Abstract:A model in which the soft collisions of the nucleon are described in terms of interactions of its two constituents (a quark and a diquark) is proposed. When adjusted to describe precisely the elastic proton-proton scattering data and supplemented with the idea of wounded constituents, the model accounts rather well for the centrality dependence of particle production in the central rapidity region at RHIC energies.

Abstract:We explore predictions of the wounded quark model for particle production and properties of the initial state formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The approach is applied uniformly to A+A collisions in a wide collision energy range, as well as for p+A and p+p collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find that generically the predictions from wounded quarks for such features as eccentricities or initial sizes are close (within 15\%) to predictions of the wounded nucleon model with an amended binary component. A larger difference is found for the size in p+Pb system, where the wounded quark model yields a smaller (more compact) initial fireball than the standard wounded nucleon model. The inclusion of subnucleonic degrees of freedom allows us to analyze p+p collisions in an analogous way, with predictions that can be used in further collective evolution. The approximate linear dependence of particle production in A+A collisions on the number of wounded quarks, as found in previous studies, makes the approach based on wounded quarks natural. Importantly, at the LHC energies we find approximate uniformity in particle production from wounded quarks, where at a given collision energy per nucleon pair similar production of initial entropy per source is needed to explain the particle production from p+p collisions up to A+A collisions. We also discuss the sensitivity of the wounded quark model predictions to distribution of quarks in nucleons, distribution of nucleons in nuclei, and to the quark-quark inelasticity profile in the impact parameter. In our procedure, the quark-quark inelasticity profile is chosen in such a way that the experiment-based parametrization of the proton-proton inelasticity profile is properly reproduced. The parameters of the overlaid multiplicity distribution is fixed from p+p and p+Pb data.

Wounded Quarks and Multiplicity at Relativistic Ion Colliders

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a parameterization which is based on a phenomenological model involving the wounded quarks interactions for explaining the average charged particle multiplicity $\ < n_{ch}\ >$, the central pseudo-rapidity density $\ < (dn/d\eta)_{\eta=0}\ >$ and complete rapidity dependence of $dn/d{\eta}$ in relativistic heavy-ion collider experiments. The model also interrelates nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions with p-A and p-p interactions. Our parameterization rests on simple assumptions regarding mean number of participating quarks and their average number of collisions. The results for $\ < n_{ch}\ >$ and their variations with the mass number of colliding nuclei, center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$) and collision centrality are well supported by the available experimental data. Finally we give the predictions from our model for A-A collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiments. Our results indicate the existence of a possible universal production mechanism for p-p, p-A and A-A collisions.

Abstract:We use the wounded nucleon model to study the forward-backward multiplicity fluctuations measured by the PHOBOS Collaboration in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The enhancement of forward-backward fluctuations in Au+Au collisions with respect to the elementary p+p interactions is in this model explained by the asymmetric shape of the pseudorapidity density of produced particles from a single wounded nucleon and the fluctuations of the number of wounded nucleons in the colliding nuclei. The wounded nucleon model describes these experimental data better than the HIJING, AMPT or UrQMD models do.

Abstract:The charged particle multiplicity ($n_{ch}$) and pseudorapidity density $(dn_{ch}/d\eta)$ are key observables to characterize the properties of matter created in heavy ion collisions. The dependence of these observables on collision energy and the collision geometry are a key tool to understand the underlying particle production mechanism. Recently a lot of focus has been made on asymmetric and deformed nuclei collisions since these collisions can provide a deeper understanding about the nature of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). On phenomenological perspective a unified model which describes the experimental data coming from various kind of collision experiments, is much needed to provide the physical insights about the production mechanism. In this paper, we have calculated the charged hadron multiplicities for nucleon-nucleus (such as proton-lead $(p-Pb)$ and asymmetric nuclei collisions like deutron-gold $(d-Au)$, and copper-gold $(Cu-Au)$ within a new version of wounded quark model (WQM) and shown their variation with respect to centrality. Further we have used a suitable density function within our WQM to calculate pseudorapidity density of charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in the collisions of deformed uranium nuclei. We found that our model with suitable density functions describes the experimental data for symmetric, asymmetric and deformed nuclei collisions simultaneously over a wide range of collision energy.

Abstract:Heavy quark and charmonium production as well as their space-time evolution are studied in transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. In the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach of MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS) heavy quarks can be produced in initial hard parton scatterings or during the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma. Subsequently, they interact with the medium via binary scatterings with a running coupling and a more precise Debye screening which is derived from hard thermal loop calculations, participate in the flow and lose energy. We present results of the elliptic flow and nuclear modification factor of heavy quarks and compare them to available data. Furthermore, preliminary results on J/psi suppression at forward and mid-rapidity are reported for central and non-central collisions at RHIC. For this, we study cold nuclear matter effects and the dissociation as well as regeneration of J/psi in the quark-gluon plasma.

