Abstract:We prove a compactness theorem for sequences of low-action punctured holomorphic curves of controlled topology, in any dimension, without imposing the typical assumption of uniformly bounded Hofer energy. In the limit, we extract a family of closed Reeb-invariant subsets. Then, we prove new structural results for the U-map in ECH and PFH, implying that such sequences exist in abundance in low-dimensional symplectic dynamics. We obtain applications to symplectic dynamics and the geometry of surfaces. First, we prove generalizations to higher genus surfaces and three-manifolds of the celebrated Le Calvez-Yoccoz theorem. Second, we show that for any closed Riemannian or Finsler surface a dense set of points have geodesics passing through them that visit different sections of the surface. Third, we prove a version of Ginzburg-Gürel's "crossing energy bound" for punctured holomorphic curves, of arbitrary topology, in symplectizations of any dimension.

Abstract:We show that in a spacetime geometry with general connection, there exist field redefinitions that replace the mixed-symmetry nonmetricity of the asymmetric connection with the sum of torsion and the field strength of special conformal transformations of a Lorentzian connection. In contrast to general relativity, generic action functionals give different results for metric versus Palatini-style variations. We consider some of the resulting issues in Poincarè gauge theory, where it is natural to vary both the solder form and the spin connection, and where the action may differ from the Einstein-Hilbert case. Independent variation may introduce nonmetricity as well as torsion. Appending the defining equation of nonmetricity to the Maurer-Cartan equations of the Poincarè Lie algebra, we show that the mixed symmetry components of nonmetricity can be absorbed into an altered torsion tensor, restoring local Lorentz symmetry and metric compatibility while including quadratic terms in the redefined curvature. In order to recover the original torsion and nonmetric fields, we replace the definition of nonmetricity by an additional structure equation. We show that the maximal Lie algebra compatible with the enlarged set is isomorphic to the conformal Lie algebra. Therefore, in a Lorentzian conformal geometry the sum of torsion and the field strength of special conformal transformations is given by the mixed symmetry nonmetricity of an equivalent asymmetric system.

Abstract:Harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces arise from a conformally invariant variational problem. Therefore, on one hand, they are intimately connected with moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, and on the other hand, because the conformal group is noncompact, constitute a prototype for the formation of singularities, the so-called bubbles, in geometric analysis. In theoretical physics, they arise from the nonlinear σ-model of quantum field theory. That model possesses a supersymmetric extension, coupling a harmonic map like field with a nonlinear spinor field. In the physical model, that spinor field is anticommuting. In this contribution, we analyze both a mathematical version with a commuting spinor field and the original supersymmetric version. Moreover, this model gives rise to a further field, a gravitino, that can be seen as the supersymmetric partner of a Riemann surface metric. Altogether, this leads to a beautiful combination of concepts from quantum field theory, structures from Riemannian geometry and Riemann surface theory, and methods of nonlinear geometric analysis.
On non-elliptic symplectic manifolds

Abstract:Let $M$ be a closed symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with non-ellipticity. We can define an almost Kähler structure on $M$ by using the given symplectic form. Hence, we have a $\G=\pi_1(M)$-invariant almost Kähler structure on the universal covering, $\ti M$, of $M$. Using Darboux coordinate charts, we globally deform the given almost Kähler structure on $\ti M$ off a Lebesgue measure zero subset to obtain a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on $\ti M$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to the given almost Kähler structure. Analogous to Teleman's $L^2$-Hodge decomposition on PL manifolds or Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, we give a $L^2$-Hodge decomposition theorem on $\ti M$ with respect to the Lipschitz Kähler flat metric. Using an argument of Gromov, we give a vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $p$-forms, $p\not=n$ (resp. a non-vanishing theorem for $L^2$ harmonic $n$-forms) on $\ti M$, then the signed Euler characteristic satisfies $(-1)^n\chi(M)\geq0$ (resp. $(-1)^n\chi(M)>0$). Similarly, for any closed even dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$, we can construct a $\G$-invariant Lipschitz Kähler flat structure on the universal covering, $(\ti M, \ti g)$, of $(M, g)$ which is $\G$-homotopy equivalent to and quasi-isometric to the metric $\ti g$. As an application, using Gromov's method we show that the Chern-Hopf conjecture holds true in closed even dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (resp. strictly negative curvature), it gives a positive answer to a Yau's problem due to S. S. Chern and H. Hopf.

