Abstract:We formulate cosmological perturbation theory around the spatially curved FLRW background in the context of metric-affine gauge theory of gravity which includes torsion and nonmetricity. Performing scalar-vector-tensor decomposition of the spatial perturbations, we find that the theory displays a rich perturbation spectrum with helicities 0, 1, 2 and 3, on top of the usual scalar, vector and tensor metric perturbations arising from Riemannian geometry. Accordingly, the theory provides a diverse phenomenology, e.g. the helicity-2 modes of the torsion and/or nonmetricity tensors source helicity-2 metric tensor perturbation at the linear level leading to the production of gravitational waves. As an immediate application, we study linear perturbation of the nonmetricity helicity-3 modes for a general parity-preserving action of metric-affine gravity which includes quadratic terms in curvature, torsion, and nonmetricity. We then find the conditions to avoid possible instabilities in the helicity-3 modes of the spin-3 field.

Evolution of matter density perturbations in f(R) theories of gravity with non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry

Abstract:In the context of f(R) theories of gravity with non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry, we study the evolution of scalar cosmological perturbations in the metric formalism. We not only derive the perturbation equations in the longitudinal gauge, but also obtain the equation of matter density perturbations by using both the perturbed covariant conservation equations which are subject to taking the Lagrangian density of matter as opposite to the energy density of a perfect fluid, and the subhorizon approximation. Furthermore, in order to investigate the behavior of matter density perturbations, we apply the obtained perturbation equation to a class of models. In these models, it is shown that 1) the stronger the non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry is, the more the growth of matter density perturbations slows down; 2) the small scale perturbations grows faster than the large ones; and 3) the more the deviation of parameter n or λ from zero gets, the more evident the scale dependence of the growth of matter density perturbations becomes.

Abstract:We study cosmological perturbation theory within the framework of unimodular gravity. We show that the Lagrangian constraint on the determinant of the metric required by unimodular gravity leads to an extra constraint on the gauge freedom of the metric perturbations. Although the main equation of motion for the gravitational potential remains the same, the shift variable, which is gauge artifact in General Relativity, cannot be set to zero in unimodular gravity. This non-vanishing shift variable affects the propagation of photons throughout the cosmological evolution and therefore modifies the Sachs-Wolfe relation between the relativistic gravitational potential and the microwave temperature anisotropies. However, for adiabatic fluctuations the difference between the result in General Relativity and unimodular gravity is suppressed on large angular scales. Thus, no strong constraints on the theory can be derived.

Abstract:Within the extension of the $\Lambda$CDM model, allowing for the presence of neutrinos or warm dark matter, we develop the analytical cosmological perturbation theory. It covers all spatial scales where the weak gravitational field regime represents a valid approximation. Discrete particles - the sources of the inhomogeneous gravitational field - may be relativistic. Similarly to the previously investigated case of nonrelativistic matter, the Yukawa interaction range is naturally incorporated into the first-order scalar metric corrections.

Slow rotation black hole perturbation theory

Abstract:In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of first-order perturbations of the Kerr metric in the slow-rotation limit. We perform the calculation by perturbing the Schwarzschild metric plus up to second-order corrections in the spin in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The apparent coupling between different angular momentum axial-led and polar-led modes can be removed by suitably combining the perturbation equations and projecting them onto spin-weighted spherical harmonics. In this way, we derive the corrections to the Regge-Wheeler and the Zerilli equations up to second-order in the spin. We show that the two potentials remain isospectral as in the non-rotating limit. However, it is easy to demonstrate it only for a precise choice of the tortoise coordinate. The isospectrality with slow-rotating Teukolsky equation is also verified. We discuss the main implication of this result for the problem of vacuum metric reconstruction, providing the transformation rule between slow-spinning Teukolsky variables and metric perturbations. The existence of this relation leaves us with the conjecture that a resummation of the expansion in the spin is possible, leading to two decoupled differential equations for perturbations of the Kerr metric.

