Abstract:In this paper, we prove a differential Harnack inequality for positive solutions of time-dependent heat equations with potentials. We also prove a gradient estimate for the positive solution of the time-dependent heat equation.

Abstract:Let ( M n , g ) be an n -dimensional complete Riemannian manifold. We consider gradient estimates for the positive solutions to the following nonlinear parabolic equation: u_t=Δ u+aulog u+bu on M n × [0, T ], where a , b are two real constants. We derive local gradient estimates of the Li-Yau type for positive solutions of the above equations on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. As applications, several parabolic Harnack inequalities are obtained. In particular, our results extend the ones of Davies in Heat Kernels and Spectral Theory, Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics, vol 92, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,1989, and Li and Xu in Adv Math 226:4456–4491 ( 2011 ).

Abstract:In this paper, we present a unified method for deriving differential Harnack inequalities for positive solutions of the semilinear parabolic equation \begin{equation*} \partial_t u=\Delta_V u+H(u) \end{equation*} on complete Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery curvature bounded below. This method transforms the problem of deriving differential Harnack inequalities into solving a related ODE system. As an application of this method, we obtain new and improved estimates for logarithmic-type equations and Yamabe-type equations. Moreover, under the non-negative Bakry-Émery curvature condition, we obtain complete sharp estimates for these equations. As a natural consequence of these results, we also establish sharp Harnack inequalities and Liouville-type theorems for these equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we remove the assumption on the gradient of the Ricci curvature in Hamilton's matrix Harnack estimate for the heat equation on all closed manifolds, answering a question which has been around since the 1990s. New ingredients include a recent sharp Li-Yau estimate, construction of a suitable vector field and various use of integral arguments, iteration and a little tensor algebra.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider gradient estimates for the positive solutions to the following nonlinear parabolic equation: u_t=Δ _V u + au log u on M × [0, T] , where a is a real constant. We obtain the Li-Yau type bounds of the above equation, which cover the estimates in Davies (Heat kernels and spectral theory 1989 ), Huang et al. (Ann Glob Anal Geom 43:209–232, 2013 ), Li and Xu (Adv Math 226:4456–4491, 2011 ) and Qian (J Math Anal Appl 409:556–566, 2014 ). Besides, as a corollary, we give a gradient estimate for the corresponding elliptic case: Δ _V u + au log u = 0, which improves the estimates in Chen and Chen (Ann Glob Anal Geom 35:397–404, 2009 ) and Yang ( Proc AMS 136(11):4095–4102, 2008 ).

Abstract:Let $H=-\Delta+V$ be a Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that gradient estimates for the heat kernel of $H$ with upper Gaussian bounds imply polynomial decay for the kernels of certain smooth dyadic spectral operators. The latter decay property has been known to play an important role in the Littlewood-Paley theory for $L^p$ and Sobolev spaces. We are able to establish the result by modifying Hebisch and the author's recent proofs. We give a counterexample in one dimension to show that there exists $V$ in the Schwartz class such that the long time gradient heat kernel estimate fails.

Abstract:We establish a point-wise gradient estimate for $all$ positive solutions of the conjugate heat equation. This contrasts to Perelman's point-wise gradient estimate which works mainly for the fundamental solution rather than all solutions. Like Perelman's estimate, the most general form of our gradient estimate does not require any curvature assumption. Moreover, assuming only lower bound on the Ricci curvature, we also prove a localized gradient estimate similar to the Li-Yau estimate for the linear Schrödinger heat equation. The main difference with the linear case is that no assumptions on the derivatives of the potential (scalar curvature) are needed. A generalization of Perelman's W-entropy is defined in both the Ricci flow and fixed metric case. We also find a new family of heat kernel estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a Li-Yau type gradient estimate with time dependent parameter for positive solutions of the heat equation, so that the Li-Yau type gradient estimate of Li-Xu are special cases of the estimate. We also obtain improvements of Davies' Li-Yau type gradient estimate. The argument is different with those of Li-Xu and Qian.

Abstract:We derive a gradient estimate for positive functions, in particular for positive solutions to the heat equation, on finite or locally finite graphs. Unlike the well known Li-Yau estimate, which is based on the maximum principle, our estimate follows from the graph structure of the gradient form and the Laplacian operator. Though our assumption on graphs is slightly stronger than that of Bauer et al. (J Differ Geom 99:359–405, 2015), our estimate can be easily applied to nonlinear differential equations, as well as differential inequalities. As applications, we estimate the greatest lower bound of Cheng’s eigenvalue and an upper bound of the minimal heat kernel, which is recently studied by Bauer et al. (Preprint, 2015) by the Li-Yau estimate. Moreover, generalizing an earlier result of Lin and Yau (Math Res Lett 17:343–356, 2010), we derive a lower bound of nonzero eigenvalues by our gradient estimate.
On the Hardy-Hénon heat equation with an inverse square potential