Abstract:Given two tensor fields of type (1,1) on a smooth n-dimensional manifold M, such that all their Frölicher-Nijenhuis brackets vanish, the algebra of differential forms on M becomes a bi-differential graded algebra. As a consequence, there are partial differential equation (PDE) systems associated with it, which arise as the integrability condition of a system of linear equations and possess a binary Darboux transformation to generate exact solutions. We recover chiral models and potential forms of the self-dual Yang-Mills, as well as corresponding generalizations to higher than four dimensions, and obtain new integrable non-autonomous nonlinear matrix PDEs and corresponding systems.

Abstract:Bifurcations within holomorphic families of rational maps on the Riemann sphere are well understood since the works of Mañé-Sad-Sullivan and, independently, Lyubich in the eighties. Their techniques are however totally inoperant in a higher dimensional setting and one has therefore to adopt a different approach. For holomorphic families of endomorphisms on P this has been done in a joint work with Fabrizio Bianchi and Christophe Dupont. Our point of view on bifurcation phenomena combines ergodic and pluripotential-theoretic tools. In particular the Lyapunov exponents of the maximal entropy measure play an important role. Abstract:I unravel an elegant geometric meaning of the mass of the lowest energy excited state of a renormalizable quantized field theory by studying the weighted geometry of the classical configuration space of the theory. A suitably defined regularized Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature of these infinite dimensional spaces controls the spectra of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonians. The Ricci curvature part of the full Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature appears to be purely quantum in nature. This geometric contribution to the spectra in the context of quantum field theory has not been studied previously to my knowledge. Assuming the existence of rigorous quantization, I present a few problems starting from massive free particles to the non-abelian Yang-Mills theory. A remarkable property is observed in the large $N$ Yang-Mills theory, where a non-trivial mass gap is preserved. This occurs due to the fact that the regularized Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature that is responsible for the gap of the configuration space scales as $g^{2}_{YM}N=\lambda$ ('t Hooft coupling) that remains invariant.

Exactly Solvable and Integrable Systems

Abstract:Some years ago Ruijsenaars and Schneider initiated the study of mechanical systems exhibiting an action of the Poincare algebra. The systems they discovered were far richer: their models were actually integrable and possessed a natural quantum version. We follow this early work finding and classifying mechanical systems with such an action. New solutions are found together with a new class of models exhibiting an action of the Galilean algebra. These are related to the functional identities underlying the various Hirzebruch genera. The quantum mechanics is also discussed.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth Anosov Riemannian manifold and $\mathcal{C}^\sharp$ the set of its primitive closed geodesics. Given a Hermitian vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ equipped with a unitary connection $\nabla^{\mathcal{E}}$, we define $\mathcal{T}^\sharp(\mathcal{E}, \nabla^{\mathcal{E}})$ as the sequence of traces of holonomies of $\nabla^{\mathcal{E}}$ along elements of $\mathcal{C}^\sharp$. This descends to a homomorphism on the additive moduli space $\mathbb{A}$ of connections up to gauge $\mathcal{T}^\sharp: (\mathbb{A}, \oplus) \to \ell^\infty(\mathcal{C}^\sharp)$, which we call the $\textit{primitive trace map}$. It is the restriction of the well-known $\textit{Wilson loop}$ operator to primitive closed geodesics. The main theorem of this paper shows that the primitive trace map $\mathcal{T}^\sharp$ is locally injective near generic points of $\mathbb{A}$ when $\dim(M) \geq 3$. We obtain global results in some particular cases: flat bundles, direct sums of line bundles, and general bundles in negative curvature under a spectral assumption which is satisfied in particular for connections with small curvature. As a consequence of the main theorem, we also derive a spectral rigidity result for the connection Laplacian. The proofs are based on two new ingredients: a Livšic-type theorem in hyperbolic dynamical systems showing that the cohomology class of a unitary cocycle is determined by its trace along closed primitive orbits, and a theorem relating the local geometry of $\mathbb{A}$ with the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance near zero of a certain natural transport operator.

