Abstract:The central focus of this work is to make progress towards understanding entanglement as a resource for computation by examining the quantum correlations that can be extracted from stabilizer states. As such, we focus on the stabilizer formalism, local realism, and the convergence of the two.

Abstract:We investigate how stabilizer theory can be used for constructing sufficient conditions for entanglement. First, we show how entanglement witnesses can be derived for a given state, provided some stabilizing operators of the state are known. These witnesses require only a small effort for an experimental implementation and are robust against noise. Second, we demonstrate that also nonlinear criteria based on uncertainty relations can be derived from stabilizing operators. These criteria can sometimes improve the witnesses by adding nonlinear correction terms. All our criteria detect states close to Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, cluster and graph states. We show that similar ideas can be used to derive entanglement conditions for states which do not fit the stabilizer formalism, such as the three-qubit W state. We also discuss connections between the witnesses and some Bell inequalities.

Abstract:The standard stabilizer formalism provides a setting to show that quantum computation restricted to operations within the Clifford group are classically efficiently simulable: this is the content of the well-known Gottesman-Knill theorem. This work analyzes the mathematical structure behind this theorem to find possible generalizations and derivation of constraints required for constructing a non-trivial generalized Clifford group. We prove that if the closure of the stabilizing set is dense in the set of transformations, then the associated Clifford group is trivial, consisting only of local gates and permutations of subsystems. This result demonstrates the close relationship between the density of the stabilizing set and the simplicity of the corresponding Clifford group. We apply the analysis to investigate stabilization with binary observables for qubits and find that the formalism is equivalent to the standard stabilization for a low number of qubits. Based on the observed patterns, we conjecture that a large class of generalized stabilizer states are equivalent to the standard ones. Our results can be used to construct novel Gottesman-Knill-type results and consequently draw a sharper line between quantum and classical computation.

Extremality of stabilizer states

Abstract:We investigate the extremality of stabilizer states to reveal their exceptional role in the space of all $n$-qubit/qudit states. We establish uncertainty principles for the characteristic function and the Wigner function of states, respectively. We find that only stabilizer states achieve saturation in these principles. Furthermore, we prove a general theorem that stabilizer states are extremal for convex information measures invariant under local unitaries. We explore this extremality in the context of various quantum information and correlation measures, including entanglement entropy, conditional entropy and other entanglement measures. Additionally, leveraging the recent discovery that stabilizer states are the limit states under quantum convolution, we establish the monotonicity of the entanglement entropy and conditional entropy under quantum convolution. These results highlight the remarkable information-theoretic properties of stabilizer states. Their extremality provides valuable insights into their ability to capture information content and correlations, paving the way for further exploration of their potential in quantum information processing.

Abstract:Large-scale quantum computation is likely to require massive quantum error correction (QEC). QEC codes and circuits are described via the stabilizer formalism, which represents stabilizer states by keeping track of the operators that preserve them. Such states are obtained by stabilizer circuits (consisting of CNOT, Hadamard and Phase gates) and can be represented compactly on conventional computers using $O(n^2)$ bits, where $n$ is the number of qubits. As an additional application, the work by Aaronson and Gottesman suggests the use of superpositions of stabilizer states to represent arbitrary quantum states. To aid in such applications and improve our understanding of stabilizer states, we characterize and count nearest-neighbor stabilizer states, quantify the distribution of angles between pairs of stabilizer states, study succinct stabilizer superpositions and stabilizer bivectors, explore the approximation of non-stabilizer states by single stabilizer states and short linear combinations of stabilizer states, develop an improved inner-product computation for stabilizer states via synthesis of compact canonical stabilizer circuits, propose an orthogonalization procedure for stabilizer states, and evaluate several of these algorithms empirically.

Abstract:We study mathematical, physical and computational aspects of the stabilizer formalism arising in quantum information and quantum computation. The measurement process of Pauli observables with its algorithm is given. It is shown that to detect genuine entanglement we need a full set of stabilizer generators and the stabilizer witness is coarser than the GHZ (Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger) witness. We discuss stabilizer codes and construct a stabilizer code from a given linear code. We also discuss quantum error correction, error recovery criteria and syndrome extraction. The symplectic structure of the stabilizer formalism is established and it is shown that any stabilizer code is unitarily equivalent to a trivial code. The structure of graph codes as stabilizer codes is identified by obtaining the respective stabilizer generators. The distance of embeddable stabilizer codes in lattices is obtained. We discuss the Knill–Gottesman theorem, tableau representation and frame representation. The runtime of simulating stabilizer gates is obtained by applying stabilizer matrices. Furthermore, an algorithm for updating global phases is given. Resolution of quantum channels into stabilizer channels is shown. We discuss capacity achieving codes to obtain the capacity of the quantum erasure channel. Finally, we discuss the shadow tomography problem and an algorithm for constructing classical shadow is given.