A Combined Model for Pseudorapidity Distributions in Cu-Cu Collisions at BNL-RHIC Energies

Abstract:The charged particles produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions come from leading particles and those frozen out from the hot and dense matter created in collisions. The leading particles are conventionally supposed having Gaussian rapidity distributions normalized to the number of participants. The hot and dense matter is assumed to expand according to the unified hydrodynamics, a hydro model which unifies the features of Landau and Hwa-Bjorken model, and freeze out into charged particles from a space-like hypersurface with a proper time of Tau_FO . The rapidity distribution of this part of charged particles can be derived out analytically. The combined contribution from both leading particles and unified hydrodynamics is then compared against the experimental data performed by BNL-RHIC-PHOBOS Collaboration in different centrality Cu-Cu collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 and 62.4 GeV, respectively. The model predictions are in well consistent with experimental measurements.
Constituent quark model for nuclear stopping in high energy nuclear collisions

Abstract:We study the nuclear stopping in high energy nuclear collisions using the constituent quark model. It is assumed that wounded nucleons with different number of interacted quarks hadronize in different ways. The probabilities of having such wounded nucleons are evaluated for proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. After examining our model in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and fixing the hadronization functions, it is extended to nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is used to calculate the rapidity distribution and the rapidity shift of final state protons in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The computed results are in good agreement with the experimental data on $^{32}\mbox{S} +\ ^{32}\mbox{S}$ at $E_{lab} = 200$ AGeV and $^{208}\mbox{Pb} +\ ^{208}\mbox{Pb}$ at $E_{lab} = 160$ AGeV. Theoretical predictions are also given for proton rapidity distribution in $^{197}\mbox{Au} +\ ^{197}\mbox{Au}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV (BNL-RHIC). We predict that the nearly baryon free region will appear in the midrapidity region and the rapidity shift is $\langle \Delta y \rangle = 2.22$.

Abstract:To account for particle production in relativistic heavy‐ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, a relativistic diffusion model with cylindrical symmetry is derived from nonequilibrium–statistical considerations. It propagates an initial state based on quantum chromodynamics in time toward a thermal equilibrium limit. Calculated distribution functions in transverse‐momentum and pseudorapidity space for pions, kaons, and (anti‐)protons are compared with recent data. A relativistic diffusion model with cylindrical symmetry, which propagates an initial state based on quantum chromodynamics in time toward a thermal equilibrium limit, is derived from nonequilibrium–statistical considerations: adapting an existing framework for Markovian stochastic processes representing relativistic phase‐space trajectories, a Fokker–Planck equation is obtained for the time evolution of particle‐number distribution functions with respect to transverse and longitudinal rapidity. The resulting partially‐evolved distribution functions are transformed to transverse‐momentum and pseudorapidity space, and compared with charged‐hadron data from the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Some soft aspects of relativistic ion collisions

Abstract:Concepts of wounded nucleon and quark participants have been used for years to parametrize and/or to explain many features of high energy nuclear collisions. Some results illustrating successes and failures of these two approaches are presented, including the latest developments. In particular, results on identified particle production from nuclear collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN-SPS are shown. The study has been done for both the nucleon and the constituent quark frameworks using the nuclear overlap model. In addition, some preliminary observations concerning the behavior of pT spectra at forward rapidities, expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor, for hadron-nucleus collisions at the SPS energy are also presented. These results are in relevance to RHIC results for deuteron-gold collisions often interpreted as a manifestation of saturation and/or color glass condensate.

Relativistic diffusion model for hadron production in p-Pb collisions at the LHC

Abstract:We investigate charged-hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions of asymmetric systems within a nonequilibrium-statistical framework. Calculated centrality-dependent pseudorapidity distributions for p-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 and 8.16 TeV are compared with data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our approach combines a relativistic diffusion model with formulations based on quantum chromodynamics while utilizing numerical solutions of a Fokker-Planck equation to account for the shift and broadening of the fragmentation sources for particle-production with respect to the stopping (net-baryon) rapidity distributions. To represent the centrality dependence of charged-hadron production in asymmetric systems over a broad region of pseudorapidities, the consideration and precise modelling of the fragmentation sources - along with the central gluon-gluon source - is found to be essential. Specifically, this results in an inversion of the particle-production amplitude from backward- to forward-dominance when transitioning from central to peripheral collisions, in agreement with recent ATLAS and ALICE p-Pb data at sqrt(s_NN)=5.02 TeV.