Abstract:The formation of a confining string (or a p-brane) in a Poincaré invariant theory breaks spontaneously this symmetry which is thereby realized non-linearly in the effective action of these extended objects. As a consequence the form of the action is strongly constrained. A new general method is described to obtain in a systematic way higher order Lorentz invariant contributions to this action. We find a simple recipe to promote a term invariant under the stability subgroup to an expression invariant under the whole Lorentz group. It is based on the following three steps: in the saturation of worldsheet (or worldvolume) indices replace the Minkowski metric with the inverse of the induced metric; in the saturation of indices of the transverse coordinates describing the position of the extended object replace the Euclidean metric with a certain new metric; finally replace the field derivatives of order higher than two with a certain covariant derivative. Lorentz invariance of the expression modified this way immediately follows. We find in particular that the leading bulk deviation of the Nambu Goto action in any space-time dimensions is proportional to the square of scalar curvature.

Abstract:Abstract Motivated by the thermodynamics of black hole solutions conformal to stationary solutions, we study the geometric invariant theory of null hypersurfaces. It is well-known that a null hypersurface in a Lorentzian manifold can be treated as a Carrollian geometry. Additional structure can be added to this geometry by choosing a connection which yields a Carrollian manifold. In the literature various authors have introduced Koszul connections to study the study the physics on these hypersurfaces. In this paper we examine the various Carrollian geometries and their relationship to null hypersurface embeddings. We specify the geometric data required to construct a rigid Carrollian geometry, and we argue that a connection with torsion is the most natural object to study Carrollian manifolds. We then use this connection to develop a hypersurface calculus suitable for a study of intrinsic and extrinsic differential invariants on embedded null hypersurfaces; motivating examples are given, including geometric invariants preserved under conformal transformations.

Abstract:Shape Dynamics is a theory of gravity that waives refoliation invariance in favor of spatial Weyl invariance. It is a canonical theory, constructed from a Hamiltonian, 3+1 perspective. One of the main deficits of Shape Dynamics is that its Hamiltonian is only implicitly constructed as a functional of the phase space variables. In this paper, I write down the equations of motion for Shape Dynamics to show that over a curve in phase space representing a Minkowski spacetime, Shape Dynamics possesses Poincaré symmetry for appropriate boundary conditions. The proper treatment of such boundary conditions leads us to completely formulate Shape Dynamics for open manifolds in the asymptotically flat case. We study the charges arising in this case and find a new definition of total energy, which is completely invariant under spatial Weyl transformations close to the boundary. We then use the equations of motion once again to find a non-trivial solution of Shape Dynamics, consisting of a flat static Universe with a point-like mass at the center. We calculate its energy through the new formula and rederive the usual Schwarzschild mass.

Abstract:We use techniques from functorial quantum field theory to provide a geometric description of the parity anomaly in fermionic systems coupled to background gauge and gravitational fields on odd-dimensional spacetimes. We give an explicit construction of a geometric cobordism bicategory which incorporates general background fields in a stack, and together with the theory of symmetric monoidal bicategories we use it to provide the concrete forms of invertible extended quantum field theories which capture anomalies in both the path integral and Hamiltonian frameworks. Specialising this situation by using the extension of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem to manifolds with corners due to Loya and Melrose, we obtain a new Hamiltonian perspective on the parity anomaly. We compute explicitly the 2-cocycle of the projective representation of the gauge symmetry on the quantum state space, which is defined in a parity-symmetric way by suitably augmenting the standard chiral fermionic Fock spaces with Lagrangian subspaces of zero modes of the Dirac Hamiltonian that naturally appear in the index theorem. We describe the significance of our constructions for the bulk-boundary correspondence in a large class of time-reversal invariant gauge-gravity symmetry-protected topological phases of quantum matter with gapless charged boundary fermions, including the standard topological insulator in 3+1 dimensions.