All genuinely entangled stabilizer subspaces are multipartite fully nonlocal

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between entanglement and Bell nonlocality is one of the long-lasting open problems in quantum physics which is important both from the fundamental and application points of view. In particular, while both entanglement and Bell nonlocality are key resources in quantum information, the latter appears to be a stronger one because it allows for information processing in the device-independent framework in which the players need not trust their devices. Thus, understanding which entangled states give rise to Bell nonlocality and thus are resourceful in this framework is an important and interesting task. Here we establish the equivalence between genuine entanglement and genuine nonlocal for a broad class of multipartite (pure and mixed) states originating from the stabilizer formalism. In fact, we demonstrate a much stronger result that any (mixed) stabilizer state defined on a genuinely entangled subspace is multipartite fully nonlocal meaning that it gives rise to correlations that have no contribution coming from local hidden variable models of any type. We thus also introduce the first examples of genuinely nonlocal subspaces in multiqubit Hilbert spaces in which every single pure state is genuinely nonlocal.

Local equivalence of stabilizer states: a graphical characterisation

Abstract:Stabilizer states form a ubiquitous family of quantum states that can be graphically represented through the graph state formalism. A fundamental property of graph states is that applying a local complementation - a well-known and extensively studied graph transformation - results in a graph that represents the same entanglement as the original. In other words, the corresponding graph states are LU-equivalent. This property served as the cornerstone for capturing non-trivial quantum properties in a simple graphical manner, in the study of quantum entanglement but also for developing protocols and models based on graph states and stabilizer states, such as measurement-based quantum computing, secret sharing, error correction, entanglement distribution... However, local complementation fails short to fully characterise entanglement: there exist pairs of graph states that are LU-equivalent but cannot be transformed one into the other using local complementations. Only few is known about the equivalence of graph states beyond local complementation. We introduce a generalization of local complementation which graphically characterises the LU-equivalence of graph states. We use this characterisation to show the existence of a strict infinite hierarchy of equivalences of graph states. Our approach is based on minimal local sets, which are subsets of vertices that are known to cover any graph, and to be invariant under local complementation and even LU-equivalence. We use these structures to provide a type to each vertex of a graph, leading to a natural standard form in which the LU-equivalence can be exhibited and captured by means of generalised local complementation.

Doped stabilizer states in many-body physics and where to find them

Abstract:This work uncovers a fundamental connection between doped stabilizer states, a concept from quantum information theory, and the structure of eigenstates in perturbed many-body quantum systems. We prove that for Hamiltonians consisting of a sum of commuting Pauli operators (i.e., stabilizer Hamiltonians) and a perturbation composed of a limited number of arbitrary Pauli terms, the eigenstates can be represented as doped stabilizer states with small stabilizer nullity. This result enables the application of stabilizer techniques to a broad class of many-body systems, even in highly entangled regimes. Building on this, we develop efficient classical algorithms for tasks such as finding low-energy eigenstates, simulating quench dynamics, preparing Gibbs states, and computing entanglement entropies in these systems. Our work opens up new possibilities for understanding the robustness of topological order and the dynamics of many-body systems under perturbations, paving the way for novel insights into the interplay of quantum information, entanglement, and many-body systems.

Bipartite entanglement of noisy stabilizer states through the lens of stabilizer codes

Abstract:Stabilizer states are a prime resource for a number of applications in quantum information science, such as secret-sharing and measurement-based quantum computation. This motivates us to study the entanglement of noisy stabilizer states across a bipartition. We show that the spectra of the corresponding reduced states can be expressed in terms of properties of an associated stabilizer code. In particular, this allows us to show that the coherent information is related to the so-called syndrome entropy of the underlying code. We use this viewpoint to find stabilizer states that are resilient against noise, allowing for more robust entanglement distribution in near-term quantum networks. We specialize our results to the case of graph states, where the found connections with stabilizer codes reduces back to classical linear codes for dephasing noise. On our way we provide an alternative proof of the fact that every qubit stabilizer code is equivalent up to single-qubit Clifford gates to a graph code.

Abstract:Quantum states with minimum or maximum uncertainty are of special significance due to their extreme properties. Celebrated examples are coherent states induced from certain Lie groups and intelligent states for various uncertainty relations. In this work, by virtue of the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation, we introduce an entropic quantifier of uncertainty and use it to characterize several important families of states in the stabilizer formalism of quantum computation. More specifically, we show that the stabilizer states and -type magic states stand at the two extremes of the entropic quantifier of uncertainty: The former are precisely the minimum entropic uncertainty states, while the latter are precisely the maximum entropic uncertainty states. Moreover, interpolating between the above two extremes, the -type magic states are the saddle points of the entropic quantifier of uncertainty. These entropic characterizations reveal some intrinsic features of stabilizer states, - and -type magic states, and cast novel light on the resource-theoretic viewpoint of regarding the stabilizer states as free states and the -type magic states as the most precious source states in the stabilizer quantum theory.