Abstract:We study Cauchy problem for the Hardy-Hénon parabolic equation with an inverse square potential, namely, \[\partial_tu -\Delta u+a|x|^{-2} u= |x|^{\gamma} F_{\alpha}(u),\] where $a\ge-(\frac{d-2}{2})^2,$ $\gamma\in \mathbb R$, $\alpha>1$ and $F_{\alpha}(u)=\mu |u|^{\alpha-1}u, \mu|u|^\alpha$ or $\mu u^\alpha$, $\mu\in \{-1,0,1\}$. We establish sharp fixed time-time decay estimates for heat semigroups $e^{-t (-\Delta + a|x|^{-2})}$ in weighted Lebesgue spaces, which is of independent interest. As an application, we establish: $\bullet$ Local well-posedness (LWP) in scale subcritical and critical weighted Lebesgue spaces. $\bullet$ Small data global existence in critical weighted Lebesgue spaces. $\bullet$ Under certain conditions on $\gamma$ and $\alpha,$ we show that local solution cannot be extended to global one for certain initial data in the subcritical regime. Thus, finite time blow-up in the subcritical Lebesgue space norm is exhibited. $\bullet$ We also demonstrate nonexistence of local positive weak solution (and hence failure of LWP) in supercritical case for $\alpha>1+\frac{2+\gamma}{d}$ the Fujita exponent. This indicates that subcriticality or criticality are necessary in the first point above. In summary, we establish a sharp dissipative estimate and addresses short and long time behaviors of solutions. In particular, we complement several classical results and shed new light on the dynamics of the considered equation.

Abstract:This paper investigates the Harnack inequality for nonnegative solutions to second-order parabolic equations in double divergence form. We impose conditions where the principal coefficients satisfy the Dini mean oscillation condition in $x$, while the drift and zeroth-order coefficients belong to specific Morrey classes. Our analysis contributes to advancing the theoretical foundations of parabolic equations in double divergence form, including Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations for probability densities.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, a differential-geometric method is applied to build some Li–Yau–Hamilton-type Harnack inequalities for the positive solutions to a one spatial dimensional nonlinear reaction–diffusion equation in a plane geometry. The class of reaction–diffusion equation that is considered here contains several important equations some of which are Newel–Whitehead–Segel, Allen–Cahn and Fisher–KPP equations. The Harnack inequalities so derived are used to discuss some other important properties of positive solutions and in the characterization of positive wave solutions.

Abstract:Continuing our previous work (arXiv:1509.07981v1), we derive another global gradient estimate for positive functions, particularly for positive solutions to the heat equation on finite or locally finite graphs. In general, the gradient estimate in the present paper is independent of our previous one. As applications, it can be used to get an upper bound and a lower bound of the heat kernel on locally finite graphs. These global gradient estimates can be compared with the Li–Yau inequality on graphs contributed by Bauer et al. [J. Differential Geom., 99, 359–409 (2015)]. In many topics, such as eigenvalue estimate and heat kernel estimate (not including the Liouville type theorems), replacing the Li–Yau inequality by the global gradient estimate, we can get similar results.

Abstract:This paper is mainly concerned with the observability inequalities for heat equations with time-dependent Lipschtiz potentials. The observability inequality for heat equations asserts that the total energy of a solution is bounded above by the energy localized in a subdomain with an observability constant. For a bounded measurable potential $V = V(x,t)$, the factor in the observability constant arising from the Carleman estimate is best known to be $\exp(C\|V\|_{\infty}^{2/3})$ (even for time-independent potentials). In this paper, we show that, for Lipschtiz potentials, this factor can be replaced by $\exp(C(\|\nabla V\|_{\infty}^{1/2} +\|\partial_tV\|_{\infty}^{1/3} ))$, which improves the previous bound $\exp(C\|V\|_{\infty}^{2/3})$ in some typical scenarios. As a consequence, with such a Lipschitz potential, we obtain a quantitative regular control in a null controllability problem. In addition, for the one-dimensional heat equation with some time-independent bounded measurable potential $V = V(x)$, we obtain the optimal observability constant.

We derive local gradient estimates of the Li–Yau type for positive solutions of porous medium equations on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below. As applications, several parabolic Harnack inequalities are obtained. In particular, our results improve the ones of Lu, Ni, Vázquez, and Villani (in J. Math. Pures Appl. 91:1–19, 2009). Moreover, our results recover the ones of Davies (in Cambridge Tracts Math vol. 92, 1989), Hamilton (in Comm. Anal. Geom. 1:113–125, 1993) and Li and Xu (in Adv. Math. 226:4456–4491, 2011).

Abstract:In this paper, by maximum principle and cutoff function, we investigate gradient estimates for positive solutions to two nonlinear parabolic equations under Ricci flow. The related Harnack inequalities are deduced. An result about positive solutions on closed manifolds under Ricci flow is abtained. As applications, gradient estimates and Harnack inequalities for positive solutions to the heat equation under Ricci flow are derived. These results in the paper can be regard as generalizing the gradient estimates of Li-Yau, J. Y. Li, Hamilton and Li-Xu to the Ricci flow. Our results also improve the estimates of S. P. Liu and J. Sun to the nonlinear parabolic equation under Ricci flow.

Abstract:In this paper we prove some Hamilton type and Li-Yau type gradient estimates on positive solutions to generalized nonlinear parabolic equations on smooth metric measure space with compact boundary. The geometry of the space in terms of lower bounds on the weighted Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature tensor and weighted mean curvature of the boundary are key in proving generalized local and global gradient estimates. Various applications of these gradient estimates in terms of parabolic Harnack inequalities and Liouville type results are discussed. Further consequences to some specific models informed by the nature of the nonlinearities are highlighted.