Abstract:We investigate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks at hard collisions with gluons and light quarks in quark-gluon plasma produced in central $Au + Au$ collisions at RHIC energy($\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV). As the coupling constant at hard collision in the perturbative QCD is limited by Landau pole at momenta $Q^{2} = \Lambda^{2}$, we use the analytic models of QCD, where the Landau pole is absent. We calculate the energy losses of $b$ and $c$ quarks in analytic model of QCD at $Q^{2} \ge \Lambda^{2}$. At calculations we use the effective quasiparticle model. We use at calculations of total nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}^{b+c}$ the fragmentation of $b$ and $c$ quarks into heavy hadrons with accounting theirs energy losses. We show that this factor gives the considerably suppression of heavy $B$ and $D$ mesons in the region of middle meanings of $p_{\perp}$. The experimental data \cite{2} show, that nonphotonic electrons have the analogous suppression in the same region of $p_{\perp}$.

Abstract:System size dependence of hadron production properties is discussed within the Wounded Nucleon Model and the Statistical Model in the grand canonical, canonical and micro-canonical formulations. Similarities and differences between predictions of the models related to the treatment of conservation laws are exposed. A need for models which would combine a hydrodynamical-like expansion with conservation laws obeyed in individual collisions is stressed.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of the nucleon-nucleon collision profile (probability of interaction as a function of the nucleon-nucleon impact parameter) in the wounded nucleon model and its extensions on several observables measured in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We find that the participant eccentricity coefficient, $\epsilon^\ast$, as well as the higher harmonic coefficients, $\epsilon_n^\ast$, are reduced by 10-20% for mid-peripheral collisions when the realistic (Gaussian) profile is used, as compared to the case with the commonly-used hard-sphere profile. Similarly, the multiplicity fluctuations, treated as the function of the number of wounded nucleons in one of the colliding nuclei, are reduced by 10-20%. This demonstrates that the Glauber Monte Carlo codes should necessarily use the realistic nucleon-nucleon collision profile in precision studies of these observables. The Gaussian collision profile is built-in in {\tt GLISSANDO}.

Abstract:The Ultra-relativistic Quantum-Molecular-Dynamics model (UrQMD) is used to study central Pb+Pb reactions at RHIC ($\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV). The computed collision spectrum reveals that the major part (approx. 80%) of the dynamics is governed by interactions below $\sqrt{s}=100$ GeV. Rapidity spectra of net-baryons (Protons, Hyperons) and produced particles (Pions, Kaons) are predicted. The transverse expansion is studied.

Abstract:The production and space-time evolution of charm and bottom quarks in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are investigated with the partonic transport model BAMPS (Boltzmann approach of multiparton scatterings). Heavy quarks, produced in primary hard parton scatterings during nucleon-nucleon collisions, are sampled using the Monte Carlo event generator PYTHIA or the leading-order minijet model in conjunction with the Glauber model, revealing a strong sensitivity on the parton distribution functions, scales, and heavy-quark mass. In a comprehensive study exploring different charm masses, K factors, and possible initial gluon conditions, secondary production and the evolution of heavy quarks are examined within a fully dynamic BAMPS simulation for central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Although charm production in the quark-gluon plasma can be neglected at RHIC, it is significant at LHC but very sensitive to the initial conditions and the charm mass. Bottom production in the quark-gluon plasma, however, is negligible both at RHIC and LHC.

Abstract:The production of massive gauge bosons, Z(0) and W+/W-, in heavy-ion reactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provides an excellent tool for studying cold nuclear matter effects in high-energy nuclear collisions. In this paper we investigate Z(0) and W+/W- production in p+Pb and Pb+Pb at the LHC, at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order, using the DYNNLO program and incorporating the nuclear parton distribution function (nPDFs) parametrization sets EPS09 and DSSZ, within the framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Numerical simulations of the transverse momentum spectra, rapidity dependence and related nuclear modification factors for Z(0) and W particles, as well as the charge asymmetry for the W boson, are provided and tested against the latest experimental data. It is found that the theoretical results with EPS09 and DSSZ nPDFs can provide good descriptions of the recent data on Z(0) and W-+/- particles in p+Pb and Pb+Pb within the experimental error bars, although some differences between the results with EPS09 and DSSZ can be observed, especially in the rapidity dependence of the Z(0) yield. Theoretical predictions for future measurements on Z(0) and W in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC are also provided.

Abstract:The identification of a hadron in the final state of hadron-collider events that feature a leptonically decaying vector boson can provide essential information on the parton content of the colliding protons. Moreover, the study of hadrons inside jets can provide deeper insights into the fragmentation dynamics. We provide theoretical predictions for specific observables involving either the production of a $Z$ boson in association with light charged hadrons inside a jet or the production of a $W$ boson together with a charmed hadron. We present results for various fragmentation functions and compare our predictions with measurements by LHCb and ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Our predictions are obtained using the antenna subtraction formalism which has been extended to cope with infrared singularities associated to the fragmentation processes in a hadron-collider environment at NLO accuracy.