A Novel Stabilizer-based Entanglement Distillation Protocol for Qudits

Abstract:Entanglement distillation, the process of converting weakly entangled states into maximally entangled ones using Local Operations and Classical Communication (LOCC), is pivotal for robust entanglement-assisted quantum information processing in error-prone environments. A construction based on stabilizer codes offers an effective method for designing such protocols. By analytically investigating the effective action of stabilizer protocols for codes in arbitrary dimensions, we establish a standard form for the output states of recurrent stabilizer-based distillation. This links the properties of input states, stabilizers, and encodings to the properties of the protocol. Based on those insights, we present a novel two-copy distillation protocol, applicable to all bipartite states, that maximizes the fidelity increase per iteration for Bell-diagonal states in any prime dimension. The power of this framework and the protocol is demonstrated through numerical investigations, which provide evidence of its superior performance in terms of efficiency and distillability of low-fidelity states compared to other well-established recurrence protocols. By elucidating the interplay between states, errors, and protocols, our contribution advances the systematic development of highly effective distillation protocols across arbitrary dimensions, enhancing our understanding of distillability.

Abstract:Entropic uncertainty relations express the quantum mechanical uncertainty principle by quantifying uncertainty in terms of entropy. Central questions include the derivation of lower bounds on the total uncertainty for given observables, the characterization of observables that allow strong uncertainty relations, and the construction of such relations for the case of several observables. We demonstrate how the stabilizer formalism can be applied to these questions. We show that the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation is tight for the measurement in any pair of stabilizer bases. We compare the relative strengths of variance-based and various entropic uncertainty relations for dichotomic anticommuting observables.

Stabilizer ground states for simulating quantum many-body physics: theory, algorithms, and applications

Abstract:Stabilizer states, which are also known as the Clifford states, have been commonly utilized in quantum information, quantum error correction, and quantum circuit simulation due to their simple mathematical structure. In this work, we apply stabilizer states to tackle quantum many-body ground state problems and introduce the concept of stabilizer ground states. We establish an equivalence formalism for identifying stabilizer ground states of general Pauli Hamiltonians. Moreover, we develop an exact and linear-scaled algorithm to obtain stabilizer ground states of 1D local Hamiltonians and thus free from discrete optimization. This proposed equivalence formalism and linear-scaled algorithm are not only applicable to finite-size systems, but also adaptable to infinite periodic systems. The scalability and efficiency of the algorithms are numerically benchmarked on different Hamiltonians. Finally, we demonstrate that stabilizer ground states are promising tools for not only qualitative understanding of quantum systems, but also cornerstones of more advanced classical or quantum algorithms.

Abstract:We introduce a stabilizer formalism for the general quantum error correction framework called operator algebra quantum error correction (OAQEC), which generalizes Gottesman's formulation for traditional quantum error correcting codes (QEC) and Poulin's for operator quantum error correction and subsystem codes (OQEC). The construction generates hybrid classical-quantum stabilizer codes and we formulate a theorem that fully characterizes the Pauli errors that are correctable for a given code, generalizing the fundamental theorems for the QEC and OQEC stabilizer formalisms. We discover hybrid versions of the Bacon-Shor subsystem codes motivated by the formalism, and we apply the theorem to derive a result that gives the distance of such codes. We show how some recent hybrid subspace code constructions are captured by the formalism, and we also indicate how it extends to qudits.

Useful entanglement can be extracted from noisy graph states

Abstract:Cluster states and graph states in general offer a useful model of the stabilizer formalism and a path toward the development of measurement-based quantum computation. Their defining structure -- the stabilizer group -- encodes all possible correlations which can be observed during measurement. Those outcomes which are compatible with the stabilizer structure make error correction possible. Here, we leverage both properties to design feasible families of states that can be used as robust building blocks of quantum computation. This procedure reduces the effect of experimentally relevant noise models on the extraction of smaller entangled states from the larger noisy graph state. In particular, we study the extraction of Bell pairs from linearly extended graph states -- this has the immediate consequence for state teleportation across the graph. We show that robust entanglement can be extracted by proper design of the linear graph with only a minimal overhead of the physical qubits. This scenario is relevant to systems in which the entanglement can be created between neighboring sites. The results shown in this work may provide a mathematical framework for noise reduction in measurement-based quantum computation. With proper connectivity structures, the effect of noise can be minimized for a large class of realistic noise processes.

Abstract:We develop a method for visualizing the internal structure of multipartite entanglement in pure stabilizer states. Our algorithm graphically organizes the many-body correlations in a hierarchical structure. This provides a rich taxonomy from which one can extract a number of traditional quantities such as entanglement depth and entanglement entropy. Our construction is gauge invariant and goes beyond traditional entanglement measures by visually revealing how quantum information and entanglement is distributed. We use this tool to analyze the internal structures of prototypical stabilizer states (GHZ state, cluster state, stabilizer error correction codes) and are able to contrast the complexity of highly entangled volume law states generated by random unitary operators and random projective measurements.

Abstract:Locally real states of electromagnetic radiation derived from the underlying quantum mechanical formalism are shown to provide an alternative basis for definite polarized states of the widely accepted probabilistic interpretation. The locally real states traverse common loop configurations without invoking non-local superposition. Correlated photon pairs represented by the locally real states are consistent with the underlying quantum mechanical formalism independent of Bell's inequality and without invoking entanglement. Replacement of interdependent non-local probabilistic states with the locally real states yields independence of those states. A novel loop configuration provides differential testability of the representation of the locally real states relative to the probabilistic interpretation with the prediction of a unique polarization state.
