a free particle state. We find an analytic expression for the survival probability that is quadratic for the first few microseconds of evolution, with a crossover to exponential decay at long times. We show that this crossover time is related to the tunneling time. We also identify a new parameter regime where coherent oscillations of the survival probability are seen.
Inelastic electron scattering-induced nuclear excitation rates and dynamics in $^{229}$Th

Abstract:In the present work, we investigate the excitation rates and population dynamics of $^{229}$Th nuclei induced by inelastic electron scattering, focusing on how electron energy, flux, and ionic charge state influence the excitation process of the nuclei. Using the Dirac Hartree-Fock-Slater method, we calculate cross sections for both the isomeric state (8.36 eV) and the second-excited state (29.19 keV) of $^{229}$Th over a wide range of ionic charge states and electron energies. Our results demonstrate that these factors significantly impact the nuclear excitation efficiency. The effect of indirect excitation through the second-excited state on enhancing the accumulation of nuclei in the isomeric state cannot be ignored. By applying rate equations to model the temporal evolution of nuclear populations, we show that under optimal conditions, up to 10\% of $^{229}$Th$^{4+}$ ions can be accumulated in the isomeric state. These findings provide important insights for optimizing electron-nucleus interactions, contributing to the development of $^{229}$Th-based nuclear clocks and relevant precision measurement applications.

Abstract:The results are presented on the study of the electronic structure of thorium atoms adsorbed by the liquid atomic layer deposition from aqueous solution of thorium nitrate on the surface of CaF2. The chemical state of the atoms and the change of the band structure in the surface layers of Th/CaF2 system on CaF2 substrate were investigated by XPS and REELS techniques. It was found that REELS spectra for Th/CaF2 system include peaks in the region of low energy losses (3-7 eV) which are missing in the similar spectra for pure CaF2. It is concluded that the presence of the observed features in the REELS spectra is associated with the chemical state of thorium atoms and is caused by the presence of uncompensated chemical bonds at the Th/CaF2 interface, and, therefore, by the presence of unbound 6d- and 7s-electrons of thorium atoms. Assuming the equivalence of the electronic configuration of thorium-229 and thorium-232 atoms, an estimate was made on the time decay of the excited state of thorium-229 nuclei through the channel of the electron conversion. It was found that the relaxation time is about 40 {\mu}s for 6d-electrons, and about 1 {\mu}s for 7s-electrons.

Abstract:Two low-lying isomeric states in Ta-169 have been identified via Tb-159(O-16, 6n gamma)Ta-169 reaction. Their half-lives are measured to be 28 +/- 5 ns for the 9/2(-) level and 17 +/- 4 ns for the 5/2(-) level by using the delayed gamma-gamma coincidence method. These two isomeric states are considered to be the bandheads with 9/2(-)[514] and 1/2(-)[541]configurations, respectively. Possible neutron quasiparticle configuration for the ground state of W-169 is discussed.

Abstract:The low-lying structure of W-188,W-190,W-192 has been studied following beta decays of the neutron-rich mother nuclei Ta-188,Ta-190,Ta-192 produced following the projectile fragmentation of a 1-GeV-per-nucleon Pb-208 primary beam on a natural beryllium target at the GSI Fragment Separator. The beta-decay half-lives of Ta-188, Ta-190, and Ta-192 have been measured, with gamma-ray decays of low-lying states in their respective W daughter nuclei, using heavy-ion beta-gamma correlations and a position-sensitive silicon detector setup. The data provide information on the low-lying excited states in W-188, W-190, and W-192, which highlight a change in nuclear shape at W-190 compared with that of lighter W isotopes. This evolution of ground-state structure along the W isotopic chain is discussed as evidence for a possible proton subshell effect for the A similar to 190 region and is consistent with maximization of the gamma-softness of the nuclear potential around N similar to 116.

Abstract:The assisted tunneling of a metastable state between barriers is investigated analytically by means of a simplified one dimensional model. A time dependent perturbation changes the pole spectrum of the wave function introducing a larger decay constant. New insights about the decay of a metastable state are found. The scheme is exemplified for parameters corresponding to the nuclear process of $\alpha$ decay.

Abstract:The popularity of applying machine learning methods to computational linguistics problems has produced a large supply of trainable natural language processing systems. Most problems of interest have an array of off-the-shelf products or downloadable code implementing solutions using various techniques. Where these solutions are developed independently, it is observed that their errors tend to be independently distributed. This thesis is concerned with approaches for capitalizing on this situation in a sample problem domain, Penn Treebank-style parsing. The machine learning community provides techniques for combining outputs of classifiers, but parser output is more structured and interdependent than classifications. To address this discrepancy, two novel strategies for combining parsers are used: learning to control a switch between parsers and constructing a hybrid parse from multiple parsers' outputs. Off-the-shelf parsers are not developed with an intention to perform well in a collaborative ensemble. Two techniques are presented for producing an ensemble of parsers that collaborate. All of the ensemble members are created using the same underlying parser induction algorithm, and the method for producing complementary parsers is only loosely constrained by that chosen algorithm.

Abstract:The empirical coupled-channel (ECC) model and the universal fusion function (UFF) prescription are used to analyse the data of capture cross sections for reactions ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta and ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta reported recently by A. Wakhle {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. C 97, 021602(R) (2018)]. The results of the ECC model are in good agreement with the data of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta while, for ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta, the predictions of the ECC model overestimate the above-barrier capture cross sections. Comparing the reduced data of these two reactions, it is found that the above-barrier cross sections of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are consistent with the UFF and are larger than those of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta. This implies that the capture cross sections of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are suppressed at energies above the Coulomb barrier. Furthermore, at sub-barrier energies, the reduced calculated capture cross sections of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are a little larger than those of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta, which is owing to the coupling to the positive $Q$-value two-neutron transfer channel.