Abstract:We study linear cosmological perturbations in the most general teleparallel gravity setting, where gravity is mediated by the torsion and nonmetricity of a flat connection alongside the metric. For a general linear perturbation of this geometry around a homogeneous and isotropic background geometry, we derive the irreducible decomposition of the perturbation variables, as well as their behavior under gauge transformations, i.e., infinitesimal diffeomorphisms generated by a vector field. In addition, we also study these properties for the most general set of matter variables and gravitational field equations. We then make use of these result to construct gauge-invariant perturbation variables, using a general approach based on gauge conditions. We further calculate these quantities also in the metric and symmetric teleparallel geometries, where nonmetricity or torsion is imposed to vanish. To illustrate our results, we derive the energy-momentum-hypermomentum conservation equations for both the cosmological background and the linear perturbations. As another example, we study the propagation of tensor perturbations in the $f(G)$, $f(T)$ and $f(Q)$ class of theories.

Abstract:We derive the dynamics of (isotropic) scalar perturbations from the mean-field hydrodynamics of full Lorentzian quantum gravity, as described by a two-sector (timelike and spacelike) Barrett-Crane group field theory (GFT) model. The rich causal structure of this model allows us to consistently implement in the quantum theory the causal properties of a physical Lorentzian reference frame composed of four minimally coupled, massless, and free scalar fields. Using this frame, we are able to effectively construct relational observables that are used to recover macroscopic cosmological quantities. In particular, small isotropic scalar inhomogeneities emerge as a result of (relational) nearest-neighbor two-body entanglement between degrees of freedom of the underlying quantum gravity theory. The dynamical equations we obtain for geometric and matter perturbations show agreement with those of classical general relativity in the long-wavelength, super-horizon limit. In general, deviations become important for sub-horizon modes, which seem to be naturally associated with a trans-Planckian regime in our physical reference frame. We argue that these trans-Planckian corrections are quantum gravitational in nature. However, we explicitly show that for some physically interesting solutions these quantum gravity effects can be quite small, leading to a very good agreement with the classical GR behavior.

Abstract:We study the cosmological consequences of a recently proposed nonlocal modification of general relativity, obtained by adding a term m2R □−2R to the Einstein-Hilbert action. The model has the same number of parameters as ΛCDM, with m replacing ΩΛ. At the background level, after fixing m so to reproduce the observed value of ΩM, we get a pure prediction for the equation of state of dark energy as a function of redshift, wDE(z), with wDE(0) in the range [−1.165,−1.135] as ΩM varies over the broad range ΩM∊[0.20,0.36]. We find that the cosmological perturbations are well-behaved, and the model fully fixes the dark energy perturbations as a function of redshift z and wavenumber k. The nonlocal model provides a good fit to supernova data and predicts deviations from General Relativity in structure formation and in weak lensing at the level of 3-4%, therefore consistent with existing data but readily detectable by future surveys. For the logarithmic growth factor we obtain γ ≃ 0.53, to be compared with γ ≃ 0.55 in ΛCDM. For the Newtonian potential on subhorizon scales our results are well fitted by Ψ(a;k) = [1+μsas]ΨGR(a;k) with a scale-independent μs ≃ 0.09 and s ≃ 2, while the anisotropic stress is negligibly small.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of the 2nd order scalar, vector and tensor metric perturbations in the Einstein-de Sitter Universe in synchronous coordinates. For the scalar-scalar coupling between 1st order perturbations, we decompose the 2nd order perturbed Einstein equation into the respective field equations of 2nd order scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations, and obtain their solutions with general initial conditions. In particular, the decaying modes of solution are included, the 2nd order vector is generated even the 1st order vector is absent, and the solution of 2nd order tensor corrects that in literature. We perform general synchronous-to-synchronous gauge transformations up to 2nd order generated by a 1st order vector field $\xi^{(1)\mu}$ and a 2nd order $\xi^{(2)\mu}$. All the residual gauge modes of 2nd order metric perturbations and density contrast are found, and their number is substantially reduced when the transformed 3-velocity of dust is set be zero. Moreover, we show that only $\xi^{(2)\mu}$ is effective in carrying out 2nd order transformations that we consider, because $\xi^{(1)\mu}$ has been used in obtaining the 1st order perturbations. Holding the 1st order perturbations fixed, the transformations by $\xi^{(2)\mu}$ on the 2nd order perturbations have the same structure as those by $\xi^{(1)\mu}$ on the 1st order perturbations.
Gauge invariant perturbations of static spatially compact LRS II spacetimes