Abstract:We revise the use of 8-dimensional conformal, complex (Cartan) domains as a base for the construction of conformally invariant quantum (field) theory, either as phase or configuration spaces. We follow a gauge-invariant Lagrangian approach (of nonlinear sigma-model type) and use a generalized Dirac method for the quantization of constrained systems, which resembles in some aspects the standard approach to quantizing coadjoint orbits of a group G. Physical wave functions, Haar measures, orthonormal basis and reproducing (Bergman) kernels are explicitly calculated in and holomorphic picture in these Cartan domains for both scalar and spinning quantum particles. Similarities and differences with other results in the literature are also discussed and an extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem is commented in connection with closure relations. An adaptation of the Born's Reciprocity Principle (BRP) to the conformal relativity, the replacement of space-time by the 8-dimensional conformal domain at short distances and the existence of a maximal acceleration are also put forward.

Abstract:Motivated by the quest to understand the analog of non-geometric flux compactification in the context of M-theory, we study higher dimensional analogs of generalized Poisson sigma models and corresponding dual string and p-brane models. We find that higher generalizations of the algebraic structures due to Dorfman, Roytenberg and Courant play an important role and establish their relation to Nambu-Poisson structures.

Abstract:We consider a class of non-linear PDE systems, whose equations possess Noether identities (the equations are redundant), including non-variational systems (not coming from Lagrangian field theories), where Noether identities and infinitesimal gauge transformations need not be in bijection. We also include theories with higher stage Noether identities, known as higher gauge theories (if they are variational). Some of these systems are known to exhibit linearization instabilities: there exist exact background solutions about which a linearized solution is extendable to a family of exact solutions only if some non-linear obstruction functionals vanish. We give a general, geometric classification of a class of these linearization obstructions, which includes as special cases all known ones for relativistic field theories (vacuum Einstein, Yang-Mills, classical N=1 supergravity, etc.). Our classification shows that obstructions arise due to the simultaneous presence of rigid cosymmetries (generalized Killing condition) and non-trivial de Rham cohomology classes (spacetime topology). The classification relies on a careful analysis of the cohomologies of the on-shell Noether complex (consistent deformations), adjoint Noether complex (rigid cosymmetries) and variational bicomplex (conserved currents). An intermediate result also gives a criterion for identifying non-linearities that do not lead to linearization instabilities.

Holography of Higher Codimension Submanifolds: Riemannian and Conformal

Abstract:We provide a natural generalization to submanifolds of the holographic method used to extract higher-order local invariants of both Riemannian and conformal embeddings, some of which depend on a choice of parallelization of the normal bundle. Qualitatively new behavior is observed in the higher-codimension case, giving rise to new invariants that obstruct the order-by-order construction of unit defining maps. In the conformal setting, a novel invariant (that vanishes in codimension 1) is realized as the leading transverse-order term appearing in a holographically-constructed Willmore invariant. Using these same tools, we also investigate the formal solutions to extension problems off of an embedded submanifold.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:A generalized Hitchin equation was proposed as the BPS equation for a large class of four dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 theories engineered using M5 branes. In this paper, we show how to write down the spectral curve for the moduli space of generalized Hitchin equations, and extract interesting $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 dynamics out of it, such as deformed modui space, chiral ring relation, SUSY breaking, etc. Holomorphy plays a crucial role in our construction.
A story of non-conformal branes: spindles, disks, circles and black holes

Abstract:We consider the $(p+2)$-dimensional gauged supergravities arising as a consistent truncation of type II on $S^{8-p}$, which are associated with the near-horizon limit of D$p$-branes, for $p=2,4,5,6$ (and NS5-branes for $p=5$). In a truncation of these theories with only abelian gauge fields and scalars, we find several classes of new solutions, with and without supersymmetry. Our ansatz for such backgrounds is inspired by the recent progress in the study of branes wrapped on orbifolds, but unlike those examples we consider "non-conformal branes", $i.e.$ no Anti de Sitter factors in the metric. Focusing on cases with non-trivial gauge fields, we can divide the solutions that we present in three categories: 1) branes wrapping Riemann surfaces, spindles and disks, 2) branes wrapped on a circle with a holonomy for the gauge field along the circle and 3) electrically charged black holes in gauged supergravity, which uplift to rotating branes in ten dimensions. We carefully analyze the conditions for supersymmetry in all these cases.