Abstract:We present a framework to describe completely general first-order perturbations of static, spatially compact, and locally rotationally symmetric class II spacetimes within the theory of general relativity. The perturbation variables are by construction covariant and identification gauge invariant and encompass the geometry and the thermodynamics of the fluid sources. The new equations are then applied to the study of isotropic, adiabatic perturbations. We discuss how the choice of frame in which perturbations are described can significantly simplify the mathematical analysis of the problem and show that it is possible to change frames directly from the linear level equations. We find explicitly that the case of isotropic, adiabatic perturbations can be reduced to a singular Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem, and lower bounds for the values of the eigenfrequencies can be derived. These results lay the theoretical groundwork to analytically describe linear, isotropic, and adiabatic perturbations of static, spherically symmetric spacetimes.

Abstract:We investigate the cosmological perturbations in generalized gravity, where the Ricci scalar and a scalar field are nonminimally coupled via an arbitrary function f(phi,R). In the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background, by studying the linear perturbation theory, we separate the scalar-type perturbations into the curvature perturbation and the entropy perturbation, whose evolution equations are derived. Then we apply this framework to inflation. We consider the generalized slow-roll conditions and the quantization initial condition. Under these conditions, two special examples are studied analytically. One example is the case with no entropy perturbation. The other example is a model with the entropy perturbation large initially but decaying significantly after crossing the horizon.
Gauge fixing in cosmological perturbations of Unimodular Gravity

Abstract:With focus on the cosmological evolution of linear perturbations of matter and geometry, we calculate the equivalent expressions to that of the Newtonian and Synchronous gauges within the framework of Unimodular Gravity, being these two gauges commonly used and implemented in Boltzmann codes. An important aspect of our analysis is the inclusion of the energy-momentum current violation, as well as its perturbations. Moreover, for the first time we demonstrate that it is possible to fix both gauges consistently, although as it has been already noticed in previous literature, neither of them is recovered in the sense of the dynamics given in General Relativity for matter and metric fluctuations. Specifically, we show that since the unimodular constraint at the level of linear perturbations lead to only one degree of freedom of scalar modes of metric fluctuations, the dynamics in Unimodular Gravity forces to keep the anisotropic stress in the Newtonian gauge, whereas the cold dark matter comoving frame can not be set in the Synchronous gauge. The physical implications on the density contrast of cold dark matter is reviewed, and the Sachs-Wolfe effect is obtained and compared with previous results in the literature of cosmological perturbations in Unimodular Gravity.

Abstract:The current status of the recent developments of the second-order gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory is reviewed. To show the essence of this perturbation theory, we concentrate only on the universe filled with a single scalar field. Through this paper, we point out the problems which should be clarified for the further theoretical sophistication of this perturbation theory. We also expect that this theoretical sophistication will be also useful to discuss the theoretical predictions of non-Gaussianity in CMB and comparison with observations.

Abstract:We present a general formalism for the Hamiltonian description of perturbation theory around any spatially homogeneous spacetime. We employ and refine the Dirac method for constrained systems, which is very well-suited to cosmological perturbations. This approach includes a discussion of the gauge-invariant dynamics of perturbations as well as an analysis of gauge transformations, gauge-fixing, partial gauge-fixing and spacetime reconstruction. We will introduce the Kuchař parametrization of the kinematical phase space as a convenient tool for studying the gauge transformations. The key element of this approach is the reconstruction of spacetime based on gauge-fixing conditions.

Abstract:High-accuracy gravitational-wave modeling demands going beyond linear, first-order perturbation theory. Particularly motivated by the need for second-order perturbative models of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals and black hole ringdowns, we present practical spherical-harmonic decompositions of the Einstein equation, Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli equations, and Teukolsky equation at second perturbative order in a Schwarzschild background. Our formulations are covariant on the $t$--$r$ plane and on the two-sphere, and we express the field equations in terms of gauge-invariant metric perturbations. In a companion Mathematica package, PerturbationEquations, we provide these invariant formulas as well as the analogous formulas in terms of raw, gauge-dependent metric perturbations. Our decomposition of the second-order Einstein equation, when specialized to the Lorenz gauge, was a key ingredient in recent second-order self-force calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 021101 (2020); ibid. 127, 151102 (2021); ibid. 130, 241402 (2023)].

Abstract:We study the second-order perturbations in the Einstein-de Sitter Universe in synchronous coordinates. One loop to rule them all: Perturbativity in the presence of ultra slow-roll dynamics

Abstract:We discuss the issue of perturbativity in single-field inflationary models with a phase of ultra slow-roll (USR) tailor suited to generate an order-one abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). More in detail, we impose the condition that loop corrections made up of short-wavelength modes enhanced by the USR dynamics do not alter the tree-level power spectrum of curvature perturbations. In our analysis, the USR phase is preceded and followed by two stages of ordinary slow-roll (SR), and we model the resulting SR/USR/SR dynamics using both instantaneous and smooth transitions. Focusing on scales relevant for CMB observations, we find that it is not possible, with these arguments, to rule out the scenario of PBH formation via USR, not even in the limit of instantaneous transition. However, we also find that loop corrections of short modes on the power spectrum of long modes, even though not large enough to violate perturbativity requirements, remain appreciable and, most importantly, are not tamed in realistic realisations of smooth SR/USR/SR transitions. This makes perturbativity a powerful theoretical tool to constrain USR dynamics. We extend the analysis at any scale beyond those relevant for CMB observations. We find that loop corrections of short modes remain within the few percent if compared to the tree-level power spectrum. However, we also find one notable exception of phenomenological relevance: we show that the so-called dip in the power spectrum of curvature perturbation is an artifact of the tree-level computation.

Abstract:We analyze inhomogeneous cosmological models in the local Universe, described by the Lemaître–Tolman–Bondi (LTB) metric and developed using linear perturbation theory on a homogeneous and isotropic Universe background. Focusing on the different evolution of spherical symmetric inhomogeneities, we compare the LTB model, in which the cosmological constant is included in the LTB formalism, with inhomogeneous cosmological models based on modified gravity theories viewed in the Jordan frame. We solve the system of field equations for both inhomogeneous cosmological models adopting the method of separation of variables: we integrate analytically the radial profiles of local perturbations, while their time evolution requires a numerical approach. The main result of the analysis concerns the different radial profiles of local inhomogeneities due to the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field in the Jordan frame of gravity. While radial perturbations follow a power-law in the LTB model, Yukawa-like contributions appear in the theory. Interestingly, this latter peculiar behavior of radial profile is not affected by the choice of the functional form. The numerical solution of time-dependent perturbations exhibits a non-diverging profile. This work suggests that investigations about local inhomogeneities in the late Universe may allow us to discriminate if the present cosmic acceleration is caused by a cosmological constant term or a modified gravity effect.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the cosmological perturbation formalism for theories within the framework of affine gravity. These theories are distinguished by their connection, devoid of any metric. Our approach involves segregating perturbations into symmetric and antisymmetric components (related to torsion), each further decomposed into irreducible elements, namely scalars, pseudoscalars, vectors, pseudovectors, 2-tensors, and 3-tensors. Finally, we have fully addressed the gauge freedom in this context.
